Yeah, but as I mentioned on the thread, some of that blowing off steam gets quite nasty, and the other regulars can get (and have gotten) upset about what's written of them. Maybe people should blow off steam in some other place, somewhere that isn't a part of ILX.

Honestly, I hadn't even realised it was still going, in fact I tend to forget that board is even there.

But blowing off steam or not, it's certainly made me look at various people in a different light. JW is a bully, that's what he does, and I expect it. But when people who I had formerly viewed in a neutral or even positive light join in the circle jerk, it does make me feel... well, betrayed isn't the right word. Cautious.

Whatever. I've spent my day being broadsided from a different side which tends to put this kind of petty annoyance in perspective.

It's kind of funny that everything Tuomas (and others) have been saying are like the EXACT SAME thing I said on the now-much-maligned NOISE DUDE NONSENSE thread on the ModReq Board, when I was upset that people were making fun of Amateurist. Then I decided I was being a crybaby about it, so I cooled it. But I also, at that point, started reading the Noise Board more regularly, and I realized it was actually pretty funny and stuff, and so I kept posting and now I am a noise dude, too. The end.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 14:40 (nineteen years ago) link

It is "behind people's backs" in the sense that most people talked about that thread don't visit the Noise board, and most people on that thread probably know that. I dunno who it was who linked the thread here, but for many reading the stuff on it has probably come as a surprise.

If it stuck to the Noise board, that would be their business entirely. It's when the poison spreads to other boards, deliberate intrusions and provocations, revivals for no other purpose than harrassment. That isn't funny. Not to anyone except a bully.

Your right to "fucking around" or "having a good time" ends at the tip of my nose, to paraphrase.

honestly i think it's just a matter of said "bullies" fucking around and other people taking it way too seriously/personally.

This is what I have a problem with... I'd say it is bullying if you feel like you're being bullied, and some of the things the noise dudes have said and done certainly fits the bill. But instead of an apology, the noise dude reaction seems to be "JOKES!! JUST KIDDIN'!!!", and then they can do the same thing again after a couple of months. Yeah, and I know people have had pretty harsh counter-reactions to the said bullying, but since they weren't the ones who started it I tend to understand them a lot more. (There's a limit to that too, of course.)

Does being insulted, harrassed, name-called, stalked and otherwise persecuted hurt someone physically? No, you're right. It doesn't. Does it hurt someone emotionally or mentally, and otherwise just make them feel like shit? It does, actually.

If that makes me "not a good sport" or whatever to think this is just rude, cruel and spiteful, and not at all funny, then I'm not a good sport. Sorry.

And when someone continues to do it, long after the target has asked them to stop, that makes them a bully.

kate you've done as much and worse and if you're going to give voice to your narcissism all over ilx you might have to come to terms with a small corner of ilx groaning 'gee i find her narcissism a bit tiresome'. believe it or not not everyone shares your high opinion of yourself and you're going to have to figure out a way to live with this that doesn't involve you (lately)(among other things) equating it with terrorism. i reccommend this movie:

well it's certainly worth pointing out that the vast majority of the "enemies" (a term that's a treehouse red herring) have never been encountered in real life -- i.e. they are not real people but quasi-personalities that only theoretically exist and are, hence, two- or even one-dimensional. so, um, if yr really all bothered by this silliness (and i do understand how you could be bothered, especially if life sucks/this is yr safe haven, etc), just think, "they don't really KNOW me, maaaaaan."

Getting it boiled down just about as far as it can get, now. Noize = "I deserve the right to have my fun however I want." Targets = "I deserve the right not to be a target." No compromise, no common ground, YOU'RE TOO MEAN vs. YOU'RE TOO SENSITIVE.

