The Minor Thirds, Saskatchewan.

Again.

For perhaps the fifth or sixth time since I've gotten the album.

I think I'll have to listen to some Duran, though, in celebration of the fact that I've actually been helpful to someone today! I answered some questions instead of asking them -- hurrah!

Hm. "New Moon On Monday", anyone?

And then I'll return to The Minor Thirds.

Again. ;)

Laurie Anderson - Big Science

And a tape with Magma's MDK and Yes' Close To the Edge.

Whenever I hear Laurie Anderson, I can't help but imagine that she's really annoying, and has a really cool apartment.
But knowing how these things work out, she's probably a nice lady (if a bit too focused on telling tedious stories about her work) who lives in a huge, boring house.

F'in TERRIFIC clean-up-the-house music, I tells ya - but whether vintage psych turns me on or not is often just a function of my mood at that particular moment. When I meet people whose main musical diet consists of obscure psych, I always feel like I'm communicating with an alien life-form whose method of listening is completely different from my own.

Half Japanese - Heaven Sent
MX-80 Sound - Big Hits EP
Pulp - His'n'Hers
Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers - Rock'n'Roll With The Modern Lovers
Tobin Sprout - Carnival Boy
Tall Dwarfs - 3 EPs
Angry Samoans - STP Not LSD

I'm actually getting rid of the Pulp, Richman and Tall Dwarfs albums (though tapin songs off the Pulp and Tall Dwarfs ones). I've just been going through my collection figuring out what's worth keeping. Those three ain't.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

whaddya mockin' in particular? Probably the Pulp album, which should really be titled Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. I like the singles but goddamn there's a lot of moments where even Bryan Ferry would probably tell Jarvis to chill.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

and that Richman album is easily the one where I most expect the next song to be named "I Made A Poo-Poo."

Yes the Pulp album, you scoffer, but also the Tall Dwarfs one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the Tall Dwarfs album has some terrific stuff on it (esp. "Senile Dementia," "Bee To Honey," "Highrise") but I only found 6 max of the 18 songs I could imagine really needing to hear again. Keep in mind I've got pretty much everything they've done through the Glue album. I'm trying to cut down!

I pop the Interpol first single (PDA/NYC/something) in for that a lot, too. The album got misplaced somewhere at work & haven't decided to replace it yet. Anyway, I'm listening to the neoshoegaze mix from Ned from last year's boston terrastock gathering. Musically, it's one of those compilation mixed CD-Rs, which has just gone from "Suzanne" by Moose (with obligatory upward motion for the volume control) to "Rock'n'roll woman" by Buffalo Springfield.

Pluramon's absolutely flattening "Dreams Top Rock" which currently I am almost convinced is the best album released by anyone since "Loveless." Also the forthcoming Lambchop double epic, Joss Stone "Soul Sessions" and the Dani Siciliano elpee. As well as the Soundmurder comp on Rephlex and Derek Bailey's new guitar and poetry album.

Dalek I Love You - s/t, 1983.

As I'm going straight from work to a gig (Muse - pah! The things you do for your godson...) I had to leave my CD walkman at home so resorted to my old tape walkman which hasn't been used in about five years, and this happened to be the tape in it, and bloody wonderful it is too. Those synthesised sitar sounds are SO 1983 (cf "Cinnamon Road", Tangerine Dream). "Ambition" sounds like FGTH, only a year too soon. What does it take to get this album on CD? Didn't the future sound promising once?

Another CD-R compilation of vaguely happy things to keep me awake on the train (which was 30 minutes late, may I add). Last track was "Celeste" by the Telescopes, next track appears to be "Tikky" by Insides. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up the Brighter singles collection today so that should be soundtracking the rest of the week in a glum wintry way.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 8 December 2003 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 8 December 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, is it any good?

