late '70s US punk, who used ARP Oddyssey & Fender Rhodes piano instead of guitar & bass. Supposedly awesome, but they never recorded much at all. There is a live DVD available:

Anyone want to tell me more about them?

There's a 2CD thing that I like a lot. It's in New Orleans so I dunno what it's called but it's got a really ugly cover. From what I can tell (the sound quality is terrible) they sound like what I'd like Suicide to sound like.

The singer, Tomata Du Plenty, died a couple years ago but did a really interesting two-part interview with Jack Rabid that's worth searching out.

Here's a thing I wrote like four years ago on LA punk that has a bit on the Screamers. I would definitely rewrite parts of this article if I were doing it now and be less dogmatic about "THIS IS NO WAVE," but I think some of the gist of this thing is OK.

Seriously cringing at my use of term "expressionist atonality" in this thing - sorry.

The CD is on Xeroid Records

and comes in and out of print. The DVD is likely from the video Target Video released which I have and is great. Some of the songs on the bootlegs come from the video, but on CD you can't watch Tomata Du Plenty wearing rubber yellow overalls. They were huge and hugely influential, everyone on the cali scene talks about them starting it all, check out a few moments in the Punk Attitude documentary or whatever it's called.

Tomata was previously a member of the San Francisco drag group the Cockettes which also featured Sylvester at some point. I wonder if they knew each other? Divine and John Waters also were involved with the Cockettes. There was a movie made about them a few years ago.
