SATAN'S OWN YANQUI EVOL EMPYRE vs The Midwestern Young Bucks ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Brad Radke has 2 starts against the Yankees this season, going 6 2/3rds innings with 2 ERs and 7 innnings with 1 ER. Leiber finished September 5-0. I suspect this will be an even tighter game than last night.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God, I hope not. My nerve medication ran out last night and the pharmacist won't refill more than one perscription per week.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I can actually watch this game tonight and not feel I'm shirking my duties as a newly registered voter! Huzzah!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Vice-presidential debate, schmice-presidential debate.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Amen.

You know, I just realized how dopey I am when I asked re: the announcers for the Yanks / Twins game when IT WAS THE ONLY GAME FOX BROADCAST. I R Super Dave Osborne - watch me crash!

PS - LEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Is tonight Joe Morgan/John Miller? Can I look forward to a dozen repetitions of "fow-ell ball"?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh lordy I do hope that Joe Morgan extols & grossly exaggerates the virtues of Luis Rivas & Christian Guzman.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not even going to be able to watch tonight's game, as I have to screen effing Taxi at that very time. Which is just as well. Last year's Game 2 was absolutely brutal and I don't wish to see anything that has the potential to replay it.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Last year's Game 2 was absolutely brutal and I don't wish to see anything that has the potential to replay it."

B-b-b-but you're screening Taxi!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

LOL. Yeah, that meltdown will likely hold far more astringent aftereffects.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave how come you're just "newly" registered? I thought you were way older than 18.

Back to McCarver, I'm pretty sure that he said verbatim "at this point in the game, a walk is as good as a homerun" and obv. it isn't. He didn't, to my recollection, throw in "with the tying run at the plate" clause (which even then is sorta weak imo).

Go Twins.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I moved a few years back, and was previously registered in my former town of residence - I just re-registered in my "new" locale, s'all. (Plz don't remind me of my age, Stence.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"A walk is ESSENTIALLY ALMOST JUST AS GOOD as a home run, assuming that the next batter, who represents the tying run, doesn't GIDP; but a double would be even better than a walk, and much closer to being AS GOOD AS A HOME RUN"

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

whatever Dave you're younger than me! Sheesh.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

how about:

a walk IS AS GOOD AS a walk
a single IS AS GOOD AS a single
a double IS AS GOOD AS a double
a triple IS AS GOOD AS a triple
a homerun IS AS GOOD AS a homerun?

naw, that'd would be too simple, right?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

actually mccarver prefaced that with something like "to a closer's mentality at this point in the game.." fwiw.

i really don't get this pitch-tipping claim re santana. if a FB/change pitcher was tipping, he'd be meat (johan santana april-may edition), and the yankees certainly wouldn've have been frozen/flailing like they did on occasion. like i said, if he was just tipping sporadically i suppose it's possible, but i seriously doubt he was doing it the whole way thru (and if he was, then that game was REALLY pathetic). but as i see it right now he didn't pitch his best, the yankees have a good offense, and he got knocked around a bit.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Says Gleeman:

"Another big play occurred with the game tied in the bottom of the first inning, as the Yankees had runners on first and second with one out. With Bernie Williams at the plate, FOX announcer Tim McCarver uttered what has to be the leader in the clubhouse for Dumbest Statement of the Postseason, saying, "Joe Torre can start the runners here because there's a contact pitcher on the mound."

Some of you may be aware of the fact that the pitcher on the mound was Santana and he led the American League with 265 strikeouts this season, striking out 30.1% of the batters he faced and getting nearly 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. Sure enough, when Torre sent the runners on a 3-2 pitch, Santana got Williams to strike out on a changeup and Blanco threw Rodriguez out at third by 10 feet. The inning was over and the first of what turned out to be many threats was averted."

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does Bernie Williams hit clean-up for the Yanq's instead of Matsui or even Posada?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, did mccarver actually say that?? i think my mind must've automatically translated it as "contact hitter at the plate".

xpost you know why - because he's OLD!!

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Twins on the board first! God, it's going to be tough to tear myself away from this game in twenty minutes!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh. Jeter's helping me get the urge to do so.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I missed Jeter's homer -- was it really as "Ruthian, Jacksonian, gargantuan, majestic, humungous, gigantic, etc." as Miller and Morgan made it out to be.

Usually Jon Miller doesn't gush so embarassingly.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't know. I was already packing my backpack. And now, with the Twins looking in control of their offensive game for the first time in a while, I think I'll be off for the next few hours.

