Well, some misinformed forrest gibbon here was spouting negative comments about Killing Joke, and like Hastur the Unspeakable, when you speak ill of Killing Joke, their minions come to vanquish you. I arrived -- along with several cohorts from the Gathering -- to set the record straight....and decided to stay and make sure the fire gets honored, the standards get raised and the pabulum gets properly decried.

The controversy of the Strokes thread being republished bubbled up somewhere else on the web, and I ended up at ilm. I'd been aware of freaky trigger and I Hate Music, but never followed the links to ilm. I've lurked ever since. I only started really reading other boards this year.

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 September 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The worst you can say about Pitchfork, which truly cares about discovering new music and is often funny and smart, is that some of their conceits are the stuff of college English classes. But can you think of any time you cared more about music than when you were in college? Indie rock itself is a highly experimental, often embarrassing and amateurish genre, so why hate a site that takes similar chances and scores more often than it misses? Jealousy, of course, because it’s hard for some to fathom that some dude with a webzine has as much influence as paper that makes hands dirty. !!!

b) from a random web search

From http://ilx.p3r.net/thread.php?msgid=3080385 (the thread referenced below, i.e. the very first thing I ever read on ILX, was http://ilx.p3r.net/thread.php?msgid=1229121):

I was Googling around for Peter Schilling's "Major Tom" [in early March 2003] and found a thread wherein said song (or video? can't remember which) was mentioned. I saw the title -- "'I Love Music'? How basic. How full of potential!" -- and started looking into this forum some more via Google. Actually, what was pulled up were the archived posts from Greenspun, but at the bottom were links to the same posts, except resident on this newer server here. It took me about a month to become addicted to reading this forum, and then I felt the pull to start posting something. It took me a bit longer to figure out that there were other forums here, and even longer to figure out that this was a forum connected to a website (oops). I heartily thank each and every single one of you responsible for this forum, as well as the person who originally posted that thing about Peter Schilling's "Major Tom". 'Twas one of maybe five things Google pulled up for me that was in English.

B) I was looking for info on The Majesticons LP and found ILM. I immediately started posting there, and about a month later, here too. That was spring 2003.

BLAME CAREY!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 24 September 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

though I probably would have found this place sooner or later. I was lookin'.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 24 September 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I can see why ILM would be upset by the success of internet music criticism, since after all it exists only on the...wait, nevermind. That shit makes no fucking sense.

Symplistic (shmuel), Friday, 24 September 2004 06:46 (twenty-one years ago)

My b/f told me about it when it was still on Greenspun. He was having fun winding some 14 year old up about Michael Jackson!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 24 September 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

From the Momus Nick, who sent me mail linking to him bitching about Primal Scream on a thread somewhere on the old ILM. I think I lurked for about a month and finally popped up with something relevant to Creation Records, on another thread, only to be promptly flamed by Doomie on some matter relating to McGee's toenail clippings or whatever. Being flameproof, I remained.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 24 September 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

'twas the doomie/marcello poptones thread that got me here.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Friday, 24 September 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it's quite sad that it got deleted really.

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Friday, 24 September 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

alba linked to tom's freaky trigger article on belle & sebastian in a sinister post. ilm wasn't around then, but later there were a couple of threads on grey hair (tom) and the sexualization of everyday life (maura). i didn't follow the threads regularly until the pinefox started talking about them.

youn, Friday, 24 September 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing should ever be deleted! Too many whinging babies. I don't even like deleting duplicate posts that much just on principle. Di told me about it, her or Duane anyway

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 24 September 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

On another message board almost four (!) years ago when someone linked to a few Freakytrigger reviews Tom had written (Kid A sticks out, can't remember what the other one was). I sat there and thought "hey, this guy seems interesting" and checked the site sporadically from then on. Didn't actually make the jump to ILM/ILE until the following summer.

Jesus Christ. Four years. How'd that happen?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 24 September 2004 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I only came across that link by chance and it, eventually, changed my life in no small way. God knows what I'd be doing and who I'd be doing it with if I'd somehow missed it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 24 September 2004 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess Ned invited me here, or at least to Freaky Trigger, to be interviewed. And I stuck around because I liked 'Am I Cool Or Not?'. I thought this place was a fast-moving Style Lab and we were just going to post photos of ourselves in cool outfits the whole time, and be catty about other people's tawdry looks. Yes, I'm here because I mistook FT/ILX for Vice magazine, basically. I can still remember how shocked I was when I saw the first photos of FAPs.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 24 September 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I was searching for stuff about My Bloody Valentine and found Ned and Tom's "best of the 90s lists" on Freaky Trigger. A little while later Tom started I Love Music - and I haven't really looked bag since, but it took me a little time to get into ILE.

stevie (stevie), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

a (a friend kept linking ILE threads on her blog and going 'look! cute!'), b (to ILM, not that I can remember what I was looking for), and I think c as well, though no idea where the link was. All at the same time: it was kind of fate-like.

cis (cis), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

b) - i was googling for beta band stuff and found tom's review of their first album on FT. then i found ILM. this was in 2002.

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 24 September 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I got here via a link to I Hate Music & Freaky Trigger, but I can't remember where from.