Meanwhile it's a hundred fucking degrees outside and everybody's on a short leash. And on the internet, everybody's willing to say stuff they'd be less likely to say in person. Hooray! Mix well, bake for one hour. Makes One ILX (serves 1000).

you accusation might bear weight if you could provide an example, or, since you say it's a tendency, several examples. i can provide several examples where amateurist's dismissal of you is in no way weighted in anything wrt sex/gender and motivated more by finding intellectual posing without wanting to do any of the heavy lifting, a refusal to honestly engage with other's ideas, and a consistent thread of arrogance (cf. "in the ghetto") annoying. you react harshly to having your assumptions challenged while at the same time never bothering to really voice or explore your assumptions. among other things. it's possible he finds these tendencies tiresome. if so it's probable he's not alone.

one thing i find, well not disturbing, maybe just sad, is how some (many?) ilxors are outraged or distraught or having their minds blown at the possibility that someone somewhere out there that they've never actually met might not like them. far too many people have social or emotional investments in this board that is extremely unhealthy (there's also the board serving far too well to enable or exacerbate certain posters' mental illnesses but that topic's been beaten to death already). if posting on this board accounts for as much as even 10% of your weekly social interactions it isn't doing you any favors and you're not doing it any favors. step away from the computer (actually do it, don't start a board meant to replicate stepping away from the computer like a fucking holodeck or something), leave the house, make friends, live life, enjoy it. it will give you more interesting things to talk about on ilx.

I'll speak to this, since the few flamewars I've gotten into on ILX (you guys know who you are, love ya!) have largely been exacerbated by my bafflement about people talking shit about me. It's not emotionally damaging to me at all, but I guess I just have this conception of myself as a pretty nice, likeable guy, and so when I run into someone making bizarre, hostile accusations toward me (or whatever), I just want to figure out where it's all coming from! I think it's rather unfair for those folks who don't care that much about this board and people in it to put down those who do care. It's like some creepy kid running to you and saying, "HA HA! YOU HAVE FRIENDS! LOSER!". If this board and the people don't matter that much you, what's the point of mocking certain ILXors in the first place? What's the point of having an "enemy list" at all? What's the point of going to incredible lengths to harass someone here? I think people's right not be harassed, if they feel like being harassed, always goes before other people's rights to make fun of them. That's a basic rule of human interaction, no? Some folks tolerate these "jokes" better than others, and if they're not bothered, fine. But if a person specifically says he/she don't like those "jokes" and asks you to stop them, it should be common decency to do so.

Oh yeah, that's exactly what I was saying. I'm a bully and so is Kate. (To be fair to Kate, even if she has anger management problems she herself has admitted, I don't she her starting these attacks, she just reacts to them more viciously than others [and I'm not the one to blame her for that].) And this so called bullying is cured by bullying the bullies, as well as other people who take things "too seriously". If that's your attitude towards the people in here, I wish you'd take it elsewhere. Surely there are other boards where people aren't as serious and tight-ass as the folks here you so dislike.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Intergroup bias is the belief that one’s own group is better than all other groups. Even when categorization is arbitrary and unrelated to psychological characteristics, intergroup bias is still established. The mere categorization of people into groups can lead to increased attraction of in-group members and devaluation of out-group members. This is called the minimal group paradigm and was pioneered by Henri Taifel. In a study done by Howard and Rothbart (1980), subjects were randomly assigned to one of two different groups in which they did not know anyone. They were then presented with a mix of positive and negative information about their group, the in-group, and the other group, the out-group. Subjects had more favorable expectations about in-group members and more negative expectations about out-group members, even though they did not know the members of either group personally. This demonstrates the minimal group paradigm, which shows why something as meaningless as being a sports fan can lead to such discrimination against fans of opposing teams. In-group members tend to behave in more prosocial ways and be more cooperative toward other in-group members than to out-group members. Sports fans obviously are more prosocial and cooperative toward the in-group members then the out-group. Rarely will fights occur between two Packers fans, but it is common to see fights between Packers and Bronco fans.

