The I Love Comics Characters Poll - Voting Open, Closes FRIDAY 19th AUGUST

Message Bookmarked

Below are a list of 125 comics characters - your nominations for the best characters of all time.

You can vote for up to 20 of them. Please list your picks in order of how bestest the characters are, if possible.

Points will be assigned as follows: 25 for #1, 20 for #2, then 18, 17 and so on down to 1. Characters will also get 2 bonus points for every individual vote they get.

DO NOT POST YOUR VOTES TO THIS THREAD. Votes should be sent by email to freakytrigger AT gmail DOT com, mark them [ILC] if possible, thanks!

Closing date is Friday 19th August.

There are two optional other parts of the poll.

1. Picking a 'greatest moment' for any or all of the characters you've picked, this will appear with the entry. You can also provide comments explaining why the character is great, if you like.

2. Picking your three worst characters from the list - this will not affect the poll in any way but might be interesting.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Characters will also get 2 bonus points for every individual vote they get.

I don't get you. Do you mean that our votes count for 27-3 points?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Yes, essentially, but it seemed simpler to explain it this way.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

(Also by having them as bonus points on the spreadsheet I can see if they actually have any effect on placing)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 18 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Okay. I thought it might be some kind of guard against loopholes that would allow you to vote for the same character twice. EG if someone had nominated Batman and someone had nominated Frank Miller's Batman, then you could vote for both but they'd only get one bonus point each. Or something.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 18 July 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't the nomination for the rat creatures in Bone specifically for the two (unnamed) rat creatures who love quiche, not for all rat creatures?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I amn't down on Bone lore, I thought they all did. I will amend.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

The ONE Rat Creature that loves quiche! I chose it specifically so that I didn't run into the "ain't that multiple characters?" thing again.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

wow, no one nominated "Guy begging to be let drown before Giant Scorpion gets him".

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

I love that guy.

Did he drown in the end or did the Giant Sea Scorpions get him?

tiger, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

It would be great if there was in fact no story inside relating to the cover.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

amazingly, I do not think it was ever fully established whether the guy drowned first or not, but either way he was eaten by the Giant Sea Scorpions.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 19 July 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

The panel was shown in the comic itself, but unfortunately it cut away before cause of death could be established.

Vic Fluro, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

A couple of timely reminders.

Vic Fluro, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

Did he drown in the end or did the Giant Sea Scorpions get him?

memory reveals that inside the comic, there is a frame where the go goes "No! The Pincers! AIEEEEE!", so I think it is safe to assume that he did not get to drown.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Poor man.

More votes pls.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I have voted

Mark C (Markco), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

SAVE ROOM FOR MARMADUKE YALL

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I'll end up voting for almost none of my own nominations, which were shitty. Nominations I wish I'd made: Dr Strange, T-Rex from Daily Dinosaur, Alec McGarry.

Vic Fluro, Wednesday, 20 July 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

The Spider (The Spider)

is this classic Brit comic character The Spider?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

i'm disappointed no one nominated calvin's dad, who is obv the greatest comic character ever.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 21 July 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

DV it is.

A handful of clear front runners emerging already.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 July 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

The nomination "Black Cat (?????)" should read "Black Cat (Speed Comics). She's the Golden Age character who also had her own comic, and two thick reprint issues in 1966.

Aside to DV: "classic Brit comic character The Spider" was known as Blackman in France

David

David Simpson (David Simpson), Thursday, 21 July 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

One for the weights and measures squad perhaps.

Vic Fluro, Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

where do i vote for the dude who molested the young Peter Parker?

Lee F# (fsharp), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

toooooo laaaaaaaaate

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

where do i vote for the dude who molested the young Peter Parker?

You can nominate him here: Tournament Time! Superheroes Smackdown! NOMINATION THREAD

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

But is it too late to nominate the Weird Mummy Insects?

(or I guess A Weird Mummy Insect?)

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Just sent you my vote, Tom. As with the last poll, I can provide you with blurbs if/when needed.

Since I'm a nitpicker, I'd like to say that the Marsupilami appears in a comic called Spirou and Fantasio (not Spirou and Fantasia), Spirou and Fantasio being the two main characters.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 22 July 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

Stop perverting my tournament thread!

Leeeeeee (Leee), Friday, 22 July 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

can someone answer my question about The Spider? I do not want to throw votes at this character, only to discover that it is some lamer American indie comic character I have ended up voting for.

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 23 July 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

there you have it: the spider = calvin's dad.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 23 July 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I voted! And included random comments, mostly for my own benefit.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 23 July 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

(not to give anything away JD but i sorta kinda address the "calvin's dad" issue in my comments --- albeit in a way that will possibly disappoint you!!)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 24 July 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Votes are literally trickling in for this! It's all very exciting!

