Mac darlings, where do you get your music? I used Mac Sattelite for audiogalaxy before they got shut down (sigh). Limewire can go fuck itself. Help!

As far as I know, gnutella is the only useful option for now. Try using Acquisition, which has a much better interface than the most common client, Limewire. If you can figure out how to use kdx (http://www.haxial.com/products/kdx/index2.html) you can check out my server at bedhead.ath.cx.. I have a lot of music there. Otherwise... wait for a soulseek client? ugh.

Try iSwipe from gttp://www.hillmanminx.com

Its free, it searchs gnutella, opennap and looks like theres going to be support to search kazaa and morpheus soon as well

PySoulseek, that can be made to run on MacOS X if you're at all familiar with the terminal, and step by step instructions for this are included.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 12 September 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

acquisition is at http://www.xlife.org/ and it is indeed very pleasant to use.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 12 September 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Soulseek via Virtual PC. I use version 3 of VPC, which shouldn't be too hard to find. Audiogalaxy worked a lot better with it than with Mac Satellite, too. I'm on Mac OS9, so I'm not sure how well all this would work with OSX.

Curt (cgould), Thursday, 12 September 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Yikes! mlMac is a multi-protocol simple application thingie that includes Soulseek and seems to work.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 3 October 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool deal. I've been using DirectConnect for a while now, and it's been okay, but not great. Hard to find good music-related hubs.

IMO, though, the best file-sharing solution is still the humble FTP server.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 3 October 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

soulseek is now available for OS X- check versiontracker.com ..I've yet to try it, but I believe it's an official client

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Friday, 3 October 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what really??!!

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a Mac and downloaded the SoulSeek Classic software last week.
It's changed my life.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The feedback comments suggest it doesn't actually work yet, s1utsky.

But do try mlMac! (had to open the relevant port in my firewall settings for the SoulSeek searches to work, btw).

x-post - Bruce, is that something different?

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

this is very exciting as I am "switching" this week and I had resigned myself to slsklssnss.

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

oh cant work out this soulseek business!

jed (jed_e_3), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The software I'm using is called Soulseek Classic 7.0, and I'm using it at work with OS9.2. It's a little buggy, but I've managed to download three or four albums in the last couple of says.
I found it with google; I think I typed in Soulseek and Mac.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Use Poisoned.

Connects to gnutella, openft, and FastTrack (aka Kazaa)

Stephen Morris, Saturday, 4 October 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

mlMac does Kazaa too btw.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 4 October 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Too bad it won't work for us suckers who couldn't/didn't upgrade to 10.2.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 4 October 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I love you people so much it hurts. How about a huge group hug?

Slutsky-just switching now? Good for you!

adaml (adaml), Saturday, 4 October 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

mlMac downloaded fine, but EVERY download has stalled/not started. Is there something obvious I'm missing? Help!

adaml (adaml), Saturday, 4 October 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm.. maybe I was lucky yesterday. Today I am having the same problem. Similar comments on the macupdate.com discussion boards.

The only thing I have got to work is Emma Bunton's 'Maybe', through the Fasttrack (kazaa) network. Mind you, PC owning friends say they often have the same problem with Soulseek.

Maybe I rejoiced too soon. Sorry!

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 4 October 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

No problem, N.

Am searching and have found "Soulseek X" on version Tracker which is tricky to set up. Have also been recommended something called "KDX". (????)

adaml (adaml), Saturday, 4 October 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Poisoned is another one that people fight the corner for.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 4 October 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

also - if you fancy it, page down this thread for instructions on how to get the unix (I think that's right) version of SoulSeek running on OS X.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 4 October 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Poisoned, but that's not working either. I'll give that (unix slsk) a try though.

adaml (adaml), Saturday, 4 October 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I just read Ed's advice. On second thoughts...

adaml (adaml), Saturday, 4 October 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

...maybe I'll try Virtual PC?

adaml (adaml), Saturday, 4 October 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

adam--I guess I'm switching proper finally as I'll be using my PB for all my writing/music/design/games/etc needs; I'd already used a PowerMac for a couple of years for video editing, but it isn't mine (actually it's shared among a bunch of people, so DV is all I can use it for, nothing personal)

(by that I mean "no personal apps," not "nothing personal, maaan")

s1utsky (slutsky), Saturday, 4 October 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
I have 8.6. My mom has OX 10 or whatever, Is it easy to upgrade? Will it automatically move my files or do I have to do it myself?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 9 January 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary,
I waited at 8.6 forever before recently upgrading to OSX. I was nervous about it slowing down my computer (g3 blue and white) but everything went smoothly and the computer runs much *better* now, even slightly faster, much to my surprise.

If you're going from 8 to X, the only hitch is you have to go to 9 first. You have to fill out this dumb form from their web site, then you can buy 9 at a pittance. If you follow their step-by-step instructions, your files should be fine. (They tell you to make some new folders and where to put everything. It's easy.)

Read here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/questions/howto.html.

Robomonkey (patronus), Friday, 9 January 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks. That is so wrong they make you buy 9 too. And I suppose once I get this running it will be time to buy 11. Damn Jobs.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 9 January 2004 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

so mac people (esp @d@m) I spent the afternoon installing nicotine (slsk client) and it was pretty easy and I am a happy man.

good step-by-step here:
