I've been playing plenty of Black Isle games, the folks who put out Fallout & Fallout 2. They've just announced that the Morrowind guys over at Bethesda are working on Fallout 3, so this in very good news.
So, I'm playing about 4 games concurrently: Fallout 2(almost beat), The Longest Journey(featuring too-skinny norweigan heroine), Icewind Dale(D&D DORK IS I), and Lionheart(what happens when you try to clone Diablo II using higher production values)...
how 'bout you?
also, anybody wanna buy a slightly-used gamecube or ps2? i need to sell my consoles & games in preparation of moving...

Also resurrected Timesplitters 2 for my PS2 - didn't give it nearly enough attention when I bought it. Most intuitive controls for a console shooter ever.
Bought Starky n Hutch DVD for a friend yesterday and got a free Starsky n Hutch PC game so I might try that over the weekend. Given that it was 'free' I don't have high hopes.
Currently trying to decide whether to upgrade in anticipation of Doom3 & HL2.

silent hill 3 - according to my gf - is good for atmosphere, but the gameplay falls off a bit when you realize you can run past most of the bad guys without ever getting hit.
prince of persia is GREAT except for the combat, which basically ruins the whole game. definitely repetitive, and instead of being able to kill off your enemies and move on with your life, they respawn several times. feels like a cheap attempt to add to the length of the game ("over 15 hours of gameplay" or whatever).

rome total war looks awesome. however, alot of those combat simulator games where you have to wheel your formations and rally them and all that shit gets tedious.
there are ways to speed this up. custom games, troop grouping and the time slider thing, etc

Prince of Persia = rub rub rub. A great "USP", some good graphics and some good camerawork, but a 1 dimensional and thoughtless game. i v nearly lost patience with it, except you can finish it in 6 hours or so. And when there is no replay value, pff. at 30 quid a rip off. buy it for a tenner and you won't feel cheated.

i finally got it to work, and the game is totally killer. a bit overly-difficult in places, but still fun. imagine a game where you can go anywhere you see on a map at anytime to go shoot things.

Fans of other Silent Hill games will like Silent Hill 3. If you didn't like the others you probably won't like 3. That said, I think 3 is the best in the series up to that point hands down.
Haven't played Prince of Persia, though all I heard negative about it was that it was very short.

since Interplay is on the ropes and Black Isle(their internal RPG studio) closed down last year, the game is now out of print.
on a positive note, some of the Black Isle guys(incl. their leader, Feargus Urquhart, who has the coolest video game guy name ever), went on to found Obsidian, who are now working on the sequel to Star Wars: KotOR.
The other Black Isle/Fallout went off to Troika, and are working on the Vampire: Masquerade rpg called "Bloodlines".

― ddb (ddb), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:55 (twenty years ago)
I thought THUG was a little too easy, mainly because I finished it. (I love skateboarding games, but I could be better at them)I've only got a couple of gaps to hit left, and can't muster up the enthusiasm to go and find them just to unlock pedestrians, or whatever it is. That said, I think the THUG file is corrupted on my memory card, which is a good excuse for playing the whole thing again. I'm hoping THUG2 lasts longer (but will be happy if I finish it).

Well, the PStwo is coming out in a couple of months - much smaller, built-in network adapter, and still $149 - so you might hold out on that if you care about online play. As far as PS2 vs. Xbox, the Xbox's graphics are a little better, but it really boils down to game choice. Do you want to play Halo 2 or do you want to play GTA:San Andreas?

Also it's (mostly) a set of tools and a set of challenges. Most of the time there's a set of tools that best match the challenges, but there are other ways around. The classic example of this is that there is one example in VC of the sort of thing I hate in driving games: you have a car with a high top speed and alright acceleration, and you have to beat someone with a lower top speed, but who gets there quicker. Fortunately if you've finished all the car-theft missions, you can park the fastest car in the game around the first bend in the race, switch cars, and VROOOM. So, you see, it's just like Planescape! Also, driving around shooting up people and making stuff blow up is cool.
Incidentally, Dan, you have an Xbox, right? Have you tried Knights of the Old Republic? It's quite reminiscent of PS:T in lots of ways, including your party members's fighting and bickering (and reacting to choices you make through the game). And some of the darkside choices feel a lot more real and troubling than running over people, blowing stuff up etc.

this is what their version of Fallout 3 would have looked like, btw
so, yeah, the guys who did Fallout 2, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment & the like are now working on KOTOR2. Should be interesting.
rumor had it that the mechanics of KOTOR1 were based on Planescape. Bioware developed it, and had previously had some association with the Black Isle guys on Baldur's Gate.

