announcing NaSoAlMo 2005

I'm so doing this. Anyone else game?

Paranoid Spice (kate), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I would love to do this but I don't have a recording setup right now. :(

I did forward it on to some people who will be interested, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I can do it this year, too much band stuff going on.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

this is the sort of thing i need to do to get myself in gear but november is already insane enough as it is. why can't it be january? not to say i couldn't just do it for the hell of it in january instead

vacuum cleaner (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

I'll do it in January with you. We can challenge each other.

November is absolutely insane for me. I'm probably going to sign up knowing I'll likely fail to complete it, but either way I could do it (again) in January too. ;)

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

Wow, this is great. I've actually been thinking about making a solo album and finally have an excuse.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 27 October 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I'm in the same position as Martin. Is this going to happen again after november? December would be great for me... perhaps I'll just do this 'unofficially'.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 27 October 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

I would do this, but I've decided I have to write my dissertation in the next six weeks :(

I had an idea for a band called "Band For A Day", it even has a song which goes "I'm in a band for a day, everyone shout hooray!" and then I play a crap guitar solo and throw stuff around, as I can't actually play anything.

We could always do an ilx version in December/January.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 30 October 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Hurting (and everyone else who might want to try it): go for it! It's fun and easy! -Ish!

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 31 October 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I've just signed up in spite of being something like 2500 miles from my studio for most of November. I figure it's the mother of invention and all that...

Thankfully, I do have a guitar with me here.

martin m. (mushrush), Monday, 31 October 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

But I'm kinda thinking of doing NaNoWriMo. I can't do both!

MM, where are you?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm in Nashville until Nov 26th. The company I work for now is based out here though normally I will telecommute.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I've signed up for it. I did so last year as well, but only got 15 minutes of works in progress out of it. Hopefully this year will be more successful.

Anyway, I've set up a MySpace band page for my effort. There will probably be MP3s, in some stage of completeness, there at some stage.

acb (acb), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

So it's a third of the way through the month now.

I must confess, I'm not making much progress due to other committments and workload and general crap in my life. Got two songs written, neither of them properly recorded.

Anyone else having any luck?

Stress Pig (kate), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

My girlfriend and I are doing this together (yes yes, not a solo album but we stipulated that we both have to contribute to each song) and we've got three songs recorded and two more half written. This would be all well and good if the burnout wasn't setting in and we weren't going to be going away for five days over Thanksgiving. :(

Anyway good luck to you Kate, and anyone else still doing this. :)

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

My initial writing burst subsided quite a bit so I've taken a small break and decided to practise the songs I have written and refine them a little and hope that the playing generates a second wave of writing. If I can pull off another writing spurt even half as good as the first, I'll definitely have enough material written to fill out more than 30 minutes.

I am a little worried about how much I'll be able to record though, since I get home to my studio on the afternoon of the 25th of November. I am trying to figure out if I want to just do all the songs sans arrangement (as just me and a guitar) or if I want to attempt to program drums or strings or whatever and play bass and other instruments in a 5 day spree while attempting to also work at my job. (Luckily I work from home, but even with that advantage my recording time will be limited.)

I really wish I'd have installed Sonar and Battery on my work laptop (which I have here with me). I may actually call my girlfriend and get her to mail my discs out here so I can do that.

martin m. (mushrush), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

I've got 4 songs w/o vox. Hardest part for me seems to be vocal melody. Drums/guitars/bass, though. I can't play guitar very well so they're quite simplistic and repetitive, but I'm having a blast and intend to finish in time. Rock on!

mcd (mcd), Saturday, 12 November 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

I wrote another song yesterday. That brings my song count up to 4. This one doesn't really have any words, just a repeated phrase over and over and over again, so I can have fun with the music and beatz in the background. It's possibly the slowest song I've ever written, at 105bpm.

But I guess that's what NaSoAlMo is about, getting to experiment and play around with things you wouldn't normally do.

Lady Totteringby-Gently (kate), Monday, 14 November 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
So how did everybody do? I wrote a bunch of stuff but then didn't have time to record it all, but I'm happy that I had the deadline since it brought the writing bug out in me again.

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 3 December 2005 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

I finished. I made up the length, though many of the tracks could still do with more work.

Anyway, my opus is online at http://dev.null.org/nasoalmo05/

acb (acb), Monday, 5 December 2005 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

We finished our album too. The last song ended up being kind of a last-minute jammy thing but it was only a minute and a half. I'm really pleased with some of the songs on it and early next year I think we're gonna fix the better ones up.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

Is that the royal "we?" I thought the whole point was to make a solo album. Thus all participants should be well covered by the pronoun "I."

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

heheheheheh

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Surely most "solo albums" employ more session musicians than band albums do!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, the unroyal "we" kind of cheated. (I mentioned it a few posts back.)

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

Surely most "solo albums" employ more session musicians than band albums do!

No doubt this is often true, but Mr. Wolk's rules indicate that session musicians aren't allowed...

Hey what do I know? I couldn't finish mine cause I got too concepty and wanted to record everything in a non-simple way. :)

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

snoball, Saturday, 31 January 2009 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

well, it's nice to have the choice, i guess

thomp, Sunday, 1 February 2009 16:12 (sixteen years ago)

Both aim for 14 songs in 28 days. FAWM concentrates on writing & demoing songs, while RPM focuses on recording a complete album. FAWM used to be solo songwriters only, but is now open to groups. RPM has always been open to solo acts and groups. It depends what people want out of it. FAWM might suit people who have problems songwriting, while RPM may be better for people who have problems actually recording songs. I fall into the later category.
