which poster has had the most transformative effect on ilx?

it's ethan, for my money. (coupled with jess, to some degree).

but with all the omgwtf and roffling 'round here these days (this certainly includes me), jon is least in the running.

i'm curious as to how closely the accounts of other ilxors match my own.

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

All the ones I can think of have made it worse, so I'm not going to name them.

GARU G

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Collectively it was the "Indie Guilt" guys, but if you are thinking of one individual then yeah it's probably Ethan (or maybe Marcello or Mark S.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally, Kate and Mark S.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It all sorta blurs after a while. But also keep in mind that those who don't *seem* to have a major impact actually do in my mind, in that without them ILX wouldn't be what it is, namely a combination of many different things.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

C*l*m has obv had the most negative influence.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

it's been going so long I can't think who, really. ethan has probably typified nu-ile most.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

(if you hadn't posted that adam, you could've listed them without implying a value judgement)

and mark s, yes, absolutely. i was thinking of the rise of lowercase and lazy punctuation on ilx as inherited from the 'tossed-off don't really care about what i'm saying yet it's kinda casually brilliant ain't it' axis of ethan, but mark's 36ideasineverysentence ultracompression certainly fed into it too.

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I know.

Ethan is nu-ILE???? Jesus.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

in reply to ned: maybe i should've said 'most obvious transformative effect', but i think subconscious transformation is interesting to talk about too. dave q, i think, is a good case in point here - a favourite poster of many that seemed to have a limited influence, in the cosmetic sense anyway

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

He did change my lipsick choice though.

i'm quite proud of myself for having left that cosmetic joke for someone else to make.

less so the case with this post.

Thinks in polarities? You mean, actually uses the inevitable need of language to pair off into mutually defining binaries of semantic opposites? Good heavens, the.. the... humanity! It could be worse, though, he could think in puns, like playing on the double meaning of 'poster'.

HI DERE

sometimes i like to pretend i am very small and warm (ex machina), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah - well I guess I should shut up about how great I am too - seeing as I've been here since the start I can't really claim to have transformed anything.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

too too many good people to mention. it's always gratifying to see so many of them still posting.

bad = c*l*m. i wish he'd never found the bloody place.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

well, alba, i don't think that being here since he beginning precludes being transformative - it's just that, in tom's case, he's been relatively consistent in posting style, persona, frequency (right up until his recent disappearance), content etc, and it feels as if his contributions were foundational to ilx

m. (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(well, they were foundational in a very obvious way too)

m. (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing about Tom's influence is that his absence has had a big effect on ILM, I reckon. His ILE equivalent is Mark S without a doubt.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba/N IS ILE to me (and in a good way!).

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

N if you really are responsible for bringing the Sinister hordes over to Freakytrigger/ILX then your influence is very great indeed. Probably more than anyone else.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as being responsible for actual physical changes in the code (er, more specifically, for being reacted to by large numbers of other posters in such a way that the ILX demigods decided it was in everyone's best interest to physically change the code), the answer is Mister Jonathon Williams.

1) you are not responsible for bringing them over

2) you are flattering yourself about the glue.

That doesn't mean I don't like you.

Well, I did bring people over from Sinister, in the sense that I posted about Tom Ewing's (proto?)-Freaky Trigger history of 90s alternative music on there, before anyone else on Sinister (as far as I know) knew who he was. Jerry the Nipper thanked me for pointing me in the direction, maybe Michael Jones too. I have no doubt they'd have found it too before long, though, so in that sense I'm not really responsible. I'd kind of left Sinister by the time loads of Sinister people started migrating to ILX, so I don't know exactly how that happened. I think word got around somehow that it was some kind of retirement home for Sinisterines.

I don't really believe the glue thing though.

This thread requires you to accept the premise that ILX has a form.

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

i singlehandedly brought obnoxious west coast stoner culture to ilx late 2002

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

Think of the results if you'd used both hands!

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

i really think it's me.

FLOWING STRAIGHT FROM THE SURVIVAL SCROLL (vahid), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

This is a "OPO Favourite Poster" in disguise, isn't it? I don't think any one poster has made ILX better, obviously there are some I like more than others, but though they brighten up my day, I don't think they change the place substantially.

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

Where's the raver cat? I miss him. He wins.

Also, when did the official NUilx start? Can we start naming various time periods like a history book?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

as soon as we determine who this ilx christ figure is, we can have dates along those lines.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think it is an OPO favorite poster judging by a couple of people's lists. I am still not really sure what this question means though. I vote for the giant orange cat though.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

I think Ned basically IS ILX, so he can't have the most transformative effect.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

the poster with the most transformative effect will be the one who outlaws these lame-ass circle jerks. just sayin'.

Thank you, chaki.

When I was little, we had fake transformers. I don't know what company made them. Maybe McDonalds Happy Meals, LLC?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

I keep turning conversations totally dorky lately, sorry dudes. I never had a Transformer toy. I had Voltrons and they played with My Little Ponies.

That's okay, my Star Wars figures lived in Lego houses.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

My Star Wars figures lived in my dad's VCR. He wasn't really that happy with that.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Okay Mr Know-It-All, the point was that on their home planets they didn't look like that at all; when they came to Earth, they modified their transformed forms to better blend into the environment.
