As I say, Maxwell has turned into (or always was) Ray Winstone out of the film "SCUM" !!!

Time for a new thread.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

I didn't think it was possible to dislike anyone more than I hate Maxwell, but Craig has managed to knock him off the top spot! GET ONE BACKBONE! You bitched, you got caught [out there] so deal with it.
I hate the way he talks too. argh!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

craig is so funny though, a total child.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

Also, Sam to go. I don't think I've heard her speak apart from when she's in the diary room.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 07:48 (twenty years ago)

And even there she doesn't so much speak as grunt monosyllabically, that syllable usually being "sex".

Trouble with letting all the housemates hear the crowd reactions last week is that Maxwell now knows he's the most popular and thus has leeway to say things like this.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

Do people really like him though? I know people exactly like him irl, those beer boys about town who shop in Top Man & say "off the hook" to everything. My God what a twat.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

who shop in Top Man & say "off the hook" to everything

but it's the one place where it's applicable...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

his name is carlin, mark, belive it or not.
-- N_RQ (bl0cke...) (webmail), June 15th, 2005 8:42 AM. (link)

What, the character in "SCUM" ?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

Max, Carlin? Hmmm....

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

but it's the one place where it's applicable...

It's not acceptable anyway Stevem, I believe Top Man workers say "off the peg"

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

yup, markello carlin.

N_Rq, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

Max, Carlinish?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking more...

haha!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

he's a total twat, but then again he reminds me of at least four or five people i know and quite like. being a dick isn't necessarily reason enough to dislike someone.

stelf)xxxxx, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

Isn't it?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

I'd like Maxwell to die soon please. He's making this year near-unwatchable for me, for the first time ever :(

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm not following anywhere near as closely as I did last week with the bullying scenario but I may have some good gossip from workmate writing this year's BB book which will be collected tonight at club, if he's there. Also at work we discussed Derek's uncanny resemblance to fashion queen we know who is also totally trying to be West Indian stately homo. In fact we reckoned the guy actually knows Derek socially.

Also HELLO unfortunately Craig is nowhere near as stupid (despite mantits and NFN accent) as people think.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

i think maxwell is okay. good luck to him, i say.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Haha, that boy is so gay it hurts!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

hear hear. he's actually made me laugh a few times. i still really shouldn't be watching this.

off-topic: suzy, can you do me a favour please and drop me an email at d@vestelf0x@yah00.co.uk (sub all obvious 0s and @s for os and as) please, i need a quick word. thanks in advance.

stelf)xxxxx, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:34 (twenty years ago)

suzy, craig has NEVER READ A BOOK and is proud of this (probably untrue) fact. having said this i think he's reallyreallyreally stupid, so maybe he's only reallyreally stupid...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

I think he's only really stupid.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Also HELLO unfortunately Craig is nowhere near as stupid (despite mantits and NFN accent) as people think.

He may not be stupid, but damn he is irritating. Having said that, being shocked when he was called "camp" can't have been the brightest thing evah! Kamal, is a queen, but Craig is [glasto thread]Camp Sausage[/glasto thread] if ever I saw it.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

People like Craig don't learn to be manipulative from books. He attaches to someone more likely to be in the firing line than him, which is hardly rocket science but seems to be working a treat.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

I am surprised he wasn't in more nominations.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

My point exactly - other more irritating housemates are ahead of him in the queue. He merely switched from egging on one week's nominees to egging on the next week's nominees.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:45 (twenty years ago)

He strikes me as someone who has lived in a very small world until now, is v.naive, is an appalling judge of character, makes bad alliances and has no idea about a successful strategy for winning at all. However, I find him v.entertaining to watch, so I hope suzy is right and he stays in till the end.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

the subject of a distressing dido.

I read that as dildo at first :-/

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

Although he wasn't conscious for any part of the oral ordeal, Anthony's pals were more than happy to fill him in the next morning.

Pink, it's worse: Craig's from Cromer. NFN = Normal For Norfolk: doctors working in hospitals up there got in trouble back in the day for using the acronym on patients' charts.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

"distressing dido"?????

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I understand that she's distresing, but I don't see what this has to do with having a cock in your mouth.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Pink, it's worse: Craig's from Cromer. NFN = Normal For Norfolk: doctors working in hospitals up there got in trouble back in the day for using the acronym on patients' charts.

Haha, classic!

X-post

apparently stuffing a cock in Dido's mouth is the only way to get her to shut up!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

I like Dido.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

My mad aunt - so mad, there was a TV documentary about her - is from Cromer.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

it's what all the kids are syaing lex. 'she gave me a dido'.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

the norfolk accent is worst in the country. it is impossible to sound intelligent if you have one. old boys there actually manage to speak entire sentences without consonants. when we moved there from liverpool when i was about 10, i couldn't believe what i was hearing.

stelf)xxxx, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Lesley appears on Digital Spy, to face her mockers: http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/showthread.php?threadid=233216

AdrianB (AdrianB), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Haha! I love it when BB contestants come out of the house & have a go at people for having opinions about them. I think it's about time that BB stopped being friendly with people in the diary room.

Any number of BB contestants: Big bruthaa, I just can't face it anymore, I didn't realise that people would be so nasty to me.
BB Get ONE clue!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

I suspect that is not Lesley. Surely she'd have better things to do?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

Lesley appeared to be cleverer than Craig - that chat with Sam was a masterpiece of manipulation - but he's still there, she's not. So perhaps the Norfolk Lad has something about him after all.

That said, considering he came onto Big Brother to "SAY WHAT HIS SALON NEEDED TO SAY ABOUT HAIRDRESSING, AND GET HIS VIEWS ON MULLETS ACROSS TO THE WROLD" he hasn't been very fortcoming on the subject.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Well, she could be checking out the boards she might have looked at previous years. She seems to like a good old fashioned "you're a loser" "no, you're a loser" argument rather than a series of reasoned and thought out responses to opposing points of view type argument.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

Craig and Lesleh tag-teamed Sam in that chat. Lesleh held her hand but Craig called her a slapper and appeared to get away with it.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

I liked what Craig said last night, "I just came in here to destress." Er dude, you should have just gone to Tenerife of something!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

destress or distress?

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:39 (twenty years ago)

DEstress

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Maxwell is such a fucking asshole, I don't even know where to start. At Derek yesterday "SHUTUP, YER AN OLD MAN, SHUT IT", not to mention his friend on Friday, "VAUGHANY".

"Vote for Maxwell, even if you ain't an Arsenal fan, huhhuh, cos he's gonna haveiroff wiv saskia innit and she's got massive knockaz"

And then Saskia calling Roberto a chauvinist pig, presumably it's only offensive when they aren't praising your massive tits

And Craig MUST GO, he is a pathetic loser, constantly going on about what a bitch he is with Lesley and then he blubs everytime anyone says boo to him.

Science or Derek must win, the only remotely likeable characters in there.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Makosi's still likeable.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

It says Ronan's name, but I'm sure I just typed that post! haha.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

pp if i ever end up like maxwell i give you permission to assassinate me.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm there M, but I am almost, nay certain that you will never end up like Maxwell!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

ronan how could anyone POSSIBLY like Derek?

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

he really is dreadful.

stelfox, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

ronan, that is, not derek...

stelfox, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

he's fucking hilarious! it's all relative in the BB house and I am fairly sure I have more in common with Derek than any of the rest of them, and I'm not Irish aristocracy or anything. I suspect that might be true for alot of us.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

If Kenneth Williams had lived long enough to go on Celebrity Big Brother, he'd be exactly like Derek.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

kidding obviously, but derek is kind of compellingly dreadful - and all the poetry spouting is quite spectacular.

stelf)xxxx, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

I like Derek. For all his pretentions, he's at least closer to what I'd consider a civilised human being than vermin like Maxwell or Saskia.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

Indeed he would. Derek makes me laugh without pissing me off.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah noodle vague otm.

I like Makosi too actually though she never says anything.

And Sam does say stuff, on the live feed the other night she thought the Pyramids were in Thailand.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:56 (twenty years ago)

I was interested by the Derek/Craig/Roberto chat the other day that got them barred from making nominations: it struck me as *exactly* the kind of conversation that Derek probably has every day whilst wandering round Tory Central Office or his local Conservative Club; but which he can't get away with when everything he says is being taped.