Also, there's a hint in this file, near the end, when you're in Carceri. In the warehouse, Look for the Ancient Scroll under a plank in the northwest side of the room. Put the Scroll in Dak'kon inventory. Now you can Use it, but it never gets used up. Max out all your stats, get extra bling-bling rings, max our your wealth, whatever you like.
is it cheating to exploit poorly-implemented code?
Anyway, the end of the game is great.

Anyway, video games wasting my life continue to be Gameboy games, especially:
Pokemon Leaf Green, the GBA remix of the original Pokemon. I never played Poke-anything until Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, and compared to that, the graphics and interface are slightly but noticeably improved, and I'm getting many more cool Pokemon like Pikachu and whatnot. (They might just be cool to me because of the novelty; I've played Ruby and Sapphire through three or four times each.)
It comes with a wireless connector, but currently the only games compatible with said connector are Pokemon Leaf Green and Pokemon Flame Red -- so that's not as cool as it could be.
Super Mario Bros and Zelda! The original ones, finally available for the GBA. The first Super Mario might still be my favorite -- I've never played 3, though; the girlfriend's got it but isn't done with it yet.
Star Wars Trilogy -- side-scrolly action! Luke vs storm troopers! So far, this is pretty cool, although running around shooting storm troopers so that you can get to the next stage of shooting storm troopers is a little repetitive. I dig the cartoony graphics, though, they remind me of that Clone Wars thing on Cartoon Network.
Mario/Luigi Superstar and Metroid Fusion are still far and away the best GBA games other than the above, for my money -- I'm just stuck on both of them, at the moment.

Still playing Arcanum. Some of the Diablo aspects are starting to piss me off, mainly b/c my character is underpowered for that many monsters.

Adam - Ratchet & Clank 2 is sweet sweet music for the soul. They improved the stuff you didn't like in R&C1, and they improved the stuff you did like. 3 should be out in the next month or two as well.
I understand that The Simpsons Road Rage is rubbish. Hit & Run is great, like GTA with platformy collecting things, and jokes.
Viewtiful Joe is a really good old-school platformer (with ratings for each section cleared), but it's only recently out on PS2.
Beat-em-up: yeah, Soul Calibur 2 is the shit.Non-car Racing Game: Has to be Wipeout: Fusion (though honestly Wip3out for the PlayStation is probably better)Japanese & Stupid: How about Stretch Panic?Monkeys: Well, Super Monkey Ball is being released on PS2 at the end of the year...
And they don't fit into any of your categories, but Oni & Rez are still completely brilliant.

speaking of which, I'm still playing Arcanum. this is the first rpg i've ever played deep enough so that your character can resolve a labor dispute, if you like.
unfortunately, the combat system is off, and the tech vs mage is unbalanced, but the writing is some of the best. they even included certain social aspects, like applying late-Victorian ideas about race & class into a Tolkien society. Half-orcs, orcs & ogres used as lower-class workers, given their own ghettos in some of the towns, etc.
also, your character gets increasingly sarcastic & smartassed as the game goes along. Fun

oh well. i'll still beat the game, and try it again later as a mage.
sloppy code aside, this game is great from the fact that your mates can be fighting a bunch of orcs or whatever, and you can run around and mow them all down with your mechanized rifle. TASTE MY HOTCHKISS, YOU TOLKIEN BITCHEZ. Also, it has pirate treasure, the aforementioned labor disputes, and overt _Fallout_ references.

The same with The Sims 2. In fact, it's even easier. When creating a family from scratch, you can specify that two people of the same sex are already "married" prior to any gameplay. (I put "married" in quotes because when it's between two people of the same sex, they call it something euphemistic like "entered into union" or whatever.)
FWIW, in both Sims 1 and 2, same sex couples also have the option of adopting children. In fact, in the Sims 2, the adopted son of the two gay parents I created shared much of their "DNA" (looks, behavior, etc.), just like the non-adopted children of heterosex couples do.

I wouldn't blame you for sticking with them but don't be afraid to experiment with party composition as some of the other NPCs are very, very cool (even the ones that suck) (you'll know who I mean when you find him, he's got a side quest that's kind of heartbreaking and seems like it would be totally out of character for him until you go through it).

BG1 is very classic and BG2 takes everything that's classic about BG1 and magnifies it by 1000.

Dan I, what's there to understand about racing games? VERY fun to race against your friends if you have any competitiveness in you and with a simulation-type game like GT4 there's a lot of skill involved and learning/knowing the course.

