extending from the Shall I buy an iPod thread...

What kind of headphones do you use with your portable and not so portable stereo equipment?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I have these:
http://www.interstage.dk/Sider/Produkter/Varegrupper/200/266-000/266-220-1.jpg
Sennheiser HD25, comfortable, compact, good sound quality, replaceable components, although in 4 years I've only had to replace the ear pads.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Good question. I want to buy me some (vaguely affordable?) audiophile-quality headphones for my iPod.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm looking for some `phone that are less intrusive/damaging to those of us with tinnittus, but that still produce decent sound quality. The obvious answer is that I shouldn't use headphones at all, but then again...smokers should stop smoking and alcoholics should stop drinking and junkies should stop using, etc. etc.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

At least for Home use, the Grado Labs SR-60 are my favorite...

Grado Labs website.

I've gotten complaints from my officemate that he can easily hear what's blasting through the phones if it's too loud, otherwise, (then again, I do often play music too loud in my headphones and should lower the volume). Otherwise, I'd recommend what Ed recommends, or a decent Sony pair.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

best thing about mine, is even on loudest volumes no one else can hear.
worst thing the high impedance means that that I can't crank the volume as high as I'd like with my iPod, probably saving my hearing though.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a pair of Koss Portapros last year on the recommendation of someone here on ILX and whenever this topic comes up I always have to mention them again, because they're really great. Their looks are really deceiving, they look like a pair of $5 throwaway headphones from the 80's or something, but the sound, including the bass, is really very good. And they're cheap, too. I got mine for $40, I think.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My audiophile next door neighbor was singing the praises of Koss too.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Philips Clarity XL are what I use, probably the best you'll get on a budget.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

With my MD portable, a pair of Sony EX-71LPs - an ear-canal design with very low leakage and high insulation. Trouble is, one of the three differently-sized pairs of supplied silicone earbuds *has* to fit yr lugholes perfectly otherwise you don't get correct bass response. Hence, wildly different reviews all over the web. They were a replacement for my EX-70LPs (bought in '99), which my missus has commandeered (she did buy me the '71s, tho'), and which I suspect were a bit softer-sounding.

At home, Grado SR-125s (bought in '98) with the larger replacement earpads which *finally* make them comfortable for long-term use as well as stellar sounding. Also, a pair of Sennheiser Vegas (1994) which tend thesedays to get most use as performer headphones when overdubbing - but, to be honest, they're less comfortable than the Grados, duff sounding and very leaky. If I was capable of catching the attention of the staff in Turnkey for more than a millisecond I'd have bought a pair of AKG K66s by now instead.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I looked, the Sony EX-71LPs were discontinued and only available reconditioned (yeach, I think).

Apple are now selling similar looking ones (but, white duh) - see my post on the iPod thread.

Make sure you get lowish impedence ones for an iPod as they don't give out a high signal even on top volume.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

In the ear panasonic ones, they were fourteen quid.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I looked, the Sony EX-71LPs were discontinued and only available reconditioned (yeach, I think).

Ugh, indeed. Mind you, you tried mine, which means you've got the lurgy. Or something. I thought the '71s were relatively new. Oh, well.

Of course, the headphones I wear the most are - duh - the ones strapped to my head for 6-7 hours a day at work. Panasonic something-or-other, closed-back, circumaural, fairly rubbish.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

http://bssc.sel.sony.com/Professional/images/product/front_zoom/mdr7506_z.jpg

Granted, they're a bit overkill

ModJ (ModJ), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Shure E2s for noisy commute to work...they block out most external noise and don't play whatever you're listening to for the person in the next seat.

mmmmsalt (Graeme), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I trust your earwax, Mike.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I work with a fellow who has been using that Sony model above for probably ten years. Ten years of broadcasting for seven to eight hours a day, and all the putting-on and taking-off of headphones that that implies. So they're certainly durable. I also know people who have been using Koss for 10-20 years.

I hate all the sonys though due to their excessive emphasis on the highs. (Men, in particular those who are past their 20s or have some hearing damage, may like the highs punched up since that's what you lose first.) Sennheisers are less durable (I've probably gone through a set every year or two) but nothing beats their presence.

