Not-so-idle question for the regulars here: for the last few weeks I've been trying to win the cover connections contest that Steven Grant runs in his Permanent Damage column at Comic Book Resources. The reward for winning, apart from bragging rights and one's name in the column, is that Grant runs a mention/advert for a website of one's choice. Is it cool if, assuming I can win one of these things, I have him mention ILC? Or are y'all happier to have this remain the secret clubhouse for ILX0rs who love comics to hang out in? I doubt much would come of it anyway, but I don't want to destroy ILC by accident in doing a shout out. Thoughts?

I've told some old comic fan friends about this place. I wouldn't be terribly keen on ads in Comics International as I'd fear being overrun with people who don't have anything much to say beyond the coolness of Wolverine, but this isn't some sort of secret.

I love the idea of people wondering whether a publicly accessible website findable by google should be kept secret or not.

Well, there's a difference between being Googleable and being linked directly to and advertised for, which, as far as I can tell, is only being done off the main page of Freaky Trigger and nowhere else. So I thought I'd ask first, rather than run the risk of changing the character of the board without everybody's consent. Since I haven't seen any nays, I'll go for it. I think I might have won this week's contest, but since Grant's internet connection is currently very dicey, I haven't heard back from him yet. More as the situation develops.

Plenty of people link to ILX boards from their sites etc., there's no law against it! No reason for ILC to be any different, we have enough of a 'culture' by now to absorb new people quite easily I think.

I'm pretty sure the connection this week was that every issue contained at least one story by a writer who was also a novelist. One of the comics has a story written by Alfred Bester, the Heavy Metal has stuff by Michael Moorcock and Norman Spinrad, there's a comic with a text feature by Mickey Spillaine, Steve Englehart and Denny O'Neil turned out to have written novels, etc. (the GCD was a big help this week). Still haven't heard back, though...

More Cover Challenge madness. As usual, one I thought was tough was answered almost instantly. This week's winner is Christopher Freiberg who correctly "guessed" the theme was comics written by writers who were also novelists: Alfred Bester in CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES, Denny O'Neil in CHARLTON PREMIERE (in addition to his DC novels, Denny also wrote a paperback original, THE BITE OF MONSTERS, which I've still got around here somewhere), Mickey Spillane in DICK COLE, Michael Moorcock in HEAVY METAL (Christopher points out Norman Spinrad was published in that issue, too, which I'd completely missed), Steve Englehart (his novel was THE POINT MAN in COYOTE, science fiction novelist Edmond Hamilton in THE BLACK TERROR and Max Allan Collins in MS. TREE. I swear, it's like he had my room bugged. But then, in the midst of ISP problems (since solved) and my computer crisis, I never notified him that he had won. Christopher, you won! Let me know what you want to pimp.

Good things about ILC (for real):

- it doesn't take comics that seriously but it does like them.
- no icons and sigfiles!
- we like Grant Morrison but we don't actually want to be him
- ditto Ellis, Bendis, Millar
- your gateway to a world of ILX pain
- the occasional bit of great insight
- we honestly WOULD like some threads that aren't about Marvel, DC, 2000AD etc. Honest!

I am now. Thanks for the response-- the efforts so far have been highly amusing, if not altogether successful. I don't think that "We're about the other end of the spectrum from the Engine" is apt enough of a description on its own as it might give the impression that we're more "mainstream" than we really are, while "We think Tintin is better than Watchmen" is probably just as applicable to the snootier and more envious denizens of the Comics Journal's board. I'm tempted to go with "Comics Are Rubbish But We Love Them Anyway" just because it amuses me, but maybe we'd be better served by a straighter/copy-ready one or two sentence boil down of the points on Tom and aldo's summaries, leaving out in-jokes and warning about ILX addiction? If no one else steps up to the task, I'll try to pound something out for vetting here tomorrow.

Who said he was famous, and why should it matter? He's a working professional-- it's not like they were going to get Alan Moore to write for them every week. (Ellis actually used to be the other columnist at CBR, before he went off to concentrate on his own interweb stuff.) I actually like Grant much better as a columnist than as a comic book writer (Badlands, his other big claim to fame, wasn't really my cup of tea) and I don't think that I'm the only one out there who feels that way.

I think Grant is a terrific columnist, and quite instructive on the nuts and bolts of making comics much like someone who finds maths hard is a better maths teacher. That said, I mainly read it for the political stuff which is even better.

Chris I remember when ILX was going to be featured in the Guardian (national UK newspaper) for the first time and there was enormous paranoia and feelings we shd be on our best/worst behaviour (views varied) and great anticipation and then we got absolutely nobody new from it.
