ONE (third of one) YEAR LATER!

So much catching up to do.
While there was a bit of action on the sandbox, WHAT IS GNU?

I still haven't read the last four issues of Rocketo, nor the first new Legion trade. I did finish Essential Spider-Man Vol. 6, it is rad.
I have stopped buying A LOT of DC comics, and even passed on Showcase Presents Shazam, and was slightly disappointed by Showcase Presents Unknown Soldier (though there's lots of great stuff in it). The new Flash will be awful forever, the new Blue Beetle is wandering towards mediocrity, Teen Titans, Nightwing, Green Arrow and Outsiders are a gong show of AWFULNESS that make Green Lantern almost tolerable by comparison. Is the third 7Soldiers trade out yet?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

First nu-Legion trade is fab fun, third 7S has been out for months.

c('°c) (Leee), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

I got the first two issues of the nu-Legion series, so whenever I go to read the trade, I'm like, "OH BOTHER, I'VE READ THIS ALREADY!"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

Fourth 7S comes out at the end of the month, I think.

I've never been a huge DC guy, but the only OYL title to hold my attention at all is the Atom. Last week's issue was pretty good again, after the lackluster conclusion to the first arc.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

Even though what I am about to say would result in a lot of you guys throwing stuff at me if you could, I'm just gonna do it…

(deep breath)

I like the Meltzer JLA. I am kinda disappointed that its going to take them six goddamn months to tell a story anyone should have been able to in 2 or 3. It seems like he was able to get the extrememy problematic Identity Crisis going at a brisk pace.

But I like the characterization.

veronica moser (veronica moser), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 23:41 (nineteen years ago)

I just caught up on two Marvel runs that have been lying around waiting for me to read.

Squadron Supreme is really, really awful...adolescent wallowing in amorality, stories I've been reading SO OFTEN since the 80s (OMG religious nut is sexual hypocrite! Didnt see that one coming!), really hackneyed 00s 'it's political' approach, and now the umpteenth rehash of the Kid Miracleman fight. Slick but unpleasant.

(Also when will ppl realise that if you have a character whose power is to be unbelievably intelligent, you will invariably end up writing him by making everybody else act stupid.)

At the other end of the enjoyment scale is Dr Strange: The Oath, which tells a good Dr Strange yarn, has lots of flashbacks to Strange being an arse and also includes a MONSTER retcon about how magic works in the Marvel U, hidden at the bottom of a panel in #3. Nothing original but exciting, enjoyable and well-told, and there's a certain amount of dramatic tension in that the nasty fatcat villains are pretty obviously going to have to win in the long run.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Strange is great. I liked that quote from Ed Norton in the Onion where he says his whole basis for his character (in whatever new movie he has coming out) is Doctor Strange.

also includes a MONSTER retcon about how magic works in the Marvel U, hidden at the bottom of a panel in #3

pls elaborate

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

That bit about "oh, magic can't duplicate anything once science has invented it"!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeah, lol

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 00:32 (nineteen years ago)

I want to read DSTO.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

So you should.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

the new Blue Beetle is wandering towards mediocrity

Um, dude! The last issue featured SEVERE 52 CROSSOVER ACTION! BB's girl takes Mother-Box-in-a-brick to that place where Animal Man & Starfire & Adam Strange were! Little Critters folk worship Starfire! She's handed a piece of AM's costume! & BB's fighting a NEW GOD! U NUTZ!

Tom, does your dismissal of JMS' Squad Supreme include SUPREME POWER, the precursor series w/ ultraviolence & tittays?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

er, but the previous 4 issues of nu/old Peacemaker: "I'm the bestest at what I do" BB's Mom: "OMG you're a spacebug!" got tiring.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

Other good things at the moment

Atom
Jonah Hex
Superman Confidential
Aquaman
Omega Men
Spirit
Supergirl/Legion
The Creeper
Spiderman [hearts] Mary Jane
X-Factor
Ben Grimm leaving the FF in the main FF title (especially the French Avengers)
Agents of Atlas
Irredeemable Ant-Man

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

OK, yeah, I can see that.

(Oh god fuck the French Avengers.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

How did Superman comics become so uniformly better than their Batman counterparts???

