ILX Identity Theft

There's been a recent outbreak of posts bearing my name (and e-mail address) that were not genuine. I thought there were safeguards in place to prevent that sort've misrepresentation. What's going on?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 October 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Could you point to a couple of them? I will take a boo.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It was just a joke, Alex. You know, like your 50 taking sides threads.

AaronHz (deangulberry), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

First of all, dean: quit acting like a dick.

Second, Alex, if you don't already have this set up, go to your settings page (bottom of every thread), and click on the "show message details" option that says "username/info page link". That way at least you'll know who's spoofing you, if they're logged in. Also make sure your account is set to "NO" near the top of the settings page where it says "allow messages to be posted with my name or email address without my password."

If this is already set to "no", maybe someone with behind-the-scenes access can figure out why dean is able to post as other people, apparently.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 24 October 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Sean, I'll check that out.

Aaron...yeah, I know it was a joke, but it's not a funny one. I have no problems with people "taking the piss", so to speak, but not in this way. Call me anal (and much worse), but I can't abide by this.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 24 October 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, that "Aaron" up there is the same guy that's been thefting yr identity. Showing message details is urgent & key.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 25 October 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

THEFT

AaronHz (deangulberry), Monday, 25 October 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

in your settings, if you have "Allow messages to be posted with my name or email address without my password": NO (which I think is the default), and someone is still able to spoof you, then please let the mods/developers know.

beware that even with the NO settings it is easy for someone to add any number of insignificant variations to a name/address that ppl may not notice

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Monday, 25 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

n your settings, if you have "Allow messages to be posted with my name or email address without my password": NO (which I think is the default), and someone is still able to spoof you, then please let the mods/developers know.

I checked. It did already say "NO".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

We were using variations at first, but later the names were identical.

identity theftor (deangulberry), Monday, 25 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, really....just knock it off, okay?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 October 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

;..(

identity theftor (deangulberry), Monday, 25 October 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

in your settings, if you have "Allow messages to be posted with my name or email address without my password": NO (which I think is the default), and someone is still able to spoof you, then please let the mods/developers know.

i have "NO" as my setting as well, and yet dean was still able to post using a username and email address identical to mine. i hope he can assume some personal responsibility and knock it off, but i still would like to see the coders/administrators look into this situation because it could pose a bigger problem in the future (not from dean probably, but from someone more meanspirited).

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 25 October 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

it was just a ribbing, like you guys being jerks most of the time. but yes, ams has a point here.

identity theftor (deangulberry), Monday, 25 October 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

amateur!!!st otm.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

amateurist is otm. without protection against this kind of identity theft, there will come a time in the future where someone could be posting ancient, witless barbs and Killing Joke references without Alex in NYC's permission.

identity theftor (deangulberry), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Laugh it up all you like, but having been the victim of identity theft before outside of ILX, I can assure you -- it's not funny. Do what you must to make fun of me/take the piss/wind me up, ....make all the idiotic Killing Joke comments you like -- but seriously don't mess with the identity stuff. Please.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Could you point to a couple of them? I will take a boo.

Please and thank you.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 25 October 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally, if this sort of thing persists I'd be inclined to regard it very seriously, and start considering again making this registered posters only, and then identity theft would be a very serious offence, leading to banning people. I'm not talking about jokey pisstaking by posting as an obviously fake version of someone else's name, but genuinely trying to pass as someone else is a very different matter.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 25 October 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"ancient, witless barbs" makes me sound kind of goth!

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 25 October 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Alex: Any recent messages bearing the name "AaronHz" are Dean, not me.
I've been "A Million Talking Hot Dogs" for the past week or so and as of now have changed it again.

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Monday, 25 October 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't care, honestly, who is doing it. I just want it to stop. You don't like the threads i start (despite the fact that they are, for the most part, entirely legitimate and not meant as a "joke"), fine -- say so. Call me an asshole, but misrepresentation is simply not cool.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll admit that while I thought it was funny on those two noise threads where it started, I don't like the idea of people using my name on threads I might not even know about and would like it to stop.

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Monday, 25 October 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

but then how would i have fun? it's not like i have a life outside these boards.

x-post

dean pissyoldlady, Monday, 25 October 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

OH NO MY IDENTITY IS THEFTED NOW TOO

CALL THE POLICE

identity theftor (deangulberry), Monday, 25 October 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

(I also have "no" checked under settings, so WTF. I don't even get the point of you posting under my name out of the context of those two noise threads. It's juvenile.)

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Monday, 25 October 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't you mean to post some porn Aaron? ;..( You have changed.

identity theftor (deangulberry), Monday, 25 October 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

And to whoever stole 98% of my identity upthread, shame on you. Juvenile!

identity theftor (deangulberry), Monday, 25 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I did that exactly ONCE, on the noise board (as a joke, to use your excuse for asshattery) knowing it would be modded etc. And I'm quite far from the only person on there who has done that. I have not and would never do that on the main boards.

