my jazz professor from last semester was good friends with lester bowie from art ensemble of chicago and told us stories about having lots of acid secretly slipped into his tea by members of the grateful dead while on a train between tour stops in canada and him and lester getting kicked out of dallas by the cops and told never to go back there again.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

yesterday my current philosophy professor was talking about how he graded our papers and he used the words "A-ness", "B-ness", etc. everybody laughed because they thought he said, "anus"! roffleeeeeee.

also my number theory professor thinks math problems are really funny. he also has the wildest hair i've ever seen and says things like "BALDERDASH!"

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

my english professor had us read goodnight moon on the floor of the school's art gallery. plus, he turned me on to don delillo. and he threw a chair against the wall once. and i hung out at his house once and listened to iron butterfly with him. and he had the coolest thickest glasses i have ever seen. he must have been really blind. plus, he had the coolest name: Dr. Herbert S. Guggenheim. Plus, he was nice enough not to tell me that my poetry sucked. actually, he might have saved me some time there.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

MY HAND OH MY GOD MY HAND!=ART

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 13 January 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

my drawing teacher would read us stories from james joyce's "dubliners" while we were sketching. also if he walked passed you and didn't like the sketch you were working on, he'd tear it off your easel in a flagrant gesture and say, "start again." also he had bright orange scarves which he would wear indoors.

"MY HAND OH MY GOD MY HAND!=ART"

is this a ref to pauline?

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/4.07/srl.html?pg=3&topic=

"The show officially starts at 11. I go out to join the line at the ticket door and eavesdrop. (No doubt I could pitch in with the crew if I wanted, but I'm a novelist by trade - I could cut my thumb off slicing a bagel.) The clean cut college kid in front of me is talking to his friend. "Yeah, he blew his hand off and had some toes sewn on for fingers!" I've never read an article on SRL that failed to take note of Pauline's injured hand. His uninjured left hand is also quite remarkable, very sinewy and dexterous, a real craftsman's hand. His left hand is probably the best-looking thing about the guy."

his hand is no more a ref point than sebastian bach's big schlong, but alas... i still think big ass jet plane robots of death are fundamentally cool. perhaps as artistically revelant as a fireworks display choreographer, but i dunno... i think their pulse is as visceral as wolf eyes or something. it's like animal art. punk up the old spidey sense.

at very least, one less dude using his noggin to build machines of mass death.

which reminds me... anybody of the geeky persuasion ever read about that dude that rigged fog horns up as his amplification for an organ? he could be heard across the bay and had to wear some gigantic suit so he would die from his jams. i wish i didn't toss my old wired mags.... oh, wait, there they are... fuck, i'm not gonna read through all that... HOW-TO: google meat.net?

My Film Sound professor once berated another teacher for daring to ask if she would turn down the tape of Apocalypse Now we were watching at peak volume in class.
I fell in love.

Dumbass redneck heshers.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 15 January 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

Dary-John Mizelle was a professor of mine in college, and was something of a mentor to me and several of my friends. I actually had the honor of playing a gig with him a few years ago. For those that don't know, he studied with Stockhausen and is most famous for his day-long avant garde pieces. He also appeared on the first Tower Recordings album.

Another great music teacher I had was Jim McElwaine, who wrote both the Muppet Babies theme song and the 'we do chicken right' jungle for KFC, along with many more impressive production /writing credits on some kool as hell disco records.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 15 January 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

Awesome Welles (nordicskilla), Saturday, 15 January 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)