I like all the little cool stuff like being able to hold on to submissions in the ropes and shout at the referee after a two-count, if you act like enough of an asshole you get a Flairlike super low blow thing that can win the match. I've had some really good long matches as well but I dunno if it'll get too easy once you get the countering down properly.
There are some good new reversals and Bret Hart's in it. He has the proper guitar-squall music and gives his cheesy-ass shades to an offscreen fan in his intro. Lots of borderline sinister dating-sim type stuff involving lady wrestlers.
Lots of HCTP stuff taken out, like they just stand around after the match instead of having a big outro sequence, and the Rock doesn't have his mind-blowingly over the top helicopter flyby/organ intro entrance anymore (not that he should, really). I rented it first but was quite pleasantly surprised. Not sure I'd want to get an online adaptor just to get beaten up by the rampant leather jacketed, tatooed Id of some goth kid, though.

Turned up on Saturday morning, it got about 3 hours on Saturday, another 3 or so on Sunday and about an hour yesterday.
Actually quite easy to progress through the story mode (I'm playing on Normal), you only need to do half the goals. I'm at the final stage already (of 9).
Positives: There's more off-board gaming this time, or more use of off-board skills such as climbing (which I quite enjoyed in the last one, and adds variety). Classic mode is almost a whole other game, but I'm saving it for after I finish Story mode. The levels are well laid out, on the whole, and (pending the final level, which I only opened last night) are quite easy to find your way around. The cut-scenes are kind of fun, I guess.
Negatives: No driving this time. The additional characters concept is OK, particularly since you can do (almost) any goal on that level as any character, but the 'driving' ones (you'll know what I mean when you play it) are very hard to steer successfully, or with any real effect. There's nothing obvious about where goals are any more - you can open the goals menu for a hint about where they are, and sometimes how to do them, but the downside of this is that you can't 'switch to goal' like you could previously - and this can sometimes be confusing. The goals are very, very new-skill-centric. A couple of the characters have gone for design rather than playability, and it can be hard to see what they're doing because of the design.
But it's a lot of fun, as ever. The engine hasn't really been improved much - although I understand the physics does change with some of the unlockable characters, but it doesn't really need it. Worth buying if you like all the others, and probably with more repeat play value - the Classic mode apparently lets you play THPS2-4, and THUG1, levels using all the skills you have in THUG2 but having the THPS3 time limit of 2 minutes. The time limit adds to the replayability of THPS3, and going back to that I missed hugely THUG skills so this mode may be an absolute blessing.

what i didn't like is the fact that after my guy lost his soul, he lost most of his special abilities, and after capping the endguy, he ostensibly receives his soul again, but no returned powers.
also, Planescape had a better "Hero merges with his own estranged soul" bit.
still, much of the quality of this game, like in Planescape, is in the writing of the characters & their banterings. You can even buy extra mods that'll increase the number of NPC vs NPC banterings.
altho, i hope in future games, they get away from the standard combat model of "here, let's cast every single defensive spell we have before this skirmish" which you then rest, and repeat.
i curious to play thru the game as a monk, just to see how much shaolin-flavourings they added. I want an RPG character who insults enemies based on the weakness of their kung fu.

drive van to and from gang war between cubans and haitans
get plates from female counterfieter gang
pretend to be cops and blow up cafe in mall
blow shit up to prove to the biker gang that yer a badass
all really difficult!
Then my dear wife saved her game on top of mine, so I had to start over again.
freakiest bit so far = vague tie between the sunken ship near the stilt houses, which really spooked me for some reason when I saw it through the water, and flying the sparrow helicopter to the ruined stilt house to do the rampage & pick up a hidden pax0rage. The rotor got stuck so I was trapped! I got the ph34r, but then I realised that I could just reload the last saved game, like this isn't real life, right?
Plus, there's a company office near the ammunation with the firing range out the back called "rox0r"
Plus, I pinched this guy's motorbike, and he took it back, saying "hey i wrote the book on 'jacking, buddy" so i got mad, got into a car, ran him over and shot him, fucker. Heh.

Any time there's a sequel to any multiplayer game, thousands of people whinge about weapon balance and multiplayer tactics. This is especially prominent with Halo 2 because most of the dedicated Halo players hadn't played other FPS' with any degree of seriousness before.

The problem is, as with all these things, that the people playing it aren't incredibly silly. "The problem with online games is online gamers" etc.
Also - Red Faction, an outmoded FPS, which is nice 'cos the usual dicks don't play it, there's only a few servers and they're mostly full of polite and civil people.

