Thanks, and I apologise for thinking that ILE could actually have a serious meta-thread any more.

Hello, Teeny, there's more crap all over the thread. Is there any way to temporarily lock him out of it?

Streatham's Paisley Princess (kate), Thursday, 10 November 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Hello, mods, are you going to do something about this, or aren't you?

Streatham's Paisley Princess (kate), Thursday, 10 November 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

I don't want to start getting involved or take sides, but is all this crapflooding and subsequent modding causing all the poxy fule meltdowns? Cos if so, it's getting a bit annoying... I'm trying to not do any work here, folks.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Thursday, 10 November 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

there's some weirdness with the text displayed for being banned from a thread

by coincidence i noticed this literally two days ago, fixed the code, and didn't commit it because i want to go over the permissions code anyway. and the log listing is a bit half-arsed - i cobbled that together quickly cos it was something that was bugging ppl that it wasn't getting logged at all. it's not really good enough though is it?

There is also only 4 minutes between thread start and the second request for mods to do something...that seems kind of odd, Kate, especially considering it isn't a situation where someone posted your phone # or your real name or something like that where it could very well be a time sensitive situation.

i updated the logging of locking to work better. unfortunately the "lockee" was being logged and not the "locker", so i've made me the locker of those permissions in the log now.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_scripting

Type 2

This type of XSS vulnerability is also referred to as a stored or persistent or second-order vulnerability, and it allows the most powerful kinds of attacks. A type 2 XSS vulnerability exists when data provided to an web application by a user is first stored persistently on the server (in a database, filesystem, or other location), and later displayed to users in a web page without being HTML quoted. A classic example of this is with online message boards, where users are allowed to post HTML formatted messages for other users to read. These vulnerabilities are usually more significant than other types because an attacker can inject script just once, and could potentially hit a large number of other users with little need for social engineering. The methods of injection can vary a great deal, and an attacker may not need to use the web application itself to exploit such a hole. Any data received by the web application (via email, system logs, etc) that can be controlled by an attacker must be quoted prior to re-display in a dynamic page, else a XSS vulnerability of this type could result.

But it's also possible to let Canadians use your ILX admin login and then play dumb about it.

amon (eman), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

i am aware of XSS and of the vulnerabilities that allow for injecting script into SQL commands (which reminds me of something on another site...).

i'll look for a security hole that might allow someone to have another admins privs to the point where they can give out higher privs, but i'm not going to break my back over it. it seems... unlikely.

you know once upon a time i remember trying to persuade graham to make the site entirely open - just publish the code! - and i naively imagined that ppl would send in fixes and optimisations and all manner of crap. grim experience has shown otherwise.

meanwhile, you know, apart from the shit-spraying CSS images everywhere, noise is... well quiet. who on noise cares that this weird mod priv thing has happened?

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

it seems... unlikely.

yeah, we get it already. sheesh. second possibility much more... likely.

noise is... well quiet.

Noise was locked "until we get our board back", I assume by Jon - he can remove the lock anyway, if he hasn't already.