If I come back to find that the Yanqs have come back for a 10-3 win, I'll just puke.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The homer hit the black seats in center field, so HELL YEAH!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF? Joe Morgan: "If you remove the HRs, the Yankees are only hitting .242 with RISP." SO?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

So just imagine what they'd be hitting w/RISP if you removed the strikeouts! Clutch City, population Jeter.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

A-Rod just homered: 4-3 NYY.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Jeter must be visiting the broadcast booth between innings to have a fellatio threesome with Joe and Jon. Because these accolades are really getting ridiculous.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

SHAME ON YOU JON MILLER!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

AWESOME! I missed it because I was on the phone talking to a friend about why Bush is (or in my case, is not) the way to go.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Remember, it's Gooz-MON. WTF is up with Jon Miller's painfully ethnically "correct" pronunciations of Latino names?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that IS the correct pronounciation, isn't it? We're just so used to hearing it said incorrectly.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

If Miller were broadcasting for a primarily Dominican audience, I could see the point of it, but most Americans pronounce it phonetically and I don't see why Miller makes such a production out of it.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Remember, it's Gooz-MON. WTF is up with Jon Miller's painfully ethnically "correct" pronunciations of Latino names?

Probably because he's a San Francisco resident and it's not that uncommon out here... ?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Gygax is gellin' like Magellan!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't matter who the audience is, proper pronounciation is proper pronounciation. Most Americans don't pronounce the names phonetically, they pronounce them incorrectly. Just because we non-Spanish speakers are used to it doen't make it any more correct.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Duane Kuiper (one of Miller's fellow SF broadcasters) also nails down Latin American, Japanese, and Korean names as accurately as possible.

For instance, the Padres have a (totally awesome) reliever named Akinori Otsuka from Japan. I imagine that the average US person would pronounce his last name "Ott Soo Ka". Kuiper says, "Oats Ka" which is a very Tokyo-accented way of saying it (Otsuka is from Chiba prefecture, not far from Tokyo). You might hear it pronounced "Oh Tsoo Ka" in the south, but I was impressed with Kuiper's accent. ^_^

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah, I was half-listening to Kuiper last week in a SF-Padres game and every time I heard him say "Osuna" I thought "he's just butchering that name." Sure 'nuff, I find out days later that Antonio Osuna is still alive and well and pitching mop-up relief for the Pads.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, for future reference my name is pronounced Back-ed Bee-yan Tay-eth; it's Croatian. ;)

Peach Cobbler wha?

C'mon Twinkies!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Peach Cobbler is soooo awesome... I just heard that the other day. They belong on my 1992 thread on TEH NOIZE BOARD. That was more like 95 or 96 though I think.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh, doze twinkies!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

So why did Rivera pitch last night? The Twins have the benefit of having faced him less than 24 hours ago, and he's got five outs to get in this one. I don't get it.

mattbot (mattbot), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Remember, it's "Yost" Visser if you're keeping tabs. ;)

Peach Cobbler was '95. I just shipped a box o' 50 of these to R1ck Br0wn a few months ago; yes, believe it or not I still have some in stock!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It's always nice to see Skeletor struggle.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Pitching him last night was a good move ... closer mismanagement is common in the postseason. That is, when managing at home, they save their closer in the late innings to protect the lead that never comes.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

TWINKIES TWINKIES LITTLE STARS!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 7 October 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't want to jinx anyone, but common sense would indicate that Santana will be playing Game 4 and the Twins can count on having that one in the bag, especially what with Santana having gotten all of "that" out of his system in Game 1. Which makes tomorrow's game the big question mark in the series. A really big question mark.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 7 October 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Tonight's likely 2b per Gardy:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6485

I don't much care that he's a lifetime .219 batter ... an .886 OPS in 30 games this year? Where the hell's he been, giving Rivas Band-Aids?

There was a SportsCenter promo late in the Braves' game that asked "Jeter: best ever?" Please tell me the story asked if he was the best bi-racial shortstop ever. (Given the NY Times story today with "Jeter" and "Magic" in the headline, I s'pose not.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 8 October 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Arguably, the best shortstop ever does play for the Yankees. But it's not Jeter.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 8 October 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn ... still 3-1. I'm going out to watch the rest of the game ... how many new posts will be here when I get back? 50? 150? How many times will Dan write the word "FUCK" tonight?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 8 October 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

prolly not too many; it's friday night and the extroverts are all outside DOING THINGS (terribly hard on one's health; don't try it) whilst the introverts cozy up and watch the debate or some panzy shit like that

meanwhile i'll be turning this off the second it gets tight because i just don't have the stomach for these things anymore

John (jdahlem), Friday, 8 October 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not really positive I'm going to watch this much longer. This is reminding me a tad too much of last year at the moment. I dunno, something about the score stalling out ominously. At least the Yanqs' ABs have seemed by and large a lot shorter than the Twins', but I'm not happy at the moment.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 9 October 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I think the moment they showed Loshe warming up in the bullpen at the top of the 2nd, I was inching awfully close to just giving in to the presidential debates.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 9 October 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ouch. It really is a replay of last season and I am officially switching to the debates.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 9 October 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

This is an endless nightmare of shit

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Saturday, 9 October 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 9 October 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, what happened?

