I think we should first of all have a poll as to whether we want to do a poll.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

I'll do it.

See you in 2008!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

The pre-poll poll, that is.

Suckas.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

I'm all for more polls, especially if they're run in a timely manner.

And I should know.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Did we do a nominations process before? I'd opt for an open ballot thingy.

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

Given that Chuck T. expressed interest in running the dingdonging thing, I'm all for him leading the charge (unless he wants to pass the buck, which is also OK).

Of note: TOP 10 (or whatever) comix of 2005

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

YOU HAVE ABSOLUTE WATCHMEN?

Dude, can I come over to your house after school?

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

"I SWEAR on my ABSOLUTE WATCHMEN that the 2004 poll WILL BE DONE BY THE END OF THE YEAR."

I am such a putz.

Tep, the door to my rumpus room is always open (assuming you bring Twizzlers and/or Sour Patch Kids). (And Mountain Dew.) Please note: AW is kinda disappointing.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

But the IDEA is still so cool. I wasn't going to call you on that swearing-by. Done is done.

I think AW calls for SURGE. Or Jolt.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, don't mind my post-poll woe-is-me-and-my-task-commitment inertia.

Either Surge or Jolt works! You can also help me re-org my collection - tonight / for the forseeable future, I'm torn between doing that & trying to break up my writing block.

Invitation's open to all, BTW. Bring Your Own Scotch Tape, tho. If anyone could bring a set of false teeth as well, that'd be a nice bonus.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

What the? Is Grampa Simpson babysitting us?

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

I forget from the last discussion: would an issued-in-2005 reprint (esp one of significantly different presentation) be nominatable, or was Bone a special exception, or do we not worry and see what happens? I'm pretty much asking because of Showcase Superman, which I think was my "favorite comic" of last year (but the parenthetical describes Absolute Watchmen).

Also:

Seven Soldiers: the whole enchilada, or the ingredients individually?

Tell me about Solo.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 16 February 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

I think you should do it. I don't think I bought any new comics in 2005, and I want to know what was good.

chap who would dare to be slightly tipsy on the internet (chap), Thursday, 16 February 2006 01:21 (nineteen years ago)

If memory serves, the rules simply were "whatever was released in 2004, period." Which was how Bone made it.

As for So7diers, someone who's actually kept up with it would have to tell me if there's a decent chance that, if we treat each mini individually, they might run the entire poll.

I think support for a poll is pretty unanimous, so I'ma change the thread title to a nomination, OK Huk?

c(''c) (Leee), Thursday, 16 February 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

Ah scratch that last bit, whoever wants to coordinate this thing, start a new thread.

c(''c) (Leee), Thursday, 16 February 2006 03:46 (nineteen years ago)

What do you mean "Tell me about Solo"?
I think we may have had a rule about mini-series for the 2004 thing that only minis that had concluded in the calendar year were eligible, trans-annual ltd. series had to wait for next year (though I voted for The Question anyway, for all the good it did).

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 16 February 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

Tep means he wants us to say "we should vote for Solo per issue, rather than as a series," and such.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 16 February 2006 04:53 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, cuz the only thing to really say about Solo is, in the wds of Kirby: DON'T ASK! JUST BUY IT!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 16 February 2006 05:01 (nineteen years ago)

But more people should buy the Allred or Cooke issues than the Chaykin.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 16 February 2006 07:32 (nineteen years ago)

If it's a yes/no vote, it will do better as a whole. If it's points-distribution, then I'll definitely give less points to something with Chaykin involved than either the Cooke or Allred issues individually.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 16 February 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

I was kind of wondering all those things -- haven't read any of it yet, so other than the Allred, wasn't sure which issues were the can't-miss ones.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 16 February 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

The odd-numbered issues tend to be the most fun ones (Paul Pope, D. Cooke, M. Allred), though I think there's a glitch in that with the latest odd-numbered issue.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 16 February 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

Issue 3 of We3 came out in 2005, I think. BUT IT WAS ALREADY IN THE '04 POLL! GOD! I'm not at home, so I can't check the actual issue, but I think it's '05 (and would prolly be my #1 of the year). What say you to this?

sa heck, Thursday, 16 February 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

If it were nominated, I'd vote for it again, but I don't think it should be nominated. If it hadn't placed in the 04, or had placed low, it'd be one thing -- there could be a logical argument that people were a) waiting until it was done to vote for it or b) waiting for it to be collected to read it.

