The British are Coming!

I am certain that this has been asked on other threads, but as there are a good dozen of us coming to NYC in 2 weeks time, can natives and others please list their essential things a foreigner should do in the city? Especially the smaller, more intimate, transient things that the guide books won't mention but which will still fill your reserved, repressed and badly-toothed cousins with joy and wonder.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

1. fumble with newfangled mickey-mouse currency, esp. when tipping bar staff

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Coming on a lady's fur coat is always fun.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

pfff, i can do that at home

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

You can do that in Britain! Except the ladies don't tend to assume it's charming and debonair.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

serious doe - and before Barry gets cross (if it's not too late) i could use some recommendations too having never crossed the pond before so fire away

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Also where a girl can get nice clothes and shoes and where is Clinique Bonus Time happening please?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Also is anyone wanting to see Sodastream at the Fez on the night of 21st April?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Barneys is always worth a try. As is Bleeker Street

Slacker, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

[gritted teeth] that's the night before we get there...

also is century 21 still there? it was, um, a little close to ground-zero, but i think ppl have said it's still there...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

sodastream - that would be nice, not sure if we'll be fulfilling duties tho :o(

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, Century 21's still there, still bargainous. Right opposite ground zero.

Slacker, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Fulfilling duties is a bad thing? ;-) (sorry vicky!)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

what is century 21? am I going to spend stupid dollars there?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, I got that wrong, they're playing in Piano's on 21st and Fez on 23rd. Twice in a week!

*sound of Ally C fainting*

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! Like TK Max but 1000 times better. Loads of designer and non designer clothes at stupid prices.

Slacker, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, that sounds good.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Stella McCartney jackets for $99. Hmmm.

Slacker, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

oh .....my.....god

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Thursday Mornings, new stock arrives.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

And Alexander McQueen shoes for the same!

Slacker, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to come to New York!! I am v.v. tempted to max my overdraft and give Madchen lots of money to buy me nice things.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Do it, do it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Century 21 could be combined with a slow walk up through Tribeca, towards Soho. For this last part I suggest 4-ish, when the late lunch lingerers start to mix with the early drinkers and it's still quiet on the sidewalks. Battery Park is also down near Century 21. The round-trip ferry to Ellis Island from there is only six bucks, and includes entrance to the Ellis Island Museum, which I STRONGLY recommend.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna go to new york! :-(

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

No! I don't have a job! I owe lots of money to lots of people! And that won't go away just because I have nice clothes!

(x-post)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

century 21 is a big discount department store. you can get silly bargains but it can be a bit stressful. i rely on it for hosiery and deep markdowns on designers otherwise out of my price range. most recently i got a silk eley kishimoto top for $25, a balenciaga jumper for $80, and a costume national pullover cloak-type thing for $30. if you're willing to spend a bit, you can get fantastic values on in-season gear - pucci shirtdresses at $700 as opposed to $2500, for example.

xpost

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course it wont Ailsa, but nice clothes....!!!!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Ellis Island museum! Yes!

Incidentally, I'd love to do lots of my NY exploring with other ILXors. People who are free in the daytime (mostly brits, presumably), we should sort out a few excursions if that's not a bit too organised...

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

but you mustn't do the open top lower manhatten bus tour, cos that's what we're doing to while away the two hours between ceremony and dinner.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

but if you don't want to pay for the ellis island ferry, you can take the staten island one for free, and you get pretty close to the statue of liberty.

(NB: i have never lived in new york, so please take suggestions from authentic new yorkers before me. i've just written a list of things to see for several friends in the last few months)

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Eat at Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop, 5th Avenue and 22nd street.

Nemo (JND), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

ALSO I am going to be too busy spending money on MYSELF to shop for OTHERS (but if you want some DF fags I could oblige :))

x-post Mark, don't know about you but my mobile won't be working - maybe we could compile a list of who's staying where for easier contactability, otherwise I'll be spending the whole week on public library free-use internet.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

DF fags? Are those homosexuals from Mexico City?

Nemo (JND), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

if anyone wants i can do a big list of places to shop as i'm extremely shallow and materialistic.
a few free/v. cheap, non-shoppingcentric activities: the staten island ferry, a walk over the brookyn bridge to the brooklyn heights promenade, a ride on the tram to roosevelt island, the lower east side tenement musem.

xpost - eisenberg's is great!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Start by doing the obvious things
Go to the top of the Empire State Building and do the boat cruise that goes right around Manhattan (takes about 3 hours). The third obvious thing to do was go to the top of the WTC, now I suppose it's to go to the Memorial. Also take the Staten Island ferry.
I've never seen the point of going to the Statue of Liberty though, and I never have.

Londoners should realise that the underground doesn't work the same way as the Tube (trains on the same line stop at different stations) so to figure out what's going on you must get an underground map and then it's easy.

Stick with Manhattan. The middle bit has the Empire State Building, train and Bus Station but should be avoided otherwise (not dangerous, but dull and grim). You can wander around Upper East Side, Greenwich, and Upper West side without any idea where you're going , and see interesting stuff on every street.
I think it's Roosevelt island that has a football pitch on it.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

*sulks*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Madchen, my duty free is sorted already as trip to mega-cheap Gibraltar next week, hurrah. Buying of people's birthday pressies etc...

(update, I no longer don't have a job thanks to useful phone call two minutes ago)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

where is Clinique Bonus Time happening please?

Madchen, you don't have to go all the way to Nu Yoik, Boots in Sauchiehall Street, right now!

smee (smee), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

is it lame to want to go inside the Statue Of Liberty's head and yell various movie quotes and song lyrics that seem fitting for such a situation? cos i'm gonna

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I was hoping to compile a list of who's staying where, when they'll be over etc. from everyones RSVPs, (as requested in the invites) but they've been a bit lacking.....

Re. clinique - I was looking forward to getting cheap clinique, but my friend sent me some Liz Earle stuff, and I've been completely converted...

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(update, I no longer don't have a job thanks to useful phone call two minutes ago)
Hold back on the nice clothes. sorry ailsa. :-(

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracer's suggestion sounds perfect to me - Friday is my main Manhattan sight-seeing day, Sunday being for Brooklyn and Coney hopefully.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I need some advice for where to get my makeup done on the sat - should I just go to clinique or similar, and get it done for free, should I do this earlier in the week, then buy the stuff I like and do it myself, or should I pay money and get it done properly?

Likewise hairdresser - anyone got any advice? (obviously Phil's suggestion on the other thread is a contender)

And flowers - anyone know of decent not too pricey florists? Other alternative is to go to the flower market and do a DIY job.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Statue of Liberty was closed, but due to reopen soon.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

DONT get your make up done for free, you'll end up looking like Coco the clown, I guarantee it!

smee (smee), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is making me want to go shopping.

mandee, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I would try it out before the morning of the wedding Vicky!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(update, I no longer don't have a job thanks to useful phone call two minutes ago)
Hold back on the nice clothes. sorry ailsa. :-(

Hang on, that means ailsa Does have a job now, yeah?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a problem.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The Whitney is still on.

anthony, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

mailed you Vicky

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Hang on, that means ailsa Does have a job now, yeah?

thank you Mark, yes I do now have a job. Hurrah! Now back to shopping and touristing...

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh right, misread that post, spend away ailsa!
x-post
yay!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not even going to post the name of the dinner venue for fear of someone going "oh! that hellhole" It does have good reviews though, and is Spanish......

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

b-but I can't. Because i'm not going to NY where clothes are cheap, and I won't get paid for a while, and Madchen won't shop for me :(

(i'm not really a spending-money-on-clothes type of person, but this thread is making me think that I should)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

if you want to splurge on hair in midtown, try bumble & bumble. it's an obvious pick, but it's ubiquitous for good reason. they also do makeup. at a much lower price, the aveda salon school in soho/tribeca does good work and is open on saturdays. not sure about how far in advance they book out.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

what's your problem, jack?

I ruv bumble & bumble.

mandee, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

HMMMM *wonders if ailsa could stow away in mandee's suitcase*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Bumble and Bumble make great hair products.

Also if anyone is going to the Kiehl's mothership on 3rd Avenue and 13th, please let me know and I will give you the shpiel to say to the assistants to enable the snaffling of about a gallon worth of samples. And as the prices are good considering ye dollar, might place an order with someone who shares my dangerous Kiehl's obsession.

I like everything to do with Chinatown - please let yourself lose yourselves there for a while - all the way to the easternmost side by East Broadway.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I was just kidding, manny.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

useful useful

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i have four bumble & bumble products in my hair this morning.

ooh and I love kiehls, too!

I'm sick and need to be put away.

mandee, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I know for certain that at some point Jonnie and I will be making a pilgrimage to the Stussy store. And we'll be going to that huge food place (chelsea bakery? an old Oreos factory or summat)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm possibly going (if I can persuade my mate to drive me around) on a tour of Sopranos locations. Am I a terrible geex0r?

Still looking forward to more things to do and see rather than (as has been excellently and thoughtfully covered) to shop.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Cabbage, don't forget to go here, where they have an A-12. (& lots of other exciting stuff)

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

shhhh Dave, I was going to surprise Vic with a trip there as I know how much she'll love it .... ahem.......

PS I hope we'll see you soon, I haven't gazed upon you in ages, also, we must go to Duxford sometime

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

vicky, if you want to get your makeup done free at a department store, i'd suggest bobbi brown-- they really focus on 'natural pretty' looking makeup, and i assume you want to look like yourself.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris, I can get out in the evenings this week for once, are you out at all?

Duxford trip good idea too. They have a few items
there.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Colette, it wouldn't do to scare chris, turning up looking like someone else!

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Only on Thursday night for Boylers birthday this week (unless you want to come round for footie/dinner tomorrow as Vic is out - but she may get jealous ;o)

anyway, New Yorr, carry on.

Where will I get my make up done?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd have thought you'd be more concerned with finding somewhere you can watch your beloved liverpool and some godforsaken hour on the 24th!

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Madchen, if you're reading this, you have about 15 minutes to email me your address so I can send you your birthday present!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

There really are no New Yorkers left on ILX. Wow.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ER, Mary and Lauren excepted.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Tracer not count anymore? ;)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If you do the empire stae building, do it at night, it's way better.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

This itinerary was a success the last time my sister visited.

Start at: City Hall/Tweed Court House
Optional: Shopping at J&R Music World, Century 21
Walk across: Brooklyn Bridge
Head to:Dumbo
Walk around the cobblestoned back streets
Laze about in the park adjacent to Fulton Emprire State Park on a slope overlooking the water
Head to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory
Walk up the hill to Brooklyn Heights
Walk along the Promenade and criss-cross the cutesy streets named Pineapple and such
Back to Dumbo for pizza at Grimaldis (get the olive toppings) (they only take cash but there is a cash machine on site)
Catch a Ferry Taxifrom Fulton Landing back to Manhattan (scratch that, looks like service has been suspended)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

no trip to nyc is complete without a walk through central park & a trip to the strand( i forget the address)

kephm, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

nice one, mary. since the water taxi seems to be suspended, a good alternative would be to catch the 4,5,6,n, or r train in downtown brooklyn. get off at canal street for a walk around chinatown.

xpost

the strand bookstore is on the corner of 12th and broadway.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait! Wait! I'm a New Yorker, too!

I can totally take a day off to guide people around. Mary's tour is great but that's only a teeny-tiny part of the whole NYC experience.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I will give you the shpiel to say to the assistants to enable the snaffling of about a gallon worth of samples.

Does this line of chat work with Kiehl-sellers in department stores?

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

as I tried to say at work, a place to see the footie is both U and K. I suppose Ben may well know an answer to this????

chris (chris), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

off the top of my head, i'd say nevada smith's on 3rd avenue in the east village.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd have to disagree with whoever said don't go to liberty island above, when we were over four years ago it was my favourite favourite bit (it being a glorious autumn day may have had something to do with it). also top of the empire state is well worth it, i was tres tres touristy and phoned my mother from the callbox there, just so i could say "guess where i'm calling from?"

is the museum of modern art still in queens btw? we enjoyed that too (when it was in manhattan).

i nearly bought a vivienne westwood jacket in century 21 for c. $100, but i figured i would never wear it...

thanks for all the other tips chaps :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

If the weather is nice, definitely pad about in either Central Park or Brooklyn's Prospect Park. (If you do the latter, you will be right by the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens--see the Japanese pagoda.)