Tinnitis sufferers, does a certain frequency set exacerbate your condition?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

That big black cord is kind of unsettling.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM threads on this topic:

Best headphones for portable cd player?
Headphones. For walking around in.
Need Decent Headphones (OT?)

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Sony EX-71LP seem like they are available but other people have had trouble getting them too. You can get these Sony MDR-EX71SLs, which look similar to the LPs - any good, does anyone know?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, ha ha - come to think of it, mine are EX71SLs after all. Short cord with an extension cable. "Ear gaskets"? How quaint.

The short cable is fine if yr in-line remote is close to yr head (i.e. clipped to a shirt pocket). I've yet to find myself in a situation where using the extension wouldn't just lead to Beanesque fumbling and calamity.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh - so maybe SL just stands for 'short lead' ha ha.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

You've just hit on another bugbear of mine - inline remotes. I can never get to grips with them. I think I must take my clothes on and off too much.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I jab connecting wires into my brain. I mock you fleshists.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

For walking-around, I don't think the PortaPros can be beat, esp. at the price. They let in enough sound to keep you from getting run over, but not enough in normal use to be distracting (but I don't live in a big city or ride a bus or anything).

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I ordered these from Japan:

Audio-Technica ATH-A500
http://image.www.rakuten.co.jp/tantan/img1055890466.jpeg
some of the best money I've ever spent.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

those are sexy

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

they're gigantic!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I looked at yours, but I needed closed cans for the office.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

they're really comfy too

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

phil your headphones look the size of a jumbo jet (the biggest thing I could think of!)

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, mine are even bigger!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I am in the market fr a pair of headphones. how much did they cost, spencer (I have a big head, I could pull them off)? I'm leaning towards porta-pros mind.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been hearing great reports about these... anyone tried them?

Paul Eater (eater), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I highly recommend the site head-fi.org for anyone looking for headphones.

Mine were about $110 shipped (it only took 3 days!). Porta Pros are completely different. The A500s don't actually really clamp onto your head so they're not for walking/running around.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Paul, I haven't heard anything about those. Check head-fi for reviews.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm still loving my porta pros, the bass is fantastic. as is the way they fold up, which always takes people by surprise.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 3 March 2005 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

They're very highly rated, but they do leak a lot of sound.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 March 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

this is topical for me. i bought a pair of sennheiser px100s to use with my ipod only yesterday! they are pretty good i reckon for a cheap portable set. they're collapsible so no breakage in your bag. i got them for $80 AUD. down from $100 for flirting with the sales dude!! go me.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

oh, there is leakage with the koss portapros:(

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

do you not wear in-ear phones?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

no, i've never tried those. i have some, er, jvc ones i think. they are big overear things, they're the only ones i've ever had. but they're almost done

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Especially designed for the ipod. It costs 149 euros. WTF!

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

i only use headphones on the tube or train. i'm not sure about those in-ear ones, they look like they might fall out.

i think its important that my fellow drones and commuters don't have to listen to sol hoopii in the morning

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

i hate in-ear phones! i like big chunky headphones

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

i think its important that my fellow drones and commuters don't have to listen to sol hoopii in the morning

Sounds like you need closed-back ones, gareth. I had the closed-back Sennheiser PX-200s and was very happy with them till I stood on them and ruined the headphone jack (now get one channel only, oops). They barely let any sound in or out. So watch out when you cross the road.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

i second the px-200s, they are very well isolated (at least compared to the super noisy sennheiser hd 495 cans i use in winter because they double as ear warmers)

Yawn (Wintermute), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

ah, i was just looking at those. and also these sennheiser hd202s as well.

or i might go look for my existing headphones and just get a new set of those if they still make them

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

The px-200s looks stupid if you are bald. You know, just in case you go bald over the next few months. They are good though.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 22 December 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

My ear canal Sonys broke, but I glued them back together again.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 22 December 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

i got some ballin' ass phones for my lady from hmv -- £20 there, £30 in dixons.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 22 December 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

My work ones are Panasonic RP-HT225s. They are shit, but I am past caring.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 22 December 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

x-post Does she know of your headphone bumsex fantasies?

