2002: A very week year (???)

Even DJ Shadow wasn't strong enough. Criticaly aclaimed albums like the one from The Streets lose their power after every listen. Be realistic you people: What did you really LOVE this year? What is the classic? (Daft Punk's Discovery is the 2001 classic LP for me)

Panagiotis Pileidis (Panagiotis Pileidis), Sunday, 22 September 2002 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

You're looking in the wrong places. That Streets album is horrible.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 22 September 2002 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

So far this year there haven't been nearly as many weeks. I think it will even out around December though.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 22 September 2002 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

A quick 5: Mull Historical Society, The Walkmen, Playgroup, Ikara Colt, and Wilco.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 22 September 2002 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Gonzales - Presidential Suite
Luke Slater - Alright On Top
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots

The Streets and Shadow float my boat too...but in any case, it's only September! Patience, glasshopper...

Charlie (Charlie), Sunday, 22 September 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

some that have really floored me

the walkmen- everyone who pretended to like me is gone
trail of dead- source tags and codes
wilco- yankee hotel foxtrot (i dont care, i love this disc)
sleater-kinney- one beat
ladytron- light and magic
pretty girls make graves- i dunno what its called

the classic for the year has to be the trail of dead disc, i havent heard a rock record that intense in ages.

todd swiss (eliti), Sunday, 22 September 2002 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Started weak, but improved like mad. Some selections of the really great:

Okkervil River, Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See

Greg Macpherson Band, Good Times are Coming Back Again

Wilco, YHF

The Bees, Sunshine Hit Me

Mum, Finally We Are No One

Norah Jones, Come Away With Me

Tom Waits, Alice

Damien Rice, O

Hank Dogs, Half Smile

Nina Nastasia, The Blackened Air

Reindeer Section, Son of Evil Reindeer

Kepler, Missionless Days

Gillian Welch, Time (The Revelator)

Low, Trust

And still to come, new albums (or second chances) by Sigur Ros, Songs:Ohia, Damien Jurado and Kathryn Williams.

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Sunday, 22 September 2002 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The Bees, Sunshine Hit Me

Spot on - magnificent. There are loads more...

Delgados - Hate
The Polyphonic Spree album
Pulp best of (yeah it's not out and no it probably doesn't count but...y'know)

Charlie (Charlie), Sunday, 22 September 2002 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree that it has gotten much better recently although i'd only include two of the records mentioned above. i would have no problem filling out a top 20 although last year it was easy doing a top 34 or so.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

You're looking in the wrong places. That Streets album is horrible.

i defy anyone to tell me ilm's demographic hasn't changed.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Sonic Youth's Murray Street is the best album of the year so far, and there've been a lot I've enjoyed this year (including Mum, Primal Scream, Wire, Boards of Canada and more). I'm currently enjoying the new Barry Adamson, but not sure how much it'll grow on me. And yes, there's a lot to look forward to, including Sigur Ros and THREE this week: Ron Sexsmith, Steve Earle and our pal Beck.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Less jess = a better ILM! Yay!

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

haha fuck off you indie cunt.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

HAHAHAHA

vic (vicc13), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

hey chupa, you hate "smelly indies" right? we finally have something in common!

anyway, josh has a question in a roundabout way...

Dubplatestyle: 2002: A very week year (???)
whirlyplato: 'less jess'!!
Dubplatestyle: what a retard
whirlyplato: that low album hasn't come out yet has it?!
Dubplatestyle: the terrorists have already won josh and they're attempting feeble sarcasm
Dubplatestyle: i'm glad your priorities are in the right place!
whirlyplato: got no time for indie cunts man
whirlyplato: do got time to see if my once favorite band has put out an album I can love

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, wouldn't mind less Josh on the nu-ILM, either.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd have to say Interpol - as much I love some of the other records that have come out this year, this one really feels like "the one people are talking about." But yeah, OPM has that pretty zeitgeist-y feel for sure. Are people still excited about that Xiu Xiu album? I haven't heard much of it, but it sounded intriguing from what I did hear. I have to admit, though, I *am* listening to less new stuff and more old stuff than I did last year. And Paul, it might be nice if you provided a little backup for your Streets hatred...

