London bombings thread

As mentioned on the Explosion at Liverpool Street - Thread Two (News Updates Go Here) thread

I was wondering if there shouldn't be a separate thread just solely for messages of goodwill and support for Liz and Rob. Leave this thread for people to make arrangements to contact each other, link
to news updates etc, but maybe copy all the messages of support onto a separate thread for if Rob and, God willing, Liz want evidence of how much we are all rooting for them at this horrible time. May be a silly idea, diluting stuff onto other threads, but it would remove the thing that Forest Pines and others have mentioned of opening this thread with "nothing" to add. Messages of support are not nothing, but maybe it would be a good idea, maybe not, to have somewhere separate to put them.

I've copied this here so that if people disagree they can do so here rather than clog up the thread any further

This is a good idea. That thread is getting to the point where it takes forever to get to the bottom on Dial-up connection. And when you're looking for news it can be kind of an anxious wait.

(Hari, under settings, set it to "show only the last 50 answers", and it will improve your ILXing.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 11 July 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

Ah! Thanks for that one. Now i can finally read that M.I.A thread again.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

Pash says re the London explosions thread.

Does this thing show up on google searches? Vaguely paranoid about tabloid journalists expoiting this.

As I understand it the people close to Liz are trying to avoid the media and we've been in situations where tabloid types have quoted ILX before. This has worried me too.

Does anyone (suzy?) know of any legal disclaimers we can put at the top of threads stressing that the opinions are copyright and private to the individuals concerned, and would these disclaimers stand up at all?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that's kind of a good idea. If the media found this board and that thread i have no doubt they would exploit it. No doubt at all.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

To be fair Hari I don't actually remember seeing in similar situations any "X's friend said on their blog" style quotes. But you're right that it's not beyond them.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

I just tried googling Liz's full and abbreviated names. No links to here.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

I'll repeat my concern, which is that aside from what good this will actually do, it won't work. The wishes follow the news stories, and trying to get people to put them on another thread doesn't seem workable to me.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

I also de-indexed the thread, too. Just in case.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

That's fine Andrew, I totally understand. I hadn't really thought it through, which was why I threw it out as an idea and looked for people's opinions.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, sorry, I missed that this thread was a couple of days old.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

I've put Ailsa's suggestion into action for two reasons:

i) The high level of news and new developments in the investigation of the attacks.

ii) Even with settings adjusted the thread was becoming slow to load, and now the focus of news has shifted onto the criminal investigation rather than recovery efforts I felt separating the two subjects of the thread was the right thing to do, and Marianna's post giving such news as we're likely to have the appropriate time to do it.

Again, my sincere apologies to anyone who feels this is a misjudgement.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

i think, sadly, that this is a good decision tom.

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

im a bit worried abt marcello's presence on these threads...

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

Let London look after Marcello, Amst. He is our friend, after all.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

that's good advice, suzy :)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 06:42 (twenty years ago)

I've de-indexed the Liz thread.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

I wanted to post this here rather than on the thread directly, but is it inappropriate to post pictures on Liz's thread?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

This is only my personal opinion, I've no idea what other people think. I don't think it's inappropriate at all - but just probably a bit too soon. Every time I see photos - in the Guardian, on the web - I just start crying.

But really it's your call, and I'm not going to tell you to do something if it would make you (or others) feel better.

MIS Information (kate), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

I agree, post pictures when we know.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

No it's fair enough, if even 1 person objected i wouldn't do it. The only reason I thought it was because I am taking massive comfort from a picture I have & thought others might. No need for more discussion, I wont do it.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

maybe the thread title should be temporarily googleproofed too, so that google doesn't just point to the index page instead of the threadpage itself?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

good idea, I've done it.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Googling Liz +surname gets you first to Freaky Trigger. Which gets you to the thread on ILX.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Tom has changed the Freaky Trigger page so that it just says "Liz D" -- but Google doesn't know that just yet.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

does it seem odd that the admin log page is google-able?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 16 July 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

that should be robots.txt -ed i think
