Such a rhetorical question.

Amazing what sounds he got outta that thang... Nothing dud about him anywhere/anyhow.

Dave225, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

FUCKING CLASSIC...untouchable!!!!!!

, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Beyond classic--The Minutemen were working on a different (higher) level than pretty much anyone else at the time or since. They weren't interested in getting rich or being the coolest guys in town, just in making the best music they could. And they had the talent and the ideas and the work ethic to go from there. Not all of it comes through on the records, but a lot of it does. They get cited more than actually listened nowadays, which is a shame.

dan, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Classic. For being overweight, from the wrong town, the wrong circle, having dangerous politics, and playing harder and singing louder the more you didn't listen.

Dying young, with the flu in the back of a van, however, is very much a dud.

Colin Meeder, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Definitely one of those guys I would love to have seen still around these days, to see what he thought of it all. I figure he'd still have something to say, in music or out of it.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

fucking classic by all means. Thats my punk way of saying it.

Chris, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Custer died with shit in his pants!!"

Andy, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

beyond great...he got great sounds wothout even bothering with distortion. Like hendrix, I always wonder if he would've eventually disappointed me.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Classic Classic Classic - remember when bands could be influenced by Gang of Four and actually improve upon it, instead of just rehashing "Outside the Trains Don't Run On Time"?

J Blount, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

god's own minister of punk on earth, recalled way too early from his posting. delivered possibly the best opening line to a song ever ("let the products sell themselves, fuck advertising and commercial psychology, psychological methods that sell should be destroyed" - 'shit from an old notebook'), with so much venom, you'd think his life depended on it. hunt down 'double nickels on a dime' if you've never heard it. for me, it reinforces the idea that the best music is about ideas. killer guitarist, too.

angelo, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

So much LOVE here for a change!! Classic, of course, and fairly timeless, too.

Matt Riedl (veal), Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Not a big fan, but I DID see the Minutemen in '85.

Sean, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Absolute classic all the way, and sorely missed. Always had a good word to say to the fans.

briania, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Such an original in every possible way -- I cannot fathom how anyone could vote "dud" on this one. Minutemen were unique! Classic.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I love the D.Boon man!

Paul, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

This thread is kind of a waste - who wouldn't love D.Boon?

So let's change it to: "Ed Crawford - C/D"

I say classic. Even though Ed couldn't play guitar, he got Watt off his ass & formed a band. That's totally fucking classic - so despite his recent contributons, he'll always be classic for starting fIREHOSE.

Dave225, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

OK, I'll be the one to get eaten alive...I don't understand the Minutemen. I own Double Nickels on the Dime. I like most of the lyrics and the occasional punkier number in the middle of the album. I understand how they could be refreshing in their original context. But the rehashing of boring funk and jazz riffs does not appeal to me. Again, let me emphasize that I understand how in theory these elements could be appealing in contrast to other punk bands at the time, but in practice, it just comes off as annoying. The only people that I've actually met that like the Minutemen were all bass players, who seem to get off on the level of wankery that Mike Watt got away with (something that all bass players aspire to). Ok, flame on!

Nick A., Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

take the minutemen in the context of their time, they were very very original. also, mike watt shouldnt be held responsible for the wanky bass players who worship him now. also, george hurley is an amazing drummer -- one of the best. sad that fIREHOSE crashed and burned so badly with its major label records. J. Masic's production on the last one was some of the most horrendous i have ever heard.

jack cole, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

He played in such a contradictory style. Both sublimely fluid and angrily herky-jerky at the exact same time.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 2 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i've yet to hear anyone, fans of any school of music, pan the minutemen. one of the few (only ?) bands i know people to be so unanimous about.

mike (ro)bott, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like him heaps, except he likes bob fucking dylan. that sorts ruins it for me.

Andrew, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Likes? Is D. Boon actually hanging out with Elvis?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

amazing song writer--wrote the hooks: so new and different at the time: and amazing urgent lyrics, the shit

matt, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Got REALLY boring towards the end but the early stuff is very inspired and weird and he was certainly a one of a kind amazing guitar player. Poison Idea is better though.

Kris, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And much fatter.

Kris, Monday, 5 August 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

three years pass...
Oh my god, there can't be enough said about D Boon or the Minutemen in general. A lotta people either are ignorant to it or just don't wanna realize what punk was and is really about. People back then didn't know what to make of Minutemen and it's the same thing today too; but the influence and impact of the Minutemen is something that is permanent in the history of punk rock and revolutionary to underground independent music. Punk Rock was abour breaking boundries and doing-it-yourself. And by that criteria no one was more punk than the Minutemen. It wasn't supposed to be about a certain sound or image, but a lotta people make it out to be like that nowadays. All things change in time but the influence of the Minutemen will forever live on and D Boon will remain a legend by all means.

I think my disbelief at hearing he was dead (2 months after seeing the Minutemen play for the only time) runs second only to the Lennon killing

otm, Minutemen were gods at the time so D's death was a personal JFK-moment for me. I had missed them on that tour because I couldn't scrounge a ride for the show and, of course, assumed it was so big deal since they were constantly spieling.
