Things will NEVER be the same (and they actually WEREN'T!)

A shorter thread, I suspect.

World-shaking events which actually made lasting changes to a status quo - of a character, a universe, whatever?

Let's say - four or more years old, that's about 50 issues isn't it?

Again this is mostly relevant to the Big Two, probably.

Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Things weren't exactly different, but they weren't the same.

Eh?

Yes, Crisis, at least for another few months.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

The Apocalypse War! Mega-City 1 was all fucked up for at least a few years.

chap who would dare to thwart the revolution (chap), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

OMG TRIPOD I REMEMBER THAT!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

The death of Barry Allen.

Emerald Twilight?. That reboot lasted for about ten years, so I would say it counts.

Aquaman has his hand chewed by piranhas!.

Superman marries Lois Lane.

Can't really think of anything by Marvel...

Amadeo (Amadeo G.), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

How long was Jean Gray dead for?

chap who would dare to thwart the revolution (chap), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I don't think long-term changes which have now been reversed count (well not in my hardline brain)

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Norman Osborne did stay dead for at least 20 years, though. That's pretty impressive. Jean was dead for about 5, I think.

Dick Grayson and Wally West are probably DC's strongest examples.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

Every Cerebus storyline made lasting changes. Except for the ones where he sits around getting pissed.

Until maybe last month (and that might well be a double bluff) the bullet thru Babra Gordon's spine would also be a pretty good things will never be the same again. Though it came out fo completely different motivations.

Joker: Still Crazy After All These Years.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Why was Alan Moore allowed to cripple Batgirl in a graphic novel? I mean, it's a great story, and a great change to the character, I'm just surprised that DC agreed.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Because Alan Moore=$.

chap who would dare to thwart the revolution (chap), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

It wasn't THAT great of a story. And it was kind of a "Hey, look at this mess I've made! Well, so long!"
Luckily John Ostrander got ahold of the character, who otherwise would have probably drifted into total obscurity.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Hey, yeah! Oracle was first used in Suicide Squad, wasn't she? I totally forgot!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

It's a good thing they did that, cos Oracle is a massively helpful character to have around in terms of plot device.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

You think they let her in the JLA because she could sing?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

This issue - A CHIEF JUDGE DIES!! But then there'll be another along in a minute. When Hershey bites it, that'll be a slightly more significant change as it'll be THIS ISSUE ONE OF JUDGE DREDD'S MATES IS SHOT PROBABLY BY HIM again.

Batman: Officer Down!
Will Jim Gordon ever return to wonder wearily how Batman so silently slips out his office window?

I believe I've found a fix!
