i should maybe sign up with ysi to share stuff, no? i never get around to it but i imagine i'd have some stuff dudes would want (tho i still can't burn vinyl, dammit). what does the riaa think about ysi?

listening to the wakhevitch now, it rules. milton parker you're my hero!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 04:22 (nineteen years ago) link

you don't have to sign up for ysi. you just have to have the mp3 on your hard drive.

ah i see. i need to put more stuff on my hd here at home (i've got a lot of stuff at work, including some ultra-rare stuff like laughing hyenas demos and whatnot).

tell me more about wakhevitch.

Caroliner - Burdensome Blood (from Rise of the Common Woodpile, 1990)

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 26 August 2005 04:49 (nineteen years ago) link

shit jon, i thought you had that album. i've got the box set. i think searching the web for it was how i actually first found ILM. dominique wrote something about it (i think on the fork) and i emailed him twice accidentally searching for it. after finally getting it, i only really like one of the 5 albums.

JAXON (jaxon), Friday, 26 August 2005 04:54 (nineteen years ago) link

"rise of the common woodpile" is the only caroliner rec i have any more.

jaxon you wanna sell me that box?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 26 August 2005 04:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I've got the box too. I like "Hathor" & "Faust", and almost like the first track on "Let's Start", but you're right, a little goes a long way.

nice no neck track. trainspotting geek details & pitches welcome.

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:02 (nineteen years ago) link

pitches?

the nnck track is from the new record "The Collective Imaginings Of Quantarenius, Cook, & Co." which is one of the better things they've done in a while, imo.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:06 (nineteen years ago) link

milty what's your preferred method of burning tracks from vinyl?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:11 (nineteen years ago) link

joel, don't wanna sell it as it's kinda a cool thing to have, but i'd totally burn/rip you it.

JAXON (jaxon), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:17 (nineteen years ago) link

i'd like to hear it, if it's anything like that track. itunes sez i have another track, but can't find it.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:18 (nineteen years ago) link

milton & jax -- I have good tidings on the way. I know you must have yr doubts (BAD TRADER ALERT) but I will catch up on crap, hopefully this weekend. finally cleared some hard drive space.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:21 (nineteen years ago) link

the album i love (Dr Faust) is totaly different than that. it's dark orchestral rock. slow funky breaks, sabbathy guitars, weird horse noises, dudes talking in french. pretty freaky and super rad.

the more boring albums are just keyboard swooshes and bird noises with some creepy frenchy voices. they don't really go anywhere

JAXON (jaxon), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:21 (nineteen years ago) link

thanks rob. you listen to any of the stuff i gave you yet? that buffalo is pretty rad. the first song's ok, but the rest is the f-ing biz

JAXON (jaxon), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:22 (nineteen years ago) link

see that sounds rad to me. maybe i'm just boring. : (

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:25 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah Jax, the Supersilent is pretty wonderful -- kind of how I thought they might sound but I wasn't sure. They definitely push the right buttons. And the July I just rocked out to last night before heading out -- even better than I remember! Totally great record!
slowly making my way through...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:31 (nineteen years ago) link

it's true, the igor track I posted is the only track even remotely like that on all six discs. it's a very expensive box with a lot of mild stuff on it, but once you trim down to 'hathor' and 'faust' you're happy

good news stormy!

for transfers, turntable > EQ > amp, as loud as possible into the computer, no secrets. sometimes a little L2 limiting, sometimes I draw out the really nasty crackles, the Waves Restoration kit is helpful but I enjoy a little noise on my transfers.

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:35 (nineteen years ago) link

uh... i'm assuming you're running it into a fancy pants protools box?

http://we.tl/jdjuIRC20g

transferred last night from 1/4" tape by my good friend velma wallenrod

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 19:39 (ten years ago) link

Costing around $6000-$10,000, the Scalatron was an expensive and unusual instrument. Less than 20 Scalatrons were ever made (including only 2 Secor versions). The Scalatron came with a black and white monitor to adjust each key’s pitch (using Motorola’s TV tuning technology) – a split screen showed horizontal bars representing true pitch on the left side and the instruments variable pitch on the right side, and, for an additional $1000 a cassette interface was added with a number of tuning ‘programmes’. George Secor toured with the instrument playing works by Harry Partch (who also used the instrument towards the end of his life) and Ben Johnston. The Scalatron is still much in favour – though very hard to find – by microtonal composers and was used on several albums by Jon Hassell, most notably ‘Vernal Equinox’.

“Finally they invented what I needed–forty years too late.”

how are mp3s available only to specific territories? are they 'imported'??

they just don't have the rights. Possibly the label licensed digital distro rights for other territories to other retailers, or that label only has UK rights to sell.

I’ve been drinking deep from that source for a few weeks now. Mostly classical. There are some staggering finds in there. Transfer quality is all over the place. Everything from pro-amateur to “the lp started skipping and I didn’t notice for 8 minutes but fuck it”. The Boston Public Library sub-collection seems to all be pretty well done but only about half of those are downloadable.
