What is the deal with Mark Mars?

I've been watching the Aeon Flux dvd set and listening to the commentaries and something is driving me nuts - with all due respect, how the hell did Mark Mars land a job as a writer? In the commentary tracks to which he contributes, he's painfully ineloquent; half of what he says is at best pretentious, meaningless waffle, and at worst seemingly demonstrative of a fundamental lack of understanding of the show itself; on several occasions he misuses words, clearly not knowing their meaning; his statements are often either mere repetition of the other commentators words, or trail off into inarticulacy. There were several times in the commentaries when a Mars statement was followed by a brief but very palpable moment of awkwardness, in which someone would have to step in and correct him or try and salvage the train of thought.

Again, apologies if he's a friend of yours, Peter, and with respect - I'm just sort of fascinated that such an intelligent show would employ someone like this...

You know, if you dont like Mark's work on the show fine, be as critical as you want, but to come here, and just be hateful of someone you dont even know, who sincerely tried to make something you care about a good show is also a very pretentious thing to do. What kind of answer are you expecting from Peter anyway? And what exactly qualifies your opinion as to who or what type of person Mark Mars is?

I have to disagree with CMS - I thought Mark's commentary on Thanatophobia, for instance (I haven't gotten through the second disc of commentaries yet) was decently informative, and I liked his bits in the other episodes I've seen so far was good. The nice thing is, that while Peter and the producers' input in the commentaries is pretty straightforward and mostly facts, it's nice to have Mark in there to keep the commentaries from being TOO dry and serious. I thought he was hilarious (Intentionally or unintentionally, well, I wasn't always sure, to be frank.) He seemed to make the others laugh, too.

As far as his scriptwriting... do I even need to defend that, here? If you are a fan of this show it's likely you appreciated the episodes he contributed to and co-wrote.

How Mars joined the project has been well described by Skye already.

Aeon Flux DVD release on Tuesday!

(His comments are) "...seemingly demonstrative of a fundamental lack of understanding of the show itself"-- Well, since you understand the show so well, why are you bothering listening to the commentaries?

"I'm just sort of fascinated that such an intelligent show would employ someone like this..." From what I'm told, the show doesn't attempt to make any sense. That is the source of its brilliance.

I will say that his commentaries on the DVD are maybe ironic to a fault. Like his occasional posts...

Yeah, fair enough, on reflection I'm being an asshole. I haven't earned the right to come barging in here and start trash talking - I'm doing the thing I always said I hated others doing, which is abusing the internet's privilege of anonymity to say things I likely wouldn't have the guts to say in person.

My opinion hasn't really changed, but I definitely have reconsidered my approach to voicing it, so apologies to anyone I offended here, particularly Messrs. Chung and Mars.

CMS,
No hard feelings, really.
You've in fact raised a topic that is a problem in commercial filmmaking.
Often the most talented individuals are shut out of contributing to studio product because they are eccentric in their personal demeanor or otherwise "unpolished". Working with him was often unpredictable, but what came out of the process was gold. Ultimately what matters is what ends up on the screen.

On the other hand, studios may favor those with middling abilities but who won't ruffle feathers in meetings with executives.

I've known Mark since 1980, when we met at CalArts. Unlike some of the seasoned Hollywood writers we tried, he didn't feel uneasy about the how the show was something so "personal". He not only truly understood Aeon's character, he endowed her with traits and speech which matched the sinewy dexterity of her movements and physical appearance.

Her caustic, condescending, yet irresistible seduction of Onan.
Her chastisement of Trevor in Claudius' body chamber.
"The stars in your eyes, they're stolen."
"You can't give it, can't even buy it, and you just don't get it."
Aeon's V.O. in the Deviant Devices section of the dvd. (For which the images do not always match, unfortunately)
Large sections of the Herodotus File.*
An entire script on spec for a second season that never happened.

...I could go on, but we'd be here all day.

*I have to say that Japhet Asher and Peter Gaffney were mostly responsible (and mostly uncredited) for the book's coherence, structure and historical arc. Gaffney wrote the great climactic showdown.

Interesting for me to read "Often the most talented individuals are shut out of contributing to studio product because they are eccentric in their personal demeanor or otherwise "unpolished"".

That's very well put Peter. I've always wondered about the inner workings of a production and the personalities involved. I've met plenty of eccentric artists, as I'm sure everyone has. I've always marveled that the Pope hired Michelangelo, who was homosexual and in love with the model he used for his statue of David. How is it the churchgoing public back then accepted that David was in the buff? How well did that go over? Wasn't that supposed to be 'an intelligent show employing someone'? He clearly didn't fit into the Catholic plot.

Good work is good work. Mark once wrote a great little scenario on our forum. A scene of a parade of Breens marching before Chairman Goodchild . It painted a vivid and powerful image of a grey faschist morning in Bregna, and I still see it in my mind as if I watched hidden from some skyscraping cement Bregnan birds nest. I felt I became part of Aeon Flux's world it was so 'real'.