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 22 December 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

I switched at work from Sennheiser HD457s to HD202s, mostly because the jack on the former was bent and getting stereo (or two-channel mono) was a lottery. The 202s are more comfy and block out the panicky chatter of my overworked colleagues very well. Add a look of furious concentration and I can get away with not being bothered for stretches of five or six minutes at a time.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 22 December 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

How is there a headphone thread on ILX that I have no posted on?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 22 December 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Excellent, I had pretty much decided on the foldable Koss pair, now I can spend my money in peace and not research eight hundred things anymore. THANK YOU, ILX.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah; I swear by my portapros but they are v.v.leaky

can make you feel a little self-conscious; if you're that type

the looks you get tho, haha!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

I had a german guy come up to me in starbucks and ask 'wo can I buy these particular headphones in glasgow?'

I had to tell him I dunno wo

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

do other people have phones for home, phones for the street?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

do other people have phones for home, phones for the street?

God, yes. I don't even leave my Grado SR-125s near an open window, much less take them outside. (Not that I wear anything on or in my ears in the street, as such... I dunno, I've always felt using a personal stereo outside of public transport is disrespectful to your fellow peds. What if someone needs to know directions? Also, it says, "Mug me. I have something worth mugging for and I'm so engrossed you've got a good five-second head-start before I even know what you're doing.")

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Your work headphones sound quite posh, Michael. For instance, I have mine on now, but I can quite clearly hear the chit-chat from the Girls' Dept. Sonia has had some kind of run-in with a policewoman. It doesn't seem to have involved physical restraint though.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 22 December 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

It doesn't seem to have involved physical restraint though.

Can you also hear one of your colleagues in the Boys' Dept salivating at the prospect?

The HD202s are hardly posh - £15 tops, I reckon. Nice pads and good isolation. Way too bassy; they turn Bud Flanagan's "Who Do You Think You Are Kidding, Mr Hitler?" into some junglist fantasy.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 22 December 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

The Boys' Dept have all gone home :-(

I am going too.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 22 December 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
I get the touch of tinnitus, too, and it can get really bad after listening to a lot of loud music. I have to be really careful with my ears. My latest guard against this is Shure earphones, which are actually earplugs with audio. They block out a LOT of noise, just like, yannow, those foam earplugs you would wear to a show. But here's the kicker: the sound is fantastic. I'm rockin the esCs.

kenan on Thursday, March 29, 2007 9:47 AM (1 hour ago)

Kenan, what are they like for leakage? And comfort? Thought about them, but with my experiences with fontopias a) hurting and b) always falling out whenever I moved my head, I have been unsure...

peteR on Thursday, March 29, 2007 10:02 AM (49 minutes ago)

You mean noise leak, where other people can hear what you're listening to? Absolutely zero. They're pretty comfortable, though I guess it always takes getting used to jamming things in your ears. And they don't fall out ever, near as I can tell. If you get the cord wrapped on a doorknob (like I did a couple days ago) they'll unplug from your iPod before they come out of your ears.

kenan on Thursday, March 29, 2007 10:24 AM (27 minutes ago)

Cheers - you may well have just made up my mind for me.

peteR on Thursday, March 29, 2007 10:28 AM (24 minutes ago)

oh, i don't know that I want that responsibility.

kenan on Thursday, March 29, 2007 10:34 AM (17 minutes ago)

yeah those look painful and expensive. how are they any better for your hearing than ipod-type buds?

Ms Misery on Thursday, March 29, 2007 10:48 AM (4 minutes ago)

oh man.

kenan on Thursday, March 29, 2007 10:48 AM (3 minutes ago)

thread derail, we'll talk elsewhere.

kenan on Thursday, March 29, 2007 10:49 AM (3 minutes ago)

kenan, Thursday, 29 March 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

so are they better?

Ms Misery, Thursday, 29 March 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

Closed back, over the ear is the way to go.

