this thread has mutated to propose that our favourite one-eyed provocaesthete is secretly a crime fightin enigma

have there ever been stories where the tortuous path towards choosing of a superhero's defining accoutrements and/or branding were part of his/her character?

(I realise this borders on CAN'T-CHOOSE-COSTUME-MAN type gags, but just askin like)

You mean where a character's life changes triggers a change of costume / identity? If that's the case, then Ant Man / Giant Man / Goliath / Yellowjacket / Hank Mofkin' Pym to thread!

no, more that a character's character means that deciding on a costume is a task in itself, which on the the face of it seems to eat into precious crime-fighting time BUT IN FACT helps the fighting in unexpected ways

eg lord peter wimsey's dandyism is part of his shtick but it also means he knows lots about dress etc, which is useful when trawlin for clues sometimes

Frankly, it's about time Pym got a totally new identity.

"Hey, everybody! I'm MR BIG now."
"At breakfast you were SIZE-MO-GRAPH, Hank. Is everything all right at home?"
"Things are always all right - for MOTHMASTER! Gotta run, Cap, I have a date with a tailor."

(if anyone understood my question)

i just realised it is an extension of my PROVEN-BY-BEING-TRUE theory that therew is a direct lineage between sherlock holmes and lawrence llewellyn bowen: viz they both like to go into other ppl's houses and make snarky comments about the decor (SH's pretext = the solving of crime/LLB's pretext = the manufacture of reality-TV)

On reading some old Avengers, the Hawkeye/Goliath switch-over is presented as a tortuous crisis of the self, if that helps. Hawkeye starts thinking that the ability to shoot an arrow well is not really very super AND THEN HIS BOWSTRING SNAPS which sends him into, frankly, a nervous breakdown. Hank Pym idly mentions that he's sworn off growing for a bit due to doctor's orders and Hawkeye runs off to STEAL HIS NEW COSTUME and drink an untested super-growth-serum which is twice as powerful as the old one. And when the other Avengers call him on it he snaps his bow in half.

Is that close?

Vic Fluro, Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

haha yes!

but clearly there is less of this kind of thing than there might be if i had eg grant morrison's new job for a week or so

Changing costumes is also an essential part of the Wasp's character for she is A FEMALE.

Vic Fluro, Saturday, 25 June 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Back in the 80s, there was that whole storyline where Spider-Man gets a sinister new costume.

Iron Man seems like he might be an example of this as well, changing his armor every year or two.

He must!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

The costume he's wearing looks more pink than red. Also, "the Rainbow Batman"... Is this where all the rumours began?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I think this is almost proof that the writers and artists were aware of the rumours.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Will Brooker to thread.

Vic Fluro, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Exactly.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

And also, yeah. Will Brooker to ILC. Don't be shy!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Does Spidey's symbiote costume speak to the original question?

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

cf. power girl's explanation of her "missing" logo!