And check out some community gardens maybe:

6th and B
Bowery and Houston

MOMA is still QNS for now. If you go to Queens, definitely go to PS1.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

If you have time, check out Coney Island and Brighton Beach. I would love to go for Totonno's pizza in C.I. is anyone is game. And if you really have time, head to Asbury Park, while Tillie is still intact.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't go to MOMA Qns right now, it's a bit of a wet squib of a museum. Oh, it's *fine,* I suppose, but it lacks MOMA Mnhtn's scale and that's one of the main things MOMA has going for it.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to go to asbury bark.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

kind of

asbury park.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i will be making a pilgrimage to Coney and Brighton on Sunday 25th - these seem like great suggestions Mary

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Taking an intensive self-guided tour of even a fairly small part of New York City can just overwhelm me; perhaps just walking up Broadway from Battery Park to Central Park (or vice versa) with many detours, while obviously VERY ambitious (something like 5 miles, maybe?) can, I think, give a person a decent sense of Manhattan's scale and variety. That's just me, though -- when I was in London I just walked and walked and walked without having too many specific goals in mind and I had a blast.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike if you're free on the Friday or Monday we could meet up and do a little dice-throwin' tourin', record shoppin' etc.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd love to go to totonno's, mary! steve, you need to buy brightly colored foil-wrapped russian candy in brighton beach and knishes from mrs.stahl's.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

that goes for anyone else too of course (x-post)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooo maybe I will finally get to eat at Totonno's. Every time I've tried it's either, too full and don't even think you can eat here, or I get in to realize I have no cash and they don't take credit. Totonno's you elusive bitch! Can we have a roll call? Who exactly is coming and how long will you all be here for and so forth? Too bad Carey ditched her car; she could have chaffeured us to Asbury P.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I still hope for the bark.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

it might be worth it to rent a car to go to asbury park. maybe not... i have poor impulse control so it seems like a good idea.
agreed about the difficulty of totonno's. perhaps this time we'll be satisfied. if not, there's always difara's in midwood.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if Totonno's is a no-go, there is always the more tourist-friendly and iconic Nathan's. Or we could down vodka and eat at one of the Russian restaurants on the strip.

The Japanese garden

(I don't know why I am getting so into gardens, must be spring.)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

what are knishes btw? you guys and your lingo...

my 'plans' so far:
22nd - arrive at Newark in evening, possible FAP or some sort?
23rd - South Manhattan, Ellis/Staten, whatever else
24th - Central Park, Gugg and other nearby museums
25th - Coney, Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, Manhattan megaFAP in evening
26th - Manhattan sights & shopping, Queens MAYBE

then i'm off to Buffalo at 7am Tuesday yowza

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

a knish is savory pastry dough wrapped around a big wad of filling, usually either potato or cheese-based. varieties include plain potato, spinach, blueberry, meat, broccoli, sweet potato, cabbage, cherry.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the knish

What are you doing in Buffalo?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm just going to see the nearby waterworks before continuing to Chicago

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's where I admit to going out of town on the 24-25. (I'm going to the Women's March in Washington, DC.) I'm very sorry I won't get to meet all you fabulous out-of-towners. But I hope you live it up while you're here.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Jeanne, I wanted to go to that!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I the only one that thinks it would be fun to take over the Slipper Room on burlesque night?

Oh and a word of warning, what ever you do, do not ride the Cyclone! Unless you want to open up your head and have a big stick scramble your brains.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

For the lower manhattan day I would suggest in order:
Taking the Staten Island Ferry
Walking to Wall Street and gaping at the soldiers with semi automatics milling about.
Heading over to Ground Zero and Century 21
Upwards to City Hall and JR Music
Then to Canal Street and Chinatown for some dim sum and cheap I love New York T shirts and Prada, Vuitton, and Gucci knock offs.
Then to Soho and around the NYU Washington SQ Park area where you can try to score drugs.
And if you are still awake, zig zag over to St Marks and Kims Music.

If you were to start at where the Staten Island Ferry picks up and walked all the way to the East Village this would only take about 40 minutes with no stopping, so it makes for good sightseeing.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary's itinerary could involve a stop at my place, very close to the suggested route. Open house! You can have a drink, use the computer, and look at printing equipment.

If you want a lower-key Century 21 shopping experience, the obscure other location in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, could be a stop on the trip from Manhattan to Coney Island. It's a minor detour.

Chris: it's a breeze to find a place to watch football on Saturday mornings. Nevada Smiths is the county seat of the Premiership in NYC. It'll cost you ten bucks to get in the door. The fixtures are chalked on a board in the window a week ahead of time, but they're also on the website-- Liverpool is on tape delay at noon, while Man U-Fulham and Chelsea-Everton are live. It smells like B.O., there's one huge television and many smaller ones, and chances are your beer will be served to you in a plastic cup. There's almost certainly a place where the NYC Liverpool Supporters Club will watch the game live and in a much more pleasant bar (pint glasses, woo-woo!), but I'm pretty sure their place is uptown, on the east side in the 80s. If you're interested, I'll find out the details.

If anyone is curious/masochistic, I'm going to the Metrostars match at the Meadowlands. They're hosting New England, managed by Steve Nicol and Paul Mariner. I can't promise much for atmosphere, or quality of play, but don't let that stop you.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

when's that on Ben?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I the only one that thinks it would be fun to take over the Slipper Room on burlesque night?

I hope so.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Eeeevvvvvviiillll mary.

And what about karaoke.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

A pretty good NYC shopping map

oh the adidas store in soho has the most adorable pale blue shirt with boxers (boxers for punching, not boxers for wearing) stenciled onto it. its for girls and only $40. a bargain in sterling, i think.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

How about karaoke at the Princess Lounge?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i think nevada smith's fee has gone up - it was $20 last saturday.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i was going to say that we have a huge tv now, 50 inches?, and fox sports world (football is always on!). But a trek out to w'burg Lorimer stop is not a goo day of siteseeing.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

or a good one.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Is anyone else saying "The British are coming...all over this record" whenever they read this thread title?

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Keihl's has been bought by L'Oreal and rumours say it is getting less and less good as a result. Which is a damn shame.

jadrenos (jadrenos), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry (sp) Kiehl's

jadrenos (jadrenos), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That's great Ben thanks, I'm only allowed the one beer unfortunately as I suppose I have to be fresh for the ceremony later, if they show it at nine though, that would be amazing tiiming, later at 12, that would be more problematic.......

I can't believe they're showing el super derbi too!!!! and the tottengham arsenal game has dfinitely been moved to the sunday.

Thanks everyone in fact!

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still happy with the White Eagle Brushless Shave Cream, but the new sample containers are of niggardly apportion.

Kickoff at the Meadowlands is 4pm, and getting there takes maybe a half-hour from the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd Street. Does that coincide with the ceremony?

Lauren, Nevadas can shove it if they want TWENTY DOLLARS' cover. Please tell me they're at least still giving a free first pint. But typically they have thrown the doors open at the end of the live broadcasts, so it may be possible to see Liverpool for nothing.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Last night I realised that my comment about the bus tour could be taken the wrong way. We have hired our own private bus for all our wedding guests, as we wanted to provide something to do, for the whole wedding group, for the time between the ceremony and the meal.