If I can find it again and put it here I will. I think you would be impressed.

Hey I watched for Mark to not make any sense, and he was like making total sense.?

Have I been into this show too long?

Barb e (Barb e), Tuesday, 27 December 2005 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

I think age has finally taken Mark into an era of comprehensibility.

We should all weep for the past.

skye, Thursday, 29 December 2005 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

Excellent. I do appreciate the consideration (and sincerely)!

Mark Mars, Friday, 30 December 2005 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

Mark,

I have looked for that great little piece of literature you wrote on our forum when you first came to us and can't find it, you don't remember where you posted that do you? The old forum is half deleted and in disaray. It looks like a war zone.

Barb e (Barb e), Sunday, 1 January 2006 01:15 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't all that stuff backed up here: http://p088.ezboard.com/baeonflux18779
at some point?

Joshua Aldridge, Sunday, 1 January 2006 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

I'll look it up. I think I know what you're referring to, Barb. It's some early draft I did for the title sequence, I believe. I'll dig it up, you bet.

Anyway, I have just gotten back from a long vacation and have not yet finished unpacking. Which is why I've been remiss in posting.

Mark Mars, Monday, 2 January 2006 08:12 (nineteen years ago)

Mark, I really loved that draft as you call it, so beautiful an image of that world created. It would be great to have it here, I just wish you could write us an episode! Let us hope that time comes!

Barb e (Barb e), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone interested in more Mars should check this out for a personal rant on the drug war and an extensive resume. I hope you don't mind me posting this, is there anything else or yours out there for consumption Mark?

scottai (scottai), Thursday, 5 January 2006 08:25 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, I just posted a thread from the old board. It has what I think you were reffering to Barb - definatlely a great Aeon Flux scene description from Mark. I just posted the whole thing up because I wasnt sure of what to cut from the whole thread (to lazy to read it all).

Um, yeah. Yeah - believe it of not I'm about to launch a friggin' fkn' Mark Mars website with all sorts of video and music and crap...not to mention of course all sorts of fkn' text (rants, poems, diatribe, etc. etc. etc...).

And thenI'm going to go get drunk...

Mark Mars, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

Not necessarily in that order, I imagine.

"What is the deal with Mark Mars?"

Lol, I wondered the same thing when I first saw and heard him on the DVD.
Not as in "whats the deal, he's not talented",
but "whats the deal, this guy is nuts"!
:)

He looks and acts like some kind of biker/rocker guy, not what I expected at all. I've known a few biker type guys that were into sci-fi and creative stuff back in the 70's, but they seemed kinda rare and I haven't known one since my youth in berkeley. John Shirley is another Rock and Roll sci-fi writer, so apparently they do still exist. Now I wonder if Mars had a hand in lending a subversive "punk" feel to the series, especially in the long episodes.

I'll admit I also have a hard time following where exactly he's going in some of his posts and commentaries. But they don't sound like HE doesn't know what he's talking about, I'M just not always sure what he's talking about. And doesn't that actually make him perfect for the series anyway.

His commentary for the purge was also really funny. He must be a blast to hang around, if a bit intense.

Mark mars is one of the most brilliant artist I have ever known. He was a friend of mine for years and he was not limited to writing. He is a great musician and true visionary. What artist are "polished", let alone not crazy? What would people say about you if they watched a short video of you?

He is the male AEON

Baldvin, Sunday, 4 June 2006 07:09 (nineteen years ago)

Mark is a musician?

Barb e (Barb e), Monday, 5 June 2006 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

I find all this discussion hilarious...I just finished the DVD box set (I was an Aeon Flux virgin) and when I was done the bonus disc the first thing I thought was "Who is Mark Mars"? His "death toy" rap at the end of the featurette is totally classic. When I searched for references to him, I got this link. Such an interesting and involved discussion revolving around someones unconventional behavior, it's wonderful. I admit that some of the content of the show left me scratching my head and wondering if I should have stayed in university a little longer. If any good can be gotten out of the Aeon Flux Movie, it is that it led me to this imaginative and yes "unconventional" series. Jennifer.

jennifer barclay, Friday, 9 June 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Mars, looks like you got a new fan!

Thanks for posting, Jennifer.
You'll find all you'd want to know (and much that you didn't) relating to Aeon Flux right here.

You can still read the original, now inactive AF forum at:
(Start from the bottom and work your way up)

Mark and I post here regularly. Still confused? Ask away.

Peter Chung, Friday, 9 June 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

I find it amazing that I am talking to the actual creator of Aeon Flux. Now don't get me wrong, I am not in awe of the whole celebrity culture but to have such open access to the creator of well...any famous artistic creation is no small thing. Of course this is the power of the internet. I will spend some time with the series and with the forum discussions before i waste your time with questions. However, one the my favorite things you said was that offering too much explaination defeats the purpose of the series (and I believe of art itself). I thank you for your work. Jennifer. PS. Mark, rock on!