Even if there was board-wise consensus that #3 was the best comic to come out in 2005, I'm not sure a 25 person poll needs to be committed enough to accurate representation for that to matter.

(... but I'd vote for it. I liked it that much. I'm just not gonna nominate it.)

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 16 February 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

I would nominate Captain America, but did that start in 05 or 04? i started reading it last year, but it may have started at the very end of 04.

also: FELL!!!!

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 16 February 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

Has Fell gotten really good after its third of fourth issue? I stopped around then.

c(''c) (Leee), Thursday, 16 February 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

It was good to start w/, FOO.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 16 February 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

Right! I'll get to work then.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 16 February 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

Pretty soon.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 16 February 2006 22:53 (nineteen years ago)

We3 collection came out in 2005, lots of people might have read it for the first time then (I borrowed a friend's issues and then bought the trade, so almost.)

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 16 February 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps I might suggest, in my first, and hopefully not last, unilateral act of poll-running fascism, that people try not to vote for any mini-series that came in the top 13 of Daver's SHAME 2004 poll, so we can avoid any embarassing Annie Lennox/Brit Awards-style repetition.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 16 February 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

and i think fell has only had... 3 issues so far? or have i missed recent issues? the last one i can find in my room is #3 anyway...

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 16 February 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

christ, i wonder if my local store just stopped carrying it! i seem to have missed issues 4-6.. damn.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 16 February 2006 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

Fell's only up to #3, according to what I've found.

I'm all for keeping 2K4 poll placers off the 2K5 ballot, and for allowing any significant collections of previously published works to be eligible for votes - folks cast votes for Complete Peanuts and Samurai Executioner last time around.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 February 2006 03:59 (nineteen years ago)

yeah but that means We3 CAN get in!

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 17 February 2006 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

SAmurai Executioner was surely brand new in English, wasn't it?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 February 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

Well, yeah, but technically it was "previously published".

And the way I see if: you can get in the poll if you were collected in 2K5 but NOT a top-vote getter in the 2K4 poll.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 February 2006 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

And now how about Seven Soldjahs? Vote as the megaseries or as the individual miniserieseses?

sa heck, Friday, 17 February 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

I reckon either / or, though (given it's unfinished) I imagine more folks would vote for Klarion or Manhattan Guardian than the thing as a whole.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 February 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's gotta be the individual ones, unless people really think that would mean a tally with nothing but SS (it seems more likely to me it would split the vote among them, but with the megaseries unended even now, nevermind in 2005, that just makes sense).

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 February 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

Rather than issues or stories or series or whatever, we should poll on HAPPENINGS, or EVENTS (but not EVENTS) in comics in 2005.
Like rather than nominate, oh, Action Comics #825, you'd nominate, Superman punches the sun (Action Comics #825). Or something. Maybe this is stupid.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 20 February 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

We've gotten to a point where a poll doesn't even get started. That's progress!

c(''c) (Leee), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

It'll be started by the end of the week, or I'll eat my sadface.

Chuck_Austen (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 20 February 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

Geez, L(ouis)eeeeeeee - hold off on the SADPOLL CRISIS until the poll actually starts, mmmkay?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

I wasn't criticizing! I am simultaneously:

1. appreciating the thought and effort put into the preparational considerations of this prospective consensus-building endeavor;

and

2. enjoying, ironically and otherwise, the Lacanian demonstration of desire/phallic lack embodied by the constantly-deferred nature of ILC polls.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 20 February 2006 23:49 (nineteen years ago)

Idea: how about two categories, for writers and for artists? We could base our votes for artists/writers on the entire oeuvre for the year, or just for a handful of outstanding works. Yes?

Also, BUMP.

c(''c) (Leee), Friday, 3 March 2006 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

Clearly we need INFINITE categories to make sure that everything is properly lauded.
Best character resurection not caused by Superboy punching the Universe
Best character death not caused by Superboy punching their head off
etc.
