draconian proposal

thought that came to mind that might improve ilm by cutting down on anonytrolls and boring indie new guy fuxxx and ysi begzorz - is there anyway to make it so that a poster can't start a thread until after a month (or some period of time - two weeks, five days, three years, whatever) after their first post? i'm thinking this will definitely cut down on people who've never posted before starting four threads asking for ysi's of the new yeah yeah yeahs or posting the eigth version of a question that's been asked before (two times in the past month) and it would definitely cutdown on anonytroll wimps 'making a statement' or whatever the fuck. no idea the logistical difficulty (presumably the same, um, mechanism that prevents posters from posting under other's names could come into play???) and there might be other very good reasons this is a very bad idea but i thought i'd throw the concept out there - whutchawthink?

not draconian enuff

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

ok for example, of the last 25 threads started on ilm 13 were started by people who'd never posted before (great questions btw - 'top ten artists of all time' - fucking ponderous man), one of the other questions was started by 'i hate ned raggett' who's pretty much exactly what i'm talking about by anonymous pussy (how big a pussy do you have to be to be afraid of NED???? what's the worst he's gonna do - 'enjoy the silence bitch'?) and two others are by posters who've posted twice before and another is by xgurggleglgllg who makes mr. snrub look like fucking will shortz.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:41 (twenty years ago)

this is a good idea. we need it, i think.

ALSO:

something that crossed my mind the other day: what about an interstitial "STOP: THINGS TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU ASK A NEW QUESTION" type page that would precede the new question form (only on ilm). we could use it to discourage YSI/piracy posts and pointless lists and (perhaps most importantly) to implore people to use the archive search function before they ask a new question. i don't know how code intensive this would be, but you could even build a little search archive box into the form. (yes? no?)

this would also be a good place to give a quick primer on good thread topics (ie. "[artist x] - [album x]") vs. bad ones (80% of pfork/vv/grout threads). the beauty of it would be that it'd also serve as a sort of rules & regs contract which would make any subseqent thread deletions and/or userip bans pretty elementary -> "the rules were right there!"

i think it may be time to admit the battle is lost

ham'ron (dubplatestyle), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Split up the board?

I Like Music Very Much / I Love Music Professionally?

(oh, and please send me an invite to the advanced b... wait... er... nevermind)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:56 (twenty years ago)

Fuxake.

Default state for ilm threads = search engine indexing OFF.

At least 2/3 of the shit thread starters wd never even find the board if that were the case, I'm sure.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 27 February 2006 21:58 (twenty years ago)

there's no reason we couldn't do all of these things

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:00 (twenty years ago)

all while admitting the battle is lost

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:03 (twenty years ago)

seriously though a multiverse option might be a good idea

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:05 (twenty years ago)

i'm happy enough with the regular ilm and the other one, where dom talks to his stuffed animals

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

wait - is 'dom passantino' actually kate? i'd heard it was orbit's new alias. you're referring to kate's 'i don't mind everything' board/padded cell right?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

All new questions/replies appear in a kind of ILM Draft board.

Good discussions get promoted to ILM Proper by Quality Control users (who can only do that, no other admin rights)

?

StanM (StanM), Monday, 27 February 2006 22:12 (twenty years ago)

for example there wouldn't be shit like this - The Pick of Destiny

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:41 (twenty years ago)

TROLLING IS RUINING ILM. Meanwhile, here's some trolling.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:53 (twenty years ago)

But you know, I support these measures if they'll allow you crazy kids to post more riveting "A hipster walked past me today (216 replies)" threads.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:54 (twenty years ago)

What we need are more threads about bees, amirite?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 00:55 (twenty years ago)

d00dz let's just formally request that the codemagicians start by letting only registered users post threads. then we can go from there.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 04:02 (twenty years ago)

and by post threads i mean start new threads, obv.

also i agree on this madness that has burst forth in like the last week or two out of fuckin nowhere.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 04:03 (twenty years ago)

that probably makes sense as a starting point (as it would obviously need to be implemented as well)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 04:32 (twenty years ago)

once there's code in place to special-case ilm posting then modifying the guidelines to it won't be too hard, is the thing.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 05:42 (twenty years ago)

haw haw stoopid noobs

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure what you guys really expect from ILM now after 5 years here. WHAT ELSE CAN BE LEARNED?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:26 (twenty years ago)

"Marching and heiling, heiling and marching. In him is planted no seed of laughter, hope, tolerance or mercy. For him - only heiling and marching, marching and heiling. The grim years of regimentation have done their work. Now he's a good Nazi. He sees no more than the party wants him to. He says nothing but what the party wants him to say. And he does nothing than what the party wants him to do. And so he marches, with millions of comrades, trampling on the rights of others. For now, his education is complete. His education...for death."

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 10:28 (twenty years ago)

I would also support more threads about bees, cans of or not

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 28 February 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

This current proliferation of useless threadstartings makes one long for a more innocent time on ILM, namely Mike Costello's Lost Classic series of the summer of 2005.

Hahah, I only just noticed this.

Can we expand this to stop Dom from posting anything until he gets his brain back?

Dan (Just Curious) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 1 March 2006 05:36 (twenty years ago)

Funny, I thought Dom recently got his brain back.
