Taking Sides: Mis-Teeq vs Sugababes

I'd like to come up with a great DaveQ-esque theory but really I'm just interested in what you think. The two best pop groups in Britain (yeah yeah Graham to thread) - which one is supreme?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 9 September 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

duh, gotta be mis-teeq cos like they done the supremes on stars in their eyes get me out of here innit?

But seriously Lickin' On Both Sides (the Special Edition, natch) and Angels With Dirty Faces are the two best British pop albums of the year. Mis-Teeq I think have the edge when it comes to MCing. But both should be loved. Check out my rave review of AWDF on CoM to dispel any remaining doubts you may have had about buying the album (though I'm sure you already have).

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 9 September 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah that review made me start the thread: sound stuff. I got AWDF first day of release - Lickin' I was unaccountably late in picking up, in fact I think it was only after seeing their superb Glastonbury set (!). Mis-Teeq have found and settled on a style that works, but on the other hand Sugababes' stylistic restlessness keeps them interesting. Too close to call.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 9 September 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Mis-Teeq are changing though - I have the unaugmented version of "Lickin' On Both Sides" and the rapping is infrequent enough to be almost perfunctory (it's still a very good album, and at least better than "One Touch" - AWDF I've yet to hear). Whereas now with each version of each single that gets released Mis-Teeq they've upped the MC factor... ultimately I could imagine them making almost totally rap-based tracks with sung choruses.

(yeah so obv. I like Mis-Teeq more, but then I would. Both groups are great though, and Sugababes have a lot of fabulous moments to their name - "Soul Sound", "Freak Like Me" et. al)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 9 September 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Sugababes. What does Mis-teeq sound like?

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 9 September 2002 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

hmmm... Alesha vs Mutya? sorry, equally smitten

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 9 September 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Kris - Mis-Teeq are a UK-Garage/pop crossover, who've put out a string of good-to-great singles - All I Want, One Night Stand, Roll On, B With Me. "One Night Stand" is their biggest hit, the ska-tinged single version of "B With Me" probably their best.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 9 September 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant steelband-tinged, not ska-tinged.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 9 September 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks Tom. I like these garage/pop crossovers like the Streets and the So Solid Crew (not Craig David who seems like a total dork), though I'm not sure if the Sugababes count as garage. I wish these things (other than Craig David who seems like a total dork) would get played here. You guys don't have to listen to Moby on the radio, do you? Why did we get Craig David?

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 9 September 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Because Craig David is pretty cool?

vic (vicc13), Monday, 9 September 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Mis-Teeq.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 9 September 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Sugababes. More variety in their songs, Mis-teeq's are all pretty much variations on a theme - B With Me and All I Want practically have the same chorus - even though it is a good one.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 9 September 2002 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Duh, Sugababes. The 'babes have just released a whole* album fulla good songs, not just a coupla hits and some filler malarky for them gals. Sugababes even have a Mis-Teeq-esque ragga rap in't middle of one of their songs. So. Whoo needs Mis-Take?
Anyway, the two best groups of 2002 are Sugababes and Liberty X. I say again, duh!

(* except the Sting cover. Obvvv.)

DavidM (DavidM), Monday, 9 September 2002 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I only have the original non-remix motorbike version of Lickin On Both Sides (bought nearly a year ago - where were you?), but I probably still like it more than One Touch, in that I can sit through the whole thing without being annoyed by it. Sugababes probably have stronger songs though, but I still prefer Mis-Teeq, One Night Stand is even better than Round Round.

Graham (graham), Monday, 9 September 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Where's the filler on the Mis-Teeq album David?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 9 September 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Mis-Teeq have a *dirty secret* however, which is that their useless, almost non-singing third member is even more replacable than Heidi. She's got to go!

"These Days" excepted, there is no filler on Lickin' On Both Sides - some of my favourite tracks are the non-singles ("Stamp Reject", "They'll Never Know", "Secrets Of The Night", "You're Gonna Stay" - oh my *god* it's a good album).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 9 September 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

What I learned listening to the Sugababes album today - Heidi is REALLY CRUCIAL! She's got a very individual semi-spoken style which she doesn't use much.

3 is a good minimum number for a girl group too - just enough that it can look like a gang (i.e. want-to-join) rather than a scary dyad - the tension between these two is the Sugababes' schtick of course.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 9 September 2002 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

mmm sugababes have a maddening flaws that keep me hooked... lame sixth-form amateurishness to the singing no matter the gloss on production and especially watching the 2 oldskool members trying to combine what their pr guy told them to be like with their already hilarious idea of demure (can't look sexy with eyes THAT blank, soz)

isn't miss dynamite a popstar then? if so why not consarn it, i like her better than these 2

in read somewhere that the majority of kids don't know how to spell mystique anymore. howz that for influence?

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 9 September 2002 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Ms D is a pop star not a pop group - also her album's not as good as either M-T or the SBs (First track: I love weed, I hate coke. Yes that'll explain the half-ton of snoozy ballads then. Also her stuff's much more 'adult' - she's not as pop as these two.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 9 September 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"Why" by Mis-Teeq is absolutely great. Unfortuantely its their only good tune. Sugababes have lots of em. Sugababes win. Mis-Teeq need more Alesha. Alesha rowwrrr....esp. when she does her bit on "One night stand" it's just great.

