Summer's not technically over, but once school starts, everyone knows what time it is. So, what was the single of the summer?

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

'hot in herre.'
nothing else can touch it.

dk, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to say that it's not Nelly's fault that the radio is overplaying his song.

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

"Addictive" or "Full Moon".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

it's "hot in herre." it's pure evil.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hot in Herre. Heard it everywhere, all summer long. At one stage was hoping something better would come along, but you could do worse.

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

S Club Jrs - "Automatic High", genius + Frankie

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Does Lazy count as summer? it was everywhere at Glasto.

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

"Nothin" by Nore

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

"My Heart Won't Do" by Tim Deluxe, surely? That was more common than oxygen this summer.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

It Just Won't Do is the title Dom but I'll forgive you just this once. I was about to say that as a sort of objective view, as much as I love it it's not my favourite single of the summer.

Lazy counts all year round, and all next year aswell.

Bah non dance answer=It Just Won't Do, Lazy.

Dance answer-Layo and Bushwacka-Love Story (Tim Deluxe remix). Screw the haters.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah bah bloody LAZY - it WAS everywhere at Glasto and now each time I hear that meandering rub-fest it reminds me of rave on feel the vibe, and monster breakfasts and tents and fields and stalls a-a-and YOU BASTARDS!!!

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

"Round Round" of course ! Doh !

Darren, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"GRINDIN'" clipse. mmmmm.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

'Round Round', 'Just A Little' or 'Oops [Oh My]'

DavidM (DavidM), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

let the good times roll pt 2

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I now agree with Tracer on the NORE track.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

'sexiest man in jamaica' - mint royale
'weak become heroes' - the streets
(can't believe no-one's said that)
love story - l + b (tim deluxe mix)

" they could settle wars wit this if only they will..."

piscesboy, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus actually two glaring omissions on my part are pisces first two.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan i am ALWAYS RIGHT about these things. unless the track of the summer was actually "Roc the Mic" (but that might have been too early)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not normally one for this but... that Tim Deluxe song is fucking shit!

david h (david h), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

It always sounds to me like a yawed sample of Freak Like Me flirting with a gravity that only the melody can comprehend... grrr...

david h (david h), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

sexiest man in jamaica + weak become heroes =

piscesboy, you're the man

Mike (mratford), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

whoever said grindin by clipse is right. best neptunes song ever

boxcubed (boxcubed), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

"Close to Women" by Magic Cornflake

Burr, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

With Kik Off and All The Records On The Radio Are Shite just missing the bracket...

Toss-up twixt Sexiest Man, Soldier Girl, Envy (it IS great-and-I-do-not-care-what-any-one-else-says-so-knickers-to-the-lot-of-you) and Nightmares on Wax's Know My Name...

Go for the Spree, cos no-one else has yet, and I've just been listening to Marah, so I feel kinda trailblazing. Sort of.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

And it's not Dom's fault that he's got bootlegs on the brain to such an extent that he reckons Celine Dion vs. Tim Deluxe would be A Good Thing.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Without hesitation, VITALIC - PONEY Part 1.
But given a minute I would have suggested: The Shins - New Slang, Nore - Nothin or Luomo - Body Speaking

nick.K (nick.K), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

It came out late, but still: "Work It" by Missy Elliott pisses all over everything mentioned so far that I've heard.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

If that Vitalic EP was released this year then it's "La Rock" by a landslide (b-side or no). I also dig Ms. Jade's "Big Head" and if it's a "Get Ur Freak On" rehash then so fucking what? Oh yeah, I am going to go out on a limb and say that Andrew WK's "Party Hard" is in fact not absolute total crap but absolute total FUN. So yeah. Fritz is also spot-on with the RJD2 pick.

Hey, nobody's mentioned "Without Me" yet? What, honeymoon's over?

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh, I didn't even mention any of my Top 5 singles from this thread. So... yeah. "Make You Feel That Way". Blackalicious. Yep. And "Danger! High Voltage" for sure.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 4 September 2002 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nelly's "Hot In Herre" and Shakedown's "At Night".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 4 September 2002 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Rippin Kittin

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 5 September 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i've not heard a single song mentioned, my summer must have really sucked.

keith, Thursday, 5 September 2002 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"Record Shop" 21st Century Girls

(or new single, Round Round I guess)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 5 September 2002 00:40 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck all dat. house of jealous lovers all the way to the top.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Thursday, 5 September 2002 01:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I also like how "A Day in the Life" starts out as a pretty good John Lennon song and then turns into a corny Paul McCartney song and then back into a pretty good John Lennon and in between we get to hear some studio hacks rock out.

James Blount, Thursday, 5 September 2002 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Interesting summer you're having, there

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 5 September 2002 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Grindin' + Addictive = Nothin'. Challengers to the man with the band aid on his face: Luda's Move Bitch and the inescapable "Why'd ya hafta go and makes things so complicated?" Also that ragga sounding song all about smoking up I keep hearing on the radio. And that Trickdaddy song just because I like the "Trick loves the kids" part.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 5 September 2002 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I always skip "Move Bitch".

