the only music i can tolerate when i go to sleep is reinebert de leuwe's erik satie piano music. everything else scares me.

i can fall asleep to almost anything

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

satie and certain feldman are kinda perfect...the thing with most shoegaze and even drone is the lack of space. personally i need the space to fall off. quiet musics which suspend in time allow for your mind to acclimate to that time-space, which is closer to sleep-like paterns. drone and raga, which tend to b construed as sleepy, are more meditative in the completeness. i just dont get people that would argue that reich, niblock, young, nath, or anyone in that variety of minimalism are sleepy when they are rather evidently maximal in their effect. same to be said for eno, quite often. i find eno to be more coloring than anything.

all of that, imo, is no good for sleep. they make create an intense environment that can cut out a variety of stimuli and be rather medatative, but that is different from the slow expansion into calm that is a sleep state.

think about finnegans wake and its timing and consider how yr thoughts get when yr sitting in bed reading and passing out...music should work like that

my roommate when i was living in ithaca again in 2000 was into all that brainwave stuff. but i dont think he ever really found anything that worked, including his own experiments.

i've been obsessed with this since i was in high school, given ive had terrible insomnia since i was about 8.
killy, tell me abbout this de leuwe.

i eveidently fell asleep on friday night with joanna newsoms new one on (repeat)...in a dream, i entered some weird dorm/institution after waiting in a line full of bleeding people (i think i was escorting a freind who had somehow bludgened herself). i went to some sort of bathroom to wash blood from my hands to find killy in a lobby entertaining people with joanna newsom impressions...everyone seem to find this all very funny. i woke up confused and turned it the fuck off. not sleeping music.

bb (bbrz), Monday, 11 September 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

i love waking up confused, its like a gravity bong hit without the stonedness. z*fs Digilogue is very good for this

Seth Nehil/JGrzinich - Gyre

This is the third release by the duo made up of Nehil (out of Portland, Oregon) and Grzinich (by way of Estonia) though it’s the first to cross my ears. Wish I’d heard them sooner. Loosely speaking, they make field recordings and then process them to a greater or lesser extent in the studio, creating a set of music that ends up, not surprisingly, somewhere in between, the forceful surge of a designed arc tempered by the beautifully random sounds of the natural and manmade acoustic world.

“Gyre” implies circling, an ambit of some kind. The best parts here orbit around the listener, never quite providing a steady handhold but always enticing one in deeper. A strong recording, well worth hearing.

exrpted review from bagatellen

harrumph://www.sendspace.com/file/x8ek9w

ive been listening to more drone processed stuff again recently and its worked ok for the sleepy. (though i was told something was 'unsettling' when i turned the stereo on yesterday am to try and get back to sleep after waking at 5 for no good reason...perhaps whats sleepy to me is less comforting to others). i do have a collection of japanese composers on sony japan which is very slow and beatiful, but i know nothing about it. if any nycers have means to rip from vinyl id happily share...