It is still a lot of fun one player though, and you don't need a GBA to play it that way (although it is more fun). But mostly I'm just going to keep it around until GBA's are dead cheap, and then in the future be able to get it out at oppurtune moments. It's a keeper, in that sense.
In the same way that Mario Kart still eventually comes out when friends are round... but with Zelda, obvs.

Would you believe that the majority of complaints about Deus Ex 2 was that it was too simple compared to Deus Ex, people suspected it was "dumbed down" as it was an X-Box release as well as PC.

I shun anyone who actually enjoyed Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. it's the kind of game that turns me into a frothing racist (BOMB JAPAN AGAIN)

There's an extremely extended telephone cutscene between LBJ and Kruschev talking about THE IMPLICATIONS OF THIS NUCLEAR EXPLOSION AT A SECRET RUSSIAN FACILITY when it's nuked in the first part of the game by a guy with electricity powers. It starts with actual audio of LBJ, who is actually LBJ and not "President Ross" or some shit like that. There are portentious scenes with dramatic music behind this boring scene, as live action video of American flags flutter dramatically.
At the very beginning, Snake is named "Jack" like Raiden from MGS2, and has a mask and wig to look like him. For no reason, in case you were wondering. He jumps from an aircraft at high altitude and parachutes into the jungle, then removes the mask to some dramatic music. After The Boss defects (why did she defect? she didn't) and joins Team Evil Deformed Obvious Bad Guys, there's an INCREDIBLY GAY intro sequence straight out of James Bond except with incredibly godawful gay Japanese elevator lounge music filling in for actual music, where Hideo Kojima's name scrolls across the screen as many times as humanly possible. Then after that, you get briefed for the recovery mission where you're supposed to clear America from wrongdoing in this nuking. Then you are fired from a Blackbird straight from the upper atmosphere of the planet, as if jumping off a plane was just a warm up, and the game is like, "wait, let's try this again but try to make it MORE XTREEM." You even land from the parachute in the exact same way.
The commander code names himself Major Tom at the beginning, but then when you start the REAL MISSION FOR REAL THIS TIME REALLY, he says, "well I named myself Tom because it was the tunnel they escaped from in The Great Escape and the tunnel names were Dick, Harry, and Tom, but it turned out that the tunnel they escaped from was Harry, I even ordered a print of the movie from the film company so just call me Major Zero." Yes, he really says all of these things. And yes, he named himself Major Tom BECAUSE OF THE MOVIE THE GREAT ESCAPE. He might as well say "I also named myself after a David Bowie song that doesn't exist yet," and then Snake will say "David Bowie, I've never heard of him." Then a long discussion about pop music, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, an interesting up and coming band called The Doors, then Elvis, then jazz music, and then Snake will say "I wonder if David Bowie will write a song about someone named Major Tom."
Instead of changing your camoflagesfd for you, it makes you do it manually. The purpose of this is to draw the game out by going into pause menus. Switching to a nice camo for some area and then having to change to another one because you left the grass makes you want to give up hope on the whole camoflage concept and just go in cutting necks. Which is at the very least satisfying, but apparently not stealthy so they try to punish you as much as they can for it.
The save chick in this game is more annoying than ever, some preachy medic girl who talks about movies, including Godzilla which "is mostly fantasy but has a strong anti-nuke message!" Apparently she makes some reference to a movie about cloning, and Snake says "I wonder if that will happen to me." Wow how subtlely they edge these anachronistic references in there. Because Solid Snake is a clone of Big Boss/Snake, get it! Every single character from MGS1 and 2 have grandparents or other relatives in MGS3.
There are many scenes where characters talk to themselves or talk to characters who have left the scene entirely. The Boss says "DRIFT AWAY, YOU WERE NOT READY YOU DID NOT FIND YOUR EMOTION FOR BEING A SOLDIER" to Snake after he's a mile down stream. After Boss kicks your ass, throws you off a bridge into a river, and then says this shit, you get a huge CODEC call with the medic showing you how to use the CURE MENU. For lacerations first you must select the laceration in your body system menu, use antiseptic, then styptic to stop bleeding, suture to close the wound, then bandage it (then close the menu of course). You have to do all these things in the menu by selecting the area you want to "cure" (and by cure they probably mean heal?) and select each of these items and use them then move to the next item, apparently in a specific order. Why the game doesn't just say "you wanna heal this?" and then uses all these things itself is unknown, much like how it doesn't just change to the optimal camo by itself is unknown. Or hey here's a novel idea, just make a health bar that goes up and down when you use curative items.