Clarke B., Monday, 23 September 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know how much I can back it up. I heard it (more than once, unfortunately) and hated it. It's pretty simple.

Can't believe I forgot Interpol, though. Easily one of the best 5 of the year.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, the Cripples?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

at least that right jess ; ) Can i be in your buddy list now? HAHA

Tho this thread does creeps the hell out of me: Wilco, Trail of Dead, Walkmen and Flaming Lips. Arrgh

vic (vicc13), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom Waits Alice and to a lesser extent Blood Money. Um, Lambchop's Is A Women which like Eno's Another Green World I'll never tire of.

Chris Krohn, Monday, 23 September 2002 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

bizarro-ILM!

Ess Kay (esskay), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

fake ilm bulletin board

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The number of people who wandered over here from the FMBB is actually pretty small. Placing blame on our little lot is ridiculous.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 23 September 2002 01:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Who needs Interpol when there's My Dad Is Dead? Marc Edwards must be kicking himself right about now.

hstencil, Monday, 23 September 2002 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm in love with the Sahara Hotnights cd that just came out right now.

lyra (lyra), Monday, 23 September 2002 01:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I listened to the Xiu Xiu album the other day for the first time in a while! Still maybe my favorite. Sleater-Kinney & Underworld are both really grate, too. Not a bad week nor a bad year.

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Monday, 23 September 2002 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

wot no prmlscrm? not heard it but it's meant to be kewl...

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 23 September 2002 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"placing blame"

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Opinions on Evil Heat seem to be mixed around here, but I like it an awful lot...

"placing blame" -- It's not out of character at all for you to do something that uninformed and foolish, so point the finger at whoever you want. I happen to think that this place finally has a great cross-section of all kinds of people, and it's exponentially more interesting now than even a year ago.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 23 September 2002 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

dj /rupture, cee-lo, trail of dead, wilco, anti-pop consortium, the streets, the flaming lips, playgroup, underworld, and horsepower still to come. solid.

ryan, Monday, 23 September 2002 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

plus pieter k.

ryan, Monday, 23 September 2002 01:53 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, paul you're not a moderator here, you know.

anyway, top 10 so far this year:

1. streets - original pirate material
2. sonic youth - murray street
3. xinlisupreme - tomorrow never comes
4. sugababes - angels with dirty faces
5. v/a - hustle! reggae disco
6. farben - textstar
7. boards of canada - geogaddi
8. v/a - kompakt total 4
9. mri - all that glitters
10. horsepower productions - in fine style (probably)

anyway, who really cares about "long term value". singles:

1. nelly - "hot in herre"
2. sugababes - "freak like me" (although, rockist alert: the album version is better.)
3. lcd soundsystem - "beat connection"
4. missy elliot - "work it"
5. the wildbunch - "danger! high voltage!"
6. cam'ron - "oh boy"
7. andrew wk - "party hard"
8. farben - "sez love to love you, baby"
9. xinlisupreme - "all you need is love was not true"
10. clipse - "grindin"

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 01:56 (twenty-three years ago)

What, if anything, does my non-moderator status have to do with what we were talking about?

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:05 (twenty-three years ago)

as implied, i've listened to the low album, and i do think it's very good.

i left out Sixteen Horsepower's "Folklore", and the Books' "Thought for Food" - both superb.

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

haha paul, are you terminally clueless or something? i think you lost the plot about 8 posts ago, if there ever was one ("placing blame"?!?) although your mother-like analysis was much appreciated, in the future i'll do well to curb my foolish ways. excuse me i have to go point my finger down my throat now.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

step off jess, the board has a "cross section of all kinds of people" these days!! i am the ambassador from kuala lumpur!!

only donut bitch can save us now

geeta (geeta), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:18 (twenty-three years ago)

haha yeah, too many fat, white brits before for my taste!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

2002 is only week [sic] if you live and die by the cycle of hype. how many records were supposed to save civilization this year? i think it worked out to something like 1.2 a week -- that sort of thing just makes everyone exhausted more than anything else.

maura (maura), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

simon trife will save rock 'n roll

geeta (geeta), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:23 (twenty-three years ago)

linkin park is the key

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"cross section of all kinds of people" = "less people who baffle and vex me with their off-putting, unironic love for pop music"

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

of course, we don't really love music.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

only donut bitch can save us now

Ur, um, sorry.. wasn't paying attention... was busy writing a new chapter in my upcoming book "Fuck Pop, Let's Authenticate!"