Tumililingan (ex machina), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I disagree

gear (gear), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:33 (nineteen years ago) link

The out-group homogeneity effect suggests that out-group members are not only seen as being different from the in-group, but also seen as being more interchangeable with each other. They are perceived as being more similar in their characteristics, opinions, and behaviors then in-group members. Packers fans look at Broncos fans and think "they are all alike." This effect can be caused by many things. It could be because of minimal contact with out-group members or the nature of the contact with these members. When fans of the Packers and Broncos come together for the purpose of cheering their team to victory, group members are likely to display a uniform set of behaviors relevant to the specific context. If it is only that set of circumstances where the Packers fans have contact with Broncos fans, it is unlikely that much diversity of out-group members will be appreciated. Memory processes may also contribute to the out-group homogeneity effect. An in-group member can think of specific representatives from their group, but they think more abstractly of out-groups (Judd & Park, 1988). Because of a failure to retrieve specific examples of a Broncos fan, Packers fans perceive Broncos fans as being homogeneous to each other.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Recent studies have shown that even the language used to refer to in-group andden34392.jpg (5713 bytes) out-group status helps create intergroup bias. By using pronouns such as "we" or "they" and "us" and "them," in-group, out-group bias can be emphasized. Packers fans who say "We are going to win today, and they are going to loose" are viewing themselves as part of the team and demonstrating intergroup bias. The mere categorization of people into groups leads people to the processing of information about in-groups and out-groups in ways that cause intergroup differences to appear legitimate and justified (Hamilton & Trolier, 1986). A Packers fan sees all of the other members of his in-group as being similar only in positive traits. Differences between them are accentuated when they are favorable to the in-group, but are minimized if they are favorable to the out-group (Brewer & Kramer, 1985). This leads to a more positive opinion of the in-group over the out-group. Sports fans of all kinds will continue to see their in-group as being superior over the out-group, whether they know the members personally or not.

overlooked in the excellent elway performance in that game and, in fact, throughout the entire postseason, was perhaps the contribution of RB Terrell davis, a superior runner, blocker, and receiver out of the backfield.

many have argued that it wasn't davis' running ability but rather the prolific offensive attack constructed by Mike Shanahan that led to his huge numbers, an argument solidified for some by the breakout seasons by those who have emerged in his wake (Mike Anderson, Clinton Portis, and others). Portis, a young Rb whose first two seasons rank among the best first two seasons ever, suffered a decline in production in his third season in Washington.

Okay, I actually agree on that. I have nothing against the "noise dudes" in general, but I do detest and have always detested bullying and mocking people. Noise dudes in general are fun, but if/when they start the bullying, I see red. Even if you think your targets deserve the mockery (and who's to judge that), do you think it'll cure anything? Change anything? Or make things worse? (Note: I'm not saying it's just noise dudes who do this.) Remember Jon when you were under a similar attack from Amazing Randy/Jakc? I defended you then, even though a lot of the folks here said you just got what you deserved, because I don't think that sort of shit is ever acceptable.

some have even suggested that the thin air in denver contributes to a quicker exhaustion for opposing defenses not used to the environment, and therefore handling quick, bruising tailbacks and fullbacks isn't as easy, so offenses on the ground pile up bigger numbers.

Stealing through the night's uncertainties
Love is where they are

lengthy careers in football are so rare that I think extremely exceptional production over a brief period of time should definitely be considered. now baseball is another matter, hence the fact that Don Mattingly will not get into the hall despite five seasons of remarkable play.

Dominique Wilkins not being in the basketball hall is one of the stupidest oversights around. i'd also rep for adrian dantley and mark aguirre (neither of whom are in, i believe?). I think 'nique suffers for always being considered "a pretender to Jordan's throne", when if Jordan had never played the game he would quite rightly be considered the most electrifying scorer of the '80s.

I think Kate has pretty openly admitted here that she has anger management problems. And given the history between Jon and Kate I can sorta understand the reaction, even if it is extreme. Certainly it doesn't warrant for the recent bout of harassment. The thing is, Jon knows Kate hates here, but instead of leaving it to that he picks it like an old scar. The best thing to do would be if they both just ignored each other, which seems to have been the case until recently.

best thing for whom?

