Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 15 September 2006 05:48 (nineteen years ago)

jb,

don't know if you have an answer to this or why you even would, but i was wondering, does anybody actually read those "thread connections" threads and take note of every amusing juxtaposition on the ile new answers page?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 15 September 2006 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

no they played a "set" ("begin the begin", "so. central rain", "it's the end of the world as we know it (and i feel fine)") at this thing at the 40 watt. they've been all over the place lately and athens has been kinda warmer than normal to them than usual. the other night i was in five points and i was gonna read, smoke, kill some time but it was packed so i'm walking back to my car and muttering angrily like popeye and i stop at this nice restaurant 'five and ten' and i'm looking at the menu in the little window thing next to door (you know what i mean) and thinking "hmm, low country boil - haven't had that in awhile" and "wow - 29 bucks for a steak, bet it's good" when bill berry walks up and pats me on the back and says "you can't go wrong!". i think maybe he owns the place. then the next night it's kanye twittytime and it went well, i didn't pander to the crowd at all really (no britpop for instance, i did have a coldcut request i was unable to fulfill)(i played alot of bonde do role which is sorta pandering but i like it so fuck it), cute girls - the night was a "success" you can ask jena he was there - and then it got really packed and yup there's rem and then first bum note of the night i'm "spinning" 'no bulbs' by the fall cuz it's long and i needed a smoke and you can't smoke in bars in athens and i'm smoking and i see mills say something to tom and then tom asks me "hey can you play something else" so bummerz what a comedown so i think i ended up playing that 'spank' song? and it was really late at that point and i had to work at 7:30 the next morning and the crowd was kinda old by this point so i let tom "take over" ( = hello blondie!) and split. tonight i sang "cabaret" to a crowd of germans at karaoke at the same bar. athens ga inside/out.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 15 September 2006 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

i don't read those thread connections threads. my hunch is the answer to yr question though is 'trayce'. also you get free drinks when you "dj" so i'm TOTALLY doing that again.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 15 September 2006 06:10 (nineteen years ago)

that's what it's all about. don't settle for "staff prices"

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 15 September 2006 06:10 (nineteen years ago)

blount, what was your worst dj experience?

gear (gear), Friday, 15 September 2006 06:14 (nineteen years ago)

this is only the second time i've done it, it's just mp3's and cds so it ain't remotely real djing (definitely close enough in athens), i djed a going away thing for ilxor doctor casino and it went alright but not nearly as well - i totally pandered (this girl brought a spank rock cd that kinda saved my ass even if i felt a lil whorish) but i didn't really have as much pop at my fingertips as i thought, i was looking at my mp3 players and realizing 'wow, all this pearls before swine probably ain't gonna fly' plus the crowd wasn't feeling my 'everybody let's just dance to krautrock' "vibe" i was trying to get going (i had a 'hypnotize' into 'vitamin c' segue i was pretty pleased with go totally underappreciated), i played 'later in the evening' and was informed you 'can't dance to it' (it's a fucking conga!), i was informed missy elliot sounds 'too european' (maybe so!), gah, and then casino (who's a total bro and everything we're down if you read this) was harping on some choices and what was his alternative suggestion? tom petty! plus i was fucking up like crazy.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 15 September 2006 06:29 (nineteen years ago)

o no wait! my worst dj experience was when i was djing the 8th grade dance (the controversially titled "def dance '89") and i let a friend take over so i could slow dance and he cut out of 'patience' before the coda (cuz he 'didn't know')!!! so i jumped back on stage and chewed him out and told him if he 'didn't know' then he shouldn't have fucking volunteered himself for it and made me look like a goddamn fool in front of 4MY 4NDREWS! o and these dudes i rode the bus with kept pestering me to play some metallica or slayer so i finally caved and played 'the shortest straw'. that might be my best dj experience though.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 15 September 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

i DJed some halloween party last year for these three girls (knew one well, met another once, the third i'd never met) in exchange for 3 12 packs of guinness draught (like heroin to me) and i ran my set by them ahead of time: danceable 80s shit, spooky rock shit, hip hop. they were like, 'ok sounds great!' i show up and things are going okay but after about 30 minutes the crowd starts really showing up. most of them were still in college, wanted to hear nothing but what was two weeks fresh, i had like seventeen separate requests for "the ass and titties song". at one point one of the girls who lived there, after i hauled all my shit down, asked me to put on a CD she'd made. i asked her what song, she said, "oh just play the whole thing!"

i brought my laptop as a backup and busted out two hours of west coast hip hop (a few dudes were giving me static for playing east coast/southern rap!). and i almost got in a fight with a guy dressed like ozzy osbourne because he was giving me looks during song transitions, and another guy who looked like nomar because he fucked around with my laptop. they asked me to do it again this year, i feigned equipment malfunction.

gear (gear), Friday, 15 September 2006 06:36 (nineteen years ago)

i kinda wish i had a laptop, jena "spins" minimal at this same bar on mondays on his laptop and it's alot smoother and looks maybe easier? it would definitely make it easier for me to organize and remember afterwards what i actually played.

j blount (papa la bas), Friday, 15 September 2006 06:47 (nineteen years ago)

when i'm djing to get the crowd moving, dance music and techno and disco, i always bring the laptop, even if just in the aforementioned 'in case of emergency break glass' capacity. i wish my vinyl collection was such that it would allow for flawless, crowd-shaking sets, but it's not big enough. too much of everything, not enough of one single thing.

We used cassette tapes at my junior high dances. I would sit up all the night before, cueing up my expansive collection of GnR, Tone Loc, and Violent Femmes tapes. But for slow dances that I wanted to slow dance to, I would record the slow song (i.e. Kix' "Don't Close Your Eyes") onto a seperate tape, record myself introducing the next song, and then the next song. That way, I wouldn't have to worry about getting back to the stage before the song finished or having one of my friends putting their damn monkey paws over my tape deck PA.

I did play "Black Dog" b/w "Holidays In the Sun" once. No one danced, but we all remembered it.

Franiepoo
the thing about this is that the house the were recording was an actuall house but a week before they started filming the fathers son died that day in the same house.does that make sense i mean it was in the news about the boy found dead

djleehoward
The ghost is of the Directors son who fell out of that window whilst filming one day. The reason he is not on the film which was actually released is because when the director saw it he recognised it to be his son and he had a breakdown and they filmed the scene again but in a studio. This is ginuine!

PappaWheelie
I can't believe people are still debating this.

the uh "literature" on this urban legend says it was filmed on a soundstage. did your aunt live on a soundstage?

it's really a cardboard cutout of the actor in that film.

videos818 (2 months ago)
That's what the studio would like you to believe. I think it makes more sense that it was a ghost.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 16 September 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

Why does that make *more* sense than it being a cardboard cutout of Ted Danson?
