Heard a credible rumor this weekend that Beck is a card-carrying Scientologist. Truth or fiction?......and do we care?

"The weirdest rumor everybody else has heard about Beck is that he’s a Scientologist. Nearly every source contacted for this story confessed to having heard that rumor, then added that they’d never seen concrete evidence that there was any truth to it. For the record: Beck is not a Scientologist. His biological father, David Campbell, has been deeply committed to the Church of Scientology for several decades; however, Beck’s parents divorced when he was young, and he was largely brought up by his mother, who’s been with artist Sean Carrillo since 1984."

Personally, I wouldn't care if he became a LaVeyist, as long as he stopped trying to be Prince and recorded another decent album.

I'd rather he wasn't though it's none of my beeswax. I figured him to be a Buddhist. He does thank Bodhi and Jenna on his new cd. Bodhi and Jenna Elfman. She was 'Dharma' on that show "Dharma and Walrus"...I mean 'Greg' both big scientologists. Big meaning powerful. not tall. I hate religious people. I'm serious about this. It bugs me when musicians (or anyone I'm supposed to be interested in) are religious. It also bugs me when scientology (which is dopey) is used as an example of a duff religion by people who do not automatically acribe duffness to christianity, buddhism, islam, judaism, etc. These things are all dopey. I genuinely hate religious people. I look forward to the day when, in the News of the World maybe, it's considered scandalous that someone who believes (or claims to believe) in magic men in the sky and borrowed nonsensical myths from thousands of years ago is allowed to rule the country.

Well, I was drunk when I wrote that (and I'm drunk now). It's a kind of adolescent statement, I agree, and a lie: I don't actively go about hating religious people (my mum has a crucifix on her bedroom wall, which is the sexiest thing about her). Religious people r00l. I'd be religious too if I could. Most religions have kewl values (brotherhood, sacrifice, goodwill- yeah homey, I can roll with that), and the magic men in the sky and borrowed nonsensical myths from thousands of years ago are just there to make the whole thing more interesting aesthetically. Trouble with religion is the "if you disagree, you are EVIL" attitude that so frequently acompanies it.

Well, Beck's viewpoints frequently find their way into his lyrics ("turn shit to gold" is the most prominent example), so yeah they might, but it would just go over everyone's heads (or alternately he could become more "direct", like Dylan did, altho of course Dylan's direct phase was already long established by the time Jesus came by to say hi.)

At any rate, religion in music = classic. Gospel music in general, Son House, Stevie Wonder, Prefab Sprout's "Troubled Man", Elvis' Gospel recordings, The Staples Singers, Marvin Gaye, "Crying In The Chapel", etc etc etc

The problems with all the rumors is, people see Scientology in his work when it's not there. I've heard people hypothesize that "Sea Change" songs are Co$-inspired because they're gloomy. Somebody else told me that she thought "Sea Change" was a reference to Scientology's Sea Org.

I haven't seen any Scientology refs in his music yet. I do hear gospel call-and-response in the strings on "Paper Tiger," however.

They were from late 1968 onwards which means they already were Scient0l0gists by Woodstock. Through them, both Joe Boyd and Sandy Denny also dabbled in Scient0l0gy. Supposedly Mike Heron was out of it altogether by the late 80s, Robin Williamson was still dedicating records to LRH in the 90s, don't know if he's still involved or not.

On December 5, 1995, I was dead on arrival at a hospital 45 minutes north of Clearwater, Florida. My caretakers had passed another hospital, while I lay in the car dead or dying, because the doctor on staff at the second one was a Scientologist.

1990 (last name unknown), Bob suicide Bob was a real estate agent who lived around the Utica, Michigan area. He committed suicide in 1990 while receiving Scientology services.

Chaki, or anyone else, when you post these anti-Scientology sites, could you find the ones that aren't completely shrill or more obtuse than a Hubbard novel? One could say that the Opus Dei is just as evil as Scientology, but I don't see any threads that are getting up in arms about Frank Sinatra being a Catholic.

(I would also prefer no frames and no animated gifs in these sites.)

Well, that, or maybe his record label doesn't want them released for legal/contract reasons?

I mean, if Beck was able to personally force DGC to allow KXLU (mind you, a station on a Catholic campus) to use a track of his on their benefit CD, I don't see why Beck would refuse to have a Beck/Calvin collab CD released, other than for personal reasons and/or label reasons. Religious reasons? I don't think so.

Not gonna read this whole thread, but I had no idea this was merely considered a "rumor"; didn't they report it flat out in that Sunday Times magazine feature a couple weeks ago? I kinda assumed it was just common knowledge. (In the Times piece, Beck opted not to *talk* about Scientology, but there seemed no question that he observed it, or practiced it, or believed it, or whatever it is Scientologists do.)

I don't think one's religion can be separated from one's personal ethics/lifestyle. By most accounts, Beck has apparently become an egotistical primadonna, and that's consistent with the values that scientology teaches. Of course, One Foot In The Grave was recorded before his "big break" with Loser...so maybe it's just fame that caused him to be a dick, not scientology.