So no one needs to worry about what to do to fill the time...

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello chums.

Just in case you're interested, I'll be flying in to NYC on the 16th, away from NYC from the 18th-21st, then back until the 26th.

I will be engaging in the usual pursuits I expect. I think VIcky decided to hire a bus to keep me out of the ALEHOUSE.

I'm looking forward to it.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris, a little bit of effort and I found http://www.lfcny.org, the Liverpool FC New York Supporters Club. Their home is the 11th Street Bar, between Avenues A and B. And for what it's worth, they only charge a $10 cover.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ceremony = 3pm

Wow, thanks again Ben.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

We FAPped in the 11th St Bar in November 2002. It's good.

I'd never have gone if I'd known.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

my good lady wife and i will be in new york from the 22nd until the 29th (ie almost entirely different from everyone else...)

liverpool game sounds like a laff :) BUT will anywhere have the conference scores????

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Is anyone else saying "The British are coming...all over this record" whenever they read this thread title?

No, but whenever I read the thread title I think AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! THE BEATLES!!!! IT'S BEEN A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, etc. etc.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think of Colin Welland.

Steve, I'll have Uncle Neil text them to us.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in Manhattan from the 22nd to the 27th, and maybe the evening of the 30th too. Am very excited about the bus ride!

(Jeanne, you *have* to come out at sometime, even if it's not to the megaFAP. This is non-negotiable)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally C and I are arriving on 21st and leaving on 28th. I think Ally's plans for the week are:

Wake up at noon
Find somewhere to eat
Decide what to do that afternoon
Do it
End up in pub

Can somebody please, please, please convince him this is a thoroughly silly thing to do and that making some kind of provisional timetable a la Stevem might be a better idea? He just laughs at me.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

(i was assuming uncle neil would be our source of info :))

(madchen, ally is right)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Ally's plan.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Ally is wrong because this will happen instead:

Wake up at noon
Find somewhere to eat
Decide what to do that afternoon
Go to that place and discover it is closed/moved to Queens/expensive but if we'd gone yesterday afternoon it would have been free
Realise it's too late to do something else
End up in pub

Spending a week in the pub is fun, but I can do that any time I come to London, innit?

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm there from the 21st to the 28th and will be participating in some of the above. But I also need to see a few films while I'm over and throw dice in the ally.

And spend the rest of the time in the pub.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm working on the assumption that making firm plans is silly because they'll get blown off course somehow by The Mentalists.

My plan: spend at least one afternoon doing the contemporary art thing. Buy myself a suit before the Big Day. Do some record and book shopping.

These aside, my plan is much the same as Cookie's.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oha nd of course karaoke suits those of us with the special voices...

But certainly interested in being blown off course as I have never been one for planning.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I did say provisional plans. Hrumph.

Tim, take a spare suit just in case you don't find one. There's nothing worse than tramping round shops with two hours to go when you still haven't found anything. Oh, hang on, you are a boy, 'that'll do' is part of your shopping vocab.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

boys vs gurls: FITE

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

the circle line cruise, highlighted above, is very good

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

so. me, ally, pete, tim and jonnie do the odd thing and sit in the pub, gurls have regimented plan, led by stevem who shows them "the sights"

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Which side does Barry come down on?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

he will have a foot in both camps

What do I do?

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever Vicky tells you to, probably.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I have my own mental (ie. in my mind) list of things I'd like to do:

Shopping Day - must buy Clinique (Bonus if poss. because it's way cheaper than Sauchiehall St, Smee), clothes from Century 21, Beef Jerky, Blueberry Morning cereal
Ellis Island
Circle Line Ferry
Radio City
Gaze upon Flatiron Building
MOMA Qns - already been when in Manhattan, but want to gaze again upon a couple of paintings plus show Ally my fave painting in the world ever
Sodastream gig if I can persuade somebody to come with me

Various stuff listed above looks v. tempting also. I have already been up the Empire State Building but wasn't that taken - it's not my favourite building anyway and posing for photos with a man in a gorilla suit is, erm, well. And you can get good views elsewhere. But if Ally wanted to go up the Empire State Building I would, but HE WON'T BLIMMING TELL ME WHAT HE'D LIKE TO DO.

I will now stop moaning about my boyfriend, who isn't so bad really.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I am NY 22 evening-27 evening, I think.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Lucy the point of me buying a suit over there is (a) I don't have a suit appropriate for 'best' right now, and (b) I don't want to have to haul my k-rub suit around. Also I understand exchange rates are favourable just now.

"That'll do" is totally justifiable if, like me, you're not expecting to look good anyway.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

oh radio city is worth it, definately, ph34r THE DECO!!!!

i'm keen on sodastream at the fez :)

also lucy IT'S A SUIT, they're all the same...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

you'll be the belle of the ball Tim

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The abc studios tour?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

which food places are good? ie markets/ huge deli emporiums etc

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

wedding time, don't let the belle end

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim, I'm expecting you to look ravishing - don't let me down.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

You lot are in so much trouble.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Lucy, I'll be totally up for doing stuff with you, though the occasional pub thing sounds good too. Are you sure your moby isn't tri-band? I don't suppose you could upgrade/borrow one, could you?

(also, send me your address or you won't get the rub b-day gift I have for you)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(i have a feeling i saw mobies for hire last time, but this may have been a pigment of my imagination)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was going to New York last year I upgraded my mobile telephone to one which would work in that America. I was very pleased I did.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a good idea, Madders. Go on, make communication straightforward!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. Haha rotsa ruck texting though.

Madchen you can combine gazing upon Flatiron Building with a tuna melt and bowl of split-pea soup at the above-mentioned Eisenberg's deli. (They're only about 2 blocks away from each other!) If you do that for lunch, from there you can go almost anywhere else you're talking about.

re: markets etc - CHINATOWN, folks!! Has the Fulton fishmarket closed yet? If not, see this legendary institution before it gets packed up and — moved to Queens!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

My moby was inherited about 2 years ago from N's Dad who had it for a couple of years before me. It is a k-basic Nokia. There is no way it's tri-band. I probably won't even get it to charge up due to US voltage weirdness (this is what happened when I was in Denver although my borrowed work triband was OK) And my monthly bill is about £25/month so I'm not sure I'm worthy of a free upgrade

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

£25/month is a lot.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Lucy, most airports have a concession where you can rent a phone for the duration of your trip

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Madchen, you almost certainly are. The Nokia 6100, which I have, is tri-band and basic but small and solid, and it's almost certainly going to be free on any network. Seriously, give them a call. You might be surprised at how keen they are to upgrade you.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus, £25/month? They can bloody well upgrade you pronto and LIKE IT.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're going to a delicatessen, you should note that the Carnegie Deli has been having a war with the health inspectors. I think it's shuttered presently.

