Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh hot! "Before Grant Morrison and Robbie Williams, there was ... NEIL GAIMAN AND ALICE COOPER!" Plz note that the promo text for this (the Dark Horse Last Temptation TPB) neglects to mention that this project involved ALICE COOPER at all.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Just SS: Manhattan Guardian and Y for me. And maybe Serenity, although I apparently missed #2.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

not much at all here.
gotham central, detective, house of M.

meh.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

But GC and 'Tec are gonna be really good!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I also have to get The New Frontier vol. 2, since I finally got around to reading vol. 1 last night.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

and...???

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

I liked it! I was confused for a few pages here and there since I'm not familiar with some of the characters (Challengers of the Unknown, for ex.), but the Martian Manhunter/Batman storyline is awesome. I enjoyed the dinosaurs as well.

Who is the dude with the hood and hammer who kicks KKK ass?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

It's sort of a Steel fill-in.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Really? That makes sense, I just assumed that he wouldn't be using characters created after the, I dunno, 80's.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Some parts rely a little too heavily on reference (i.e. comic book dood knowledge) for my tastes, but most of it stands on its own and the art/writing are top notch.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Who is the dude with the hood and hammer who kicks KKK ass?

You mean John Henry? I took him (& his demise) to be some comment on the complete lack of non-white superfolk in the DC-verse, & any resemblance to Steel was just because they both used John Henry as an archetype.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

I read in an interview with Cooke that he wanted address race issues, but had to go outside the parameters to be able to do, since, y'know, there just weren't a lot of black characters in comics back then.

xpost, there's a scene in the final chapter that brings it full circle.

Anyway, I'm going to start a new thread related to this.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

not related to John Henry, but related to New Frontier.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Y! Fell! (By the by, I hear Ellis's new alternative comic message board has some really hot moderators. It goes live 9-7. Join, won't you?) House of M! And Uncanny X-Men, which doesn't inspire enough enthusiasm for an exclamation point.

Madolan, Tuesday, 6 September 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Oh hot! "Before Grant Morrison and Robbie Williams, there was ... NEIL GAIMAN AND ALICE COOPER!" Plz note that the promo text for this (the Dark Horse Last Temptation TPB) neglects to mention that this project involved ALICE COOPER at all.

b-b-but... your quote says ALICE COOPER in big letters

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Because it was MY QUOTE and I am known throughout the internet for my WANTON ABUSE OF CAPITAL LETTERS!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

In one day, the Ellis bored's mixed it up w/ the Bendis bored AND gotten whacked by 46K people. That's a pretty good first day.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Villains United #5 HOLY FUCK! SERIOUS CRISIS CRISIS SHIT! HOLY FUCKITY FUCKHOLE!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Gotham Central My favourite chapter in the Dead Robin story so far. There's a bit of wheel-spinning going on, but the character moments really shine. For a minute, I thought it might even by Infinite Crisis-related (like the dead Robins were maybe from Alternate Earths).

Detective Comics City of Crime kicks ass. It's been like three issues since Batman appeared in costume (not counting the War Crimes bullshit)! I really like Lapham's take on Robin, even though I guess it's inconsistent with the accepted model, but Lapham lets Robin act like the kid he is. Hopefully Gordon will get a bigger role in issues to come.

Superman I bought this for the cover. But (and I think I actually got distracted before reading the last few pages) there's NO ZOOM inside! WTF? Though, I guess you could argue that since it's a Bizarro story, Zoom am inside the comic because he amn't on the cover.

Outsiders GROSS.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Seven Soldiers back on track -- new Guardian v. spooky, 'specially if you read issue 0 afterwards. This "self-contained" thing is really coming apart, though (not that I care).

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

BTW, Why has Commish Gordon dissapeared from Batman? And why did someone think that was a good idea?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

In a really quite excellent story (aside from the results), "Officer Down", Gordon was shot, and upon surviving the ordeal finally came to his senses and said, "FUCK THIS NOISE!"

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

He's been around, howev. He was really, really good in a Brubaker-penned story in Detective about 2 years ago where Batman teamed up with the Golden Age Green Lantern to solve a mystery from the 40s, and he starred (though didn't get above title placement) in last year's (or maybe even older) Batman: Room Full of Strangers, which is really good.
And I think he shows up BOP sometimes.

More love for Scott Morse, you guys!

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

what else has he done?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Frank Espinosa is on ILC!!! That's cooler than R!ch J0hnston's cameo. Not as cool as a Will Brooker walk-on, but still...

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Huk, why'd you post that to THIS thread? Are you hiding?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I don't want to scare him off.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

R!ch Jhnst0n was here?

It's not intending to be.

Lying In The Gutters is, however. See what I mean later today.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

WHERE IS WILL BROOKER?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

So, do you guys still want to hear about Scott Morse?

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

New thread!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Scott Morse: S/D

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Gotham Central keeps getting better. The plot thickens.
Iron Man house of M ended with, what, a 12 Monkeys pastiche? Still a fun read though.
House of M I read too quickly to really "get." need to re-read tonight..

did anyonebuy Jack Cross last week? I picked it up today on a whim... mediocre art. downright silly cover... the second half picks up a little, though the surprise near the end was a bit of a bummer

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 9 September 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

For a minute, I thought it might even by Infinite Crisis-related (like the dead Robins were maybe from Alternate Earths). - this would be so cool

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

Read Jack Cross. Liked it, tho it did take a while to actually get off the ground. Art was fine (tho I thought Gary Erskine was someone else, I guess - I expecting something more like Chris Weston; GE was working the Above Average And Servicable Valiant Artist angle, which is A-OK in my book). And the surprise (wah wah) was something I was sorta expecting. Surprised WE didn't just name the character "Bower", tho now I know why this is not a mini.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 9 September 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Y was good, and Manhattan Guardian was REALLY f'n good. GM went from zero to hero after that final Shining Knight issue.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Also, uh, Whah-huh.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 9 September 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

urprised WE didn't just name the character "Bower"

OTM

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand. Is this a Dane Bowers joke?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Friday, 9 September 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

I think it's a Jack Bauer joke