(I don't think anyone ever associated with the Monday Club ever deserves to win anything, ever; maybe I just don't like the almost-far-right.)

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

> craig has NEVER READ A BOOK

that whole list of the inmate's favourite films, tv and books on the BB website makes me cringe.

an example:
Film: Sat Night Fever
TV Show: Match Of The Day
Book: Roy Keane's Biog
Food: Chicken Fried Rice

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

i don't see any big problem with maxwell, compared with derek anyway. in the flesh i think they'd both piss me off a lot. but derek i think is the more sinister character, and nastier with it. maxwell may not be 'romancing' saskia in the way ilxorz think this ought to be done (cf a gazillion 'why don't nice girls like me, i make such good tapes' threads) but i kind of admire his panache.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

I like all those things! Except chicken fried rice. And I've never actually seen Sat Night Fever or read Roy Keane's book, but I want to.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

how was derek involved in the monday club?!?!?! wtf!

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

Nothing to do with Saskia, really. He comes across as a bully and an utterly self-centred wanker. And by self-centred I don't mean vain, I mean "could not give a shit about any other person".

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

I think the problem is people like Derek only make our life miserable behind closed doors, people like Maxwell make it miserable every Saturday night.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Derek was the first black member on the Monday club, N_RQ - do keep up!

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

It's like the difference between being a bit thick and misguided and gleefully being an utter cunt.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Maxwell courting Saskia is hardly the only thing annoying about him, he's a loud mouth ignorant boor.

Derek may be sinister etc etc but at least he has a brain in his head.

Maxwell has zero panache, the guy is a cardboard cutout of a man, to the extent that it's almost like insecurity. Last week as Lesley was being evicted and she said "Oh I'll be drinking champagne tonight" he actually said "fuck dat, get veh beers in, none o vat lardedaar bollocks"

I mean for christ's sake it's 2005.

As for Anthony, I'm sort of ambivalent about him, he just seems thick. "Don't get me wrong man, you're a good looking girl man"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

and derek's outro to the show last night was hilarious

BB: "How is the mood in the house at the moment?"
Derek: (deadpan): "whaaaaat mooooooood-ah"
BB:"The mood among the housemates"
Derek: "I hadn't noted any"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

I think the problem is people like Derek only make our life miserable behind closed doors, people like Maxwell make it miserable every Saturday night.
-- Dom Passantino (juror...), June 15th, 2005.

that's it exactly!

alba -- sorry!

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

This thread is so negative today. I was reading through last year's commentary on here, and it's much less despairing of the housemates. Is this because the housemates are objectively worse (remember, Emma, Marco) or because we're jaded with the show?

AdrianB (AdrianB), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

ronan you make derek sound like mark e smith there!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

oh I was trying to emulate his posh drawl, in text!

Roy Keane's book is good btw.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

My problem with Maxwell is that he's become alpha male too quickly - remember we have another 70 days of this to go, it's virtually impossible to see how any of this lot is going to entertain for that long, but particularly hard to see it with him and his cronies.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it's supposed to be really good. i can't believe derek was in the monday club. has he talked about it? with saskia?

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

I tell a lie - 80 days!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to say, Science going "hmmmm" and scratching his face with the pirate hook at nominations made me laugh out loud last night.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

The problem now is that they all heard their names read out by Davina and the crowd reaction to them. So Max is sure of his Alphacity, both him and Saskia have twigged that doing a Stu/Michelle will see them through to the end and the others don't want to say a bad word about them.

What is really needed is for some of them, any of them, to start engaging with the tasks and the like. Except Science, of course. But there's that much hatred between them all already that I can't really see anything they've got to do as a group working at all.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah they shouldn't have allowed the crowd cheers/boos to be heard by any of them last fri, there has been a noticable difference in maxwell/saskia smugness since then

anyone see any evidence of winner-preference by endemol yet wrt editing ?

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

i think they want makosi to last. reckon they had high hopes for sam. anthony they are soft on. and obviously maxwell/saskia.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

They should bring back the house-splits from BB3, they worked very well as a way of disrupting blocs.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

What happened to BB picking on the 13th housemate. Was it only for the first week?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

yeah good call Tom. also another housemate wouldn't go amiss, are they going to do the usual thing like that?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

They have to I think! I mean 80 days to go is still longer than any previous BB. I'd guess they'll put in two new housemates at once so the newcomers each start with a natural ally. But they shouldn't wait too long to do that.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

when has throwing in a new housemate ever been successful though? i suppose it offers some excitement, but they never do well do they?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Shockingly I think GINGER TIM was the most successful (i.e. longest-lasting) new entrant.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

Josh, perhaps.

Putting two more in = too many housemates, surely?? They'd have to start having double evictions or something..

I feel quite sorry for Sam, actually. Her crime seems to be to be slightly slow, and pretty. To be merely slow is, apparently, acceptable (see Jade Goody).

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Too many housemates? Yes but there are 30 extra days to fill - as it stands at one eviction a week leaving a final 3 they would have 7 more evictions after this one = 49 days. They have 75 days to fill after this week.

I don't understand why Sam is so hugely hated. She never seems to say anything though! She's boring.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh, its longer than before? What joy.. (and I half mean that..)

Yes, then, extra housemates would be nice. About 6, replacing loads of the existing ones..but then what would we bitch about??

Sam reminds me of the kid at school that would not really get what was going on, but try and join in anyway, unaware that she was being mocked (e.g. Maxwell "go on, Sam, sing"...). She'll do anything to fit in, but she isn't going to be allowed to. And now she's going to be voted out, where there are about 10 more odious people in there.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I agree Tom, she says absolutely nothing and just seems insecure and kind of bullied. Sometimes she is funny in the diary room for nominations.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

I read on another forum that according to a friends of hers, she used to get so excited & have laughing fits so much so that she used to wet herself!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

She's not going to be voted out, Derek is the clear favourite apparently (sorry Ronan). The viewers this year seem determined to vote out the weirdoes (Mary, Derek) given the opportunity, it's like they want the second half of the series to be boring.

I hope Roberto loses it and does a Sandy.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

derek is only potentially interesting. if he DID talk about the tory party or the monday club it'd be interesting. but actually he comes across as a petty bully with a ridiculous accent.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

He's hardly a bully, he says nothing most of the time, at least to the other housemates

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

I agree he's probably on the way out though, as my friend said last night, "black, gay and posh, does not compute with big brother audiences"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I read on another forum that according to a friends of hers, she used to get so excited & have laughing fits so much so that she used to wet herself!
-- PinXorchiXoR (pink{est}panther4...), June 15th, 2005.

Would that be Popbitch?? I saw that too.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Probably, although I actually read it on a forum.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

i don't think bb audiences have a problem with gayness, ronan. or blackness, really. poshness yes. but derek isn't just posh, i mean i have *never* heard an accent like his, not among etonians, wykamists (or whatever damn fool name they give themselves) or oxford peeps.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

I never heard an accent like Derek's when I was a Wykehamist.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Clearly Zoltan Karpathy taught him to talk.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

and audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle taught Maxwell

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

No I know Enrique, I agree entirely, my friend's point was that posh AND gay AND black does not compute with the BB audiences. Maybe it is solely his poshness that's the problem, I concede.

Surely Derek's accent is like stereotypical posh person voice? reminds me of playing Mr Pickwick in a school play.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Yes but no actual posh people speak like that, or very very few. It's people's idea of a posh voice.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

He's a bit like Don Warrington in Rising Damp, accentwise.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

my favourite moment so far was when sam was cooking and she calls roberto and derek to have a taste, and they say "ok it's fine" so sam says, "cool, you can go now, i'll dish up."

derek: "'you can go now'?? 'YOU CAN GO NOW'????? what a stupid thing to say! this space belongs to us all - i believe i shall stay to watch you dish up!"

sam: "are you just joking?"

derek: "no i am NOT "just joking". jokes are not my suit."

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah that was hilarious.

Tom yeah I agree it's a bit textbook, but surely some posh people do speak that way? It's not that weird a voice is it?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

i don't think bb audiences have a problem with gayness, ronan. or blackness

Isn't Tickle still the only black housemate to have survived being up for eviction (when not up another black housemate, because Darren survived over Melanie in BB1)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

derek's outro last night reminded me in a way of gareth *ducks*

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Sam is a very quiet girl but she is increasingly joining in more in the conversations, esp with Makosi, with whom she's formed a quiet alliance. She's daft but inoffensive and hasn't done anything to deserve the over-the-top (public) vitriol. But being systimatically bullied has tainted her with victimhood, and though voters will punish bullies, they don't forgive weakness either.

Derek is articulate but stupid, Roberto is a nag but it'll still be Sam going on Friday (unless Derek really fucks up ala Lesley).

dm, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Victor survived a public vote in BB5, but I think that was against Ahmed.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Earlier Derek was saying that he wants to go on Friday because he's done what he came in the house to do, which was like, field-recon for the Tory party's mission to modernise and become progressive, or something - "I've put myself in the doghouse, I've mixed with ordinary people and made a connection..." Roberto points out that he could make the connection a lot stronger if he wasn't voted out on Friday. Derek says "Uh...yes..." and carries on talking.

M Annoyman (Ferg), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

derek actually said that? i don't doubt it's true, but DEREK, YOU STUPID FUCK, YOU DON'T TELL PEOPLE ABOUT IT ON NATIONAL TV!

no wonder the tories are so fucked. jesus.

right now i'm despairing of all of them. they are all total and utter fuds. the only reason i'm watching it is in case one of them goes beserk with a sawn-off gnome.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

(and because i'm a tragic bastard, natch.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I love Makosi and she's terrifying.

I also like Anthony quite a lot now.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

makosi is sharp.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Makosi is easily the most likeable person there. Also, she is teh hotnessss.

Every year at this point I'm screaming at the telly "where did you find these mouth-breathers?" but in previous years there was more than 1 exception.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

It's the problem with open auditions, anyone can apply - they should have better vetting procedures.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Oh I know that Endemol chooses the house-mates very carefully, I just think they could experiment with a broader range of personalities, maybe find some peeps who had developed emotionally beyond 14.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

But how careful are Endemol really - Sam, Mary, and arguably Craig, are ill-suited to Big Brother, and that's 3 of 13 housemates.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Considering they were warned by the police last year about provoking violence, they seem to be quite happy for there to be another fight too.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

oh, i was smoking crack all day, and may have talked some shit, ie that i thought maxwell was okay. hee is in fact a bibble.

n_RQ, Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

That's okay, I missed most of the first fortnight, I'm told his twottishness is just coming out.

Also, please send crack.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

christ. he was unbearable in the first week. absolutely shocking. recently he's been a lot more bearable IMHO, and i began to think he might be OK. but i fear i was badly wrong. (which means i was actually right all along. huzzah.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

science throwing that water at kemal was horrible. it couldn't have been any worse if he's spat in his face.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

I like the way Max and Sask both have cold dead eyes. I'm hoping for a "fall of the Ceaucescus" scenario when their power starts to slip.

I thought Science was quite funny until tonight, but I think it's just cos he's got a mental age of 12, occasionally he can be cheeky and loveable but mainly he can be an obtuse aggressive prat.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Is Sam an Oxford student or am I confusing her with someone else? Not thaat going to Oxford and being a bit slow on the emotional battleground of BB are mutually exclusive though.

elwisty (elwisty), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Oxford Brookes

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Is that like Oxford Polytechnic?

elwisty (elwisty), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Yes it is. Oxford ex-Poly.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Anthony looks quite well hung in those yellow pants. i like him more.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

I wish anthony were well hanged in those yellow pants.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

38 percent was funny.

Science was scary with the water. Presumably it was cold. I feared for Anthony, with that kettle boiling beside them.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, but Maxwell and Saskia are actually snogging right now.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I hope her boyfriend is skilled in some kind of deadly martial art.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

now, we find out why maxwell is such a fanny: 'e 'ad 'is 'eart broken, when 'e wuz seven'een/eigh'een

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

It is some seduction game, I see. And it is a shame to compare Sam vs. Anthony and Makosi vs. Anthony.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

fuck sam really is awful. she has no idea how to act sexy considering she's someone for whom "sexiness" is obviously important.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:27 (twenty years ago)

I like Sam. She's just out of her depth. I can relate. If I were in on Big Brother, I'd be a mixture of Sam and Derek.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

But cleverer, I'm thinking, watching.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

I feel sorry, for sam, just now.

saskia & derek were awwwwwwwful!

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

i think my favourites are Derek and Makosi - anyone else could be dispensed with and i'd either be happy or wouldn't notice at all.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

I feel sorry for Sam too. And I find her attractive. And the more I feel sorry for her the more I find her attractive. Which is dismal. For the both of us.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 15 June 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

just saw maxwell & saskia.

I don't know what maxwell thinks he knows about anything but I don't think he does.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 16 June 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

What madness is N's respect for Anthony?

Maxwell is an utter tosser, his mates were called "Vaughany", "Dawsy", and "The Grinch" on BBLB earlier tonight, yeah INNIT.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 June 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

maxwell's mates on bblb yesterday were as dire as he is. and they called him a sex-pest, much to dermot's unease.

sam:

until she starts singing.

In much the same way that Goering was the most likeable Nazi leader

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

Goering liked to party.

http://bigbrother.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds7876.html

Worst task fail ever, I'm guessing, and interesting that the Sofa Squad failed it for the group in the first 90 minutes. I wonder if Big Brother might make that detail public, to even the balance of previous Name & Shame tactics against Vanessa, Derek and Roberto (I'm sort of leaving Craig out of this as he sort of has a point about not really being part of that nominations conversation). A voting cabal of three this early on can produce a lot of unexpected results(see the Jungle Cats last year).

Sam now the bookie's favourite to go on Friday, and Derek's restrained performance in the Speed Dating task can only improve his chances of staying.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 June 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

Makosi is great. poor little Anthony doesn't know what's about to "hit" him! "come to momma!"

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 June 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Every time Anthony does one of his "I've never been with a black girl but I'd really like to" speeches my toes curl up in embarrassment. He so clumsy.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Thursday, 16 June 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

makosi is hot, but i don't know if she's great. why is she still hung up on this 'virgin' thing?

N_RQ, Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

I only saw this BB, for any extended period of time, for the first time last night and she's vile - mind you, they ALL are by the looks of it

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

watching it late last night was the first time i'd seen
sam trying to talk/interact with any of the housemates to any degree -it induced a strange mixture of disdain and pity.

her regular bursts of exaggerated laughter and forced/stilted body language looked fuelled by nervous tension and a sense of real awkwardness

she comes over as someone who for many years has had so many ppl approaching *them* and trying to appeal to *them* and keep conversations going with *them*, but never had to make the effort to do the same to others, that it's like a large part of her ability to reveal an empathy with or take an interest in others, or to trust/believe in anyone's interest in her own inner life, in any terms other than tactic-towards-physical/sexual, has shrivelled away...
and although it's a process that she's (sort of) a 'victim' of, she comes across as also being (sort of) complicit in it - it's hard to believe anyone could be so dense or lacking in self-consciousness as to not realise it happening and if one has the physical characteristics to do so, then at certain stages of yr life its a simplifying strategy adopted to avoid dealing with ppls difficulties...

saskia's questioning of derek was painful, it almost managed to make *him* a more sympathetic character. she came over as bitter, manipulative, vengeful, and hypocritical. i kept wondering whether if maxwell saw that clip he might think '...er,'ang about...'

if only:
'so derek do you feel THREATENED by POWERFUL WOMEN ?'
'no saskia, i have worked for and beside many of them - how about you though - do you feel THREATENED by women who use their brains for a living instead of being professional light-reflectors and flirty-chat providers for marketing purposes?'

'so derek you would NEVER talk about someone BEHIND THEIR BACK then?'
'yes saskia i would, because the ability to control the expression of our feelings and opinions towards certain ppl we dislike, but then express those opinions to other ppl we actually do like, is part of what makes it possible to form complex social groups, as opposed to behaving like monkeys - but then your attraction to maxwell already indicates where your sympathies lie along that spectrum.'

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

(Are those actual quotes, or as near as? I missed this bit)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen that yet. Derek is GOD.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

it's hard to believe anyone could be so dense or lacking in self-consciousness ...

Surely the two main prerequisites of any BB contestant?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

"if only", he said

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

er, the 'if only' was meant to imply that's what i'd wished he'd said...

haha dadaismus you are a scoundrel

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

"Great"? Can i just check that we're still using the English language here?
Er was that directed at me?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

No, that's only Snowy's fantasy of what should have happened.

Transcript is here:

http://bigbrother.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds7883.html

Derek is restrained and sensible throughout and Saskia comes across as a vindictive, bitter young woman determined to prove her assumptions correct irrespective of any facts.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

Well, aren't they all really young this year? Or did I imagine that?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

noodle, this derek-love is confirming all my prejudices agin nietzscheans!!

N_RQ, Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

LOL.

I find myself sympathising with Tories lately. I don't know if this is old age or disillusionment with the Red/Blue binary.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

Gay Tories vs. Busty Racists - some contest huh?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

You say that like they've had moral philosophers and theoretical physicists in the house in previous years, Dada.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

for a few days, saskia has been referring to derek as "malteser"

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:24 (twenty years ago)

Really? Ha ha. Loveable Cockerney racism, dontcha just love it!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Cool, another reason to despise her.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

It's interesting, I've sensed editing against the Sofa Squad in the past couple of days. I think perhaps Anthony can survive out of the three of them, but only if he starts to extricate himself now. Aligning himself more with Roberto (whom he clearly likes) would help.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

Roberto, isn't HE a dick as well tho?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Roberto is the biggest dick of the lot of them.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

Roberto might be a dick, but he's in a lower division of dickery to Max and Sask.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

> saskia has been referring to derek as "malteser"

that's not a patch on what he calls himself.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

He's allowed to call himself whatever he wants

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

for a few days, saskia has been referring to derek as "malteser"

woah! what's that whistling noise? why, it's the sound of saskia zooming back to the very top of my shit-list again.

i knew this max-and-saskia-are-okay-really thing couldn't last.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

i'm down with the roberto dislike. i don't think he's going though. it's the lady or the odd posh dude innit.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

This Sam girl - the upside down mouth is the root of her troubles

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Saskia's version of her conversation with Derek:

"He kept saying 'no'" Saskia told her. "Then he started using grown up words I couldn't really understand...but then I started killing it."

Erm... aye. You keep telling yourself that. From the transcript above I would think 'shirk' is the only word used that some people might not understand, and even that isn't dreadfully difficult, is it?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone ever see that 'what's wrong with these pictures' thing where a large number of celebs had their pics upside down, and its only when you turn the page 180 degrees that you see that all the smiles have been inverted? Apparently, children spot this, while adults don't until the page is turned.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

i didn't see it last night - what did saskia do that means she should be accused of being racist?

i don't understand the love for makosi - she's weird and not that attractive - she has funny eyebrows.

i wish sam would wear more clothes and stop singing.

stelf)xxxx, Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

Saskia said something racist in her original interview thingy, well more London taxi-cabbish - about asylum seekers or sumthin'

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

Makosi looks good when she wears sunglasses and more clothes

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

... otherwise, forget it

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

The only one I have any liking for is Makosi...Although in this case I fear my brain has been overridden by another part of my anatomy...

Anthony and Vanessa seem harmless enough.

Kemal is entertaining but too camp.

Derek is hateful and must be destroyed. If I didn't know already his astounding arrogance would mark him out as a Tory.

Sam...It really sad about her. She seems to have managed to just get along in life by being pretty and has only just realised that a personality is required for any meanimgful human interaction. I'm guessing that BBs primary demographic of teenage girls and gay men will conspire to vote the pretty girl out again (as they've done most years)

Maxwell and Saskia...playing to the galleries a bit too much now they've a clue of their popularity with the meatheads in the live show's audience.

Craig: I'd like the entire world to ignore him so that his pathetic attention-seeking antics would come to nought. His obssession with Anthony's sexuality is bordering on stalking (It's obvious that he's not gay and that Craig REALLY wants him to be)

Science: I have no time for him but it would be interesting for Derek to have his wicked way with him.

Roberto: Mood swing man...I don't like him but I'd like to see him stay just for the possibility of his committing a messy multiple murder.

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Science: I have no time for him but it would be interesting for Derek to have his wicked way with him.

Wouldn't that be great? Not only gay sex on Big Brother but gay sex between two black men - what would the nation make of it all? Has there ever been any interracial romancing gone on in BB? I'm not sure how popular that would be either.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

Melanie and Tom?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

I don't know who they are, sorry!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

I don't think anyone so much as mentioned the interracial thing with Mel and Tom. I suspect that 99.999999% of BB viewers wouldn't care.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

I don't know who they are, sorry!

BB1. Oirish farm boy and the future host of hit reality dating show Chained.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

I still don't know who they are, sorry! I think a black guy and a white woman is more likely to get up people's noses - like Saskia for instance

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

isn't saskia like half sri-lankan or summink?
this would make her about as racist as derek's membership of the monday club makes him one!
i don't think what she said was really racist, per se (it's a word that's thrown around far too easily here) - more stupid.
hers is a view that's actually pretty typical of certain londoners from *many different* backgrounds.
people might be surprised how many minority groups support caps on immigration/strengthening asylum legislation etc.
saying that, she's not the sharpest tool in the box and evidently wrong on this issue.

stelf)xxx, Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

I still don't know who they are, sorry! I think a black guy and a white woman is more likely to get up people's noses

whoever heard of such a thing! it's disgusting. jesus, i think you're being a bit disingenuous to the british public. i think all but a few old national-frontists in burnley or somewhere are pretty comfortable with interracial relationships.

stelf)xxxxx, Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

It's more like kneejerk antipathy from Saskia than outright hatred about immigrants, I think.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

i still hate them all.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 16 June 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Saskia say something like "I can't be racist because I'm a quarter Sri Lankan but I think immigrants are baaaaaad"?

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

She's not really racist, I mostly said it so I could use the Gay Tories v. Busty Racists line. Are the British public is largely comfortable with interracial relationships? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

That last sentence made no sense whatsoever

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

i get what you mean and that anwer is: yes, they are, at least where i live - then again, to be fair i've spent the vast majority of my life in large, multicultural metropolitan areas and surround myself with people i like (not being racist is a prerequisite for being a friend of mine!). still, in my experience the britsih public are, across all classes, not just middle-class educated types, much easier with this than anywhere else i've been in the world, especially america. how they are viewed in the wilds of norfolk or wherever, i couldn't really say.

stelf)xxxx, Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

norfok was always shorthand for cultural backwater to me. it has nothing to do with craig!

stelf)xxxx, Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Sam...It really sad about her. She seems to have managed to just get along in life by being pretty

She's not *actually* that pretty, though.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

She looks a bit like a tench.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

stelfox otm, i don't think many people, specially not the c4 audience, would have a problem with interracial relationships. maybe slightly older people would, though.

sam is ALMOST really pretty. this is her tragedy.

N_RQ, Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

I don't disagree with ya there, I was thinking, "How will this play in Ayrshire or somewhere".... of course, they don't approve of Catholic/ Protestant realtionships there! XPOST

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

She isn't very pretty, middling to fair I would say.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

have any of the women ever been that attractive on any of the BBs, though? or any the guys, come to think of it?

stelf)xxxx, Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

She would be pretty if her mouth was the right way up - I think she's pretty anyway tho

Shell, maybe?

AdrianB (AdrianB), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh no! Not in the slightest!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

I think she's been fairly pretty in the past couple of days with the pirate bandana on. Maybe it's a forehead thing.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Shell was definitely one hotness.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

There are many rockist/bigoted terms to describe others who are not keeping it 'real' in the eyes of their beholders. I hear them used all across the melanin spectrum and in London at least there is ALWAYS going to be someone with something to say about your skin colour or origins or class whatever you do.

But who is the bigger snob? Derek for hanging with Tories and having DIY elocution lessons, or those who point out that he was born on a council estate in South London? Also notice he DOES NOT mess with Makosi.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

in Ayrshire

come on. ayrshire's not that bad.

now, lanarkshire ... brrr. pal of mine got beaten up in lanark/motherwell/hamilton/some such hellhole, i forget which for buying a bottle of limeade. because it was green. this is not a joke.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Ayrshire's got nice bits but darkest Ayrshire is....... well, just never go there is my advice

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Haha I bet the person's actual skin colour in Glesga's surrounding regions is not as much of an issue as what foot they kick with.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh no, racism of all kinds flourishes the length and breadth of Scotland

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

... haha, there are TWO black people in Balamory! How accurate is that?!?!?!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

shell was quite attractive; sam definitely looks better when you can't see her posh spice hair.