There's one character who's well ahead, tho not so well that a couple of ballots couldn't change it. Not who I'd have guessed, either. Then there's a big pack hustlin and bustlin. 90 out of 125 characters have so far got a vote.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 July 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Voted!

Tumililingan (ex machina), Monday, 25 July 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

>> There's one character who's well ahead

Go go Black Lois!!!

Mark C (Markco), Monday, 25 July 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Christ, no one nominated The Beyonder!

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 25 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Sorry DV.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 July 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

only 18 days to go!

I saw a band on Friday who had a song about Wulf Sternhammer, so I know who they'll be voting for.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 1 August 2005 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes indeed.

It's anyone's frankly.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 1 August 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Was that Mezzcode with 'Sternhammer Stomp'?

Vic Fluro, Monday, 1 August 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

No, it was WARLORDS OF PEZ with "Johnny Alpha, Wulf Sternhammer, Search-Destroy Agents of the future". Those were also the entire lyrics of the song, but they did repeat them several times.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 1 August 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

I might have at least 5 open spots on my ballot, so I'm willing to sell them, for the right price!

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

Would you put Donna Troy in there? I'm afraid I'm gonna be the only one who gives her a vote! what a loser.

iodine (iodine), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

I scratch your back, etc.

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

I never did anything quite like this thing of buying someone else's vote.

I feel so dirty...

iodine (iodine), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

I never post to ILC and don't read it much, I just came over to root for Black Lois Lane!

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I guess I better decide and vote pretty soon, huh?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 14 August 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

I just sent my ballot.

Truckdrivin' Buddha (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 14 August 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

FIVE DAYS TO GO.

I've updated with the latest votes, the current leader is leading by 23 points, a commanding yet not impregnable margin. 26 characters remain - gasp! (choke) - voteless.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

MORE VOTES! MORE I SAY!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

SHIT! Okay, tonight for sure.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

COUNT MINE MORE TIMES

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

I finally got around to voting just now.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

You did, and it's caused upheavals up and down the chart!

Only 17 friendless characters now, including some who I'd have picked as potentials in the final list (a Top 50, probably).

Much closer at the top than it was this lunchtime.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I WILL VOTE SOON.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

i finally voted!! my ballot is the most predictable ever, i'm sure.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 18 August 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

erm did i vote? after sorting out my computer meltdown shenanigans i have recovered every email i received or sent from april 2002 to june 2005 but has irretreivably lost all of july 2005

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 18 August 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

Yes you did mark!

(I might ask you for a comment or 2 tho)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 18 August 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

I realise that reacting with amazement to an omission is unacceptable when I didn't nominate anyone, but Wot No J Jonah Jameson? Or Halo Jones?

What would be interesting but probably more trouble than it's worth would be best relationships in comics. There were a lot of places where I would have like to have split my vote because two characters were only really brilliant when in the same room.

Anyway, my vote's in the mail.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

OK realistically the results for this won't start until Monday. But vote now anyway!!!

If you haven't already that is.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 18 August 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I WILL VOTE TONIGHT!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 18 August 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I'll vote tomorrow.

Mark S, did you get the ILX comp in the post?

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 18 August 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Overnight votes counted, there is now only 2 points in it at the top! And the chasing pack is very close.

LAST CHANCE TO VOTE!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 19 August 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

jel i did! thank you!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 19 August 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

I am just not qualified to vote.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

OH FUCK. I knew I was supposed to do something more than watch Columbo last night. I will vote now.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I voted. I hope not too late. It's still Friday in Saskatchewan!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Saturday, 20 August 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

How long to tabulate?

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Saturday, 20 August 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

I've been tabulating as I go, I'll add the final votes on Monday.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 20 August 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

oh crap forgot to vote D:

tom west (thomp), Sunday, 21 August 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

can i still vote?

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Yes, if you vote tonight I'll count it, I'm not going to be doing the final count until tomorrow anyway.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

also, is this where i can bug you about cowboy troy?

anthony easton (anthony), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 21 August 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

and of course I forgot to vote before flying away on my holidays. Poor Wulf Sternhammer.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 25 August 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

Bad news DV: my love of Wulf has also gone unregistered.

chap who would dare to thwart the revolution (chap), Thursday, 25 August 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

the results don't seem to be out yet... can I still vote?

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 26 August 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Results are ongoing on another thread.

I voted for Wulf :(

Tom (Groke), Friday, 26 August 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

I might send my votes in anyway.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 26 August 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

You could just post them on this thread.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 26 August 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

(not to give anything away JD but i sorta kinda address the "calvin's dad" issue in my comments --- albeit in a way that will possibly disappoint you!!)