Even Mozzo's brief (but he'll be back, RIGHT?) run on BatmanBatman was less exhileratingly BATMAN! than Busiek's first few SupermanSuperman stories were SUPERMAN! And Batman Confidential is pretty middling even by LOTDK standards, while ASB&RTBW largely succeeds as g0nz0p0rn more than anything else. We got ONE amazing JHW3 issue of Detective.

WHEN WILL POPE BRING THE SUPERMAN???

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Also, Krypto the Superdog is much better than The Batman Strikes.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

aldo, you might be the first person to rep favorably for The Creeper, as the buzz I've heard is OMG WHAT THE EFF IS THIS CRAP?

I need to find out what I'm actually buying on a monthly basis & weed out all the garbage.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

The last issue featured SEVERE 52 CROSSOVER ACTION!

That's no recommendation!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

YOU

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 20:32 (nineteen years ago)

(I actually though this was going to be a review of the OYL stuff, except that it's more like Two Thirds of a Year Later, and I was pissed off, because I only yesterday shelved my plans to do exactly that, and deleted 4 GB of cbrs).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

Well, except for Superman, Aquaman, Batman, Blue Beetle and Green Lantern Corps, you made the right choice.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 11 January 2007 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Haha GLC actually went some months back. It turns out there really is nothing that can make me care about them on an ongoing basis. Darwyn Cooke can cover them in the gravy of awesome art, and mix them all up with the carrots of the Flash and the... the... GREEN LANTERNS SUCK!

I might go buy Up Up and Away if it's out in TPB yet, though.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 11 January 2007 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

OH, and Omega Men is pretty cool. But those titles I listed aren't "awesome comics" necessarily, anyway, they're just the only ones that didn't completely shit the bed. Though BOP, it's not their fault, since Meltzoid pulled rank on Black Canary, so that he'd have someone to stand around and do nothing except maybe pine for Ollie (anybody else get through that self-indulgent LITG [redundant] year-end thing and see THAT dismal spoiler?). BOP is actually still pretty good, despite, but it's REALLY not the same w/o Dinah.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 11 January 2007 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

Aside from Bendis on USM, I think Gail's run on BOP (aside from 1 lonely little fill in) is the longest current run on 1 title for anyone working @ the Big Two - she's closing in on 50 issues! LOVE YOU GAIL! AND NOT IN A FREAKY COMIC NERD WAY!

I'm totally buying them a set of knives - multi-purpose!

Hot-to-trot title of recent vintage not many folks are reading: MIDNIGHTER. So far, super-fun time traveling shenanigans where The Midnighter (from teh Authoritah) has to KILL HITLER or else HE DIES! Drawn by Huk's man-crush Chris Sprouse! Written by Garth Ennis in an enjoyable "I don't hate superheroes, really" fashion!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 January 2007 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

How is Sprouse my man, again?
Sprouse didn't draw the whole third issue, and that was a bummer. Otherwise, I second the recommendation!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 11 January 2007 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Ha - I extrapolated from some ILC thread from a while back where you give CS a shout-out that you heart him.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 January 2007 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

Probably. He was the best Giffen fill-in on 5YL LOSH. And Tom! Strong! Hubbax2.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 11 January 2007 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Aside from Bendis on USM, I think Gail's run on BOP (aside from 1 lonely little fill in) is the longest current run on 1 title for anyone working @ the Big Two - she's closing in on 50 issues!

Not counting Vertigo? Y and Fables are over the half-century, and 100 Bullets is half of the way to the full 100.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 January 2007 07:40 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking more of non-creator-owned spandex books.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 12 January 2007 14:19 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, have we ever had an official Love & Rockets thread, or is it just the indie guilt thread? I can't find one.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

The'res a TS: Maggie vs Hopey but I think that's on ILE. Maybe a naughty admin could steal it and port it between boards (if that power still exists!)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

I coulda sworn there was a Beto vs Jaime thread?

A B C (sparklecock), Friday, 12 January 2007 15:21 (nineteen years ago)

Aha, seaching on Love & Rockets didn't bring these up but Beto Jaimie did:

TS: Beto or Xaime?

Love & Rockets - classic or dud