N_RQ, Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Never saw the attractiveness of Shell AT ALL. I obviously don't fancy drippy red-faced blondes.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

yeah, maybe she wasn't after all. they haven't had many lookers on big brother.

N_RQ, Thursday, 16 June 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure I remember Mädchen posting about how the casual racism of her colleagues in Glasgow shocked her when she first arrived there from London.

eh? have you actually read this thread or are 90% of us freakish exceptions to this "demographic"?

xps

a black girl i know from ayrshire was recently "chatted up" in a local night club, when she went back for the weekend, with the line "hey, who said there were no good looking darkies in scotland?"

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

As was Claire. Sam and Shell are both cute in somewhat different ways. There's usually someone like Tania or Sophie or Saskia who are seen as attractive in a way by some but not at all by others.

Sophie and Lee got married I think (re inter-racial couplings on BB).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Apparently anti-Semitism is very big with Celtic fans these days, the Rangers' fans cover all the other bases

I thought they were pro-Palestinian rather than anti-Semitic? Something to do with Palestine being an "illegally occupied oppressed race, just like the Irish", or something. Rangers fans then started waving Isreali flags to counter the Celtic Palestinian ones.

I don't remember Berkovic getting any abuse for being Jewish, though he did get a fair amount for being a fair weather fannydangler who didn't like it up him.

Some Celtic fans have been waving ETA/Basque flags as well. Any cause in a storm.

Sorry for derail.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

nush and shell have become the same person in my mind. i really can't separate them at all.

sissy ... took me a minute to remember her. that's a whole minute of my life wasted, then.

Yes Gerry, and I'm Celtic fan too! Last time I was up my brother, who visits some big football website/forum had noticed that Celtic fans were displaying rather more anti-Semitism than was necessary - I blame the Catholic Church to be honest. Yes Berkovic, that "Eyal - born is the King of Is-ra-el" chant never really took off did it?

Ah, big website/forum type things do tend to attract a higher proportion of idiots (present company excepted natch :-P ). I have a policy of not visiting websites that advocate terrorism so I tend to avoid most things Celtic related on the web.
I'll remember to have a wee look around next season and see if I spot anything (more) unsavoury (than usual).

Apparently Rangers now have more colours/races/creeds on their books than any other club in Scotland. Whodathunkit? Doesn't seem to be reflected in the supporter base yet...

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

None of 'em, though Makosi did look great on her entrance.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Nush was a lot more twee than Shell, my favourite thing about Shell was her "actually, I have student debts to pay, so I'd appreciated it if you left" when the rest were advocating civil disobedience to keep Kitten in, despite the fact she was quite obviously the richest housemate in there.

Still, maybe one of the 7,000 tawdry baps out photoshoots she done since then has redressed the balance.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 June 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

re: saskia's prejudices, it's one thing to say that you oppose unrestricted immigration and leave it at that and another to say that you oppose immigration because all foreigners want to come here to bomb us, kill us, and call us names. that is near-verbatim the reason that she gave - she may have listed "kill" first rather than "bomb".

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 16 June 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

also, people who bring up minute ethnic heritage to justify an offensive/controversial pronouncement - total weak dud.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

To be fair, if I was a foreigner I might want to come here and bomb kill and call Saskia names.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

I just can't bring myself to believe that Saskia genuinely believes that all immigrants want to bomb/kill 'us'. I mean I can't really believe that anyone believes that literally. It doesn't make any sense, but then as it was a two second snippet in a heavily edited video introduction...I wish there would be expansion on it by her and this wouldn't be edited.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 16 June 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Derek is one horrible person, isn't he?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I mean, he's a Tory and a Monday club dude and into foxhunting and all the rest of it, I know, but his social skills leave rather a lot to be desired.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Sam and Makosi are snogging = desperate ploy for Sam to stay in the house.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

18.20: Craig says Saskia is the most beautiful girl in the house. Tho Saskia doesn't want him to say anything. Max just asked Craig whose the most unattractive girl in the house, he says Sam because of her haircut

Ha ha. I really do want to cut those stupid long bits off her bob every time I see her brush them out of her face.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Makosi is by so far the most attractive girl in the house that Craig's comments are still ridiculous.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

They haven't really got the hang of speed dating at all, have they?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

Makosi and Anthony snogfest = horrible.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Kemal + Roberto = comedy

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Roberto, that was awesome.

This is a great task.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

The cameraman was a bit excited about the lezzing up action.

Roberto was brilliant, that was like Max's blackboard as a turning point for my opinion of them.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Euch! No wonder Saskia has gone cool on Maxwell.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

"you're not getting my willy out, are you?"

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

(that was a scared Anthony to an increasing desperate Sam going for the C-man vote)

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Also, Max should be forced to inhale helium every time he wants to say "off the 'ook, mate" as it improves it one zillion per cent.

Saskia getting Derek to bark = comedy gold also.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Sam seems to have forgotten that people vote for evictions not retentions.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

OMG Anthony's face when Derek shrieked "I'm coming!"

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 16 June 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Shocking Anthony is becoming the house's favourite sport. The poor little lamb.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 June 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Sam's so utterly desparate that it's embarrassing to watch.

AdrianB (AdrianB), Thursday, 16 June 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I like her desperation. I somehow identify with it. I have warmed to her a lot. I don't want any of the people up for nomination to go, even though Derek is evil.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 16 June 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

I haven't warmed to her, but her desperation (lezzing, stripping) is amusing to watch and I like poking fun at her. However if it *works* then it's less amusing.

I think I would want Science to go right now, as he's being a petulant little git.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 16 June 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

I feel quite sorry for Sam now, she doesn't say enough to really be hateable.

Science's apology to Kemal "from my heart to my shoes" was very touching. They are my two favourites again.

Makosi keeps getting worse. Why does she fancy Anthony? Is she just really bored?

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 16 June 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

They keep talking about David Icke.

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 16 June 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

I don't approve of Makosi stealing Anthony from Sam. They are the two best looking people in the world and should clearly be together.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 16 June 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

Sam is rather ungainly for a reasonably slight, pretty girl she moves with the grace of a child that's just learnt to walk, she doesn't seem to be aware quite how her body works, it's like there is an invisible sumo suit round her. When she did that "lap dance" for Anthony oh dear...

"Ow that's my eye." That must be a seriously bad technique.

elwisty (elwisty), Thursday, 16 June 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

Science has this amazing thing where he suddenly shifts into a deep, old register from almost nowhere, like that "a place untamed" speech or when I just tuned in now and the first words I heard were "the kind of thing that makes or breaks a man"...

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 16 June 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

God, it's taken that long for something to register as a general/genuine highlight!

"What do you remember about BB2005?"
"Well, the speed dating, and um um um...."

Oh, and is it just me, or are the people on BBLB told "you have to say it's the best ever! otherwise, no pay"

I mean, it's not the worst ever, but.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

I mean, Chris Moyles, bless 'im, went as far as saying "I hate those people that say "oh it's not as good as last years, moan moan""

Which means, he gets paid, as he 'technically' said the required phrase.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

The bookies might as well stop taking bets on Sam, she's just passed the old tax threshold (1/9).

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 17 June 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

poor sam. her strip was desperate. maybe she should go after all. kemal has gone up in my estimation. him and roberto was classik.

N_RQ, Friday, 17 June 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

Free money again? I don't think Sam's hateable, but you find a woman that doesn;t think Sam is mad/bonkers.

xpost yeah, Sam's not got any more to offer unfortunately. And now she's done the lesb kiss, I can't think of anything else she could usefully do. She so can't cook....

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

She's also gone to 66/1 to win, the longest odds of any BB contestant ever I think.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 17 June 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

Nooh, Lisa got longer odds. Basically, any housemate that went way odds on to go, gets/got very long odds to win.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Really? Someone on the DS boards claims Lisa never went past 50/1 - which is roughly how I remember it.

Digital Spy forum member is OTM about why tonight is gonna be great:

"Big Brother Hice ... this is Davina ... you are live on Channel 4 ... please do not swear ..."

HMs sit around looking mainly smug ... Maxkia shoots 'evil looks' at Del & Bob ...

"This week there are three HMs up for eviction ... Derek (mix of boos & odd honking noises from Mob) ... Roberto (mix of boos & cheers) ... Sam (solid boos)" ...

Camera focuses on Maxkia, who sits, joined at the hip ... four legged abomination that it is ... at the sound of the Mob, the barest scintilla of doubt enters those idiot eyes ...

"This week's evicted HM is ..."

Camera scans faces ... Maxkia, with brain of goldfish & memory of 7 seconds, regains confidence & adopts hard as nails "see ya scum" look ... stares at Bob ...

"Sam!"

Camera doesn't know where to look ... Sam is grinning feverishly ... saying "It's alright babe!" to anyone who'll listen ...

Maxkia exchanges glances between its two heads ... incredulity ... smugness crumbling ... the beginnings of a rudimentary mathematics working in its stoopid brains ... which is to say ...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 17 June 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but Max did nominate Sam.

then again:

makosi: what are your 3 best personality features ?
sam: er, can't we just kiss instead ?

- this kind of coping mechanism could provide an additional test of davina's skills

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Friday, 17 June 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

during the makosi/anthony snog last night bb should have rebroadcast their microphones through to the livingroom/bedroom speakers:

derek: 'ewww, what's that horrible slurping noise ?'
+ the comedy possibility of the look on science's face

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Friday, 17 June 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

Can I just say again how awesome Roberto and Kemal in the Love Loft was.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 08:48 (twenty years ago)

What happened between Roberto and Kemal? Out last night...

suzy (suzy), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

heh, Roberto too.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

More!

suzy (suzy), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

During the speed-dating task, Roberto went up to the loft to see Kemal and put on a full-on seduction routine, cosying up to him, stroking him, betraying not a flicker of nerves. Kemal played along as best he could but was clearly totally overwhelmed. When Roberto left, Kemal gulped, fanned himself and said "My GOD! I thought he was going to snog me!" to the camera.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Derek then did much the same later, all queened up, his 2-minute date culminating in fake shouts of ecstasy. I am guessing that Roberto and Derek planned this twin assault together.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

Excellent.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 17 June 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

makosi really is quite apalling, with wonky eyebrows, and you are all mantal for liking her. she's easily as bad as sam, if not worse.

stelf)xxxxx, Friday, 17 June 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

she is a bit mental, it's true. does she even like anthony? why does she say she's a virgin? but i like her more than any of the others.

Has Makosi knocked you back or sump'n, Stelfoxxor?

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Friday, 17 June 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

nah, she's just weird and unpleasant. she's also not as attractive as people make out, either. i can't understand the love for her.

stelf)xxxx, Friday, 17 June 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

agreed. good figure tho.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 17 June 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

I don't think Makosi is an especially nicey nice person (though she was kind when it counted with Science). She has just got a lot about her, has a personality to match her confidence and is generally entertaining. She uses her charm well, not being worried about forming petty little alliances, unlike most of them: she knows she has the power to be above all that. And then there's her bum.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 June 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

aside from his magnificent seduction of kamal, my estimation of roberto also went up when he called out that vile tory scumbag maxwell on his ethnic stereotyping ("you're all mama-mia-where's-me-pasta")

andrew exl, Friday, 17 June 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

god forbid anyone on ilx would ever take the mick out of maxwell's estuary english/accent, or use words like chav or owt like that.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 17 June 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

yeah, totally comparable.

N_RQ, Friday, 17 June 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

It is, actually. Maxwell is loathsome, but as soon as anyone uses the word "chav", they become equally loathsome.

Flyboy (Flyboy), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

but actually most people on ilx don't use the word chav. if in the abstract it's comparable, maxwell's actual conduct was cuntish in the extreme, far more than the casual use of 'chav' you get round here . maxwell's behavious would be comparable to gettin in someone's grill and saying "you fuckin chav".

N_RQ, Friday, 17 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

maxwell's behaviour was comparable to someone really pissed off with someone else. it was childish behaviour, but i wouldn't call it vile. roberto flinging back "racist" was also stupid.

i don't like either of them. roberto more so, by this much: ||

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Fair enough, but I've seen enough people here defend their use of the right to use the word as a matter of principle. Let's just all agree on the most important issue: Maxwell is a twunt.

x-post: Why was Roberto stupid to call a racist a racist?

Flyboy (Flyboy), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Italians are not a race?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

he meant xenophobic. italians are not a race... but the concept of 'race' is problematic anyway. maxwell probably is a racist, btw, cf a few incidents with makosi. maxwell was being amazingly cunty w. roberto (i don't like roberto either) but iirc roberto was trying to bury the hatchet and maxwell decided to reject it for whatever reason, then act the cunt.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 June 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Roberto's problem (one of them) is that he is CONSTANTLY trying to bury the hatchet, maybe he should count to 10 slowly before launching into arguments / abusive tirades, then he wouldn't have to spend so much time acting hurt because people are upset with him and aren't buying his apologies.

Lisa Faulkner always used to be on the cover of Looks magazine. Her or Terri thingy who is Simon Cowell's girlfriend (though maybe not any more, I have lost touch with the world of celebrity dating)

Emma, Friday, 17 June 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

if someone is a member of the european union then i reserve the right to mercilessy rip the mick out of them - i apologise, but people are too sensitive about this kind of stuff (especially the germans - joke, for god's sake).
being genuinely xenophobic and actively *unpleasant* is another matter entirely and not in any way acceptable. i didn't see what happened because i was out. but please don't take everything people say 100 per cent seriously, especially me - after all i am the same person who once proposed that all french terms be expunged from the culinary lexicon and therefore am not really worth listening to.
maxwell *is* a complete pillock, but along with science, also a 24 carat bell-end at the best of times, he's one of the most likable people there, which goes to show how awful the rest of them are.
i would venture to say, however, that maxwell's "chavness" is exactly why people find him so horrifying. roberto is equally aggressive/confrontational and so is science - and even kemal and craig in their own way - but maxwell is a member of a group that the vast majority of middle-class/educated england still thinks it's ok to hate on where the others are not - that's why i stick up for him, that and the fact that he's occasionally amusing in a crass, boorish sort of way.
anyway, i'm erring toward anthony. i don't think he's been horrid to anyone and although he's not the most complex of people, is occasionally funny and has his heart in the right place.

stelf)xxxx, Friday, 17 June 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

I liked it when, after winning the box, Derek & Roberto were waxing lyrical to BB about the hundreds of thousands of homeless, human suffering, the triumph of the human will etc, then Anthony said 'I did it for me nan'.

Emma, Friday, 17 June 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

However Maxwell is about as much a cockney geezah as Damon Albarn is.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 17 June 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the thing is it wasn't done in a chirpy geezer joshing way. It was part of an angry 'I don't want to have anything to do with you - fuck off' tirade. It was like "And another thing - you don't even talk proper. It's all mamma mia where's-a-my-spaghetti"

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 June 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

there's something i don't like about anthony that i can't put my finger on. it must be a combo of facial hair, geordie accent and "i love lasses, me" that reminds me too much of people i knew at school

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Friday, 17 June 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I've just been reminded in a conversation on DS that Craig said the three housemates up for eviction all had the same chance of going on Friday.

Wow, I should move to the UK and become a production assistant for this show because this task sounds exactly like something I would make up.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

The BB website says Maxwell is an engineer. I wonder if he is a posh one. I love Science's new task too.

Maxwell is blatantly new money. No breeding at all.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

DBT = great, but ass Mark says, it's a bit weird to think that unless you come from a poor background, a blokey demeanour and a London accent are somehow fake. Times have moved on (thank God).

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

it's not about being poor alba. maxwell's accent is generally pretty rare (ie it's cockney rather than estuary, which is more common in north london imo than the classic cockney accent). few people at posh school will speak like that unless they really really want to. it's a pointless posh school that doesn't totally reprogramme your speech and manners!

N_RQ, Friday, 17 June 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

If Maxwell is putting on a geezah performance my opinion of him rises hugely - to keep it up so flawlessly for weeks is mighty impressive.

Anthony is utterly inoffensive and kind of likeable, except when he starts saying "I've never shagged a black girl, wink wink, knowwharrimean, darlin'?" when I want to punch him. It's when Makosi smiles and suggests that she'll sort him out that my affection for her drops some, though she's still my favourite.

My soft spot for Science is largely based on drawing him in a BB sweepstake. He's too irritable to win it, I think.

