Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 2 February 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

Hasil Adkins (pronounced "Hassil," not "Haysil") (April 29, 1937 - April 26, 2005), One-man band, was an Appalachian country, rock and roll, blues musician though frequently considered rockabilly and sometimes primitive jazz.

Hasil was born desolate in Boone County, West Virginia, where he lived throughout his life. He was the youngest of 10 children, and was both severely depressive and hyperactive.

Nicknamed "The Haze", Adkins, claimed a repertoire of over 9000 songs including over 7000 original compositions, recorded scores of small, micro-label 45s and is responsible for the birth of Norton Records, Psychobilly and a dance called "The Hunch".

His music can be sad, humorous and/or frantic. He was well known for shrieking certain catchphrases, such as "commodity meat", "nobody got the Z-Man's back", and "Ban Louis Jagger"

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 5 February 2007 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah this sort of thing is overstepping the mark totally but claiming that mod non-intervention is a tacit endorsement of bullying or whatever is ludicrous.

Greg, the reason you were told to fuck off was because you were making a point for the sake of making a point. WE KNOW people behave like dicks to each other on ILX but what really do you expect the mods to do about it, short of banning everyone who has ever made a personal attack on anyone?

That said, if Louis wants the thread deleted he has every right for it to be deleted, this has always been the case. There's nothing anyone will do about the threads Louis has started under his own name - tough tittes basically Louis. You should really have had more foresight. Anyway, from the FAQ:

Can threads be deleted? What is locking a thread?
Threads can be deleted but we don't like to do it often and will not delete a thread apart from in exceptional circumstances. These include:
- Libellous threads. If we think a thread might be libellous it might be deleted. This hasn't happened very often.

- Personal threads. If a thread is started discussing a registered user or their actions, that user has the right to ask for it to be deleted or locked. The thread does not have to be an attack on the user. This does not apply to threads users start themselves and later regret.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

So what I'm saying is, can an IRE mod or a site admin just delete the thread and be done with it?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

Also Louis I think people might have a bit more sympathy with you if you didn't clearly love the attention and enjoy the ridicule 95% of the time. If you're that bothered by people doing shit like this then STOP FUCKING ENCOURAGING IT.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:22 (eighteen years ago)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

Do you know how many posters could potentially be labelled 'serial offenders'? Attempting to moderate ILX into a nice cosy toothless community is pretty much impossible anyway.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 February 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure that everybody, including yourself, knows who the worst, more persistent offenders are.
I'm certainly not going to get drawn into naming names and fingerpointing on the boards. If you really want to discuss this, it could be done via email.

As for the "me too! crap", I merely want to add my voice to some of these issues. I guess i should just spam the word COSIGN in all caps, if I want to be taken seriously. I figured that if more people agree, then something is more likely to be done.

I'm not all for making ILX into a cuddlefest, but the personal attacks that a number of posters suffer really don't contribute much to the board. I'm really not very surprised that my pointing this out has made me something of a target.

A very RETIRED MOD COMMENTS:
I'm sure that everybody, including yourself, knows who the worst, more persistent offenders are

this post pretty distils exactly the passive-aggressive bullshit you always opt for, greg, which is why i said "fuck off" to you on the other thread -- you are a committed partisan in these arguments consistently pretending to be the saintly greg kitten hovering untained above all, with the directest possible line to angelic morality and a high-falutin distaste for any and all practical attempts to solve problems

you "merely adding yr voice" = you showily clambering up onto yr unearned high horse without ever having the minimal courtesy to make the slightest constructive contribution

moderation is BORING, TIRESOME, UNTHANKED, pointlessly COMPLICATED -- courtesy ppl who perfectly well know better and nevertheless persist in their addiction to being repeat dicks to one another -- and unavoidably locked into disappointing at least half the expectant crowd

the mods are not telepathic

(i am a retired mod = i still have the power but have entirely lost the inclination, thx in part to having to constantly to process the low-level sniping of otherwise perfectly inoffensive posters like you)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:16 (eighteen years ago)

(xpost - Mark OTM)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:19 (eighteen years ago)

I think you're being somewhat overanalytical there.
I simply want my voice to be heard - if everybody kept such opinions to themselves, nobody would be aware of them. I'd be more than happy to see more people agree or disagree with what's being discussed wrt ILX in general, rather than have everybody sit on their hands. Just because I choose to actually reveal my thoughts here doesn't mean I have these delusions of grandeur that you're describing.