The first track is essentially Boymerang with Bark Psychosis noises and I wasn't too sure about it, but after that it's quite good -- though I don't think great. Most of the album is instrumental and feels like an extension of Hex instead of something unique. That said, this was based on a first listen -- the more I hear it the more I'll probably love it.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 8 December 2003 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to the new Missy and Xtina's "Stripped".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

an unusual amount of pea-brained crap on the radio walking to work I heard the new Puddle Of Mudd, "Where Is The Love?" "Mo Money, Mo Problems." Heard "Milkshake" by Kelis for the first time today and TWICE. It's pleasant but still has the usual Neptunes Ween-like aftertaste I don't enjoy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 8 December 2003 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony, you are on crack. "Ween-like aftertaste"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 December 2003 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It always feels like theirs something really parodistically simple about Neptunes songs. "Milkshake" doesn't have it as much, and its more in the way Pharrell sings and in his lyrics. Like the Stevie Wonder homage on Justified with the line "you're out of this world except you're not green." It's like Ween with tighter beats and less fart noises.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 8 December 2003 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That New Hope kinda spooge.

As for me, Music for the Masses. Oh yeah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 December 2003 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

God help me, but I remember a Bel Biv Devoe interview where the interviewer asked them why their songs about women were so superficial. They cracked up and said "whaddya want? Oh girl, you're sooo smart? I love your big brain?"

And in Rolling Stone Pharrell commented about how girls like his songs because he tells girls they're smart.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 8 December 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

actually my last sentence contradicts my earlier sentiment about Neptunes seeming parodistic. It's more like the lyrics are so awkwardly simple that I PRAY that they're kidding.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 8 December 2003 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Fiery Furnaces - Gallowsbirds Bark
Breeders - Pod (hadn't listened to it in years, I still like it!)

Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic, The Fossil Record 1980-1987,
a selection of 'unreleased and obscure' stuff from 'the Roger Miller years'... I'd really forgotten I had this. At the back of a batch of other records. Must've been sitting there quietly for eight or nine years.
Now only "Slo-Boy" sounded familiar. The looongish and sans-their-usual-keyboards'cussion-motorik "To A Random", however, sounds surprisingly fine.

Right now I listen to: Lifesavas Spirit in Stone, which is a really REALLY friggin' good album that I can't believe I hadn't heard until now. But then I got the pleasure of hearing them for the first time in concert last night, and that's always a great way to discover something new-to-yourself.

the music improvisation company on ECM (LP). from 1970. this is really great (derek bailey, evan parker, jamie muir and hugh davies plus someone on vocals though I didn't hear much of that).

the company 5 on Incus (LP). the first side has derek with evan then braxton, steve lacy, tristan, george lewis, incredibly coherent for most part. This was my first listen so it took me a while to get into it but i got lots out of it.

she makes total honest-to-god fairy music, just singing and playing harp. she's from s.f. and devendra banhart told me to listen to her, uhhhh, so i did. it's totally elfin, totally twee, and it rules in a bjork-meets-jolie-holland-ish way.

most people i know would absolutely hate her music, that's why i just stuck it on the end of one of my "best of 2003" mixes!

All of which were for three minutes the most essential noize in the whole universe...* **

new dead C album?!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 2 January 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's called Damned and it was released in November.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 2 January 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ok thanks. I'll get this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm listening to Air's Moon Safari and stubbornly anticipating-and-not-downloading Talkie Walkie. "La Femme D'Argent" or whatever you call the first piece on here is one of my favorite pieces of music of all time.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Nate's 1982 comp. It's stupendous.

Woke up to Air's Talkie Walkie . "Cherry Blossom Girl" is incredibly beautiful. Hell, the entire album is a beaut.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 2 January 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Run" from Talkie Walkie is incredibly sexy! Especially that shaker sound.

with a thumping head full of snot at home:
the hiss - panic movement (difficult to pin down, some very good tracks though (the 'epic' ones), didn't do much good for the headache though)
patrick wolf - lycantrophy (hmmm. this could have been better, the strange stuff works better than the straightforward stuff)

then two aspirines, a cup of tea and:
matmos - the civil war (ah, that's better. what an incredible album. one of a kind. or not? if anyone has any suggestions for similar stuff then please... this is the first matmos release i've heard but i understand the older material is quite different, right?)

