I actually posted this over on
ILE but was asked to also call attention to it here. To repeat my lead post:
"Getting into a bit of a phase right about now, I am -- I picked up Peepholism, the collection of Smiths/Moz sleeves put together by Jo Slee back in 1994, while in NZ, and it turned out to be a very very good thing indeed (thanks to Damien for pointing it out to me!). My vacation meant I missed the current tour with Jaguares, but this report of last night's show makes me incredibly jealous (the setlist alone!). Meanwhile, one of my fave local writers -- Gustavo Arellano, writes for the OC Weekly -- did a great cover story last week on his popularity in Southern California and specifically among Latinos. The subject's been discussed before in other articles but this is the best yet (and he gets in some solid notes on the preconceptions other writers have brought to the subject).
Me, I just love the fact that the performer so often damned in America for being the supposed king of the pale young wimps by macho/cryptohomophobic writers has gained this new role, and the more so because he's just still being his usual self. It's a good way to see how cultural assumptions in general can be so readily trashed on the one hand and on the other hand reconnected in ways that can surprise some though not all. So yay as always for the man -- though apparently Moz still has problems letting the court case go..."
Anyway, comment here, comment over on the other thread, do what thou wilt etc.

I have no idea why i did that - i just found the picture on my researching travails and it reminded me of that fella in True Lies who pretended to be a spy...bet he doesn't even like Morrissey.
La Moz is coming to Australia soon, la di-dah!

dont get me wrong i love the man......but the fact that he's neglecting to play anywhere on the east coast just pisses me off.

SPIN and I think the
NY Times beat the
OC Weekly to the (kind of old anyway) story about Morrissey's SoCal Latino fanbase. Also, a former friend of mine wrote a (wrong-headed) blurb in the
LA Weekly this week about how it's a non-story because Morrissey has "fans of all shades." I don't think she's ever actually been to a Moz concert or Smiths convention.

Although, yes, the
OC Weekly piece does a better job at coming close to why the Moz has resonance with Latinos.

Yeah, and which you said in the original "question," but my reading comprehension = dud.
