A curious phenomenon.

Aaron A., Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Ir is, yes. Curious that their own input is by means of a picture, and not the written word, on a message board. Perhaps it's a means of having some sort of presence on the board, yet also maintain a distant aloofness at the same time?

AdrianB (AdrianB), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

i don't think ive ever noticed a lurker posting on a WDYLL?

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I know the problem is more complex than having more confidence in one's looks than one's mind, or just trolling for a 'YER CUTE!!', but I can't get a handle on it

Aaron A., Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I have this weird to-post-a-pic-or-not-to-post-a-pic inner dialogue whenever a new WDYYLL thread goes up. There's a feeling of conflict over what degree of visibility I want to have here. God knows I already post like a mofo here, and I've been coming here less than a year.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm kind of with Jed - are there really many such people?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 16 April 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Scores. Trust me!

Aaron A., Saturday, 16 April 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

i don't believe in trust i believe in proof, goddammit.

jed_ (jed), Saturday, 16 April 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

are you referring to people who only post onto those threads at all, or people who dont have time to make 68465148 posts a day?

Purple? That's BLUE!

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 16 April 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Ahem. As the owner of the tie in question, I tell you it is purple.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 April 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Either you're colour-blind, or that photo isn't right somehow then. Blue, I tell you, Blue!

Dave B (daveb), Saturday, 16 April 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

You people, I swear. The photo may well give a different impression but I am typing with the tie right next to my keyboard and it is a gorgeous purple silk tie, definitely NOT blue. So hush.

Aaron A., Sunday, 17 April 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

Forget that, it's about me and my ties now. Which since I'm such a lurker makes sense.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 17 April 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

furnish us with some evidence A.A. and we shall get on it!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 17 April 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

real answer here - they aren't lurkers at all. we usually just aren't paying attention before we know what they look like.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 17 April 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Kim got it in one. I'm imagining Aaron has gone "who the hells that?" to more than one regular, by the sounds of it...

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 17 April 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure I'm guilty of this, but I can explain! I started posting semi-regularly on ILX (after lurking for a good year) right before I came to University, when I posted some what-do-you-look-like pictures to get my name and face out there. Then school busied me up and I went back to simple non-committal lurking.

Though the "YER CUTE"s were a huge ego boost, which was nice. They said I had pretty eyes.

chrisco (chrisco), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

they say that to everyone, kid.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

We really like eyes!

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

This one time, this guy posted his pic, and his eyes were totally missing, and we've been haunted ever since.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:42 (twenty years ago)

I just wonder about those people who posted to the "Introduce Yourselves!" threads and have never posted here again.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Sunday, 17 April 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

chrisco, you ARE cute! i was just looking at some old WDYLL threads, and i saw your photo again, and i was like whatever happened to that guy! he was cute!

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 17 April 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

I just wonder about those people who posted to the "Introduce Yourselves!" threads and have never posted here again.

yes yes yes a far more common subset. i've said it before, but if your first post on ilx ever is on an introduce yourself thread, then the chances are very slim that you'll last. my theory being that regulars just start posting whenever and wherever they feel like, and don't *need* an introduce yourself thread to break the ice.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 17 April 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

Crisco you're the Donnie Darkoesque guy, yes? You are cute =)

If I have that wrong, please beat me about the noggin.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 17 April 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

I think it's because there are a lot of people who have been here a long time, and who are friends with ilxors offline. I don't have time to post very much, but I know friends read the board and will see my pix.

Actually, I haven't seen anyone on the picture threads whose name I don't recognize, but I've been around here a lonnng time.

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Sunday, 17 April 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

What about posters who only lurk on What Do You Look Like threads? Even if I had a digital camera I'd probably continue my vicarious enjoyment of the regulars' pix. Maybe I still feel like a newbie, because I started posting here before I began to understand ILX.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Sunday, 17 April 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Maybe lurkers are lurkers in real life too and are comfortable being *seen* and *not heard* - and are posting on "What do you look like?" threads to keep their on & off line personas in accord.

miele kitty (miele), Sunday, 17 April 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 17 April 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I know the problem is more complex ...just trolling for a 'YER CUTE!!', but I can't get a handle on it

no, im pretty sure that sums it up for lurkers and regulars alike. i check the wdyll threads because my husband, a regular here, always posts his photo AND i get to check what girls he's giving the cute treatment to. fyi - you're all cute but allyzay is 10 shades of hot.

im more interested in the psyche of the ilx grammar police and those willingly beat into submission by them. second posts apologizing for a typo or failing to capitalize a word are downright bizarre to me. they kind of enrage me too which is weird in itself. of all things to be ashamed of.

katharine (katharine), Sunday, 17 April 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Ken L (Ken L), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

second posts apologizing for a typo or failing to capitalize a word are downright bizarre to me.

I make so many typos that I can't possibly correct them all, but I do try to correct myself when the sentence I typed turns out to mean exactly the opposite of what I meant, which is often enough.

happy fun ball (kenan), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

I don't understand what you're trying to say there.

Curious George (1/6 Scale Model) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 17 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Count me among those who don't get the premise of this thread. To me the What Do You Look Like threads always follow the same script:

1) First post is either
a) Kenan takes a smoke break in a winter waste- or wonderland OR
b) Ken C cooks himself up a meal, say a mushroom and swiss burger which goes fine with red wine.

2) Sooner or later Ally shows up to
a) smoke a cigarette
b) strike a pose
c) try on a new hair color
d) all of the above

3) We get to see Spencer either
a) getting ready to go to the club
b) at the club
c) after the club
d) on a stay-at-home night, trying on new looks

4) Somebody named Nick is shown holding
a) a coffee cup
b) a baby
c) a guitar
d) none of the above

5) JBR shows up with
a) a new hat
b) a new cellphone photo
c) a new Full Name alias, the photo being a helpful aid to match the name to the person without having to look at email or username.
d) a new photoshop trick based on a favorite album cover

6) Somebody else is shown photographed
a) with a strobe
b) through a shower door
c) in some indeciferable blow-up close-up
d) with some infra-red spy camera

7) Various images, usually from Down Under, fail to load

[You can fill in the rest]

Of course, this whole predicability thing is not a minus, it is a reassuring plus. It's like watching a beloved holiday TV special.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 18 April 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

For what it's worth, in real life the tie may well be purple, but on the picture it is definitely blue.

The colour breakdown is around 90 Red, 100 Green, and 180 Blue. To be purple there would be much more red.

However, the camera or scanner has really warped the colours - for instance the skin tones are extremely unnatural, the whites are really over-exposed and the black is very washed out.

There is also not enough definition in the picture to do any meaningful colour correction to determine the true colour of the tie.

Results: Inconclusive.

Suggestions: Ned to send tie to an independent adjudicator for further detailed analysis.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 18 April 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

1. b) Ken C cooks himself up a meal, say a mushroom and swiss burger which goes fine with red wine.

I swear. I'm going to wear it to a FAP sometime just to have everyone eat their words. I was going to meet up with a friend for dinner wearing just that very tie last night so that way further outside confirmation could be had (sadly, the power went out over in Fullerton and said person's car was literally locked in by the apartment complex security gates).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Are you going to wear it with the t-shirt and denim shorts? That would be classic, kind of nu-AC/DC.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 April 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

10. Martin proceeds to flirt shamelessly with all of the above, as well as any of the other Women of the Thread.

Damn, I thought I'd cut that back hugely after some aggressively negative comments about my attitudes (which I don't take that quote as). I even try to limit the simple compliments now, because although the only nasty comments I've received have always been 'I think you're bothering other people' rather than anything like 'you're bothering me', it did concern me. Actually I can't recall ever deliberately flirting with anyone on any of those threads.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Martin, like half of the things that have been put on this numbered list of top ten things that always occur on those threads don't actually occur on 50% of them so I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Yup. Last night I checked the latest WDYLL thread and none of what I said appeared there. Except maybe a Nick with a coffee cup.

Hi hi!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

It's not inaccuracy that concerns me, it's that I got a couple of very aggressively nasty comments about my attitudes to women on this board. I'm slightly encouraged that they have only come from men, but they still worried me. It's why I completely stopped posting on the underwear version of the threads under discussion.

Here's a random question: are people aware of my existence? I've been posting occasionally for like 5 years now, and I get the feeling that only about 2 people have any impression of me (maybe Grady and J-Rock - both because of past and present geographical proximity). Although I did get Momus to befriend me on the Japanese equivalent of my space.

Here's a random question: are people aware of my existence?

Yeah, totally -- you're going to be the guy getting hammered with Grady and my sis and myself and whoever else in October. Simple!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:43 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, the tie is purple, everyone else is color-blind and I'm going to bed.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:43 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, I've seen you posting Super Cub

Hard like armour, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:45 (nineteen years ago)

x-post

Hard like armour, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yay! I feel affirmed now.

Super Cub, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:49 (nineteen years ago)

ned, color blind does not explain it. that's a red-green issue, not a red-blue issue. trouble is, you actually own the tie, and we have only seen a crappy picture of it.

kenan, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:51 (nineteen years ago)

If Ned needs to call it purple when it is clearly blue, well ...eggplant? is that a colour truce? Aubergine?

aimurchie, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:54 (nineteen years ago)

heh. There can be no truce when Ned is the dissenter, and he also owns the tie.

(Though I hope maybe not anymore... that's an awful tie, no matter what color you name it with.)

kenan, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 06:57 (nineteen years ago)

Hehe I only ever really post on LOST and Heroes threads... and occasionally chime in on a couple of ILM ones. I have yet to post anything on the WDYLL threads although I'm always thinking I should.

(that tie looks blue to me)

Roz, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 07:13 (nineteen years ago)

(it also looks like it was purchased in 1985.)

I definitely do! I love your handle (what a dreadful word)!

nathalie, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 07:22 (nineteen years ago)

I like Ned's blue tie, it goes with his eyes.

C J, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

super cub i know you. i mean, not "know" you, but i've seen your name around. i love the question though because i wonder the same thing about myself.

jergincito, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

deconstruct the psyches of lurkers who only post on What Do You Look Like threads

Maybe "What do you look like?" is the only question they can answer.

onimo, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

wear it tied around your head!

haha I did this on wdyll thread

nickalicious, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

dude what the fuck is your problem.

jessie monster, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

;_;

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

This is just how he flirts Jessie. Pay him no mind.

kv_nol, Thursday, 5 April 2007 08:37 (eighteen years ago)

Next he'll start pulling your hair and calling you names. Finally you'll get a badly made Valentine's Card and an awkward lunge. Try not to judge him too badly.

kv_nol, Thursday, 5 April 2007 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

like Ned's blue tie

I misread this as blue tits. WTF is wrong with me?

nathalie, Thursday, 5 April 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

Nothing, I mean, at least you didn't think they were purple tits.
