Why has my post been deleted (without discussion, apparently)?

Excuse me, but I made a post on this thread:

Your advice please ilxors

I made a direct quote of a published pop song, in response to a question to which it was relevant. I was never aware that posting song lyrics in reply to questions is disallowed, there are many examples on this board.

And now I find that all discussion of said moderation activity has been deleted, without offering me either explanation, discourse or defense.

Why was this post deleted and why was the discussion of its deletion then deleted?

I really would like an explanation of that, please.

Someone posted that it was written about them I think?

Carly Simon?

I had nothing to do with the deletion, but weren't the lyrics posted simply to stir up trouble?

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, yes, they were. And she reposted them.

The post was deleted at the subject's request, which is that person's perogative as per the fact. If the song is, indeed, about the person in question (and there doesn't seem to be much argument about it from any party so far), then that falls squarely within the realm of our moderation duties. The request on here was removed because, as someone else pointed out, it basically identified the person all over again, which defeated the purpose of the request in the first place. I suppose next time I will just blank out the identifying information instead and leave it a tantalizing mystery.

If we have a right to request posts be deleted "because they are stirring up trouble" then can I please request that every single Jon Williams post be deleted?

A question was asked, bringing up issues about the fickle nature of bisexuality, I responded with song lyrics about the fickle nature of bisexuality. They were nothing more than a facetious response to an anonymous question, of the type that many, many ILXers are guilty of. These are lyrics which have been published, released, and played on North American radio. Quoting them is well within fair use.

*Someone* decided that these lyrics were intended for them. (I"m guessing the same person that was asserting USING MY NAME on "This is the thread where..." that I had written lyrics about her.) Until she raised this little stink about a passing post, there wasn't a shred of evidence on ILX linking her with the lyrics - EXCEPT THAT WHICH SHE POSTED HERSELF.

This was not a big deal until she made it into one. If my posts can be deleted because they mention a common name which happens to be shared by an ILXer, than can I please request the deletion of posts which mention me, very specifically by name?

Kate, grow up; stop listening to shitty music; get a real internet connection; stop being such a fucking lame little crybaby twit.

Seconded.

Yes, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:55 (twenty years ago) link

The issue was that the song was apparently about this other poster. If you are denying that that's the case, then okay, possibly I erred in removing that particular post and I apologize to you for removing them without discussion.

I'm not very clear here about what you're claiming; on the thread you mention that the offended party was bragging about the song being about them, while here you're claiming that it's a common name and anyhow it's fair use because it's been on the radio. If the song is, indeed, about the person in question, certainly you understand why continuing to poke this sore spot is a bad idea? Again, assuming it is about that person?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:56 (twenty years ago) link

Yea, she hasn't said that it *isn't* about them.

MCLUSKYSUX (ex machina), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:59 (twenty years ago) link

Whatever the case is, I don't have the time to deal with it right now, as I have to do some real work for the next little while. For the time being the link will stand. If another moderator wants to deal with this, by all means.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:00 (twenty years ago) link

I repeat, the only person who has EVER stated explicitly on ILX that any of my songs is specifically about them, is the person who made the request for the deletion. This person is obsessed with me, as the post below shows.

Since my post has been deleted for being "personal", I feel that I am well within my rights in asking for this post to be deleted:

It mentions me very specifically by name, makes untenable personal allegations about me, and therefore meets every criteria for deletion:

[link removed to make it all nice and anonymous again]

I want this post, or at least the paragraph making personal allegations about me deleted. If my posts are deleted, let hers be deleted for the same reason.

He wants to be me (kate), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:08 (twenty years ago) link

Okay, I lied, I'm not working yet. I've removed the comment from the post specified, and remove the link above to make it nice and anonymous again. Can we let this drop now? [ps that means Jon, you can be quiet for a bit too. thanks.]

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago) link

[ok, but SOMEONE has been harping on every little fucking thing i do (PS - I HAVEN'T IMAGE FLOODED LATELY)]
If we have a right to request posts be deleted "because they are stirring up trouble" then can I please request that every single Jon Williams post be deleted?

Um... touche. No?

I mean this is obviously hyperbole, but she kinda has a point.

those lyrics are straight out of a NOFX tribute band's one attempt at an original composition.

Do you like my new screen name, huh?

Just kidding!

I'm actually kind of glad that you left the rest of that post entact. Because, you know, for someone who is trying to stay "anonymous", directly linking to a blog so that a post from ILX that shows their "new identity" shows up in their referrals log is a pretty self defeating thing to do. Just sayin', you know...

$u$an Is A Lesbian Now (kate), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 07:09 (twenty years ago) link

wait, how does the identity of a poster translate into a referrals log? my referrals log, just says ilx if its from here.

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 07:40 (twenty years ago) link

My referrals logs (for work at least) tell me the exact page that the user linked from. I don't know if blogs use the same exact software, but our tracking tools are pretty damn accurate.

My New Identity (kate), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 07:47 (twenty years ago) link

oh, i get the exact page too, but, what i mean is, how does that reveal which poster it was, who clicked on the link?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 09:04 (twenty years ago) link

Because it's the only post on the page with the link, and it says very specifically in the post - WITH NAME INCLUDED - "oh, this blog is all about me, me, meeee!"

Is that not perhaps a clue that the "Sam" who posted the link and the "$us@n" that the blog is about are one and the same?

I'm sorry to keep on about this, but the level of hypocrisy involved is quite astonishing.

It's just a bit rich to complain, and have deleted, a lyric which just happens to contain the name of one of her multiple identities, which she herself quite merrily outs herself on another thread.

In all seriousness, if she really is as "proud" of being the alleged subject of the song as she said that she was, then, honestly, one would have thought she would not have a problem with it being quoted.