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 5 September 2002 04:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Big Tymers "Still Fly"

Todd Burns, Thursday, 5 September 2002 06:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Space Cowboy 'I Would Die 4 U'
Doves 'There Goes The Fear', 'Pounding'
FC Kahuna 'Machine Says Yes'
Flaming Lips 'Do You Realise'
Elvis vs JXL 'A Little Less Conversation'
Truth Hurts 'Addictive'
The Rapture 'House Of Jealous Lovers' (not very Summery but still everywhere)
any 'Without Me' bootleg (of which there are now 23,478)

blueski, Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm partial to "Oh Boy" m'self...

jimmythemod@hotmail.com, Thursday, 5 September 2002 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"Oh Boy" is probably one of my favorites too, but Nelly wins. "Hot in Herre" is just so ubiquitous, I've heard it everywhere I go this summer.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"House Of Jealous Lovers"; "Good Times (I Get High)"; "My Neck, My Back"; "Hot In Herre"; "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee", probably lots more.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

1)"hot in herre" - didn't like at first but the drip-drip effect plus the "unless you're gonna' do it" line swung it.
2)"just a little bit" - "sexy..." (but drop the two cockfarmers).

michael w., Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't believe no-one has mentioned that Ketchup Song thing. Played to death, impossible to avoid, mindnumbingly catchy, aaaarrrrghhhh!!!!!!!!

The Vitalic EP was from 2001, I heard it a lot last summer/winter, but not really that much this summer...

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"At Night" was released a long time ago also, though I suppose it and "Lazy" have been played all summer.

That Sexiest Man in Jamaica Tune is great fun.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

am i the only one who dislikes 'Hot In Herre' - mainly because i dont like Nelly i guess (heard it all before)...but even if this track had been by someone else i dont think i wouldve enjoyed it much...and its my least favourite production by the Neptunes this year even tho thats not a criticism of the track's production values...just a matter of personal taste i suppose

blueski, Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

it's not my *favourite* record of the summer, that would be something like "take me with u"-cosmos or "inspiration"-UR or "contemplation" (king britt remix)-josh one or something of the bola or boards of canada albums. but 'tune of the summer's' got to be ubiquitous, universal, "everywhere", which nelly was without managing to get on your tits too much. indeed, the record grew in stature as the weeks passed.

michael w., Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus I should have checked that thing I wrote to remember what I actually like, once again Cosmos and Josh One, two amazing tunes, Take Me With You has yet to see it's day in the sun, but it may very well do so, with a vocal remix around.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, by roachford !!!???

michael w., Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes I think that's who it was, you heard it?

I must say I quite like his nasal "so take me with youuuuu" whine.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

How hard must it be to find women that Nelly can stare down?

The Liberty X single is great, though, for showing that British pop just can't quite figure out how to talk about upward-sexing... "It's so exciting, the way you're inviting me..."

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 September 2002 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

not heard it, no. unable even to imagine it. strange anticipation: do i really want to hear it?

michael w., Thursday, 5 September 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

'Hot In Herre' for me too, just ahead of 'Without Me' and 'Perdonno'.

'The Ketchup Song' only popped onto my radar in last few days. Loving it now, will probably hate it by next week...

zebedee, Thursday, 5 September 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh...I tend to forget that lots of tunes take some time to make it to the UK, let alone the US. Has that Ingrid single "Tu m'as promis (tu es foutu)" reached your shores yet? Also a big (and annoying) summer hit...

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Missy. Missy. Missy.
November. November. November.
"Picture Lil Kim dating a pastor."

Matt C., Thursday, 5 September 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Blueski: no you're not.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 5 September 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

To me the "single of the summer" has jackshit with whether or not I like it.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 5 September 2002 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Scooter "The Logical Song"
Las Ketchup "The Ketchup Song"
some cheesy Dutch ravers v. the Patti Smith Group "Because The Night"

one of these, surely?

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 7 September 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

That "Because The Night" track is by Jan "DJ Jan Wayne" Christiansen, a German producer from the Kontor stable.

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Las Ketchup had the single of the WINTER DV, its winter here. Though Asereje is so good it might last till the summer

vic (vicc13), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh shit they are spanish, fuck they looked so argentinian

vic (vicc13), Saturday, 7 September 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

six years pass...

wow... best summer ever??

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 13 June 2009 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

it's barely started yet

casual racism fridays (bug), Saturday, 13 June 2009 22:03 (sixteen years ago)

i'm talkin about 2002!

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 14 June 2009 08:39 (sixteen years ago)

this was also the summer of the bushwacka billie jean remix, and of "the sound of violence" by cassius

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 14 June 2009 08:56 (sixteen years ago)

looking at the summer jams list for any given year will always make you think "best summer evahhhh!"

except maybe last year when we had 'american boy' in the spring and then nothing really huge in the summer except 'i kissed a girl' - still, i just turned to UK funky.

this year my personal summer jams are plentiful but there don't seem to be any massive crossover successes yet, and it's nearly july :/