Next task: BB gives them a long list of scientific issues to discuss, in the style of Martian pyramids, please.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 June 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

i don't think it's that hard to keep up.. i know a fair number of odious "olright, darlin" laddy poshos.

De Beauvoir Town, I heard.

swanky! i lived in de beauvoir town for a while, in a council flat with bright pink shag pile carpet, an aubergine bathroom suite with oyster-shaped sunken bath and jacuzzi, fake wood beams in the living room and a sauna in the airing cupboard. i think it might have been a brothel b4 i moved in there. i saw a bloke get stabbed outside my window and the estate less than 400 yards away was a major point for the manufacture and distribution of crack cocaine across the uk and i once had a pretty vicious punch-up with someone for trying to steal my bike while i was still on it. i'm sure i'm forgetting stuff, but it was hardly a closeted, gentrified area where it wouldn't be possible for people who lived in the nice houses (and there are some beautiful properties there, worth a fortune) wouldn't be able to mix with normal, regular folks or even career criminals if the really wanted to.

few people at posh school will speak like that unless they really really want to. it's a pointless posh school that doesn't totally reprogramme your speech and manners!

I'm not sure what you mean. I don't know where Maxwell is supposed to have gone to school, but I went to a 'posh', (ie. fee-paying) school in SE London and plenty of the kids there were local (either with nouveau riche parents, if you want to put it like that, or else scholarships or assisted places) and had very definite SE London accents. No attempt was made to make them speak differently and I never felt that the kids who spoke that way were hamming it up to try and 'keep it real'. It was just the way their family and friends spoke.

I used to live around where Maxwell lives and loads of people talk like him, unless I'm cloth-eared.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 17 June 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

If anyone has ever heard me speak, I can verify what Alba said. I went to a "posh school", but I was a scholarship kid (I am guessing that Maxwell was a nouveau riche kid, he's not displayed any great intelligence, but then again, neither do I these days), and no-one ever taught me to "speak proper".

Not sure if this has been talked about before but has the lack of level headed peace maker types been the result of changing the selection process? I thought that in the past it was application forms then videos and this year it was changed to casting call type jobbies? Where only the noisiest and nakedest would stick out or is just Endemol going for the £££?

elwisty (elwisty), Saturday, 18 June 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

in a mad way, the best post-eviction interview ever.

may xposts: i thought the whole point of posh school was to give you the tools (accent, manners) to integrate into 'posh' (umid) society? i could be wrong, and maybe those are less necessary than they used to be. but whatevs, maxwell's accent is no less affected than derek's. he's put an awful lot of effort into saying "off thee 'ook" with such grating regularity.

n_RQ, Saturday, 18 June 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

There's always been noisy ones and ones willing to get naked since BB1 (though bear in mind Elizabeth got naked in her audition video and did nothing in her entire time in the house except cook - oh, and wear big woolly jumpers).

There just isn't enough of a mix, and the average age is right down this year which doesn't help. There's been at least one quiet and sensible one in the top four since the beginning, but I think I'm right in saying that they get there because they don't get nominated and when they get to the final they don't get many votes to win, therefore they are not profitable enough for Endemol.

n-RQ, posh schools are not like that at all, they are just schools that cost money to go to, the whole point being that they aren't state funded, end of story. Are you confusing them with finishing schools, where young ladies go to learn etiquette and doily-folding and what-have-you?

My new theory: Maxwell is treating this series as one long unsolicited audition to replace Shane Richie in EastEnders. Lovable Cockney geezah, innit? Bit of rough, bit of a charmer, rough diamond...

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 June 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm assuming, by the way, that "posh school" is being used to mean "public/fee-paying school" here.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 June 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

well done everyone who voted for sam: looking forward to a week of roberto/derek vs maxwell/saskia, with craig in the middle. also more from derek-science...

(i couldn't help but to think that derek's survival signals the rehabilitation of the tories grr)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 18 June 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah, posh school=private/'public'/fee-paying one (really fee-receiving) one. i went to one. i think historically there's more to them than being 'just schools that cost money to go to'. things have obviously become more fluid, classwise, since they were devised, but the original purpose was definitely the integration of new money with old. i don't think they exist just to provide slightly better teaching (which they don't always).

n_RQ, Saturday, 18 June 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

No, they don't, but they also don't exist to teach manners and elocution. Maybe some do.

I don't think the original purpose of non-state-funded schools was to integrate new money with old. They exist because they don't have to operate within the constraints afforded to state schools and can therefore offer a wider all-round education. And some people are willing to pay for that. That, as far as I can see, is it.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 June 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

i thought the whole point of posh school was to give you the tools (accent, manners) to integrate into 'posh' (umid) society?

Also, you *went* to one? And you still think this? Were you there being taught not to come across as nouveau riche, or were you a proper posh kid providing an example to the plebs of how to behave?

Isn't there a thread about this elsewhere anyway?

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 18 June 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

no, i don't mean they literally give you elocution lessons &c!!!!!! of course they don't say, 'here is how to be middle-class' or what have you. i wasn't taught how to speak in any direct way, of course. but i think it's fair to say schools do teach you how to write, how, in some respects, to interact with people (manners). it's a process of culturalisation at an important stage. anyway, do look into the history of the schools, it's interesting (sinker's 'if...' book goes into it a lot). the process is subtle, of course, but it's blinkered in the extreme to characterize the schools as simply 'providing a service'. why do you think there is such a thing as a 'public school accent' if they are simple service-providers?

n_RQ, Saturday, 18 June 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

why do you think there is such a thing as a 'public school accent' if they are simple service-providers?

Simply because the "public school accent" is associated with the upper and upper-middle classes, who tend to be the ones who can afford to send their kids there out of the desperately underfunded state system.

I was taught my manners by my parents. What neing to taught to write has to do with anything, I have no idea. I do however know that in my seven years out of state-funded education, no-one in authority ever pulled me up for having a plebian regional accent.

Can we get back to Davina's bikini now?

Max guilty of nominations discussion?

Filed: 08:13, Day 25 by Neil Wilkes

Warning: This article contains language and/or sexual references which younger readers are advised to avoid.

Max appears to be guilty of the same crime he slated Derek and Roberto for last week.

In a garden discussion with Kemal, Saskia and Max yesterday, Anthony voiced his anger at "prick" Derek, who had earlier insulted his chain.

Shaking his head, Max declared: "Fuck about, he's got to leave."

According to posters on Digital Spy's forums, the comment is just one of many similar incidents from the past week.

Last Monday Derek - along with Roberto and Craig - had their right to nominate removed following a chat in which they suggested that "silent assassin" Saskia should be put up for the chop.

Will Max face a similar fate today? Stick with DS:BB to find out...

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

haha the expression on Derek's face after Craig said the puppy thing was superb. I'm loving this new task but am HATING Vanessa for being too wimpy to do the task and then not even being humble about it afterwards. She's the most useless housemate in terms of entertainment, I hope the nominations are rigged again so that she is up for the vote.

Also annoying: when Makosi is draped over the couch like a film noir femme fatale, discussing Anthony, Vanessa constantly interrupts saying nonsense like "Yeah that's why I went off him, because he's stupid," when it's evident to all that she still has a mega crush on him but he couldn't care less about her. Also annoying ii: she doesn't so much talk as quack.

Vanessa telling Makosi that Anthony had been speaking bad about her. Did this happen? I imagine it did as I can't see Vanessa being smart enough to come up with this by herself. It still seemed a bit snide the way she did it.

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

what's the new task?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 08:55 (twenty years ago)

The unlucky housemate who picked locker number one has to go into The BB Workhouse and spend all day doing mindless chores like sorting coloured maggots into different jars, and unscrewing nuts and bolts and putting them in different jars. This person believes that all of the other housemates are doing similar work, when in fact they are partying like it's 1999. Their task is to make sure that Housemate number one (which was supposed to be Vanessa until she chickened out and Maxwell had to step in for her) believes that everyone is doing the same work.

Did anyone see BBLB yesterday? Sam actually cannot get a whole sentence out of her mouth, but I did feel sorry for her when they showed her the footage of Lesley making faces behind her back. Jesus, they are hateful, hateful people. This thread and about half an hour a week of actual footage are all I can stand.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

> spend all day

well, a couple of hours of it anyway.

i think maxwell may be on the way to sussing it out. when he asked them how many they'd done and none of them could give a sensible answer immediately and looked puzzled when quizzed about the details (plus makosi's fake vomiting) i think he was suspicious. interesting to see how they kept away from him immediately afterwards too. i think the guilt will make someone crack.