Terrified of what Bryan? How good it is....or how sad it is.

Chris V (Chris V), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

How sad it is. I picked it up because I found it used in Minneapolis yesterday (I was gonna wait and download it first but for $7 wtf) but I almost wish I hadn't. It'll be ok. It's just almost the last thing I need to be listening to these days.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Phoebe Dinsmore, Monday, 12 January 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

last night wasa multi-changer marathon of the first three disks of the ray charles 'genius & soul' box, all mark lanegan's solo albums, and all the Dexy's albums. This morning's walkman soundtrack en route to/from radio station was Deadly Snakes' 'ode to joy', sonic youth @ terrastock 2002 boootleg (though my walkman don't like CDRs and started to glitch really badly during 'Rain On Tin' worse luck), the bronx's debut LP, and Lightning Bolt's 'wonderful radio'. at the radio station i played deadly snakes' 'troubles gonna stay awhile', and was played 80s Matchbox's 'mister mental' and the new outkast single. now working on laptop back at home, Isley Brothers' '3x3', 'fight the power' and 'harvest for the world' all loaded up in the changer. Ho yeah.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 12 January 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

all mark lanegan's solo albums
great!

listening to Ode to Joy this weekend it completely underwhelmed (thank you Sloan) me until the last four songs or so when I thought "hey, that sounds great!". so i clearly must listen to the whole album at least one more time.

I found a great compilation double LP from Decca in the 2nd hand shop this weekend: Hard-Up Heroes. dating from 1974, it's an album collecting songs from 1963 to 1968 (compiled by NME's Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray. nice pictures dudes! :-) by Rod Stewart (with a great song from 1964- "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl". his "Thirteen"!), David Bowie (the fantastic "London Boys") and lesser known greats ("The Uncle Willie" by Zoot Money).

I'm guessing Fiuczynski's Headless Torsoes is the same group that I've heard under the name Screaming Headless Torsoes. I wonder if they go by that name only in America? Anyway, that there's a right awesome band.

As for me, my listening today has consisted of: Fela Kuti's Expensive Shit/He Miss Road & Original Sufferhead/ITT, Medeski Martin and Wood's The Dropper, and Godspeed You Black Emperor's Raise Yr Skinny Fists... and UXO.

Nick, I think the Headless Torsos dropped the 'Screaming' after the first lineup broke up. I've only heard that first album anyway.

Is that new Cee-Lo out? I thought it was next week, damn.

Today I listened to:

Mars Volta 'Live'
Timabalada 'Mae De Samba'
Daniel Freedman Trio, which is the freshest, most direct, and most fun jazz record I've heard in awhile.

A Nairn, thanks for inquiring. :-)
I really felt "Time Will Crawl", it was even better than I remembered it to be. "Never Let Me Down" was ok but could have been so much better I think. I mean, the verses are/sound like they fit in (=good) while I think the choruses are shite. A little more thought/time/effort and it would have been a great song. I also liked parts of "Zeroes" quite a lot. Not so bad an album overall, not good either.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

a bunch of stuff on CBC's Northern Lights programme. I remember an Ian McDougall clarinet concerto being nice.
Radiohead - Amnesiac

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I had myself a bastard of a cold the last two days, just as I finally wrapped up my big record collection reappraisal project (I fudged things so that I could end it with Donna Summer's On The Radio rather than what should have been the last album, Sonic Youth's NYC Ghosts And Flowers - yecch). So now I'm finally reacquainted for the first time in months with the joy of not having a single album that I "should" be listening to. I've been listening to Hot Snakes' Automatic Midnight A LOT. One of the few albums I have the tendency to play over and over.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 15 January 2004 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

A-band LP- this is TOTALLY great primitive folk-ish improv rec, and it seems to be where a lot of the sunburned hand of man stuff started from (nottingham 1991): very disjointed, breaking apart at times but it doesn't stop them. Gotta love those Italian pot noodle horror movie screams.