And if someone actually manages to have a functioning mobile phone, I will get the scores from the conference to them.

Tracer, is the fish market moving to MoMA QNS?

Tim, I'm pretty sure the second half of April is when Brooks Brothers has one of its semi-annual sales. A three-season suit can be had for next to nothing, and they're very speedy with the alterations.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

How far away from actual real nothing is next-to-nothing?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought a tan lightweight suit for $200 last spring at the main Brooks store near Grand Central. The alterations were done in a day, and I'm very pleased with it.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

£25 a month isn't a lot!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

it is, to me.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Cripes Ben that's much closer to actual zero than I thought you were going to say!

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the only time i've been to new york i spent the day walking around buildings. think the lowest in terms of street numbers i got was the Flatiron building and the highest was MOMA.

best thing about the ESB is the view of the Chrysler building it affords.

Trump Tower is also worth a visit but take your sunglasses as it redefines the word 'gaudy'.

Grand Central Station seemed to be more scaffolding than building when i was there.

this thread makes me want to go back. but i have to keep london safe whilst everyone else is away 8)

andy

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Sodastream are lovely & well worth seeing. They would also be well chuffed to get an enthusiatically supportive audience in the US so I think you should ALL go with Lucy to see them (like both times.)

Mooro (Mooro), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

my phone is tr-band and will support everything, I'm also considering getting a sim card for my xda, which will also do the ameriky talky thing, so I could lend it out for a duration.

Sodastream may be a cool thing to do the night before the wedding, but if Vic wants to go too, that may put the kibosh on things.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I have go-go dancers booked for the Friday Chris.

Jonnie, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

wicked

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

LIke I said before Chris - I am allowed to see you the night before the wedding, but then I'll be sleeping at my parents, and Jonnie can have a decent hotel room with you, sharing your bed ;0)

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the bed big enough for go-go dancers too?

Jonnie, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

£25 really is not much - a lot of people I know pay £100+ and these are the ones who can threaten to terminate their accounts, confident they'll be offered plenty of incentives to stay. I've also been arsey and refused to go onto Voda's new price plan because it'd cost me about £5 a month more. They don't like me for this. However, I want to stick with Voda because calls to Ally and other Vodas are free. I'll look into hiring one at the airport though.

Koogs, you're right about the view of the Chrysler buildling from the ESB - I'd forgotten about that.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

calls from ally's=0

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Madchen, that's simply not true. You will seriously be retained - and most upgrades are free unless you want a flash phone. Go on, give them a call - you have nothing to lose, and if successful you'll be making my life easier :)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, OK. Should I threaten to leave and see what they offer or should I be upfront and say it's time I had an upgrade and how about a tri-band for my upcoming holiday?

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, do that exactly, I've had decent upgrades in the past doing just that.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Particlaulrly good if you say one of your mates just swopped to Orange for the free Wednesday movie deal...

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I wouldn't threaten to leave - I did that last time but found that I couldn't keep up with the deception and felt a real obvious fake. But yeah, do make sure you know what other prioviders are offering as deals right now - have a quick check of their websites before you call. If they offer you a phone for say £30-50 you really should be able to get that down to zero - do you remember when I was at your house in Glasgae 2 years ago and managed to get a £150 handset for free? I've found the phrase "on balance, I really can't aford that" works better than threatening - it puts the onus on them to make you a better offer.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh, regarding football on television, I've been looking at the fixtures for the 17th, not for the 24th. Nevada Smiths will evidently be showing the Liverpool-Man U match live, after all. (I'm assuming the 11th Street Bar will also show it, and as Nevada's is the home of the MUFC NYC Supporters Club, Chris may be happier at 11th Street.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a winner then, I thought it was a midday kick-off? but if it's a three o'clocker it's going to be on at ten (is that right?) and that would be perfect. Would you be able to join us Ben?

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

the 11th street bar has a much nicer atmosphere than nevada smith's, imho. sometimes they have pancake breakfasts on weekends!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Just noticed this thread.... I'm up for whatever. FAPs, shopping, tours, watching footy, drinking, drinking, etc.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Sure, I'll see you there!

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

pancake breakfast? Liverpool v manyoo? a cold beer to settle the nerves? wonderful

chris (chris), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Chelsea Market is also good.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I meant Union Square Market for food; Chelsea Market is good for knicknacks though. And there's this:

New York Walks

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

michael daddino -- i can help you lead a daytime tour!

and yo dudes! see ya all soon! i'm psyched for whatever...if anyone wants my cell phone # just email me

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want hardcore walking tour action, picking up a copy of the AIA Guide to New York City is a great idea. (I've been going through every tour in the book, in order, since late 2002.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be grand, Geeta. (Though as for Steve's suggestion about record stores -- forget it, I'm useless in that department. I typically stick to Kim's Mondo and that's about it. Rare stuff dets d'ed or ordered online.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

pancake breakfast? Liverpool v manyoo? a cold beer to settle the nerves? wonderful

i'm with the big lad :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Likewise, though I'll be wanting both teams to lose.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 8 April 2004 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

stick it up to the big lad, he won't let you down

chris (chris), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone fancies a NYC pint on Friday afternoon, let me know.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Just a little bump, just in case.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I am down for pintage at any time, of course. 21st-28th, that is.

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hills, that is. swimmin' pools, movie stars.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, I kind of want to fill my days wondering at amazing sights, drinking coffees in hip cafes and seeing daring art in all its forms. But I'll probably end up in the pub a lot, too.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

You get gayer by the second.

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

You're beggin' for a peggin', Cookie.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

you're cruisin'.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

great, more gay people with funny accents in new york.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

no its not

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I have only every flown BA to the US before. I am used to 18 or something channels to choose my inflight entertainment from. This time I am flying with Continental and I notice that the films available for my viewing pleasure on the way out are:

Love Don't Cost a Thing
Chasing Liberty
Goldfinger
101 Dalmations (doesn't specify if it's the animation or real-action remake)

This is total bobbins. BA are showing 11 films per flight inc. Raging Bull, The Third Man and Master & Commander, none of which I've seen and all of which I want to. How much does a portable DVD cost?