(but yes, karma payback for the grocery list fiddling)

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

I thought Max was a right arsehole for going off on Vanessa, even though Ian is right about her.

stelf)xxxxx, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Maxwell was in his best light doing the task, he looked quite chirpy whilst maggot-sorting. Vanessa was fucking pathetic, but what made it 100 times worse was when she ran out to get the goodies without showing any remorse that by rights she should've been doing the working.

Also, whatever Anthony did or didn't say, can't Makosi work out that he would obviously make light of his feelings when he was talking to Max? The IQ in that place lowers by the day. Current soft spot = Craig. Science is being a total dick with regards to cooking.

Funnily enough I was comparing Derek to Eubank last night. The point being that his "classiness" is so forced, it's a caricature of what somebody from a non-posh background thinks being posh is about. What makes this more hilarious is that none of his housemates have twigged this or seen the insecurity behind his persona. Because this is the thickest house evah.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:02 (twenty years ago)

But they don't dislike Derek because he's a Tory. I'd guess most of them are (this is one reason why I think this silly "red morons = good/blue morons = bad" is a dead meme). Maxwell doesn't strike me as a Socialist Worker.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

That scene last night where Derek bawls out Science for talking over people then goes on to talk over him for what seemed like an hour, with Science talking right back over him, leading to a white noise wall of incomprehensible babble. I've never seen anything like it on TV before, it was like watching a stag attack a thousand-year old oak tree or Batman vs Hulk.

I don't think Maxwell will twig about this task. Firstly, he's not suspicious or bright enough and secondly, he doesn't have any reason to suspect anything is amiss. Some people over at Digitalspy are adamant that he has already realised but is keeping quiet so they don't fail. This is so obviously incorrect it almost angers me.

What with the cardboard boxes and this current worker role, I'd say the tasks this year are the best yet.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

Well, what with seeing himself as "top dog", he'll only decide that he "won the task for everyone" which is what a top dog would do.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

> This is so obviously incorrect it almost angers me.

i disagree. what i said above about it (ie he could tell by the way people were answering the 'how many did you do?' questions) was echoed almost exactly by the woman on bblb yesterday. and last night's 'how come your hands are so clean?' to saskia(?) was too pointed to be a casual remark. i think he may have twigged something's going on, just not what.

i like the way bb is ramping up the pressure on the other housemates, making it increasingly difficult to hide their complicity (giving them 5 minutes to clear everything away for instance). my guess is that the guilt thumbscrews are next to be tightened.

derek vs science was odd. derek kept repeating the same thing again and again, science just went off on tangents (his donkey tangent with roberto was surreal). neither wanted to stop first.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

Anthony has found a laminate in the garden with the rules for the non-Maxwell workers on it. It'd be interesting if BB interpreted it as not being able to rule out Maxwell hadn't seen it, and therefore ruled a fail.

I was surprised last night Saskia's nominations chat was so heavily edited in the highlights show. She went into a bit of depth about why she didn't like Derek because he told her she only hung about with Maxwell/Anthony in an attempt to win them over with her womanly charms. She took this to mean Derek said that because he was sexist and hated women. Bit of a leap, I thought.

Why did Maxwell and Saskia have their dinner outside?

Apparently last night Maxwell referred to Makosi as a Boon - as in contraction of baboon.

"and last night's 'how come your hands are so clean?' to saskia(?) was too pointed to be a casual remark."

Actually yeah I forgot about that. I think you're right in that he is suspicious about something but isn't sure what, but I'll be very surprised if he does work out the whole thing. He's just too doot-de-doot-de-doo, happy jack, "I get me head dahn and get on with it" to work it out - however, if it were Kemal or Derek doing the work then it'd be a different story.

Barms and Stevem, irregular poster Stone Monkey tells me that if Batman and Superman locked horns then Batman would smear the walls with Supey within a matter of minutes. I know nothing about comic guys but I'll go with that.

I'm going off Saskia and Maxwell a bit, the smugness and self-assured comments that they'll be in the final three is grating a bit. I can't wait to see Craig's big butch PE teacher macho-man dad's reaction to Craig's coming out, BBLB need to hunt him down now!

I really like the title of this thread, though I don't really understand it.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

You have to have seen the film "scum" basically.

Anyroad, Maxwell is pleased to have "won" the task. (First one to have been won yet?)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was Scum but I had a secret hope that Maxwell had stood up and announced that, fists clenched, wielding a pool-ball-sock.

Affectian (Affectian), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

(the "Who are You Two" was his comment on Derek and Roberto getting nommed last week... I'm glad it's you two! If one of you go, "....", and then Sam went.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

buhaha "do you love Anthony?"

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Craig may have been in the closet but the door was fucking seethrough anyway.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

HAHA!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

What with the cardboard boxes and this current worker role, I'd say the tasks this year are the best yet.

It's a shame they're so wasted on this bunch. I'd have been glued to the telly last year if Michelle had been the Worker housemate and then discovered that Chicken Stu had been whooping it up without telling her.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

It's a shame they're so wasted on this bunch.

that's a good point. mind you: endemol made the choice to fill the house with halfwits, so if they're happy to waste genius-level ideas on the slack-jawed likes of maxwell, vanessa and craig then they can only blame themselves.

and, that said, the derek/roberto/anthony box-off was joyous. didn't dermot say on BBLB how the producers had only expected people to last a few hours at most?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Well, it was very similar to a "stand on this log" task on "Survivor" which lasted three days or something...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

science is unbelievable

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

they all are. they're fucking incredible.

as for derek ... i can't help noticing he's still there, despite yesterday announcing his intention to quit, and spunking on about "honesty and integrity". well: unless he's quit and nobody, not even digital spy, considers it worthy of mention.

there's something profoundly depressing about BB6. mrs fiendish has already given up watching it; the only thing that keeps me going is hoping for more ingenious tasks.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

and, er, being really sad. that too, of course.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I reckon Endemol have tipped Derek the wink that he'll be leaving Friday anyway.

BB6 is depressing. No loveable housemates at all.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Well, last time I looked the betting was evens between Derek and Roberto for this weeks eviction. That's free money (again).

I'm wondering if Roberto is a good outside bet to win? Never mind his antipathy between him and everyone else, would the female/gay block vote go his way?

I don't know why, but this makes me laugh.

I had to switch off from Sciences 'rapping' last night. Was that what it was? dreadful

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 23 June 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, last night I was almost for Science decking Maxwell over GlassofwineGate. Although "Plaque attack! Poo!" has been one of the funniest put-downs of the whole series, particularly when confirmed by Saskia despite her 'not wanting to say so'.

Also, the least convincing "snog" EVAH! Her mouth wasn't even in contact with his face, which is presumably why she had her hand up in front.

Vanessa has been punished for not being Worker #1 by not being allowed to eat any of the luxury food, and will instead receive three square meals to be eaten alone in the diary room. If she eats any food in the house she'll automatically be up for eviction next week. She and Makosi have hatched a plan, however, and are going to say she's starving herself because of Saskia's "greedy bastard" comments (shown on last night's highlights show).

I must say, the hoarding of food by individuals this year is bizarre, and apparently the first time it's ever happened on BB of any nationality.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 23 June 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

I wanted Maxwell to smack Science, but I sort of missed the wider context of the spat. To latecomers though, or me at least, it seemed as if Science was being out of order, and he really annoyed my with his attitude. Mind you I feared any act of violence from Max would've tipped Saskia over the edge and she'd have found him utterly irresistable from that point onwards, if not already.

Unpleasant weirdos the lot of 'em...

'cept Craig and Anthony in the diary room was great tho - Craig actually seemed likeable for a moment, particularly with his 'dirty bitch' comment to BB.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 23 June 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

tell me the full story of Max and Science row

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 23 June 2005 09:37 (twenty years ago)

Big Brother (UK 2005) - "They should be taken out and hung for the cold-blooded murder of the English tongue" : thread 4

(What is it with the "dirty bitch" thing? The best moment of CelebLuvIsl had Jayne and Liz doing "Dirty Dancing" with "YDB" comments inbetween)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 23 June 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

I'll answer "Science and Maxwell" on the other thread.
