WTF is up with the clamor over Spider-Man's marital status?
One the one hand, GET OVER IT. On the other hand, things change, so why couldn't Spider-Man and MJ get a d-i-v-o-r-c-e? Big deal!
Superman, on the other hand, is screwed, because, I think, you could write MJ out to pasture, since she's not THAT central a concept to Spider-Man, but Lois Lane?
On the other hand, I think that COULD make for an awesome story (and apparantly, Bryan Singer did too, come to think of it), of Lois moving on, Clark/Supes feeling awkward, Perry White telling them to suck it up, JIMMY'S DIVIDED LOYALTIES.
It could be DC's CIVIL WAR! Batman would obviously side with Lois and possibly even appear in court as a character witness. Superman would have to sell the Fortress of Solitude, and give Lois half the proceeds...but who would buy it? LEX LUTHOR! OH NO!

I assume "clamor" = "Joey Q discussing it on Noosearamada"?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

And now they've got a poll and all the other "news" sites are picking up on it!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

And now we're "talking" about "it"!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

NRAMA: You said: "Peter grew old and married a supermodel. Peter became Billy Joel." Did you really need to slight the “Piano Man”?

JQ: It’s funny, I’ve been saying that Billy Joel thing for years back before I was ever even at Marvel, it was so much more relevant back when he was married to the Christie Brinkley. I’m a huge Billy Joel fan, he was a ‘regular guy”, a kid from Long Island who made it good after playing hell holes and bars, a classical musician with the heart of a rocker. In many ways, Joel lost a lot of his “regular guy” appeal when he married Christie Brinkley.

By the way, god bless!!! Remember how dumb that Uptown Girl video was! Bruce Springsteen suffered from that when he married a model became a public. You kind of expect a Bowie, Jagger, or Rod Stewart to be marrying a supermodel, just as you would Tony Stark, but to me, Joel and Springsteen are more akin to Peter Parker with respect to their images.

subthread: Is n'rama p'fork and am I ILM?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

I hope someone has pointed out that Billy Joel's popularity never recovered, even after he ditched Brinkley.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

Comics creators taste in music - C/D.

I mean shit - Billy Joel? And didn't Morrison get all wet and squishy about Kuala fucking Shaker or whatever they were called? At least Alan Moore quotes Dylan and Costello in "Watchmen."

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Warren Ellis was on The Knife before most folks, IIRC.

Comparing uber-schlub Billy Joel and uber-stud Bruce Springsteen is 15 types of WTF.

"Uptown Girl" = Clone Saga???

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

Bruce Springsteen "suffering = making one of the biggest albums of the 80s?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

No discussion of Rolling Stone Brand Rock Music and Super-Hero Trademark Comics can continue until everyone's read the ULTRAMEGACLASSICBIZARRE Batman: Fortunate Son.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

over at CBR, a different comics writer (whose Deadshot mini last year was pretty good) says he listens to DEBARGE.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

And what's wrong w/ that? Also, he's a TV writer - musical taste is immaterial.

Meanwhile, Ed Brubaker listens to Neutral Milk Hotel bootlegs while writing Daredevil.

I know FOR A FACT Kirby was a big Beefheart fan, & Trout Mask Replica had a huge influence on his Fourth World stuff. FACT.

Herb Trimpe, OTOH, was a Monks / Stooges kinda guy.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, well, I just, y'know, gotta wonder what it means that for the dudes at the helm of the WORLD'S MOST TRADEMARKED SUPERHEROES culture seems to have stopped in 1985. Which is not necessarily in evidence, but at least suggested...

I seem to remember that Matt Wagner is a fan of The Jam. I don't know for sure what his opinion of Style Council is.

THIS JUST IN:
CBR: A lot of people might not know this about you, J.M. but you're also something of a musician. What instruments can you play? Does that take up a lot of your time when you're not writing?

J.M. DeMatteis: I play guitar and the piano. I sing, I write songs, and, back in the late '90s, I did an indie CD called "How Many Lifetimes?" It's been unavailable for a while, but I'm bringing it back out this year. You can get it now from CDBaby.com and, soon, from iTunes. I'm as proud of that CD as I am of anything I've ever done and I'm looking forward to (finally!) going back in the studio to do another one. God knows I've got enough material!

Music touches something in me that writing can't. I think the difference, ultimately, is that the joy of music is in the playing, the singing, the moment of creation. Writing is often hell in the creation stage and I don't get to enjoy it till the story is done. Then I can relax and appreciate what I've done. Sometimes the writing takes on the flow of a musical creation and I can just let it flow out of me without effort. That is a rare, and utterly magical, process. There are moments with "Abadazad" that are like that. It's as if I'm channeling a universe that already exists somewhere.