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:33 (nineteen years ago) link

To both of them, and to the general peace of this board.

well, i'd leave it to them if it's for their own good; but 'general peace' is not really ilx's usp, now, is it?

Jon, until the recent events I've thought you're okay, and I'm still willing to give you a second chance, because you don't seem like a rotten person all in all. But I guess you have a point, I've said all I have to say about the issue, I'll cease now.

KTHXBY, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 12:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I find it amazing people didn't think they were annoying on the internet.

Mendoza Lineman (Carey), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 13:25 (nineteen years ago) link

i think that i spend more time then i should, but ive been really sick, ive been stuck in the suburbs, and ive been writing--its an easy temptation to go to my email for a pitch, or to send an ms, or to do some research, or even to write and have it on.

im a sharer, and i am because i thot the community was civil, kind and fair. i am no longer sure that is the case, esp wrt kate--who has never been anything but kind to me, and who has been less trollish then some regulars.

i think that said, i frame the discussions as socratic, i assume that i know less then people like A, for example, and until recently i try to ask more questions then i answer--ie what do you think, discuss, etc. i think as well my recent discussions about A as a homophobe have been fairly ridcolous. (sp) I tend to be sexual(ity) obessed--and i tend to view t hings from a gender/queer lens. This is the opposite of the formal, almost cold, mostly sexless readings that A makes. I cannot assume that a refusal to talk about sexuality (in Mr and Mrs Smith, in Elephant, in The thread about the new Simpson single, in some Sirk threads, in the discussions around Minelli and Eisestein--thats 5 btw) immedaitely as a fear of a queer planet.

A has been much more dismissive, mocking, agressive and hating of me then I have of him--and he let James do the heavy lifting on this thread--and i have never interacted with James (not on purpose, of course). I woke up less upset then when i fell asleep , because i need to aware of my talents and not let people fuck with them.

and yeah, i do spend more time here then i did when i was in TO for example--but thats mostly being sick and being stuck in the suburbs. bad excuses maybe

the only sensible people here are the dudes talking about Elway and Favre.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 20:44 (nineteen years ago) link

Favre sucks. He can't even pronounce his own name.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 20:47 (nineteen years ago) link

What I always loved about John Elway was his ability under pressure. Those legendary fourth-quarter comebacks are truly the stuff of legend. However more interesting is the fact that for the first half of his career he was more of a slinger and not a great QB. Whereas someone like Peyton Manning or Brett Favre arrived and began dominating within a couple of seasons, the truly "great" seasons of Elway's career were his final six years, when his interceptions dropped considerably and his TD passes jumped up. It was at that point that the statistics and the resultant championships finally lived up to the legend. As Blount noted, Terrell Davis played a large part in this as well (finally giving Elway a RB that took the pressure off the passing game).

gear (gear), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 20:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Brett Favre, when he retires, (whenever that might be! lol!!) might be the greatest passer to ever play the game. I imagine Manning or Culpepper or McNabb or Bulger (lols! kidding on that last one!) might approach his numbers to a degree, but he's played at such a high level for such a long time, he's won three MVP awards, and at the tail end of his career he's going out not like Tom Glavine but rather like Roger Clemens. It's a testament to how much he's liked that he's possibly the most popular football player in Illinois as well as Wisconsin, despite the Chicago Bears.

also, gear had me going until the (lols! kidding on that last one!)'s from his last post.

I'm looking at the board like all friggin day and I still have like zero idea what particular heap of sand has gotten all up in ILX's collective vagina: clearly I have really bad thread-selection skills. This sucks cause this is just the kind of time where I'd like to pretend to be all sensible and evenhanded and have insightful opinions about what's wrong with everyone who's not me. Missed opportunities, man, missed opportunities.

On the plus side omg Jaymc's XXX-post is one of the better things ever in the history of ILX, even though Trayce-boobies are hopefully just NC-17 at best, and even then only if she's doing something interesting with them. Maybe if everyone posted pictures of themselves naked and playing with puppies that would restore good will across the entirety of the wh3rd.
