one time my downstairs neighbors had a party which was attended by a bunch of non-campus inner city gangstas. there was one fire alarm at approx. 1 am, caused by smoking, during which i made friends with one of the gangstas (he was wearing a blue velour tracksuit and gold jewelry) and watched his buddies urinate on our building. at 5:30 am, we had another fire alarm caused by someone being pushed into the fire alarm thing and breaking the glass during a GANG FIGHT. when i came downstairs there was someone speeding away in a car. a few days later i had to describe my velour tracksuited friend to the police, sorry big guy. the moral of the story is that sometimes when your neighbors are loud, an adventure happens.

i'm usually pretty tolerant but one apt building i was in had a load of undergrads who would blast music, and people would be (loudly) coming and going from their apartment and hanging out outside (climbing the walls of the apt building and throwing baseballs through people's windows) until ... 4 or 5 AM. that's fucking unreasonable. and yet i just sort politely ran downstairs in my pjs to ask them to keep it down. what a dork. eventually we called the cops.

their whole issue with jon is so moronic... it's like that thing where if your sister dies you should get all a's in school that year. why must the whole world walk on eggshells around you when there are terrible things happening to millions of people every day that don't get the same news coverage?

tehresa (tehresa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:10 (nineteen years ago) link

there were a small handful of things on ilx that gave me some pause as far as online 'behavior' in the wake of the bombings, but jon's wasn't one of them, not sure why it's a big thing, since it was a subject that had nothing to do with the events!

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought adam was from scotland?

no tech! (ex machina), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, I don't know. A girl whom we know is probably dead and so a lot of us are kind of bummed out about it. I can't help but think about it differently than the other "terrible things" not on the news - that is my home city and that bus blew up only a few meters from where I used to eat lunch every day. So it is different, for ME and others like me.

But YOU can do and say as you please, of course. I'm not going to be the one to dictate your behaviours or reactions. I just hope you'll understand if I seem a bit fragile, I would certainly accord you the same courtesy were I aware that you felt this way. All this said, I think Jon did in fact express condolences of a sort on ILE and everyone is overreacting.

I didn't say anything in any of the threads because anything I don't have any special insight into the situation. Obviously, I feel that its very sad and I feel compassion for people dealing with this, but I would feel a little crass to presume that something so immediate would be wanted from a bunch of internet strangers I don't know very well.