Call it passive/aggressive not to name names if you like, I was just trying to be tactful. Calling out names right here would be counterproductive, IMO.

But yes, ok, I'll leave it at this. I didn't realise I was setting myself up as the Gallant St. Kit. For fear of overinflating my already vastly huge ego, I won't bother adding anything to ModReq discussions in future.

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 5 February 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

Mark OTM.

Simply ban serial offenders.

I doubt anyone would srsly consider an IP ban on someone like Jon (or Dom...altho...) even if it were feasible.

Calling out names right here would be counterproductive, IMO.

It would really help people understand your point better if you did cite examples.

DL seemed to get shit from all angles simply for daring to speak. I never understood that.

Did he ever actually get any personal abuse? His threads and comments were criticised (whether constructively or otherwise) and their flawed thinking highlighted, and he had his balls broken a few times as have many other people here, but surely nothing that bad (certainly NOTHING compared to, say, Geir).

vita susicivus (blueski), Monday, 5 February 2007 13:05 (eighteen years ago)

DL got into trouble because, subconsciously, people thought he was an actual dog. thats why he changed his name to wogan

you mean the internet?\

No, I mean the Noize Board. Don't try and be be clever, dude, it's not funny.

Louis pretty much dances around naked with a target painted on him.

Listen up fellas, I'd have much preferred it if I'd gotten on well from the start. Abuse wasn't part of the plan and I certainly didn't come looking for a fight (unlike certain others here). However, when things turned nasty, my personalised defence mechanism kicked in. This mechanism is essentially to parody, mock and subvert the abuse I receive, by joining in with it in an exaggerated, knowing self-dissection. I know it might seem as if I'm revelling in the attention, but hey, all I'm trying to do is rectify the previous errors I've made. I have a habit, unfortunately, of digging myself deeper, something I'm probably doing at this very moment, so ya know, it's kinda tough.

Also, the problem with this "EVERYBODY KNOWS WHO THE PERSISTENT OFFENDERS ARE!!!" logic is that everybody would probably have a different idea of who the "persistent offenders" are.

I mean, I'd be perfectly happy if JW, Dom and Marcello were all banned for persistent bullying - but by the same token there are just as many people who would see *me* as a "persistent offender" and ask to have me banned.

What software do I need to get on the Internet using my Amiga?

Amiga Internet software is constantly changing, adding new features and faster ways of accessing the net. The main software you will need to get on the net are:

1) A TCP/IP stack- A program that allows your Amiga to "talk to the internet". There are many fantastic utilities available, the AmiTCP demo is well featured and can be found on most magazine CDs and PD libraries. However, it is quite difficult to use, especially for the internet novice. Miami is by far the easiest to use, and is available from most PD libraries. Adverts for the full version can also be found in the current Amiga magazines.

2) E-mail software. E-Mail is the internet equivalent of posting a letter and having it delivered almost instantaneously. The best E-mail program available is known as YAM. The good news is that it is FREE and can be obtained from a PD library or magazine CDs.

3) Newsreaders. To access another area of the internet known as Usenet you will require a newsreader. Unfortunately, I cannot think of a perfect Amiga newsreader. One of the only commercial offerings is "New York" from Finale Developments. This costs $35.

4) A good Amiga Internet provider. Whilst it is easy to go with any internet service provider, you should find one that actually knows what an Amiga is and can help you with any problems that you may have. At the moment many Amiga users recommend Demon Internet.

5) Web Browser- If you want to surf the net you will need a web browser. The Amiga hosts three main browsers that are regularly updated. These are Voyager, iBrowse, and AWeb. The first two rely on the graphical interface MUI to run and require a 020+ fast ram at minimum to run at a decent speed. There is also a port of Netscape Navigator in the works. The first beta demo of this should be available around Christmas 1998.

6) FTP Client- An FTP client allows faster downloads from a number of FTP sites, including Aminet. The most popular tool for the job is AmiFTP and Directory Opus 5.5.

7) IRC Client- Access real-time chat groups with your Amiga. AmiIRC seems to be the leader in this market.