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Dunno about albums, a subpar year for singles, and subpar years still contain enough brilliance to make my life worth living (like subpar years for ILM?)

Saying this won't change anyone's mind, but "Weak Become Heroes" really is classic.

B:Rad (Brad), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

See, I want to reach out to this new cross section.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

ilm has been really good lately!!

(this is not irony!)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah!! it's donut bitch!! listen man we need your help

the board is "exponentially more interesting than it was a year ago"

2, 4, 16...uh shit what comes after that

geeta (geeta), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah yeah jess, go back to your handbag microhouse music

geeta: two muddafuckin fitty sick

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I got your back jess!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 23 September 2002 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, i've actually made a complete 180 turnaround from how i felt a few months ago (as i knew i would.) i still havent heard as many good songs/albums as 2001, but 2002 has really shaped up nicely.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a bit more comfortable now myself. The Boom Selection set, to which I currently listen, has helped.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

thanks jess.

I forgot about the Megadeth live album! Such a great version of "devil's island".

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The Delgados album... I could write about it for ages and ages and I still wouldn't make any sense. It's the best thing that's going to come out this year, in my opinion at least.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, I missed that, the Delgados are quite good.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Can't believe I forgot Interpol, though. Easily one of the best 5 of the year.
Paul, you are way too funny. (It was a toss-up between that line and Less Jess=Better ILM But I haven't been exposed to ILM as much as Interpol he last couple of weeks... I wish it was the other way around.)

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

'Finisterre' by Saint Etienne!!!!

It's [just] replaced 'Original Pirate Material' as my fave album this year.

DavidM (DavidM), Monday, 23 September 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

and the poster of the original "2002 = dire year for Pop?" thread also confirms more than pleased with this year! I'm even a Will Young fan now...

Mr. Cox - all we've got in common is the name...?!

Finney - re: Streets. better get crackin' on 2003, yer 2 for 2 my sahn "...the pressure, ... the pressure, whoah oh oh oh..."

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 23 September 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It figures that everyone starts hatin' Interpol when I really get into them. Fah.

All my other choices are boring bands everyone's heard of and already mentioned.

Nate Patrin, Monday, 23 September 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, just heard 'em Saturday for the first time in a record store. The only consolation, I guess, is the low retail price is akin to finding a My Dad Is Dead LP/CD used most places...

hstencil, Monday, 23 September 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my god! Vitalic live at fuse is the best thing I've heard this year, this is like hearing some amazing loud angry rock band for the first time and thinking "wow" except I've never found any loud angry rock band amazing, who the fuck needs anything other than repetition with riffs this good, I'm fuckin singing the riffs all day as I go around the house.

So in terms of instant reaction or whatever this is just the ultimate. Yet to be so blown away this year, though generally as taken with music as ever.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 23 September 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

2002 best year ever, I've totally forgotten what music I liked before 2002, it is best year ever.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 23 September 2002 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

One last thing about my earlier disagreement with jess. I wouldn't have paid him any attention if I hadn't been called an "indie cunt."

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 23 September 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

and tom and i love each other again, so a happy ending all around then.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 September 2002 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

not picking on ronan but -

Cosmos-Take Me With You
LCD Soundsystem-Losing My Edge.
X-Press 2-Lazy
Underworld-Two Months Off
Felix Da Housecat-Silver Screen Shower Scene (LRD remix)
Josh One-Contemplation-King Britt funk remix.
David Byrne-Shine Sister (X-Press 2 remix)
Ils-Next Level
Plump DJs-Big Groovy Fucker.
Phil Kieran-My House is Your House
Layo and Bushwacka-Love Story (Tim Deluxe remix)
Shakedown-At Night (original and the Kid Kreme remix)
The Streets-Weak Become Heroes (Ashley Beedle remix)

how many of these do you think you'll remember in ten years time? i'd put my money on 'lazy' (my personal most annoying single of 2002) and lcd soundsystem (coz it's a future classic).