By the way, John Kerry was MASTERFUL tonight in the debate if you missed it. Bush was better than he was last week, but by the end of tonight's debate, I could have spouted off his talking points.

Anyway, time to check the line score and find out what went wrong for Minny.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Saturday, 9 October 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 9 October 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That game sure did take me out of this series. I expect a win tomorrow, but I will not be at all surprised to pay witness to a nightmarish Sunday.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 9 October 2004 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I did assume that things would be slow on a Friday, but hey, the Presidential debate thread got 700 posts!

After seeing Boston tonight, a small part of me doesn't mind if the Yankees win, since Boston looks so incredibly strong.

It's amazing that Torre has so little faith in his bullpen that he would bring Rivera into the game with a six run lead -- obviously he didn't want to give the MIN hitters one extra iota of confidence, or chip away at the confidence of his own guys.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 October 2004 06:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm officially on the Yankees side right now. I don't want the damn Red Sox to steamroll into the World Series. Screw that. I want a competitive ALCS.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Saturday, 9 October 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess that would've been funny if you hadn't...miscounted? the real crime of course was leaving him in, but that destroys any parallel b/w the two since the absurdity of la russa's move was that kline would only face the one final batter, which wouldn't "sharpen" him or tell the manager any more about his health that throwing a few pitches in a bullpen session would.

i wouldn't be so quick in assuming the yanks would play the sox any tighter than the twins would. ok, so logic is on your side, but i'm not optimistic.

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 9 October 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa, i normally don't bother w/ proofreading or correcting grammar/spelling mistakes but i'll grant you i could've used "would" a bit less there. i'm sure there are more than a couple jokes concerning erections and last night's presidential debate i could've used to get this point across but ah well.

but seriously folks should santana be starting tonight's game?

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 9 October 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

but seriously folks should santana be starting tonight's game?

Yes, it's a "must-win" situation for the Twins and he's their best pitcher.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i think you're right, but game 5 will also be a "must-win", and there's not much reason to give one precedence over the other. i think the question is

"is a matchup of santana on 3 days rest vs. vazquez, followed by a matchup of radke vs. mussina, better for us than a matchup of lohse vs. vazquez, followed by full-strength santana vs. mussina?"

and i'd say it is, because wow lohse has really sucked this year.

how's santana historically on 3 days rest? i think last year he got injured after 4 innings or thereabouts, and that might've been his only short-rest start.

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

from hardball times re: the ALCS

"No matter who advances, they will be playing the Red Sox in the ALCS starting Tuesday. By sweeping the Twins, the Red Sox can set their rotation up just as they want it, throwing Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez out on the road right away. This outcome hurts Minnesota more than it does the Yankees, as the Twins have a much more front-heavy rotation than New York. With Minnesota having to go five to win, Johan Santana can't pitch until Game Two at the very earliest, and Brad Radke can't pitch until Game Three, forcing the Twins to pitch Carlos Silva in the opener, and -- gulp -- Kyle "5.34 ERA" Lohse in Game Four.

If the Yankees prevail in five, they can start Jon Lieber in Game One -- not the ideal opponent for Schilling, but he did take a no-hitter into the seventh against Boston in a crucial game in September -- with Kevin Brown in Game Two and Mike Mussina in Game Three, needing to use Javier Vazquez only once in Game Four. Should the Yankees finish the series today, they'll be able to start Mussina in Game One. That rotation hardly negates Boston's starting two, but in a potential Game Seven the Yankees might have Mussina against Bronson Arroyo, though of course all the pitchers but Pedro and Brown will be available in the bullpen."

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i think you're right, but game 5 will also be a "must-win", and there's not much reason to give one precedence over the other.

if minnesota didn't pitch Santana and lost today, exactly how much regret would the mgmnt feel?

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 9 October 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Twins have to start Santana today, if they lose, the season is over. They can worry about tomorrow after today.

For the Twins to get over the hump, they are going to have to score some runs and expose the Yanks gimpy starting pitching. They haven't been able to do this as of yet and it is the main reason they will probably lose this series.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 9 October 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

They've decided to start Santana today ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 October 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

his change looks like it has a bit more bite, but i'm not sure he knows exactly where it's going; he's again having trouble locating. we'll see what happens.

mattbot (mattbot), Saturday, 9 October 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It was? I only listened on the radio, while battling an epic headache. I drifted in and out, but was awake for the tying 8th inning debacle.