It was the Rough Guides to... thread that got me interested.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 24 September 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

a) although I can't remember exactly who told me. Certainly somebody on the Sinister mailing list. Alba was my flatmate when I started posting, so he is the most likely candidate.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 24 September 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

b), although what for I have no idea. My first thought was that it might have been about Head Of David, but searching on them in here makes me think it can't have been (because I'm on most of the threads where they come up).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 24 September 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

a) One of my best and oldest (since 1981!) friends Andrew L said he thought I'd like this place, back in early 2002. He was right. I guess he knew about it because he used to work with Tom Ewing.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

My origins start in 1997 @ A.M.A >> Tom starts up Freaky Trigger as a webzine 98 or 99? [signed up for e-mail newsletter] >> Tom starts collective music blog: NYLPM [Spring 2000] >> August 2000 Tom decides to start up ILM using Greenspun >> in June 2001 ILE was born as a cyber-sibling to ILM

so c: from a link, but in reality a series of links

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

f) from a message to a mailing list from someone who apparently has only posted here one time. (Unless he changed his name..)

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

c. Freaky Trigger. Can't remember how I wandered onto FT, probably Google, but was intrigued by the pop-ist slant of some of the writing, amused by I Hate Music, and eventually followed the link to ILM. Took me about a year before I ever posted anything.

i think i'm A C D.

in the las tissue (haha, i'm leaving that typo) of papercuts (new one due this autumn!) Jerry the Nipper mentioned NYLPM and i thought "that sounds good". then when i moved to oxford, mr 'opkins told me that the tom e-wing had also moved to oxford and that i should drink beer with him. in order to have something to talk about i investigated FT and ILM before our first meeting and have never escaped...

i may have been partly responsible for bringing several sinisters here, sorry (to both the sinisters and the rest ;))

I guess Ned invited me here, or at least to Freaky Trigger, to be interviewed.

Was it me? Heh. And wasn't that the second or third interview I'd done with you?

it was either Ned or Barrus... or someone else on Star Chamber posting a link.

The first rule about Star Chamber is that you do not talk about etc. Not that it matters as much anymore, I grant. ;-)

Years ago someone linked to "Am I Cool or Not?" on a website I used to frequent...from there it was Freaky Trigger to I Love Music. This was all before ILX had become an empire.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

My answer is on this thread:

How did you first discover the joys of ILX?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Fiat Punto!

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 24 September 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

c) From Tom's 90's singles list, to Freaky Trigger, to ILX.

**Well, some misinformed forrest gibbon here was spouting negative comments about Killing Joke**

That was me.

At least I'm not you, Alex. There's that to be thankful for.

Ah, the good cantankerous Doctor. Actually, while you were certainly among the chorus of hooting gibbons, I don't think it was specifically a comment of yours that sounded the alarm. While you may not like the Joke, you're at least not an idiot (the same cannot be said for everyone here, hahahaha). Cheers.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I was here from the start, so Freaky Trigger I guess. It's all Amplified To Rock's fault really.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Freaky Trigger as well. Either through I Hate Music or possibly Tom's thing on the Shangri Las. I don't remember.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Since everyone else is naming their sources, its all Dudley from Dublin's fault that I'm here. One day I will actually go and see the Corporation in thanks.

mark s (mark s), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, I wasn't being clear. It's ama's fault I'm here. I meant Amplified To Rock is responsible for the actual existence of ILM, sortakinda.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Google.

Though freakytrigger. I dont actually remember the first time coming here, but I remember finding "I hate music" at the same time.

Elliot (Elliot), Saturday, 25 September 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Madchen left it bookmarked on my PC when she was staying at my house. It's all her fault. Though I think I'd have got here eventually anyway.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 25 September 2004 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Carsmile again - a link from his blog to ILM.

Has anyone on this thread specified e) yet?

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 25 September 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I was pulled in by the Vicar, eventually. And then I Love Books made me stay around. I still don't post much, but it's fun to watch (but not in a Sliver way, oh no).

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

a) It's all bloody Reynolds' fault innit.

First Ilx thread I read was about Jim O'Rourke. Oh, indie.

elmo argonaut, Friday, 25 January 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

I'm glad I found ILX when I did, was being led a merry dance by various consipiracy theory websites and utter nutjobs on various other forums. Thanks to ILX, I now know the *real* truth.

Ste, Friday, 25 January 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

My husband has been lurking/ocassionally posting for a long time and told me about it a couple years ago. I have no idea how he found it.

ENBB, Friday, 25 January 2008 14:32 (seventeen years ago)

I was Googling Young Marble Giants and came across the "Big Hits or Little Duds?" thread, which mentioned my website. Looking around a bit more, I realized I knew a bunch of people who posted. So I bookmarked it and stayed on.

rrrobyn, Friday, 25 January 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 January 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

this was when s1nister had really almost disappeared, but we all still had a picnic anyway on like the one sunny day of my trip. it was super cuet. also, i think the fap was for dave b's birthday? it was in april?
afterwards we randomly ran into marianna and ended up at a weird hat electroclash party where i looked like this