Ed, Thursday, 29 March 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah but they are kind of unwieldy and I do feel that I look like a bit of a berk in them. I use Koss "The Plug". Great sound dampening but a bugger to insert.

kv_nol, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

You mean the ones that go behind your head Ed? I can't wear those, they hurt. I have big regular old headphones at work and they are great. I need to embrace the bulk and get some more to use with my ipod.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

sam: Yeah, city life + tinnitus = you really ought to get some noise cancelling, or at least earmuff-stylee. Apple earbuds and most headphones don't cancel noise, they just cover it, so if you're somewhere loud (train, traffic) you turn then up louder to compensate, which can make you real deaf real fast. Also, the earbuds that come with the iPod are cheapies, and the sound quality is barely above a tin can on a string.

kenan, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and the noise leakage on the Apple earbuds is the worst ever. I hate listening to what the guy next to me is listening to.

kenan, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Apple earbuds are near the worst in audio quality as well

Ed, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

haha, didn't know about the noise leakage. sorry fellow 37 riders.

my biggest complaint about the ipod buds is that the bass is gone after barely any use.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

Closed back refers to the cans rather than the band. Normally over the head though

Ed, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

The foldable ones do look good! I need a new pair of headphones, I use my mp3 player mostly at the gym (sometimes on the train) - do you reckon the foldable ones are decent for gym wearing, ie something that keeps slipping down my head as it bounces about would be a total no no!

At the moment I am using headphones that I think cost approx £2, they are starting to make my ear go ouch in terms of frequency and minor shocks, so.

I had some creative headphones that I got with my phone (for some reason) - they were completely noise cancelling and I couldn't hack it, I felt really creeped out...

Sarah, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone have a pair of Porta-Pros that they use in the city/on public transit? I used to have a pair that I loved (lost 'em in a move), but that was for walking around in a small semi-rural college town. How are they suited to loud train rides?

en i see kay, Thursday, 29 March 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...
Hey guys, I'm thinking about ordering these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Koss-155540-KSC75-Headphones/dp/B0006B486K

Koss KSC75s - they have great reviews - I'm just concerned that this 'ear clip' thing is a bit strange - I've only ever had cheapo ear buds so I know it can hardly get worse, but would these be okay for running? If anything I fear they might be a bit TOO audiophile because I don't understand half the description :) I'd be using them whilst on treadmill/running outside/on public transport, so like, no home use or anything.

Sarah, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:42 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, I don't really like the earclip thing as I'm worried about sound leakage from outside and from the headphone. They seem light enough so should be fine for running.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

I just don't like the sound of something clipping into my ear! I mean... SURELY it would fall off? Sound leaky is also a thought I spose. Gosh! Someone told me I should just go into a shop and try some headphones, but I so do not like the idea of sharing in other peoples EAR WAX.

Sarah, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 10:34 (eighteen years ago)

Hi! If u don't like clippy thing I can re-recommend these, which are like, TOTALLY 80's, but sound great and won't fall off or whatever.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Koss-Porta-Pro-Portable-Stereophones/dp/B00001P4ZH

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

Actually if you can stand it Sarah there's a thread on ILM that might help but it's v v audiophile centered. The Porta Pro's come out pretty well of the whole thing but they do suffer from soundleakage. I say stand it not because of ILM but because of length of the thread!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)

I used to have that type of clip on headphones, I think they were sonys. They'll be absolutely fine for running, you have to try really hard to make them fall off, and they're dead comfy, or at least mine were.

I've got Sennheiser PX200 headphones which i love, they double up as earmuffs in winter.

I've got Grado SR-125s; I've had them since '98 and replaced the pads with the comfy donuts a couple of years ago. Also AKG K-66s for home recording (performer cans) and Sony EX-71s for outdoor use.

Michael Jones, Friday, 4 May 2007 10:18 (eighteen years ago)

I own three CD players.

Scik Mouthy, Friday, 4 May 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

I just bought another pair of these:

[Removed Illegal Link]
(AKG K 26)

Which I like very much. They really isolate sound nicely, they are small and light. High end is a little rolled off but bass is very good. I don't like wearing headphones at home at all, so I always need for them to be portable and ready for a run.

omg this xchange:

Your work headphones sound quite posh, Michael. For instance, I have mine on now, but I can quite clearly hear the chit-chat from the Girls' Dept. Sonia has had some kind of run-in with a policewoman. It doesn't seem to have involved physical restraint though.

The Boys' Dept have all gone home :-(
I am going too.

