Does this piss anyone else off?

those slick mother fuckers with blazers, untucked, partially unbuttoned dress shirts and fashionably faded/torn jeans, am I the only one who wants to push them down?

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna push you back, since that's what I'm wearing today.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it's all so 90210

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

wait a minute, I'm wearing cords.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

and its always with those square toe loafer things from aldo or like.. chuck taylors.

I dunno. Its so damn smug.

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh, I like doing this. Does it count if I'm a girl?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, then you look hot. Guys look all Zoolander but you still wanna fuck 'em

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

if yr a girl i think that is incredible and i love it.

i love you teeny.

I just think its alot different when its guys doing it

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I occasionally do the jeans+blazer combo, but my look is anything and everything besides "slick".

nickalicious shops in thrift stores (nickalicious), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i was about to say. i have a midnight blue velvet blazer that only looks good with jeans. am i exempt from scorn?

xpost

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Blazer with novelty t-shirt, shit jeans and toni n guy haircut is the most annoying permutation.

ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I rock more of a scruffled look with this combo. I like blazers, they make me look like I have shoulders when I'm on TV.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

a question for mary, felicity, phil-two et al.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Lauren!!!

:-)

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Sunjammerr kisses girls' butts.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

this is very true.

but frreal
its totally different when a girl does the blazer thing then when a guy does
its a fact.

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

If the blazer is velvet and the wearer isn't full of himself, it's excusable. Otherwise, total dud.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the worst is when all the clothes are obviously NOT bought thrift.. so the outfit cost the guy like $300.00 or whatever.
not fooling anybody.

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It is kind of Seinfeld-ish on men.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

full suit with 3 button blazer and skinny tie and shaggy-ish messy hair is hot

but anything short of that just looks kinda lame to me.

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Blazer with novelty t-shirt, shit jeans and toni n guy haircut is the most annoying permutation.

Strokes to thread!

Aaron A., Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

90201, 1989? nah james dean did it first.
it's a great look

kephm, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I like blazers, they make me look like I have shoulders when I'm on TV.

aren't you a stand-up comic? You're supposed to wear bright colored baggy shirts and tennis shoes. At least roll the sleeves up on that blazer.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

indeed it is mandatory garb for complaining about airplane food

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

it really depends. i know exactly what kind of style sj is complaining about, and i agree that it can be foul. james dean is obviously not foul, though, so where does that leave us? fellows, exercise caution with the blazers!

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha

i prefer straight up sportswear

polo shirts, track jackets, sweat bands and hi top trainers
soooooooooooo fresh

lauren has a good point. I was being unfair with the whole thing... it can sometimes look really good. . .But i always like it when the shirt is tucked in and there's a nice belt present. its really a fine line.

I feel the same way about trucker caps.

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

J Depp in Once Upon a Time in Mexico rocking that mandatory maverick CIA agent garb of pinstripe suit jacket and t-shirt saying 'I'm With Stupid' or 'Chest Inspection Agency' looked pretty good.

ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

now that i can not smoke when i go out to clubs i can wear the blazer and not be afraid of ciggy holes and ruin

kephm, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I rock more of a scruffled look with this combo.

This is my favorite sentence ever.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The most I've spent on a blazer yet is $5.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i am really conflicted about hipster fashion in general. i actually think a lot of it looks good *on the right people*, but then i have this guilt about cherry-picking what works for me from the overall hipster dress code.

i dunno, life seems too short to be worrying about this sort of thing, doesnt it? i can't imagine ever outright hating someone based on what they were wearing.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i never hate, but sometimes i cant hep but make judgements

i have ice cream now too

sunnnnnnnnnnn, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, that looks shitty.
I go for more of an almost Lyle Lovett look. Or something.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, he looks pretty insufferable.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(and yet he seems to have gotten the girl.)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

he's only captured her..
he sprays out a gas from his mouth that makes people pass out
he's spraying it in that pic
and the girl is just coming to

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

So this guy, he stole your girl (or the girl you wanted to be yours) so now you're the Charles Bronson of the Fashion Police?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

no.

he just looks like a asshole thats all.