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

this is annoying me too, and you should see what dreck you have to put up with if you fly back in may. At least I got a nice new shiny game for the gba

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

is tim there yet? i'm actually getting QUITE EXCITED now :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

he textumalised me from the launch pad this am, so he is probably flying over Newfoundland now

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm bricking myself. Virgin should have some decent films tho.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Virgin from the UK
21 Grams, Cheaper by the dozen, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Mona Lisa Smile, Something's Gotta Give, The House of Sand and Fog, Welcome to the Jungle

Virgin to the UK
Big Fish, Good Boy! Goffika, Kill Bill 1, Monster, Stuck on You, Under the Tuscan Sun

Slightly superior to Continental.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

American seems to have films wot I have seen, which is a great pity. Still, I'll probably neck two quick bloody Mary's and sleep the rest of the way.

Of that film list its only looney Tunes and Good Boy1 (Aliang dog film) I haven't seen. So glad I'm a not on Virgin.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

taking my little jukebox with phone size LCD so i can watch my own video stuff too (Simpsons, music vids, whatever films i can manage to download over the next few days)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete, were you lying when you said you were on the same flight then?

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm flying w/ air france.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

MiU - about two hundred and fifty notes

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I was certain I was going on Continental from Gatwick, but checking my mail it appears I am on American from heathrow. And am very confused. Flight is at 10.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

that'd be us on that one Pete, (muppet)

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you the Continental. It might be because I booked last minute. Still we can race each other across the pond. What time does your get in?

(I am now very glad I looked).

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

you should be!! we lave at 10.30 and get in at 1330 iirc

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

that would have been idiocy cubed, dude...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't suppose anyone's taking the 14.30 BA flight to Newark on the 20th, are they?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

169 notes in Argos but still out of reach (also it's Alba)

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Madchen, Cabbage OTM. Pam & Stephen each have one of these:

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000AINEH.01-AIWHEFKG4HT6N.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

c. £250 from Richer Sounds, Multi Region, good battery life.

Mooro (Mooro), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

that DVD player is LUSH, i am seriously tempted

i'm VA, LH 1600 - NE 1840, 22/04

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

it's so tempting

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Q: If 169 notes is out of reach, what does that make 250 notes?
A: Waaaaaaaaay out of reach.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It is a lovely thing though.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably a lovely thing that you are not allowed to use on planes.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

you can use them, unless your on airline that bans all portable electronics (god help you). portable players are much cheaper over here, but then i assume you run into region compatibility issues.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh, that should be "you're" not "your."

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

If you travel 1st Class on Air India you get a portable DVD player. Not to take away with you though.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it was OK on Uzbekistan Airways (or whatever it was that Pam flew to India on.)

Also, I though that the non-use of electronic equipment like laptops, games, etc. was limited to the take-off & landing stages of the flight?

Mooro (Mooro), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine gets in at 12:35. JFK right?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Mooro is correct. I will buy an ipod tomorrow, perhaps. Nice as it looks, a portable DVD player seems like a luxury I will not use very often.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you have to order ipods, nine months, in advance.

tough luck, raleigh.

I am still waiting, for madchen to tell me what films I will see on the aeroplane.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally, just nick one, like a proper Ned, then. Keep on the lookout for those white earphones.

Mooro (Mooro), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

there's this weedy guy that walks past our flat, nearly every day, and I have reason to believe he sometimes carries an ipod. I might try my luck.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

So when are we going to the pub? Drop me an email or something.... I can never find this thread.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Cook in New York already? If so, I am out of touch. If not, then why isn't he waiting till he gets there to buy an iPod?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Because of the commas.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I told him it takes months to get an ipod and he thinks america is so different. I am going to laugh at him.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

You know you don't really have to wait months anymore, right?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

When does the drinking begin?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't know you ever had to, N.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, before Xmas there was supposedly a shortage.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

oof, i think i missed the afternoon drinking. was caught up in zelda

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

God, that old time New York glamour.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Why aren't you visiting, Nick?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't make me sad! I'd love to, but I have been so broke this year.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 16 April 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You just need to get your priorities straight. A little last Glasto, a little more NYC.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 16 April 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe you can be HARD, CORE like me and do both via obtuse bank loans

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 April 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard that Tim H. is in this bitch already.

Carey (Carey), Friday, 16 April 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear sir/madam,

I would like to apply for an obtuse bank loan. I am an idiot.

Yours ever,

N.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

but you loved me on the glasto thread

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

they were crazy times, anything felt possible

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you drunk? I'm totally wishing I could emulate your mastery of the obtuse.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem has to wear a tie when he faps.

Carey (Carey), Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim H., if you read this, please bring your posse to Union Pool, Wburg.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim H. is the Kayne West of our spring collection.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes I will buy one there. That was my original thinking before I forgot I'd thought that.

Will contact be easy when we are there? I am oblivious.

Ally C (Ally C), Saturday, 17 April 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

worse than that.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 17 April 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey and I are going to Arthur Avenue. If anyone wants to come contact us pronto.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 17 April 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys better get the marrying thing over with, pronto, because it looks like the cherry trees are in peak bloom right now.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 18 April 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim H., if you read this, please bring your posse to Union Pool, Wburg.

Shitty shit, missed this message. We drank countless bottles of Mexican beer at Pedro's, down in Dumbo, then when it got too cold outside we went to my place. You should ask Tim about Wednesday/Thursday?

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Sunday, 18 April 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, Mr. Pike, or Tim, or someone, please mail me with details! Oops--I never check this address...Will do so now...

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 April 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

(Sorry Tim, if you can read this, I completely missed your e-mail. I've sent you a mail to your yahoo account and also left my number; I'll also try and give you a call tomorrow.)

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 April 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i txted tim with this info (after he txted me asking where you were), it seems tim was being morriseyesque with his cell

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 18 April 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

If I send you all drunken text messages on Saturday night will they get through?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ATTN.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 18 April 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we might need a new thread.

But Afternoon drinking on Wednesday. Turning into evening drinking. And so on. I hit that bitch at 1 and don't expect to be sober for a week.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 19 April 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone (female, although there will be a couple of blokes there, but someone needs to keep Chris company) interested in coming along to the hen party - we're all meeting at my hotel (the moderne, 55th and broadway) apparently, at 7.30.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 19 April 2004 07:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Vicky remind me, what day is the hen party? Thursday?

Ally and I are going to try and hire a mobie at the airport so we'll post the number here when we've got it.

RJG, Air France doesn't say what it's inflight movies are going to be so prepare for nice surprises. Possibly dubbed into French.

Ladies and Gents, here be your 5-day forecast:
19th April - Sunny, max 20
20th April - Sunny, max 14
21st April - Grey cloudy, max 10
22nd April - Sun/cloudy, max 19
23rd April - Sunny, max 17

I will have to check back tomorrow for wedding weather.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm, mobile hire.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope you don't have the horrific experience I had with Air France on the way to Japan. I got to see the Majestic dubbed into French (or Japanese) with English subtitles. YOWSA!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh mobile hire, tempting

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

and It's been confirmed that Liverpool game is on at 10am at the 11th street bar

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely up for that

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Erm, anywhere showing Stoke vs West Ham?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Times Square Mega-Plasma

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hen party is the thursday, yes.

Weather forecast for saturday is getting better, yesterday two sites forecast showers, but today it's sunny intervals. yippeee! Especially as our bad weather contingency has fallen through, though we may be able to sort out another one, just to be on the safe side.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can bring a big umbrella.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 19 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

what's a hen party?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

lays eggs

oh, hold on......

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

a hen is usually party a brood.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh, forget i asked.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry Phil, it's a lady stag party

chris (chris), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, my friend "hired a mobile"/"rented a cell phone" at the airport a few months ago. it was cheap for the phone, like $15 for the week, but something ridiculous like $1.50 per minute incoming & outgoing.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ATTN: speaking about "football" in america is illegal

bnw (bnw), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Not in the Liverpool bar.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Not far from where I work, there's a Spanish restaurant (and bar), with an apartment building called "The Markel" nearby. This is almost an interesting coincidence.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 19 April 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, Spanishy goodness. A mere 40 hours from my flight now.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Not far from where I work, there's a Spanish restaurant (and bar), with an apartment building called "The Markel" nearby.

That is barry interesting.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

So, yo, Geeta, are we going to do the tourguide thing? And who would be up for it? And when?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 19 April 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

can we have a new thread with DEFINITE events that people will be AT (other than a wedding)? ie. this watching football thing, the sunday night drinks?

I want to coney island, sometime. I guess there's not much chance of asbury park.

hey, could it be possible, even, to have a page with a table of things? stevem are you the internet? f nominates you and I second it but only if you can/want to do it. just like SOME PEOPLE ARE DEF DOING THIS ON THURS AND AT THIS TIME AND SOME OTHERS ARE DOING THIS AND THEN ON FRI AND SO ON. hm? it might be difficult to coordinate or get everyone to participate in but, otherwise, it's going to be difficult to coordinate and get everyone to participate in.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 19 April 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly. Because I will think that most people will not have time (not me, I have all the time in the world) to look through a thread to see where people are going to be and at what time that if there was one page that could be accessed with a coherent table that everyone will be able to find things while intoxicated, yeah good, uh, i can't fix that sentence.

F (Carey), Monday, 19 April 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

See, I knew you'd come round the the PLANNING way of mind eventually. RJG, have a word with your flatmate will you?

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 19 April 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I am an empty vessel. If people want to suggest a tour idea (like the walking up Broadway idea), I'll be willing to lead people around on Friday morning-afternoon, pending my boss' approval). (I only know Manhattan very well, though.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Richard, I already talked about going to Coney Island with Tim. It's a hella fun place. In addition to the rides and the carnival stuff, there's a great pizzeria on Neptune Ave, there's the famous Nathan's for hot dog and fried clams, and a couple little bars that serve beer that isn't great but is deliciously cold. I'm up for driving, though my old beetle can't fit any more than four passengers (three if you're not feeling like being intimate in the back seat).

Maybe there's a City Island trip in the works, too. Lovely little place, and the excellent Mooncurser Records guarantees the worth of the drive.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ally's out with girls and still needs a haircut but I will more words, with him, again.

crosspost

yes, f was saying maybe monday for coney. you can get out there on the subway, can't you? they did on seinfeld.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

coney island is a really easy subway ride. i don't think it's open open for the season yet, but it's worth going even so.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I went on the subway at about this time of year. I think it was the first weekend it was open. In fact I think it was exactly this time of year. April 1998. Oh, I was there for the Easter parade, which was early April in that year. So maybe it will be open.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

my bad. apparently easter sunday is the start of the season.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i can just set up a separate calender ala http://my.calendars.net/ilxfap/ for the days we're in New York maybe

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I told cabbage you'd be mannion enough to step up and do it and he did groan.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I were coming.

Me on Coney Island pier, six years ago. I was 24. Bah:

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

you look better without the beard

(damn x-post oh well it was lame anyway)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

10 point to anyone who can guess the bearded man's father.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno. you?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

God

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

?

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Not God. Sorry, I should'nt interrupt all this important arrangement talk. I'll leave this thread now. But you should all use stevem's calendar thing. Perhaps we should use one in Glasgow, too.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

haha.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The bearded man is LD Beghtol & you are luring him away from JtN - such self sacrifice!

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I would be up for Coney Island subway ride and also some of us were working on going out dancing one night for those who are up for it.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i just mailed everyone on this thread who's going or already there the login to add stuff HERE - hope people find it useful. if not, as they say in New York 'eh...'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

you bastards

This was the view from my (half) sister's cousin's apartment we stayed at for a few days. Life sure was peachy.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 19 April 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I'd totally be up for going to the Whitney again, if I can take off work early on Friday (or the whole day).

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The Whitney Biennial is happening RIGHT NOW, people! Three-plus floors of wonderful and terrible and Momusian art !

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds great!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I ended up at Coney last weekend and while the rides were in action, my favorite boutique was not. Defintely count me in for Coney/Asbury/City Island action, people. I am happy riding the train, as it is my most recent favorite thing to do.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

TRAITOR!!!

Carey (Carey), Monday, 19 April 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

if people want to go dancing, some friends of mine are doing a party on friday night with some avalanches associate from melbourne djing and everyone's favorite vocoder-happy gap band soundalikes chromeo performing. i'd have to do the blag thing by tomorrow, though.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ATTENTION! ATTENTION! ATTENTION!

FREE ICE CREAM CONE DAY AT BEN & JERRY'S ON TUESDAY. APRIL 27TH!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

typical - the day we fly down to Miami.

Steve, I've put some up, I never doubted your mannionliness

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I would def like to go to the whitney (on fri?).

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 07:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Whitney thing followed by lauren's club thing is a plan and a half (have e-mailed you lauren).

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I put in my ETA and added a note to the whitney thing so that people, who want to go, can list themselves.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't figured out who put 'anal sex with stevem' yet. was it you? WAS IT?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't remember doing it.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

If I had had anal sex with Steve M I would try and put it out of my mind too.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

POSTING ABOUT IT IS NOT GOING TO HELP YOU DO THAT

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm definitely up for Coney Island. I remember asking Ally if he wanted to go and he said "s'pose" which I translate as "yes, I'd rather like that" because he's not one to show enthusiasm. I am though, and I say YESYESYES to dancing! Carsmile & I had sort of plans to go see Sodastream on the Friday night at the Fez but maybe we could come along after?

Also, I think free Ben & Jerry's day is also Mrs Carsmile's birthday, which is a happy thing.

It may not necessarily have been a bloke who wrote that Stevem (although it certainly wasn't me)

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll miss free ice cream as will be on an early train, sob

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

DON'T LOOK AT ME, FOLKS!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

you're so ashamed!

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Meg's Birthday is Wednesday (is on the calendar as well), and I leave in the evening. But proper nice lunch would be a good thing.

I am certainly up for Coney Island (and obv reciting all the bits I know from Annie Hall). I more of a drinker/singer than a dancer (was anyone going to take us Kareoke (Careyoke?) but if it keeps me up all night I'm in.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Marycareyoke?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

if new york is the city that never sleeps then i don't really want to either

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait a second, I remember the last time you didn't sleep. It wasn't pretty.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Dudes I'm about to leave work (and the modern interweb) behind now. See some of you on Saturday, some when we come back. Thanks to all for their good wishes.

God, I'm really excited.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Knock 'em dead, Chris.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I am insanely jealous of everyone flying over. See you all on the other side, and say hello to everyone NYC for me.

I'll be thinking of you when StevieG completes his hat trick this weekend.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

if it's not too much trouble, can someone pick up one of those gigantic boxes of jelly babies from duty free? i'll reimburse and buy you juleps.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Your scampi's not down you're not coming in

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

madchen/carsmile, you know that the booker at Fez is Sinister's very own Br1an W1nters? Maybe he can put you on the guestlist!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? Good man. I don't think I've ever actually spoken to or emailed him though. Has Carsmile? Is Carsmile still here?

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

yes i'm still here and i knew brian was the booker at the fez, but as i haven't spoken/emailled/chatted to him for probably three years i thought it a little rude just to contact him to say "put us on the guesty pls".

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I could ask the person organising the tour to put you on if you want ...

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

As third support act.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, I'm off then. This time tomorrow I'll just be getting into JFK.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Brian is a nice man. What's going on at Fez? I really want to work out what I want to do now but have no time since Tracer Hand eventually yapped into Wednesday (PS Glasgow loves Tracer). I'm flyin' today!

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I can confirm that he is flying.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

FLYIN'

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, we are in New York City. How strange. Please call us on

551 221 2354

for getting together and forms of entertainment / tours / mutual falling over.

So anyway, WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THIS CITY? It's like they've taken all the craziest people in the world, GIVEN THEM CARS, dumped them on an island and said "hey! make your own rules! hahahahaha!"

I like this city.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Suzy for the great tip about hiring, sorry renting mobile, sorry cell phones. $30 per week, incoming calls free (phone away folks). They have crazy sms rules, though, and start charging per minute from the time you start to type the message. Thank heavens N. taught me the ways of the predictive text message.

New York is hot and also hott.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Expedia are bastards. We got to our hotel last night to find they had cancelled our booking in the lovely deco building within staggering distance of the reception to another hotel in a less nice building on Lexington Ave. "Sorry Ma'am, that booking has been cancelled" is the last thing you want to hear when you've had a long flight and all you want is a shower, dinner and a long sleep. Grrr.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

welcome, kids!

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

New York is not really hot. I don't know why Madchen keeps insisting this.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

You've got to learn to snap back at the NYC services or they'll walk all over you while calling you Ma'am. The correct answer is 'We didn't cancel it. Please find me the record of this so that I can confirm it with Expedia and determine the extent of the inconvenience. Ma'am.'

Oh, and the phone tip is all Felicity, lest you confuse me for an organised person.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, someone phone me to explain FAP / hen night plans tonight. I have no idea what I'm doing.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The doorman gave us money for the cab fare, at least.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

there's the mint julep fap in brooklyn. i feel weird phoning a complete stranger, though. can i text you the address/time, or is that too expensive?

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

To reinforce what suzy said, do not be british about service, kick up a fuss, the very leats they can do is give you a discount. Kick their collective arses.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally Summit! Ally Summit!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

They have crazy sms rules, though, and start charging per minute from the time you start to type the message.

This is quite possibly the most moronic thing I have ever heard in my life.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

well my phone doesnt work at all which is the straw that breaks idiot stevem's back really (alongside walking over williamsburg bridge last night during the great futile quest for the mint julep). so i'll check what's going on but buy a phonecard probably. my plan today is to head down to Battery Park for around 10 (i feel strangely awake), go on the Staten ferry and then when back head up to C21 (need a nice shirt if nothing else) then walk north up Broadway onto 5th Avenue eventually ending up at the Whitney for around 6pm. i expect other stuff will happen on the way. Grabbing a sandwich at that Eisenbergs place around 3 maybe. people will no be able to call me tho :(

stevem (blueski), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

how much is it to get a pay as you go one?

gareth (gareth), Friday, 23 April 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to be at the Whitney a little early (maybe 5:30) because I expect a crush of art-school students at the line wanting to get in for near-free. Maybe everybody should do the same.

Steve, Staten Island + walking from Broadway to the Whitney + Whitney Biennial + tonight's festivities is pretty ambitious.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The most I've ever walked in Manhattan is Penn Station to the World Trade Center, and 14th street to my home in Yorkville (UES), and I've done both routes only a couple of times.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

In other words, you might want to think about taking a bus at a few points along the route....which is actually not a terrible way to see the city, provided that the bus is slow enough.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

how many times will I be in new york?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Tell Tim that the 1994 World Cup winning Brazil side are set to play Exeter City.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

are you guys having fun? it's like spring in london!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, we're having so much fun in London without you. As much as you lot. Probably more.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

N - Tim already knows that, he told me in the pub about two weeks ago.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Also tell Pete that Major Charles Ingram is dead.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally C. are you sure that phone number is yours?

Carey (Carey), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I should have known, Matt.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete should also bbe told the sad news that Dave Clark has been sacked by Deptford Water filtration plant.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, f, that is ally C's number. I just called him. yeah, though, the first time I got "hello, this isn't maria's cellphone, any more" or something.

my mobile works, it seems. I don't know what you'd dial, for it, though.

+447930322037, I think.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)