^@^, Monday, 7 May 2007 10:31 (eighteen years ago)

Update: Sonia has left the company.

They are giving away free Sennheiser PX100s (?) if you subscribe to Uncut this month. (I bought Uncut to suck up to Jerry the Nipper.)

Did that stop the voiceover/machine-speech madness?

Michael Jones, Monday, 7 May 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

No, it didn't.

Michael Jones, Monday, 7 May 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

I just got these:

Beyerdynamic DT 231s:

http://arstechnica.com/images/headphones/dt231-full.jpg

I really *WANTED* to get the Grado SR60s...I did a little research online and also stopped by the Needle Doctor and talked to one of the guys there, and everyone basically said they are the ultimate affordable headphone for the money....

Unfortunately, lots my use of these is for work, either listening to ipod while writing or actually using them for videogame playing in the office, which is real noisy overall so I had to get closed back ones, which most reviewer said tend to be pretty crappy overall except for super expensive studio monitor ones...So these Beyerdynamic ones sound great so far....got some good notices for value online (only $59)...keep out sound pretty well and don't bother my coworkers...I guess the Grados leak sound quite a bit so I had to nix those...

These kick the shit out of the Sony earbuds that I had been using that just konked out.

Anyone recommend a pair of open backs with a really flat response for mixing down with?

Ed, Friday, 15 June 2007 06:55 (eighteen years ago)

What a fucking great thread.

PJ Miller, Friday, 15 June 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Does anyone want to rec earbuds? Coworker likes bose triport earbuds but worries that tip attachments may get lost

I like the shure ones (I have e2c) and once you figure out which of the foam tips fit best (fuck the rubber ones), you can order a whole batch of them for like $10

mh, Thursday, 28 June 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

hate the idea of tips

Catsup:

These sound great, are cheap and comfortable, and have an unconditional lifetime warranty. They do block out almost all exterior sound, which bothers some people, but I love them like my children, if I had children..

Oilyrags, Thursday, 28 June 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

jeez, cut and past that url. Stupid BB code.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 28 June 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

these were used, and were surprisingly pretty good, for about 2-3 months until they broke. apparently happens to a LOT of people, where they just start cutting out. then I bought these on the cheap from a website. so far, so good, but I like the tips on the old ones more. Luckily, they're interchangeable!

I have discovered (through desperation after I lost one of my rubber tips) that ordinary foam earplugs work great, and are very comfortable. Cut one in half or so with scissors, and poke a hole through the middle of it (I used a kebab skewer). Then work the stem through the middle of it, and voila. Roll them around in your fingers to put then in your ears, just like earplugs. They may actually block MORE sound, and they're cheap and totally disposable. I change these about once a week.

kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

So I just finally bought real headphones and Oh my god I was thrown by how fantastic songs suddenly sound. Here is a list of songs that sound fantastic that I have listened to in the last day:

Hold Me -Fleetwood Mac
20$/Come Around -M.I.A.
Metric/Jet- Ellen Allien and Apparat
Fiery Crash -Andrew Bird
Watch the Tapes -LCD Soundsystem
Hireklon/Fizheuer Ziheuer/EVERYTHING ON FABRIC LIVE - Ricardo Villalobos
Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush -Don't Give up

Please ignore the above list. It is borne of loser-ey enthusiasm (the purest kind)

And also thankyou to Kenan whose comment on the Villalobos Fabric thread finally kicked me into some action.

sam york, Monday, 8 December 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

requesting suggestions for good cheap headphones

sam york, Monday, 8 December 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

There are a lot of answers above, but how cheap and what are you using them for (home, public transport, work?)?

Alex in SF, Monday, 8 December 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

preferably something under 50 usd that would be ok for studio work.
i could do my own research but i prefer opinions of actual dudes and dudettes
i know there are a lot of answers above, but this thread is 4 years old.

sam york, Monday, 8 December 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

grado sr-60s are great

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 8 December 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

No idea on studio work, sr-60s have a great reputation though and if you don't need to take them outside they should work for you. Currently PX-100s are going for $30 on Amazon which is a very good deal.

Alex in SF, Monday, 8 December 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

This thread has more recent comments btw:
