Nice one, HITLER!

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Thursday, 6 April 2006 07:25 (twenty years ago)

But you're OK with links to Copyrighted images all over the shop?

stet (stet), Thursday, 6 April 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

YES THAT'S EXACTLY THE SAME THING

A Van That's Loaded With YSI? (noodle vague), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

It is to gay photographers. they just don't have an association of cunts.

stet (stet), Thursday, 6 April 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Well, I want to hear what a gay pornographer has to say about this.

A Van That's Loaded With YSI? (noodle vague), Thursday, 6 April 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

They're going to be locked up soon. Like m1ckey. And Andrew.

But you're OK with links to Copyrighted images all over the shop?
-- stet (vmdnb900...) (webmail), April 6th, 2006 10:49 AM. (stet) (later) (link)

The difference is that the copywrited images are usually hosted on the owner's server and they have the ability to refuse hotlinks, etc

Fight the Real Enemy -- Tasti D-Lite (ex machina), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

zuh? no copywrited music is hosted here either...

YS! REFUGEES COME HERE, Thursday, 6 April 2006 18:44 (twenty years ago)

So... Any idea when a similar kneejerk overreaction tohandling of the YouTube phenomenon is due?

StanM (StanM), Friday, 7 April 2006 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Considering active legal action against individuals is currently happening in many countries re music downloads, which is hardly the same thing as a bunch of flaky old VHS recordings on youtube, I think Andrew's done something bloody sensible. He owns the server after all.

Trayce is not a guy! (trayce), Friday, 7 April 2006 03:33 (twenty years ago)

All property is theft. You can't "own" a server. PAAAAH TO THE PEOPLE!

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 7 April 2006 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Any idea when a similar kneejerk overreaction

It's an overreaction to try and sheild myself from legal action? What planet are you living on?

(Note: these questions are wholly rhetorical in nature. I have no desire to enter into a dialogue with you.)

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 7 April 2006 06:12 (twenty years ago)

Esteban, I hope you find yourself amusing because I'm pretty sure nobody else does.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 7 April 2006 06:15 (twenty years ago)

No, of course it isn't.

I meant that banning all ysi's was an overreaction. Those threads have introduced a lot of people to a lot of interesting music, and lots of people have subsequently explored the artists, remixers and labels featured. I know I've bought quite a lot of stuff because of those threads (where no readily available material, no full releases should have been linked to, a simple rule that admins could have but never enforced) and I will miss them.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 7 April 2006 06:56 (twenty years ago)

I apologise for activating your angry gland.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 7 April 2006 07:09 (twenty years ago)

why did you lock the ysi crew thread andrew?

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Friday, 7 April 2006 07:21 (twenty years ago)

why do you people ask so many irrelevant questions?

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 7 April 2006 07:29 (twenty years ago)

irrelevant how?

Real Goths Don't Wear Black (Enrique), Friday, 7 April 2006 07:30 (twenty years ago)

No, of course it isn't. I meant that banning all ysi's was an overreaction.

But "banning all ysi's" == "sheild myself from legal action". Simple, really.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 7 April 2006 07:31 (twenty years ago)

why did you lock the ysi crew thread andrew?

Jess did. I just unlocked it briefly to post a reply.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 7 April 2006 07:32 (twenty years ago)

k. wtf @ jess.

Ok. Drastic, though. But I'll pipe down now. (otherwise people would think I'm one of those legendary internet rebels too, and I'm not)

StanM (StanM), Friday, 7 April 2006 07:53 (twenty years ago)

But "banning all ysi's" == "sheild myself from legal action". Simple, really.

Yeah... you do realise that linking ten MP3s together via BeatMapper doesn't actually absolve you of legal responsibility, right?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 7 April 2006 08:58 (twenty years ago)

This proves you're totally out of tune with ILX, chief.

i don't even know who that is

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 7 April 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Has ILM even received anything like a C&D over this? Has anyone, anywhere, ever been served a C&D for YSI links? They're not stored on our server, our server doesn't facilitate them like it does bittorrent ... I'd say there was a flavour of over-reaction, yes.

If YSI themselves aren't getting done for it, well, hmm.

stet (stet), Friday, 7 April 2006 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Attention: lol

smokemon (eman), Friday, 7 April 2006 12:09 (twenty years ago)

Has ILM even received anything like a C&D over this?

"ILM" will never receive a C&D over something like this. If a C&D is served to anyone over this, it'll be to me. I do not want to be on the receiving end of any kind of legal paperwork from anyone associated with the recording industry (unless it's a record deal).

