this one will do.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

i mean, CHRIST, people, you're not gunna get better than giraffes on top of the Namco building

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Sunday, 18 September 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

I _need_ both the game and the music to be a treat. I need this.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 18 September 2005 07:09 (twenty years ago)

the original KD never came out in PAL territories. god I hope this is getting a conversion.

deaf leopard (haitch), Sunday, 18 September 2005 07:22 (twenty years ago)

There are three games stores in my neighborhood. I went to every single one and asked if they planned to carry I ♥ Katamari, and none of them had any clue what I was talking about, nor were they aware of the original Katamari Damashi. It was pretty upsetting.

I'll obviously find another way to get it, and then gladly give my life over to it. I haven't been this keyed up for a game in a long time. I am excited for the underwater and snow levels. I am excited for the music. I am excited for the two-player cooperative mode.

This is going to rule.

Laura H. (laurah), Sunday, 18 September 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

By "I ♥ Katamari" I mean of course "We ♥ Katamari."

Laura H. (laurah), Sunday, 18 September 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

omg omg omg omg

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 18 September 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

ARGH MY PS2 IS IN NEW ORLEANS. THIS IS CRAPPY. Are the Katamari DS rumors ever going to come true?

adam (adam), Sunday, 18 September 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Electronic Arts today announced plans to co-publish Namco’s We Love Katamari throughout PAL territories for the PlayStation 2.

yessssss!

Slated for an early 2006 release

boooooo!

deaf leopard (haitch), Sunday, 18 September 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

This is cool enough that it may deserve its own thread BUT:
Japanese magazine scan of Katamari Damacy for PSP with Wifi battle mode.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 18 September 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

ALL RIGHT.

adam (adam), Sunday, 18 September 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Wait, is this out today? I thought it was tomorrow... someone let me know so that I can organize my afternoon around finding a copy if needs be.

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 19 September 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

new games usually hit on tuesdays, same day as records.

Tho there's probably a big box or a costco somewhere who've broken the release day agreements...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 19 September 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

My bad, it's released tuesday supposedly.
The guy at EB wouldn't let me have it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 September 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

get your knife

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

The tremendous asshole at EB was all like "Look dude, if it RELEASES on tuesday then we can't very well HAVE it on Tuesday" and I was like "Uh, I understand the concept, but you very well COULD have it in on Tuesday night, right?" "NO, it SHIPS on TUESDAY" and then I had to leave rather than yelling at him and now I have to go to a different store to buy the damn thing.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

The whole Tuesday thing is ridiculous. Halo or Madden they'll have *on Tuesday*. Anything good comes in on Wednesday whenever the UPS guy gets there. That sucks when one, say, takes off of work in order to play Phantom Brave all day and the UPS guy shows up at one's local EB at like 2PM. Fucker.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

I kind of can't believe I just admitted to taking off of work to play Phantom Brave.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, this is total BS. I went to three game stores today, and no dice. Should be in early afternoon most places tomorrow. I'm going to go into the city around 1 and just do rounds until one of them sells me a copy.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Phantom Brave.

which one's this?

Actually, i can truthfully say that I've never taken off work to play a just-released game. I've skipped rock shows, sure, but never work.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

wait, THIS one?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

I had a crazy day and was only able to stop by one store (and it was circuit city, argh)--not only did they not have it, the one person who knew what it was said he didn't think it was coming out for another month. I think I'll call ahead tomorrow.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

say, that reminds me

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Re: Phantom Brave. It's a Nippon Ichi strategy/rpg. Wildly addictive but nowhere near as good as its predecessor, Disgaea. The latest one, Makai Kingdom, is sitting--shrinkwrapped and with the beautiful Double Jump Books strategy guide--on my bookshelf next to my PS2 waiting to be played. In New Orleans. Argh.

I'm sorry, I'll stop derailing now. Please everyone get the new Katamari game and play it and YSI the soundtrack and I will roll stuff up vicariously through y'all.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

not only did they not have it, the one person who knew what it was said he didn't think it was coming out for another month.

Which games store had the most obviously stoned employees?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

I reserved mine two months ago (yes I am a saddo) and got a call this afternoon saying it'd be in the store tomorrow afternoon. And me with two whole weeks at home right now. YES YES YES YES ROLL YOU UP INTO MY LIFE

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

ya know, i have yet to play KD

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

GET THEE TO A GAME STORE!!! You could buy both of them tomorrow and bask in the katamari.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

Kingfish, it's twenty bucks for the first one and one of my favorite gaming experiences period.
Totally worth it. And the Music. THE MUSIC!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

i don't have a ps2 anymore. i sold it to Aaron W, which i hope is currently distracted by it in law school.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

I can get it today, if I want it

in SCOTLAND

(but I don't have swap magic or a chipped PS2 : /)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

I have never played katamari either

: /

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 07:32 (twenty years ago)

ok my local gamestop will have it in around 1 today.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

haha it's in my hands! see you next week doods!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

I just got it! It's pretty much exactly what I expected. I just played the underwater level, the flower level, and this cool level where you have to roll a fiery katamari and keep picking stuff up so it doesn't go out. Me likee.

Laura H. (laurah), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Fuck you people!!

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 21 September 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm with Tom here.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm headed home with it and will be playing it shortly after I watch the tape on Lost. I'm giddy!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 22 September 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

It just keeps getting better.

Flowers.
Fireflies.

Snowmen.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 22 September 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

Snowmen!

the band yes?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 22 September 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

One level in. God I need to play hooky.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

how does the two player co-operative work? is it frustrating or brilliant? brilliant in this case may involve lots of shouting at your partner and reaching over to pirate their controls.

SO EXCITED for this

metonymus prime (rgeary), Friday, 23 September 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Fucker's SOLD OUT all across the land apparently. I am dead pissed off by this.

TOMBOT, Friday, 23 September 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

well, how's the game?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 23 September 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

It's really nice. The music is great. I'm a bit stuck on the grandma level (12m in 12min) but it lets you go and do plenty of other stuff so you don't get frustrated. There is so much stuff to roll up! like more than I expected!

teeny (teeny), Friday, 23 September 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

It's nicely improved in a couple of different ways:
First, they allow a cutaway view if the camera swivels behind an obstruction (a see through hole is superimposed on the item obscuring your view, amusingly in the shape of a heart or a club or a baseball, etc.) and it's also MUCH harder to get stuck behind places, unless they're tactically trying to fuck with you; i.e. the game is INTENTIONALLY trapping you as opposed to simply having poor play mechanics. These two improvements alone are immediate bonuses but as has been said (many times already even) the boards are ridiculously cluttered. You can't help but notice how dense the pick-up-able items are and this leads to another major improvement in gameplay: the first time you play a stage it's a "make the katamari X size in X time" setup. When you beat that stage, the next time it's a "rollup X size as fast as you can". Once you play the second iteration through, the game allows you to pick your poison. This is brilliant as it allows players to enjoy the game as either a goal oriented spectacle or as a relaxed, let's explore method. As such, my girl can gallivant and see all the new stuff (there are hardly ANY character models reused from the first game, maybe the crab and a dog or two, which is amazing considering how much crap there is) or I can frantically find the best paths to roll up stuff in the proper order... And as regards the second method, there ARE very interestingly laid out paths to roll up at the max speed. This was sorta developed in the first game but it's very clearly part of the programming now and discovering a small stuff path that becomes a slightly larger stuff path just as you "evolve" is thrilling. Figure out what the invisible road is and you get the best possible accolades from the King of the Cosmos and a better planet.

There's dozens of cute additions to the first one: my favorite is a spinning jackpot at the end of the stage that you can play over and over again that shows you the relative size of your katamari to (spin)hairpins (24,568); (spin) fire hydrants (1.3); candy bars (354), etc. The game assumes you're a fan.

In the PVP mode (haven't found cooperative yet) there's a nice sense of variation as the game gives you different play modes along the lines of a timed capture the flag and get select objects in addition to the "roll as big as you can" It also feels somehow easier on the eyes.

The soundtrack is as good as ever; I've found one misfire but by and large it's obsessive and catchy and I'm really looking forward to listening to it over and over. (There's a Dokaka song on there (I double checked); anybody else catch it?)

I'll start a new thread with some hosted songs shortly. For now I'm gonna go play.

rio natsume, Saturday, 24 September 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

EB @ Pentagon City got in a shipment just this afternoon! I picked that up along with the $19.99 StarCraft Battle Chest because I'm REALLY, REALLY OLD and CHEAP. I wanted to get Riviera for the GBA but I couldn't justify that with all the other expenditures.

Anyway, I have it now. See you dudes Monday, probably, because I have to.

~~~~ DODONGO DISLIKES SMOKE ~~~~ (ex machina), Sunday, 25 September 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)
OK I have played all the stages, incl. the World Peace stage after the end, and I rate my top five thus:
1. Racing !!!!!(why the hell can't you play this stage in versus mode)
2. Underwater
3. Zoo
4. School
5. Solar System just because FUCKING TRIPPY OK I HAD A DREAM ABOUT IT
And of course always at the bottom, completely pisses me off without fail, just like last time: Cow/Bear Stage. Fuck that stage in the eye. Last time before I gave up on being any good at it I got actually decently big, like 2m or so, and then rolled over the cousin that has the spotted cow/dalmation outfit. Unbelievable bullshit.
I am holding off on looking at GameFAQs etc. in the hopes that I can find a decent amount of the easter eggs by myself. How do you get it to be nighttime in the Select Meadow? My favorite present is still the Giraffe Hat. Giraffe Hat RULES.
TOMBOT, Monday, 26 September 2005 14:51 (twenty years ago)
what's the Giraffe Hat look like?
kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 26 September 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)
Disappointingly still far too easy to work one's way through the entire game. Still fun, but why not more fun / more things to roll up? More?
Jeff LeVine (Jeff LeVine), Monday, 26 September 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)
ugh I haven't gotten to any cow/bear stage, I was hoping they learned from the first one how horrible those are.
I like the firefly stage too, it's so dreamy and lovely.
teeny (teeny), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)
is there ever any difference between playing any of the cousins?
teeny (teeny), Monday, 26 September 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)
Disappointingly still far too easy to work one's way through the entire game
The King bitched at me for finishing too quickly. Replay value on the vast majority of these stages is fantastic, though, I really hope I can get "unlimited" status on a few of them. I could play the racing and underwater stages a thousand times.
is there ever any difference between playing any of the cousins?
Some of them look more like vibrators than others.
TOMBOT, Monday, 26 September 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)
Anybody wanna peek in a faq and find out what the requirements are to unlock eternals?
Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)
I'm thinking there are no eternal stages this time around. Am I wrong? No mention while skimming the FAQ - but I did learn about the rose stage. I guess there's still a little more to do...
Jeff LeVine (Jeff LeVine), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)
Yeah, it would appear there are about 3 different "quests" or series of missions in this one, so clearing it and rolling up the sun once is not the same as making the moon at all. There's more replayability to this than I originally imagined, I figured all those dumb fans were yelling at me again just because I barely cleared their stage the first time around or something. I got a lot of work to do, damn.
People who write FAQs are all INSANE.
TOMBOT, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)
There sure were lots of cousins to find (39)! Unfortunately the final two stages getting 'em all opens, especially the rose stage, are real let downs. No way in hell I'm going to roll up a million roses just going in a circle on the ice - I'm guessing it would take forty or fifty hours if the level doesn't change after you've rolled up a certain amount, which I'm guessing it doesn't, because the game is crazy like that.
Jeff LeVine (Jeff LeVine), Saturday, 1 October 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)
that animal noises version of the tune is REALLY ANNOYING
zappi (joni), Sunday, 2 October 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)
picked up the japanese version of kirby DS for £10 too
zappi (joni), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)
are there any sites which people use to help them guide themselves round japanese text version of games?
cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)
I've see a couple of games on gamefaqs.com which have translations from the Japanese versions, but I think that's only with games like Vib Ribbon, Electroplankton et al, where the menus are really easy to get around and it's just a case of saying which button does what.
melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)
are vib ribbon and electroplankton worth picking up?
cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)
Both most definitely! Electroplankton's the only game I'm playing on the DS at the moment, it's very relaxing. Unfortunately, sometimes it's too relaxing, and the other night I fell asleep whilst playing it, only to find when I woke up that I didn't have time to put the pen back in the DS. Now I'm DS pen-less!
melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)
EP is pretty pricey
I'm really impressed with the DS so far, lots of quality titles
anyone had a chance to play castlevania DS yet?
sorry I know this is the katamari thread : /
cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)
Ahhh, that's a shame. Is it in a big shiny cardboard box? That one goes with a pair of earphones, so I guess that would explain the price.
I'm also very impressed with the DS - out of all my consoles it's probably the only one I feel some kind of warmth towards, as if it's living. This could be because of the touch screen, or it could just be that I'm slowly getting creepier and crazier. Do we not have a DS thread yet? We should!
melton mowbray (adr), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)
Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)
OK
this game is insane!
(g, I bought swap magic
I got KD to work but I had to go inside
SM supplies you with a 'slide tool'
you're supposed to use it to slide the tray out
it's never worked for me but I'm going to have to figure it out
going in and out of my ps2 with ease is fraying my nerves)
anyway yeah to reiterate this game is so insane
as good as I ever imagined!
cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)
I bought this last night and since I'm such a sweet sappy romantic, I bought a 2nd controller so that Sarah and I could play it together, but man, cooperative mode is HARD! Like, to turn, one person has to be walking forward and the other backward, so you have to plan it out.
two years pass...
Dear John,
We have removed Beautiful Katamari (cancelled) for Wii from your GameQ. There are two possible reasons for this removal:
(1) For released titles, we no longer carry the game and do not know if or when we will acquire new copies.
(2) For unreleased titles, the game has been cancelled by its publisher.
We apologize for any disappointment this may cause. If you have any questions, please contact us.
