Why don't Super Furry Animals Rule the World?

After seeing them in Austin last Saturday this question may not actually be rhetorical. There is no band alive right now that is better, in my opinion, and, to paraphrase Steve Earle, I will stand on Radiohead's (or take your pick) coffee table and tell them to their face. They have been around for a number of years and why they don't get substantially more attention, even compared to fellow Welsh bands is beyond me. Anybody that would prefer the Manic Street Preachers needs to be drawn and quartered. Seriously. Ok, not quite seriously, but you catch my not-so-subtle drift. Any other Furry acolytes? Am I like modern Steeleye Span fan?

Brent, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I adore them as well. Can I wager a guess that it's the same reason more people don't appreciate The Divine Comedy? I think that both make beautiful songs, but they're songs that reward you more for sitting down & paying attention to them while you're listening, instead of using them as background noise. And neither band really sounds like any kind of mainstream music, which probably works against them a lot. Actually, I might just seeing the connection between these two bands because I'm listening to Presidential Suite right now & it's got horns in it.

My opinion on this is probably influenced by a big argument I just had with my roommate over whether the music that plays on mainstream radio stations is boring and "safe" sounding (me= hell, yes, i never want to hear staind again in my life), and why that is. SFA songs don't sound like everything else that you've heard on the radio on your drive home- they're certainly not flat & predictable. It always seems like the bands which gain the largest popular followings these days (ie, the last 3 or 4 years) are the ones which do nothing new at all. I'd love to be disproved on this point with some good (non-Radiohead's Kid A) examples here.

Oh, and I'll guess that you're from the UK if you're bringing up the Manic Street Preachers as an example. So I don't think that this is as big of a problem in the UK, but here (US) no one has ever heard of them- that's sort of a minor obstacle on your way to Ruling the World.

lyra in seattle, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't prefer the Manic Street Preachers. I think SFA and MSP are equally boring.

paul, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't we just have a Furries thread? I like 'em and Steve Earle. No Manics, no thanks. SFA don't have the best shelf life, and they're pretty average in thee hit 'r miss category. But they receive many sooper bonus points for energy and creativity and fun, fun. fun.

bnw, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't we just have a Furries thread?

Yus. Love the archives and 'find in page' searches, Brent, and they will love you. :-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and I'll guess that you're from the UK

Not unless Austin is in the UK now. ;-)

So I'm not so entirely snarky, I will say that I'm seeing them tomorrow and very much look forward to it. Not standing on coffee tables quite yet, though.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

10cc vs Gentle Giant

dave q, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

10cc, please.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 7 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but why do you have to stand on their COFFEE TABLE? (that steve earle he's so NU-COUNTRY!?)

heh it made me think of that nice glass coffee table someone;'s always bought in thriller, entirely for the purpose of someone else getting shot and falling in slow motion backwards through it, filmed from underneath of course

i don't believe i've ever heard anything by gentle giant: their LP covers were fiercely oogly iirc

Revive!

Just got their Songbook greatest hits CD and it is AMAZING. GOOD FUCKING GOD could these guys write some great pop songs!!! We're talking Beatles territory here folks.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Hands down the most prolifically, consistently inventive and song-for-song GREAT band of the past 10 years.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

I agree, they are amazing. It's almost tiresome to read in so many different places how they are so vastly undrrated/unappreciated do they just have a rabid fanbase or are they as good as the supporters say. I fear i can not answer this because I may be a "rabid" fan but yes they rule!

jmeister (jmeister), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Best band of the last 10 years.

BeeOK (boo radley), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

Excellent band. I do understand why they don't have a mainstream audience, as in the kids dig them and they are riding high in the singles charts. But I still don't see why they don't get a similar attention in the albums market that, for instance, Radiohead or Strokes get.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

I find them to be incredibly average. Not good, not bad, just there.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I think they are more in Supertramp-with-knobs-on territory than Beatles territory.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm with you Dan, and usually the novelty of somebody singing in a foreign language makes me a little more forgiving.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

They're okay, a lot of good songs but I've never been drawn to them as much as perhaps the Boo Radleys, Gorky's and even the Beta Band.

Maybe their popularity got flushed out with Britpop but I think people put them up there with Space etc.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

*you know, one that did not consist of my friends.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

the Super Furries are the considerate, reliable, solid brunette who you think of as your best female friend whilst chasing gormlessly after a spectacular blonde bombshell, only to find out, in the end, that the brunette was the perfect girl for you all along.

Lee F# (fsharp), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Lee OTM

It took me ages to realise that I was a SFA fan, only after noticing that I owned all their albums.

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I've loved this band since the dying days of Britpop (summer of 96?). The first four albums are really great, in fact I still listen to the Welsh one all the time (one of those that's never been your favorite, but gets most of the play over time). I was hugely disappointed by the one after that, and it hasn't really been the same since, but they've been very good to me.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

(xpost) and all the DVD versions...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

The Furries are a treasure and one of the best bands out there now. If you dissagree I feel you should be shot.

Look forward to hearing the new album, Love Kraft, in August.

molly, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Great, great band. I'm glad they're sort of underappreciated- keeps their live shows more tolerable, crowd-wise.

cdwill, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I love them — but some people here are entering hyperbole territory. For one, the only record where they really let the A-list songwriting fly is RATW, which a lot of fans don't care for (though I do). Before then, however much you love their albums, there is not an unimpeachably undeniable track on them — not one. Same for the singles. For another, SFA are certifiably "wacky," which makes the only world that they would rule one populated by hairy weirdos. Still, I love them.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

what a mouthful of shite cliches naive teen idol. what the hell is an unimpeachably undeinable track?

unfortunate creativity is often viewed as wacky in today's sterile music environment.

dewi, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

I can't even imagine being interested enough in to purchase one of their album.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

"the Super Furries are the considerate, reliable, solid brunette.." - This is the most apt metaphor I believe I've ever heard.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Dan have you heard Some Things Come From Nothing?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

I think I've heard maybe three SFA songs? One of them was the one with the puppet video; my overall reaction was to lump them in with Kula Shaker.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

It does seem odd that the wave that took Travis, the Stereophonics, et al to mainstream popularity didn't catch the Furries too. Guerilla seems to have been their most popular album but I'm by no means sure it's their best. I did think that maybe they're too zany for most in comparison to the two aforementioned (and extremely dull) bands but then you think of the likes of the Scissor Sisters have been wildly successful so I'm not sure that's it. Is it that they maybe haven't pandered to a big label as much?

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

SFA fans as nuts as Tori fans it seems!

I don't really care for them but... I wish they had been more successful than Travis or Stereophonics!

Alright Furry Animals I Guess., Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

They were around long before either of those bands weren't they?

I remembered (or thought I did) them being one of the last Creation signings about half way through the brit-pop 'era' no?

Alright Furry Animals I Guess., Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

I've no idea if they're older than the other two but then I didn't become aware of them until they did hit the big time whereas SFA I knew about for a long time.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

SFAs first records on Creation came out in 1996. Before that, they had released some ultra-obscure techno records, and then a few more pop-oriented EPs on Ankst in 1994/5.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

to compare SFA to kula shaker means you've never actually listened to the band, which is a shame cause you're missing out a beautiful body of work. their music is 10X that of Travis or Stereophonics in terms of songwriting and talent. i rate them as modern day beach boys or the byrds.

Frankie, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I suspect Dan may be confusing SFA with Supergrass?

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

For another, SFA are certifiably "wacky," which makes the only world that they would rule one populated by hairy weirdos.

Or England during the summer and autumn of 1967. :-)

their music is 10X that of Travis or Stereophonics in terms of songwriting and talent.

Travis and SFA are both 10X that of Stereophonics in terms of songwriting and talent.

However, I have no problem understanding why Travis and Stereophonics are more popular. They are considerably less "wacky" than SFA - only Travis are also excellent songwriters!

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

travis are utterly boring, but likable! anyway super furry animals rule my world. has the new album leaked?

Mai, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

If they spent more time on their lyrics I think they'd be bigger. Even when they settle down for traditional pop territory (Hello, Sunshine getting on the OC comes to mind) it doesn't sound sincere enough to me. They're kind of like U2 with the ease in which they "craft" great rock songs, but the problem is that unlike U2 they aren't that famous internationally.

Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

I've never really heard anything by them exceptional enough to warrant the praise personally.

Solid, likeable, prolific, quirky, creative, touching but hardly heart-breaking.

It's like theres something quite ordinary, mediocre and vaguely unoriginal at their core that's can't help but drag them down to the level of 'alright', like a trillion others are 'alright'. Not surprised they're easily passed over by mainstream and 'serious' listeners at all.

Alright Furry Animals I Guess., Wednesday, 27 April 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

You clearly have not heard "Wherever I Lay My Phone (That's My Home)"

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone yet heard the Welsh Rare Beat compilation, co-compiled and sleeve-annotated by Gruff? Sounds fascinating through the Mojo review. One of the song titles (obv. translated back into English in the review) was one of the most wonderful I've ever seen.

Tom May (Tom May), Monday, 5 September 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

I've loved the Furries since Hometown Unicorn and I unabiding love for them kind of waned with Phantom Power but I have to say that in my opinion that Love Kraft is maybe their best! Buy It!

love the one sung by cian and slow life.

Huw Bunford sings the one you're thinking of Hub, Sex War & Robots. Check out the new album. I didn't rate it much at first but it's really grown on me and I'm loving it. Has there been any US press for the new album?

hub, Tuesday, 6 September 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

After feeling much love for LK I've started to give PP a few more listens. There are some crackers on there but I always end up skipping Bunf's song, strangely Back On A Roll is one of my favourites on the new album.

I think I went off the Furries a wee bit after seeing em at the CIA a year ago, they did an interminably long section in the middle of their set which featured all the slowies which totally kille the mood of the gig.

I'm also of the opinion they should start doing something a little bit different, I'm so bored of hearing TMDGAF at the end of every gig.

Saying that when I saw them at Ashton Court in Bristol back in July they were rather tip-top, Slow Life as an opener works really well.

Who sings what on LK? The sleevenotes don't reveal much...

Just wondering if anyone here has an MP3 of the Furries' Citizen's Band, that fantastic secret Guerilla track, that they can gmail to me?

I'd love to be able to stick it on a comp but have no way of doing it myself. I'm also after "Charge" the b-side off Ysbeidiau Heulog, I've got the 7" but again have no way of sticking it on a CD.

To listen to Citizen's Band, which is one of the best songs SFA have ever recorded, you need to put the Guerilla CD in your CD player, and then rewind back from track 1.

There's another secret track on the Outspaced compilation. It's an instrumental which I think is called Skinning Up For Jesus, it's not so essential but it's pretty cool nonetheless. All you need to do to hear it is the same thing to hear Citizen's Band.

Cunga, Thursday, 5 April 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

SFA fans need about as much "encouragement" as fans of Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx and Girls Aloud on ILM, they could do with a lot fucking less.

fandango, Thursday, 5 April 2007 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

Answering the original question:

- They don't "rock" enough for those who seek "rock"
- They aren't danceable enough for those who want to dance
- They aren't "Urban" enough for those who only listen to "Urban" music
- They "rock" too much for your average 50-year-old housewife.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 5 April 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

They don't "Lindy Hop" enough for those who seek "Lindy Hops"
They don't "Do the Mashed Potato" for those who seek to "Mashed Potato"

SEPARADO!
Soundtrack Festival

Release date: 19 November 2009
Running time: 84 mins
Director:
Starring: Gruff Rhys

This Premier of Separado! will be followed by a Q&A session with pop legend GRUFF RHYS (Super Furry Animals), Director Dyl 'Goch' Jones and Guardian journalist and author Will Hodgkinson.

Star Trek meets Buena Vista Social Club in this psychedelic western musical as Welsh pop legend GRUFF RHYS (Super Furry Animals) takes us on a pan continental road trip in search of his long lost Patagonian uncle, the poncho wearing guitarist RENE GRIFFITHS. In 1880, following a controversial horse race that led to an unresolved death, Gruff Rhys' family split as Dafydd Jones took his young family to join the burgeoning Welsh community in Patagonia, South America. There was to be no contact between the families for almost a century when in 1974 Rene Griffiths arrived in Wales with his Latin infused Welsh love songs and became an overnight sensation. Director Dyl 'Goch' Jones follows Gruff Rhys on a tour that takes in the theatres, nightclubs and desert teahouses of Wales, Brazil and the Argentine Andes as he discovers what became of his family, the Welsh Diaspora and its musical legacy. This Premier of Separado! will be followed by a Q&A session with Gruff Rhys, Director Dyl 'Goch' Jones and Guardian journalist and author Will Hodgkinson.