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Sugababes sound kind of slow and heavy and bored in a cool way; the Mis-teeq songs I've just listened to are too hyperactive to be very enjoyable. "B With Me" sounds just like that Eve song with the steel drums. Definitely Sugababes.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 03:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Mis-Teeq have a *dirty secret* however, which is that their useless, almost non-singing third member is even more replacable than Heidi. She's got to go!

Cue another thread, perhaps: Which bands have the most obvious "luggage"?

The luckiest luggage in pop must be Ringo, but what about, er, all three/four of Atomic Kitten and (laut Damon) Graham from Blur?

< /contentious>

Charlie, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

"Why" by Mis-Teeq is absolutely great. Unfortuantely its their only good tune.

Michael what on earth are you talking about???

Everyone who hasn't heard it should listen to the Bump & Flex Dub of "Be With Me" (as opposed to the Vocal Edit that was released as the single) - it's basically Alesha rapping over a revved-up soca beat - double K-Rowwrrr!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

haha Alesha reminds me of my ex-girlfriend aside from her having never been in a band or a rapper. That steel band bit on B With Me is total insanity, if I was listening to it with a certain friend of mine he'd quote that Father Ted episode where they enter the Eurovision and Ted has a nightmare and wakes up "Dougal! We've got to lose that sax solo".

But I think the sheer mentalism of it works quite well, it's so out of the blue.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

MY TIME! SHOW TIME! HOOK LINE! LET'S ROLL! LET'S RIDE!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 10:57 (twenty-three years ago)

(btw the "luggage" thread already exists: but is the "ringo=luggage" theory exploded here or was that on another earlier thread?)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

six months pass...
Revive to talk about "eye candy". Everyone should check "Day Off" for a totall "look how we switch our styles up" workout.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

While I didn't quite enjoy the use of sampling on their biggest hit, Sugababes have still come up with a couple of decent pop singles following it. So I'll definitely go for Sugababes here.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 7 April 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

& Check "Nitro" "Scandalous" "Just For You" and especially "Dance Your Cares Away" for solid MC action -- the latter is like everything the B15 project promised but didn't stick around to deliver.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 7 April 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Baby Cham on "That's Just Not Me" brings the circa '98 dancehall bounce.

hey mutya from the sugababes is about to do a track with mc viper...so, the sugababes BECOME misteeq?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Will be putting a big thing about Eye Candy on my blog soon... I LOVE this record, especially the way the opening tack bites on Jerkins' production of Brandy's What About Us, the way Scandalous riffs on Dre's work on Mary J's Family Affair, then there's Baby Cham and Dave Kelly working together, a bhangra influenced track, latin houser and Day Off which I agree with Sterling about - it's like a meta-view of contemporary urban music and I love the conjunction of theme and form, too, (hey we're confident, sassy gals and have to pack a lot into our lovely blingy popstar lives - and, hey, we're doing exactly that on this track because we can do so much, we just can't possibly fit it all on this album!). Meanwhile, Dance Your Cares Away has been my iPod wake-up tune and last-thing-at-night record for the past 10 days or so, too, and as a result, my life's been really nice lately!

Dave Stelfox, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

alesha's head is fearfully tiny

zemko (bob), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really enjoying "Eye Candy", though maybe not any *more* than Lickin' On Both Sides. Oddly - since I've always thought I liked Mis-Teeq for their stylistic promiscuity - one of the most impressive aspects of the album is how thoroughly they nail the "straight" R&B of "My Song" and "Scandalous", both of which are just awesomely monolithic. I tend to find that I like either the most full on pop songs or the really experimental ones with lots of MCing, with some of the hard-edged R&B towards the end blurring into eachother (at least on initial listens). The ballads contain various degrees of awkwardness but at least they're all distinct from eachother. If it wasn't for them the album would sound astonishingly muscular.

I don't think I like the lyrics quite as much now that they've started writing themselves. Or at the least, I've spotted less moments of brilliance on a level with "the juice running loose from the forbidden fruit" or "my body's pulsating at the thought of you there".

Tentative thumbs up at the moment, anyway.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 14 April 2003 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay over the last week I've grown to absolutely adore this album. Can someone who has a real non-promo copy tell me who produces the title track? That's some amazing work right there. Also is anyone mystified by Su-Elise's rap on "Just For You"? Is she in fact a man in disguise? Is that why she never sings lead?

I'm now convinced as well that "Strawberrez" and "Home Tonight" are brilliant ballads. I love the backing harmonies for "you've got my temperature rising" in the latter - swoonworthy!

Also points in their favour 'cos when I interviewed Sabrina she was supa-clever and articulate.

I never did find out who produced "Eye Candy" the track, I don't think - still an urgent and key track!

Looking forward to hearing more of Alesha's solo stuff.

I quite like it when spambots revive random threads....

there should be a wild card thread everyday that the ILM supercomputer ( im thinking that thing in superman 3) just throws in there to shake us up.

The These Animal Men Search and Destroy thread for example.