i still don't get the streets. i don't think a week goes by that i don't get sent some streets remix package and every single one has totally underwhelmed me. it's like an ok joke that you enjoyed once but wouldn't really want to have to hear again.

new missy elliot - it ain't no get yr freak on.

and paul, don't worry about being an indie cunt. we know you can't help it.

stirmonster, Monday, 23 September 2002 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

not picking on ronan but -...how many of these do you think you'll remember in ten years time?

who fucking cares? singles are NOW.

and singles are 2002. I could probably very comfortably come up with 40 I like-to-love this year, and I bet almost none of 'em sound all that similar. [that'll be my next post, incidentally]

incidentally, "handbag microhouse" is my favorite genre of music ever; now if somebody would actually make some....

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 23 September 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I really hope nobody remembers "Losing My Edge" ten years from now!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 23 September 2002 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

My far-from-complete (like the year, duh, but I'm talking in year-to-date terms) feeling is that 2002 is 1981 redux--not because of the faux-hawks or vinyl clothing, but because albums that are supposed to lift us out of the slough aren't actually doing it, and because it's a ridiculously good year for singles, few of which are being heard beyond the aesthete-circles they're aimed at (and also because few of 'em sound all that much alike). Microhouse isn't hip-hop and Kompakt/Perlon aren't Sugarhill, so I don't think any new paradigms are being drawn, but I don't care and maybe I'm wrong anyway. Maybe mash-ups are the new hip-hop; people used to declare "rap's nothing new, Muhammad Ali/the Last Poets/Gil Scott-Heron have been doing it for years," which they were, but not quite like that, and while stuff like Evolution Control Committee and whoever did the classic "Bring the Noise" vs. "Higher State of Consciousness" track I heard on Fatboy Slim mixtapes back in '98 obviously predates "Stroke of Genius" et al, it's not quite the same--the new stuff's a movement, not a bunch of isolated incidents, and it feels unified, which counts for a lot. Feel free to pick holes in this as you wish.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 23 September 2002 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

ECC did the first mashup I ever heard but it wasn't the Wink/PE one, it was Herb Alpert/By The Time I Get To Arizona. Still sounds amazing now.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 23 September 2002 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I know they didn't do Wink/PE, that's why I said "whoever did...."

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 23 September 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't keep up like youse guys. I am starting to have some idea of what my favorite salsa songs were from 2001.

I do like this year's Willie Rosario "The Master of Rhythm and Swing Live in Puerto Rico."

Also, I'm very interested in checking out the Brother Ah reissues. (Brother Ah, one of many musicians to have worked with Sun Ra. Has gotten favorable reviews, so to speak, on the Saturn mailing list.)

Surprisingly, I kind of liked some of those Boom Selection bootleg thingies I listened to.

DeRayMi, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I really hope nobody remembers "Losing My Edge" ten years from now!

Tom, I want you to scare yourself with how much you remember of "Where's Me Jumper?" by the Sultans of Ping FC right now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

uh, i meant beat connection.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

ron (ron), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

"promus" - rhymes with "momus"

(ron you rock, etc)

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

when i was little, my blanket was called "the domis" (rhymes with promise, not with momus)

ron (ron), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

how many of these do you think you'll remember in ten years time?

this is an unusual thing to say (or, at least, i don't understand this). a) surely we live now, not in 10 years time?
b) surely you remember the things that make your youth?
c) its not easy to predict what will be remembered. generation after generation thinks its prog art opuses will be remembered and that the 'pop/dance tat' will be forgotten. each generation proved wrong. the dance records i was listening to when i was 16 (hurt you so, euphoria etc etc), i was continually told were plebian rubbish and that i should listen to either indie or progressive house (depending which rubbish magazine i was reading). those records i listen to continually still today

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 08:23 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth is otm. besides which 'take me with you' and 'contemplation' are two of the most life-affirming, dynamic, ecstatic pieces of music i've heard, ever, full-stop. i thought ilm was all about, you know, loving music. love comes and goes as we all know. enjoy while it lasts.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

logic of (a) (b) and (c) combined is confusing gareth => are you saying the 10-yr-rule is good or bad?