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And he's sticking it to the girl you want to squeeze. It's okay to admit it.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

she does look a bit groggy.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yea, i already said no.
he just looks like an asshole..

but umm.. keep pushing that point cos its working out really well right now.

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's pretty hard to wear this and not look like or be a doofus or both.
even worse if one or the other is corduroy.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yea.. those are really the lowest of the low in that respect.

sunjammerr, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

the only dads should wear the elbow-patch kind.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"the only dads"? I've never heard of them, what do they sound like?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

In theory, I am pro sportscoat with jeans, but it rarely looks good when someone actually wears it, especially with blue jeans, especially on me.

Lee G (Lee G), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I wear this. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I pull it off. The thing is, I live in L.A. where if you wear a full suit, people think you're a salesman. The jeans have to be dark, even black (white jeans *can* work, but it's tricky). They also look good with camper type leather tennis shoes/trainers.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

or perhaps those gucci trainers you posted on some other thread? i dream about those.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, those were awesome. I found some Adidas in light brown leather at an outlet which are perfect with everything! (I'll try to find a pic).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah. i saw those.

those are hot trainers.
super dark jeans and like a really bright shirt and maybe like a headband and thats ok sometimes

but u gotta look fresh

stan smiths work, so do italias or viennas.. adidas is putting out some great shit right now

or even like... a nice minty pair of hi top nike blazers or dunks

sunajmmer1, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

why do women's athletic shoes have to be so ugly? this is a source of deep frustration for me.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

lauren: nike put out some really great plaid mid blazers with a bright pink swoosh
also, asics tigers are really really nice for girls

and my adidas viennas or loafers
i can't decide

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i like those Adidas Spencer, but do they really need that white line? hmmm

The white line is rubber and gets slightly darker and work, they are my favorite shoes ever (except for low black dress boots). They're houndstooth lined!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I was talking to sunjammerr.

I used to work at an advertising agency where dressing down was kind of the norm. The more I hated it there, the more I would wear suits and ties to work while everyone else was in jeans and flip flops and whatever. I even had someone get visibly angry with me for doing it, but I left soon after that.

I miss my company phone and benefits, though. :(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Amst, trust me, all of the decent corduroy jackets in Chicago are held hostage at that one place on Milwaukee and marked at like $125 each. I found a great one down the street at Una Mae’s Freak Boutique (okay yes, but it’s not like I named the place) right before I left, but who knows what’s going down now. On the bright side, all of yr major chain stores have started carrying poorly-made cord-blazer knockoffs for that OC / Death Cab look or whatever (even Old Navy; maybe the ones at like J Crew are nicely made), so maybe that means the actually-nice ones at thrift stores will come down in price.

One thing I have noticed about wearing (non-cord) blazers with jeans is that you then have to have nicer jeans to keep up. It not an absolute necessity, but I feel like the only instance in which I could wear, say, those over-fashioned over-highlighted Diesel jeans would be if I were wearing them with a decent suit jacket, which makes them suddenly look ultra-normal. Strange but true.

I wish I could have gotten a little more time with my hoodie-under-cord-jacket look before it suddenly spewed all over Manhattan—it’s really great warmth-wise, layering and all that.

i can just see him now. he'd have the day-old pube stubble and the shock of neatly sculpted shaggy dark hair and that well-defined jawbone thing going on. his name would be andrew or maybe aidan.