From a Land of Grass Without Mirrors (AaronHz), Monday, 25 October 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"from stonehenge to the siberian tundra, their ancient, witless barbs resound in thunderous bursts: the magick of the cross, the spell of the drum"

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 25 October 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

actually...

moderators, now i can't log in at all using my password! what's happening?!?!?

amateur-st, Monday, 25 October 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

hey "JAUNTY ALAN" this is the Admin Request Forum, not the piss off other users and generally piss about.

identity theftor (deangulberry), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, you're days late to the party.

identity theftor (deangulberry), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yea, does he even post?

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

not much, but he does spend a lot of time (unpaid, naturally) resolving people's board-related problems, so perhaps you could express a bit of gratitude.

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

or at least curtail the sneering condescension.

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

you first!

identity theftor (deangulberry), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

touché.

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, don't. it's more fun that way. foils, etc etc.

identity theftor (deangulberry), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

AMATEURIST HOW DO I MAKE ACCENT MARKS FAST

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

staple your tongue to the roof of your mouth

amateur!!st, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

and unfortunately i can't code for removing tedious low-level nastiness and general dickish unpleasant behaviour. if anyone has any code to hand that would get rid of this problem, and make ILX a more courteous place, then send it my way.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 28 October 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
How dare someone be funny in a way someone else finds unfunny!

hstеncil, Saturday, 6 August 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

I really can't abide this.

Alex in NYC (slutsky), Sunday, 7 August 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

Sigh, we've discussed this before. Lock thread, please use search function.

Ned Raggett (ex machina), Sunday, 7 August 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

go to club bang with me pls

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (eman), Sunday, 7 August 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

um that isn't me either. would really appreciate mods taking care of this.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

but it was such a convincing imitation!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

I had to open this thread a few times before I saw that that one was a fake too.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

This even with the culinary confession of the email address.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Wait, Ned is the JW?!!?

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

ok so if no mods want to take care of this, i'm left wondering why? i've had someone do this on other boards (most recently on ilm - teeny took care of it), and i find it really frustrating/irritating that no mods apparently are taking it seriously now. come on, these posts as "me" were made two days ago. i think it's more than fair for me to be wondering why they're still up? and why no one's reported the ip or banned the user?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 8 August 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

are you talking about this:

How dare someone be funny in a way someone else finds unfunny!

-- hst?ncil (...), August 6th, 2005 3:52 PM. (later)

or something else?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 August 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

yes, that.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 8 August 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

it's pretty obviously not you (i@eat.boogers?)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 August 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

no shit. but since i've had a weird stalker guy show up on ilm and ilb threads for like 2 years now, i would like to know whether this is that dude, and if it is or even if it isn't (and is a more regular poster) for some action to be taken. i don't think that's unreasonable even if the posts were "obviously not" me, slocki.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 8 August 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

i didn't know you were being stalked!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 8 August 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

I think that the context of this thread (ie, regulars spoof each other to point out ways the site can be exploited to the coders) made mods take this incursion less seriously than spoofs of you in other contexts, stence.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 August 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Wait, Dan Perry is RJG ?!?

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Which is helpful, since I never knew who RJG was.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

what, on earth, do you mean?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 August 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Nothing, I'm just confused.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

it seems like it

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 August 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Poor Marissa has gone off her nut because of people like you!

Kevins (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Calm down, stencil. That was me, above. I thought it was funny and harmless. I am not this other person you speak of.

And yeah, since I explicitly explain that name-spoofing exploit, it might be nice if some Code God would now please fix it. Before the Masses get ahold of the information.

Marissa M., Monday, 8 August 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

If not I Love Mucus.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

dan, if i was able to see the username (like jon's spoofing a few posts above), i wouldn't mind. being spoofed or whatever by a non-logged-in person is a lot more creeepy tho (even if they posted later "that was me, above" - that's real helpful, douche!).

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

To hstencil's point, there should be no reason to post to this board without a log-in.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm not a mod anymore so I couldn't do anything about it regardless! I was just speculating.

To hstencil's point, there should be no reason to post to this board without a log-in.

Agreed. I think.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

oh i know, i was just saying. in case it's not clear, i think they "HEY IT'S ME EXCEPT I WON'T SAY WHO I AM" person is the douche, not you, dan.

http://www.sportbikes.ws/showthread.php?t=31156

M. V. (M.V.), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

To hstencil's point, there should be no reason to post to this board without a log-in.

Except to complain that someone is HOTLINKING YOUR COPYWRITED IMAGES ON ILE AND YOU ARE GOING TO SUE ILX.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

this would also prevent people who get locked out of their accounts from complaining about it*

*probably a good thing

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah, maybe they'd have the nerve to read the FAQ instead.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

way to go, moderators.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)
