I fucked up my password somehow. And since my email address in my profile has a despamming herring in it, I can't send myself a new password.

Can someone reset it somehow? (Or fix my email address in my profile..?)

Thanks!

Actually, I don't if this was from a recent code change, but after reregistering twice and fucking up those passwords too, the mods may want to issue an admin fatwa that changing your email address will automatically cause a new password to be generated, so you better be goddamned sure you have a valid email address in there if you go changing it. I can forsee this problem coming up again. With some frequency.

Or, I don't know, maybe everyone else already knew that.

I think the unofficial admin response to this issue is "go eat a bag of dicks".

NOTE: Changing your email address(es) will cause your password to be reset and mailed to the new address (or private address if specified). Don't fuck this up!

aw darn, it didn't do the little input boxes. Anyway, I don't know how much more clear we can make it than the above!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

your best recourse is to make yourself a new account with a new email address.

haha great new username

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

Tip: if your username has multiple words, you can make a new one by putting extra spaces in. They'll make your login name different as far as the code is concerned, but they won't show up on screen.

haha what a dick!!

Who, me?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 30 July 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

or me?

ForestPines (eman), Saturday, 30 July 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

See, if you take *all* the spaces out it's obvious.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 30 July 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

!

Forest Pines (Chris Piuma), Saturday, 30 July 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

That's brilliant!

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 30 July 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Can we test this with someone else's username now, please? ;-)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 31 July 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

And, now that I've let everyone else in on this, maybe someone should consider a patch so that spaces in login names, at least, are rendered to the browser as  . Otherwise it's an obvious way to masquerade as somebody else.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 31 July 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

does this work?

Leon C. (slutsky), Sunday, 31 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

there ya go.

Ned Raggett (slutsky), Sunday, 31 July 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. This seems like something that needs to be fixed.

shine headlights on me (Dan Perry), Sunday, 31 July 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

I agree with, er, Dan Perry.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (ailsa), Sunday, 31 July 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

I shouldn't have said anything - fixing this for the Full Name field will probably break my account, because I cocked up when trying to register it.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 31 July 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Bloody fucking hell I thought this was fixed years ago. Or maybe it was just fixed for those not logged in and the settings page needs a trim as well.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Sunday, 31 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

I got an email today from ILX, because someone tried to register a varient of my username. But put my email address in. Duh.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 1 August 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it was an alternate you!

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Monday, 1 August 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

You tried to steal your own identity.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Monday, 1 August 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

there's a way to perform identity theft on people whose usernames don't have spaces too.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 1 August 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Can a moderator please change the title of this thread to "Miss Hoover ...." ? It's really starting to bug me that I used the wrong name.

Or do I need to start a new thread to request that?

Draw Tipsy, ya hack. (dave225.3), Monday, 1 August 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

Yes, ken, I noticed.
