A Brave New World (for ILC?)

This is just to say that, if / when ILX shits the bed, I'll gladly host this bitch on my webspace. That is all.

Let's talk about Captain America's tits again.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Tho I did notice that Jessie Da Monstah made mention of something that could absorb ILC & other satellite boards.

So let's talk about that & Cap's manmounds in tandem.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Is this a Civil War tie-in?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

ILx wants all posters to be registered. Us on Captain America's side sees no reason to ban anonymous posting.

Me, I think we should fight, and then team up to destroy the REAL MENACE.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

I've been drafted to write for some geek-culture catchall site and I know we have a server dedicated solely to that project and a business project by the same founders, PLUS there has been much debate about message boards--specifically that they would like it to be somewhat independent from the main project. SO I could, if it becomes necessary (which maybe now it's looking like it won't?) push for us to absorb ILC/ILG/ILF (which I mostly thought of first because I know they are far smaller than ILE/ILM and will probably not suffer if they have to share a server). The trouble would be in maintaining the current design/coding (which for me is a big reason why ILX is one of the only places I actively read), the fact that the forums becoming directly and inexorably tied to any other project makes me extremely uncomfortable (even one I'm whoring for), and the obvious transfer issues--we have good programmers, but the logistics of transferring an existing board are always going to be more hairy than just starting one from scratch.

But yeah, I would only do this if our little corner of ILX was in serious jeopardy and/or there was a very big push to do so.

Way to go me for making the most unreadable post ever.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

ILC/ILG/ILF

Strange trinity! ILF is very much not the same atmosphere as ILC or ILG. But that's my personal bias, and you're talking about bandwidth and not demographics.

Any qualms about moving to a non-ILx dedicated server I think would be mostly aesthetic -- will the barebones layout be preserved? will putting an "i" in front a picture url post the picture to a thread? will the search function turn back poxy fules? And so forth.

As to the archives, they could be stored on a separate WHATEVER to which is linked on nu-ILC, i.e. not an actual part of nu-ILC but accessible otherwise. I.E. I am in favor of starting from scratch, AS LONG AS I REMAIN PRESIDENT-FOR-LIFE. Failing that, then as long as I can use my monocled Kirby as a persistent handle.

And let's not forget David's generous offer upthread to host.

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

Also, since the entire ILX thing is up in the air at the moment, no decision is going to be made for now, obviously.

I assume other people are keeping a close(r) eye on developments on the other thread?

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

Strange trinity! ILF is very much not the same atmosphere as ILC or ILG. But that's my personal bias, and you're talking about bandwidth and not demographics.

To be completely honest I've read ILF maybe twice? so you know if it is all people talking about their profound student films then maybe they are not within the target demographic (which is still important to my bosses so yeah). :D

The layout preservation is my biggest concern--while I can almost guarantee it wouldn't stay completely as-is, I would fight for simplicity as much as possible. I have a modicum of pull with the design, but I do ZERO backend programming.

In terms of who would be in charge, I don't really feel I even have the right to perform most of the modding duties. I'd leave it to the current mods or trusted replacements, and stay on in an organizational/support/communication role at most.

Ultimately, I remain concerned about the risks of affiliating with a group who would have an active interest in how the boards are maintained, which my plan involves, so unless we desire greater exposure/bells and whistles/whatever, I would go with David's offer first probably.

I'm watching the other thread, which seems to be grounding around the central idea of giving authority to Pashmina and figuring out how/if to raise funds for a server, so my mumblings are a contingency plan at best, really. But I am the kind of person who relentlessly produces "Plan B's" so yeah.

Daniel, we're finishing up the design code but the backend's done so we should be up within the next month I think? Obviously I will plug it relentlessly once we go live. XD

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

Strangely enough I am a lot more concerned about this little place for talking about comics than ILE and (WAY MORE THAN) ILM.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

That's not a strange sentiment to have, J to tha M! Which I suppose factors into my basic concerns, that whatever happens short of an ILx-wide (i.e. all/most of the sub-boards) transplant, the rest of the Internets might taint the temperament that makes ILC so unique.&#/copy>

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

The only two places I am really bothered about are here and ILCooking - we seem to have backup plans for both already.

Or, as somebody said on ILCooking, "It's interesting watching some of the other boards, making arrangements or not, depending". We expect to have a possible replacement up by the weekend (despite the infrequent of... well... everybody).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I'm kind of surprised that nothing's come up on the baseball and NFL boards.

Whitman Mayonnaise (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Interesting stats:
new posts per board
ILE 47%
ILM 31%
Noize 8%
De Subjectivism 1%
I love Comics 1%

On average it was 93,818 posts per month.

Around 1,000 posts a month? I don't know if I should be impressed or if I should start complaining that ILC was better back in the day.

Clearly I'm bored enough to dive back into that thread.

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

I'll admit to being bemused by that figure as well.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

I think this was during the phase we found out Stacy got email notification on the Glasgow thread and we all posted to it ALL THE TIME to flood her mailbox.

This board makes me understand how lame CAPA-Alpha generally is. (But I hang around there for a few cool people and the freebies -- yesterday the Aug. mailing arrived with a CD full of Golden Age crime comics.)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 9 August 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

Strange trinity! ILF is very much not the same atmosphere as ILC or ILG.

Hey now. ILF is now on v.3.beta, and is currently without any atmosphere or, for that matter, posters. It's me and two other people now, basically, and I read more comics than I watch films. Although it's still more about experimental/indie than mainstream films, most of the bite-your-head-off-for-discussing-pop-movies posters seem to have faded away.

If anything, I'm pushing ILF to be more like ILBooks, which has become a good place to discuss "experimental" books without pushing away people who like more "mainstream" books. It seems to be a happy medium.

speaking of brave, new, and world, who's on the West Coast?
I'm moving to Vancouver in a few weeks. (broke up with my comic store yesterday, SADFACE OWNERS)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 10 August 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

The entire West Coast, or just the Canadian part?

In any case, Matt Maxwell, Chaki and I are all in California.

c('°c) (Leee), Thursday, 10 August 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the entire West Coast, I guess. I don't think there are any BC ILCers? (yet!)
Once I've made my fortune as a beachcomber, I am looking forward to much west coast travelling. Maybe even Sadface Diego next yr!

Douglas is in PDX? I probably knew that, but always, for some reason known only in my subconscious, imagined him in New England. Wearing a pilgrim hat.