At the end of the game, Snake is getting the Medal of Honor and President Johnson goes to shake his hand, but Snake refuses. I guess Snake is a staunch Nixon republican. (after the end credits, Snake walks into a voting booth and votes for Nixon.)
I like how there is a black dude as your equipment specialist, who mentions that he doesn't get hired by a lot of places even though he is an expert, probably because he's black! And then perhaps racism will still exist in the 21st century. Wow, that really makes me stop and think. Jump cut to Volgin groping Eva's tit and then zapping her directly in the booblage with electricity while holding her in the air by her throat. Special zoom in on her nylons as they rip open. There's another scene implying that she likes that sort of thing. Much like Meryl being juggled through the air by sniper bullets. Aside from that, every time Eva is alone with Snake she's unzipping her jump suit or changing clothes or bobbling her tits around in some way. Hold R1 to go into Snake's view, as he stares at her ass or tits or legs.
One of the last dudes of the Cobra Unit (the bosses you fight) is named The Sorrow, and is dead. You walk down a long boring river full of the people you've killed in the game as they try to spirit your health away and shame you from killing so many people in the game (even though all of them tried to kill you at some point), until the end when you find his skeleton and a cutscene about how The Boss killed him, which apparently made him sorrowful. So is this why he's named The Sorrow? Does that mean he only joined Cobra Unit AFTER he died and The Boss killed him? Or was he named The Sorrow before being killed by The Boss? Apparently, it's just a lucky coincidence that he was named The Sorrow and then The Boss (a.k.a. The Joy) killed him. WOW THIS IS GREAT WRITING, IT'S ALMOST LIKE THEY WERE INSPIRED BY SOME DIVINE HAND!
Throughout the game, Japanese food (and general culture) is mentioned as being superior to all other food. If you find a packet of instant noodles, GOD HELP YOU if you ask Para-Medic about them (her name is Para-Medic, WOW!). She will drone on and on about how THEY'RE A NEW INVENTION IN JAPAN (America invents radar, microwave, space rockets, the internet, TV, thrust vectoring, while Japan invents... instant noodles), and how they're so delicious, and Snake is like WOW I HAD SOME AND THEY ARE DELICIOUS, MMMMM and then the game insists that you love them in the description of the instant noodles. I've had noodles before. Noodles are the kind of thing you eat with boiled chicken and a Miracle Whip sandwich while in England. They aren't really that good. Anyway, Snake is eventually like WOW JAPAN SOUNDS INTERESTING. Follow this up with every character eventually mentioning some awesome thing in Japan or THERE'S THIS NEW MOVIE IN JAPAN and so on. Eva wants you to take her out to a real dinner "after all this is over" (I haven't finished the game yet but I assume that she dies now, since she said this). She wants perhaps sushi. SUSHI? Yeah, it's all the rage in Japan! It's supposed to be made of raw fish! WOW RAW FISH THAT FITS IN WITH MY SURVIVAL TRAINING (HIT X TO SKIP). This kind of dialogue comprises half the game script.
A crocodile. You mean... like the reptile? Wow Snake and game writers. Just.......... wow. Every time a character makes a statement to Snake, Snake then reasks it as a question. If the character then answers that question might depend on what kind of camoflage you're wearing.
In a further attempt to shame you into not killing anyone, you get special camoflage items from defeating bosses by draining their stamina instead of killing them. Even though everyone in the game will shoot you with everything they have on sight with guns or rockets or grenades or missiles or flamethrowers or machine guns or knives or shields or punches or magic electricity powers or ghosts or zombies or mean words. While they're at it, why doesn't the game request you give your enemies a stern talking to as well?
When you're in prison, the Johnny guard, who is apparently such a great character that he has to be in every single game, asks, "why do we have to have a Cold War?" Yes, I'm sure that prison guards in the early 60s all over the planet were going around asking their prisoners, "why do we have to have a Cold War?"
PS. At the end of the game, you kill a giant flying George Washington, the leader of -THE PATRIOTS-, made out of water vapor who flies around as a giant sentient cloud and reforms made entirely out of mist. You use the codec as a weapon to call a therapist and help George Washington talk out his problems. Which kills him.

I'm pretty sure that the dudes who made Xenosaga were trying to communicate that they fantasize about raping little girls, and that probably still wasn't the most offensive thing about the game. And it didn't even have a hilarious Chu-Chu crucifixion scene ("he died for chu sins")

Solid Snake: During those two days, he survived by feeding on the blood of his family to quench his thirst. That was how he acquired a taste for blood...Raiden: So that's why they call him "Vamp"...Solid Snake: No. Vamp isn't for vampire. It's because he's bisexual.