Honestly, how much simpler does it need to be? I do not want to be seen as openly facilitating music piracy. Sorry.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 7 April 2006 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Actually, "ILM" did get threatened with one once (or rather some mods did), and that YSI thread was promptly removed. The request came from a rather nice party that was under some legal pressure of its own regarding the material that made its way to the thread. I'm probably butchering the story somewhat, but that's the gist.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Honestly, how much simpler does it need to be? I do not want to be seen as openly facilitating music piracy. Sorry.

-- Andrew (n...), April 7th, 2006. (enneff) (later)

Apart from when said pirates are distrubiting not just one song, but 10 or 12 linked together. That's 12 times the lawsuits!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

ILM introduced me to a ton of new and interesting music way before the rampant YSI craze.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:47 (twenty years ago)

any chance we can unlock this thread?

Now that YSI's have been banished from ILX, where is the best place to pay for downloading obscure/rare tracks

I think it'd be good (and self-serving), to be able to discuss where you can buy good music online.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 7 April 2006 13:51 (twenty years ago)

aren't there a billion places where the justice fans can set up message boards for free to continue ysi-ing each other shitty remixes? go do it there!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Give Andrew a break, people (people who aren't giving him a break). He maintains the server voluntarily, he's within his rights to be cautious. It's not like he abuses his power as the server maintainer.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:34 (twenty years ago)

It's not like he abuses his power...

Except when it comes to deleting entire boards for no reason except to be a jerk!

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

why not start your own board somewhere else? somewhere not on the computer of a guy who is obviously not friendly to you and yours?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

Because there are people here who actually enjoy our brand of post-ironic commentary and Geir jokes, and refuse to deprive these good people of it!

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:46 (twenty years ago)

start a petition then

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm going to be post-post-ironic. And that means I'm going to sleep.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Friday, 7 April 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm inclined to agree with Dan Selzer in that the 'where is the best place to pay for downloading obscure/rare tracks' thread COULD be unlocked and used for good exchange of info, ideas, thoughts.

there are lots of threads in the archives about downloading, but none really concerned about legal/paid for downloading that i noticed, tho i may have missed one.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

The admins are going to have a real hard time dealing with this, though.

Suppose these two were called something else instead of just showing the links like that?

StanM (StanM), Friday, 7 April 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

what about the piddly little YSI thread on ILG? we uploaded a coupla abandonware games, and filled the rest of it with youtube vids...

OK this thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:59 (twenty years ago)

friendship7, Saturday, 8 April 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

The admins are going to have a real hard time dealing with this, though.

I don't expect them to be able to catch 100% of the links. If they can just delete the ones they find, that's good enough by me. I just want it to be clear to any outside eyes that music piracy via this board is not sanctioned by me or the other moderators.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 9 April 2006 02:51 (twenty years ago)

It's probably worth whacking some sort of disclaimer on the front page/in the FAQ stating just that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 9 April 2006 08:56 (twenty years ago)

It's prob'ly worth IP banning all the morons that don't understand why linking copywritten music is a bad idea.

Agreed.

(Thanks for that Drokz track, by the way.)

stet (stet), Sunday, 9 April 2006 23:50 (twenty years ago)

do you... actually want something? or should we just leave you to keep whinging about whatever it is?

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Monday, 10 April 2006 00:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm responding to this:

because it pissed me off.

stet (stet), Monday, 10 April 2006 00:51 (twenty years ago)

i think he was jokin'.. but you never know

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Monday, 10 April 2006 01:02 (twenty years ago)

You don't smoke rocks at a friend's place, that's a big no unless the offer.

But they have to let you snort a few lines - otherwise, are they really your friends?

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Monday, 10 April 2006 02:40 (twenty years ago)

I thought smoking rocks was what people like Tuomas did in large naked groups in finnish saunas.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 10 April 2006 03:32 (twenty years ago)

not for nothing but isn't there a legal precedent (in the states anyway) that holds that if moderators delete a specific type of content, there's no reason to expect them not to delete every instance of that content type? i'm not sure if a) that ruling only applies to material that is obscene or b) it has been superseded by later court decisions/laws (i believe that the cda allows cherry-pick deletion of obscene material 'for the children'), but it's probably something worth noting, as it seems like most of the litigation-rabid companies are located in the u.s. ...

maura (maura), Monday, 10 April 2006 12:28 (twenty years ago)

of course the server isn't hosted in the u.s., not that i remember if that even matters or not.