I spent $150 on a pair of fucking levi's this weekend, i should wear a suit jacket with them, they cost more than the trousers of my last suit.

hi guys! i love this thread and i love jeans & blazers (and so do the ladies)

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i was at the gap this evening, returning a pair of jeans, and in front of me was this man wearing jeans and a gray blazer (and a sweater tied around his waist OMG) who seemed to be pretty much evil. he was carrying a paris-hilton bag from the guess store across the street. it really made me think twice about rocking the pants/blazers. but i will trust my instincts. oh, and s1ocki.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Amst, trust me, all of the decent corduroy jackets in Chicago are held hostage at that one place on Milwaukee

what place on milwaukee??

they had some nice stuff at h&m--cheaper than the other stuff i've found, too-- but only one size too small. fuck i need to lose weight.

they sell a brown cord jacket at j. crew but FUCK IT I CANNOT SHOP AT J CREW.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

is the ragstock on wabash ave. (the one where you take the manual [!!!] lift to the second floor) the loneliest place on earth??

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ragstock has drifted south? WTF?

Amst, to rock the cord jacket, get thee to a Junior League of Chicago charity shop (if Mpls has one then so will Chi) and you might luck out with an old Brooks Brothers one at rummage sale prices. It is also a good excuse to meet debutantes who are volunteering but is more likely to meet their moms doing same.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

well, that's cool too.

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

no, there is still a big ragstock on belmont. that's the one everyone knows. the one on wabash is almost completely invisible and, as noted, you need to take a (manual!!--i cannot get over this--there is an elevator operator people) elevator to get there.

amateur!!st, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Gene Simmons wiping his ass up there with Kurt Cobain toilet paper?

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i think most cities have a big central ragstock warehouse that's the hub for all of 'em. and you can buy stuff out of it.

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

(Amst, the hostage-taking place I had in mind was Recycle, on Milwaukee, where you don't ever want to set foot ever: they sell like Old Navy sweaters for $60, which is amusing, since no given Old Navy item could possibly be more than six years old or have cost more than $20 in the first place. They had my dream-jacket there last year, but for $150; I very nearly stole it, on ethical grounds. Una Mae's took care of me, though. There used to be a place sort of next to Recycle, across from the Christian Barcaly [was that it?] beatiful mens' basics store -- frilly-looking boutique decor, but nice stuff -- but I think it closed down just before I left. [Milkweed, something like that? I was in love with one of their clerks.])

I don't like this look with a tie but other than that it's awesome.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 27 July 2009 07:28 (sixteen years ago)

Quit it. Would you wear suit trousers and a hoodie? NO.

ledge, Monday, 27 July 2009 08:54 (sixteen years ago)

When I was 17-18 it was totally the thing to wear jeans + Converse/Vans + kind of ratty shirt/top + velvet blazer. We thought we were styling.

This was probably the last time I managed to dress approximately in keeping with my peers while still feeling like I was doing my own thing, so yeah, I guess I miss that look, even though from time to time I'll find something I wore back then and roll my eyes at its horribleness. (Not GOOD horribleness, like looking at yr parents' outrageous 60s-70s clothes, but just really baggy shapeless things with moth-holes in, you know...)

a passing spacecadet, Monday, 27 July 2009 09:28 (sixteen years ago)

this is pretty much my default look. The thing is I find I have no other choice since I need the pockets of the jacket to carry wallet, phone, cigs. How do other guys do it?

Gigolo Grasiento (baaderonixx), Monday, 27 July 2009 09:41 (sixteen years ago)

Blazers are not the only jacket. For example

ledge, Monday, 27 July 2009 09:54 (sixteen years ago)

well I have carry bag when I go to the office but otherwise, yeah, jacket's pockets are pretty important.
and yeah, jeans/blazers is basically my out-of-work look too.
how else can a 30something guy dress without looking a bit silly (and I do sometimes !) ??

AleXTC, Monday, 27 July 2009 09:56 (sixteen years ago)

xpost

true.
I do wear other types of jacket, of course.

AleXTC, Monday, 27 July 2009 09:58 (sixteen years ago)

depends on the jeans and blazer to a massive extent

I for one welcome this new Nazi ILX (Local Garda), Monday, 27 July 2009 11:50 (sixteen years ago)

This can be either exceptionally hot or exceptionally douchey. More often than not it's the latter but it really depends on the guy and blazer/jeans combo in question.
