A friend just recommended this series. Is there a collection, or is it single books? And is there a consensus?

I dunno, but there's a movie coming soon.

It's all been collected into sundry trade paperbacks, and My Official Opinion is that get the first volume (simply entitled Sin City) and don't worry about the rest, because Lanky Miller's art and prose get more flaccid with each volume.

(Though a lot of people rate Family Values, and That Yellow Bastard is not wholly devoid of worth.)

And here's me being a possessive fanboy about the movie: Sin City: The Movie

The 3 being used for the movie : the original Sin City, The Big Fat Kill and That Yellow Bastard are the best.
But if you really like them, you'll probably like all of the others too.

First one is totally ace. Yellow Bastard is good, but not nearly as much as the first.

GOOD GRIEF!

Hahahahaha. That's overtaken Dave Sim's effort in C&S II as my favourite Miller parody in a single bound.

Alan Moore's "Dourdevil" is pretty fun:

three weeks pass...

I just read the first collection of All-Star Batman and Robin, and holy shit!! This must be some sort of a self-parody, right?! I find it hard to believe that even Miller is this batshit crazy. Take the new origin story for Black Canary, for example: how could anyone write something like that with a straight face?! I have to say, though, that the utterly looney nature of the whole thing makes it much more entertaining than some of the more moderately crazy stuff Miller's put out. Maybe that was his plan all along?

He hasn't confirmed it, but I've believe it is. At the very least, the series gets even more ridiculous and self-conscious about its batshitness as it went on, regardless of how much he intended to be tongue-in-cheek from the start. By the end of that trade, it was totally self-aware (the Green Lantern issue was just hilarious).