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 08:29 (twenty-three years ago)

(btw i think the idea that 2002 is a week yr for chartpop is deranged)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 08:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i've bought one (1) 2002 album this year! and 2001 is poss the most represented year in my (admittedly still pretty small) collection.

so singles then:

n.o.r.e - nothing'
underworld - two months off
goldenboy feat miss kittin - rippin kittin
nelly - hot in herrrrr-ruh
the first four seconds of cam'ron - hey ma
bootlegs that i can't be bothered to remember whether they came this year or the last
truth hurts- addictive
busta w diddy n pharrel - pass the courvarsieouroiur
ludacris - saturday
tweet - drunk

ps. i really hope list season hasn't properly started yet. can't you people at least contain yrselve's till late october/early november? cos once these things get started...

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 08:38 (twenty-three years ago)

insert some of that microhouse stuff as soon as i hear more of it, too. something off 'all that glitters' prob.

not akufen, tho.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 08:41 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm saying its bad, mark. but then i'm saying, look, even if you think its good you're still wrong because they do last. but b and c aren't relevant if you believe a. this is why the orig statemtn puzzles me, because either way it doesn't make sense

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 08:43 (twenty-three years ago)

pionson rock u rg ay

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The Interpol song ('PDA') on my free HMV playlist CD was exceptionally dreary, tho' prob not as bad as the tracks from My Computer (pathetic Spiritualised imitation), The Datsuns (gd gtr, rubbish singing + tune), Avbril Lavigne (jesus wept), The Crescent (I can't believe anyone likes this bunch of Nick Drake-nicking bedwetters) and Dashboard Confessional (the new acoustic revivial stops here.)

But Liars sounded OK.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I reckon I'll remember them all, just because alot of the list happen to be the singles which are getting hyped everywhere doesn't devalue it. Not really sure what the point is, I don't remember playing with a soother when I was 3 but I'm sure it was a fucking laugh.

I don't mean to sound snarky but why in the hell is that at all significant? Isn't "you won't remember these in ten years time" a kind of "bob dylan is better than everything you own" type argument, and I know you're not one of those stirmonster.

I've come to the point where one great single does as much for me as one great album, perhaps I've dumbed myself down or something, whatever, it's true, this may make them harder to remember.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

2002 a bad year?

Max Tundra - "Mastered By Guy At The Exchange"

That's very good. It came out last month.

James Larcombe, Tuesday, 24 September 2002 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I will remember!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 September 2002 09:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Cosmos-Take Me With You
LCD Soundsystem-Losing My Edge.
X-Press 2-Lazy
Underworld-Two Months Off
Felix Da Housecat-Silver Screen Shower Scene (LRD remix)
Layo and Bushwacka-Love Story (Tim Deluxe remix)
Shakedown-At Night (original and the Kid Kreme remix)
The Streets-Weak Become Heroes (Ashley Beedle remix)

i will remember all these in ten years time....right now i cant remember any big club tracks from 2001 and 2000 tho!

i guess i veered off topic a bit - it wasn't meant to be a diss or an all encompassing sweeping statement. i was thinking of compiling a list of my favourite singles of the year but as per usual, i found myself seriously challenged in the memory department. so, instead my mind wandered to thinking of my previous years 'best offs' and how relevant those records are to me now.

i agree that singles are about now, and even at times a quick fix of joyous desposability but i like specualting about what i will remember from a year way down the line. hey, i'm a freak.

so, apologies if i offended. i would never claim anything is better than anything else, just that i might like something better than something else. after all one man's fish is another man's poisson.

er, i guess the fx of the weekend have still to wear off.

can i just add that paul cox is still an indie cunt. remebmer that in scotland 'cunt' is a term of endearment (probably 'cos we love women's genitalia so much!)

why is gonzales considered good, i don't get it.
dj shadow album was real underpants of a record.
did the death cab for cutie album come out this year???that really stirred the cutesy indie-rocker in me.

i think i'm going to find out who gonzales press agent/publicist is, they obviuosly doing a great job, have been in careless talk costs lives twice in a row.

the streets album very good, liked the crap recording approach to the vocals, ie, turn up real loud and not give a fuck.
