I think the Dragon's Lair game soundtrack was one of my primary formative musical influences.

Especially the grunting.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

I never played/even saw Space Ace, either. That was always just like a rumor.

I got my brother the DL DVD for xmas last year, and he's been making the Dirk-in-distress noise in traffic ever since.

that's a better thread title, i guess.

I decided it probably wasn't actually worth it to look at the names JESS HARVELL and COLIN FARRELL in all caps on the new answers page for however long it takes us to come up with 1000 more posts

the thing about the Colin Farrell dick picture that is what really makes it "life ruining" is the shot of him like doing that thing dudes sometimes do to try to make their thingy swirl around in a circle, like they're trying to lasso something with it, which is completely an inexplicable, horrible thing to do with someone else in the room, and there it is, Colin Farrell seemingly doing that, juxtaposed with a picture of him full on boner mode. FUCK YOU INTERNETS.

Allyzay knows where the interfacing goes. (allyzay), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

oh and q, since you asked, it's mainly the prehearing ritual of "hey there, fellow reporter - nice to see you, hahaha boy isn't it great being in the press, sure should be interesting today blah blah here's what i think is going to happen even though i have no fucking clue and am in fact totally wrong which i'd know if i'd spent more time gathering information and less time happyslapping my dick around, hey look! i think i see someone who might be vaguely important and clearly has no interest in speaking to me, so see you suckers later oh also i'm speaking in a retardedly exaggerated 'lemme tell ya how i really feel' affectation because i suck more than anyone else has ever sucked" shit that gets to me.

haha okay at this point I'm pretty sure duder just set his timer and walked off for a break while the install disk ran. little does he know it FIZZAILED like a MUG and I'm now just wandering around listening to literally every other person who comes in for service complain about their iPod battery.

Whenever I’m with him
Something inside
Starts to burning
And I’m filled with desire,
Could it be the devil in me?
Or is this the way love’s supposed to be?

(Chorus)

It’s like a heat wave
It’s burning in my heart
I can’t keep from burning
It’s tearing me apart

Whenever he calls my name
So softly and plain
Right then, right there, I feel that burning flame
Has high blood pressure got a hold on me?
Is this the way loves’ supposed to be?

(Chorus)

Sax Solo.................

Sometimes I stare in space
Tears all over my face,
I can’t explain it, don’t understand it,
I aint never felt like this before
Now this funny feeling has me amazed
Don’t know what to do, my heads in a haze,
It’s like a heat wave.

Yeah yeah
Yeah yeah
Ha ohhh yeah

Yeah yeah
Yeah yeah
ohhh yeah

I feel it, burning, right here in my heart,
Don’t you know it’s like a heat wave

Yeah yeah
Yeah yeah
ohhh

Don’t you know it’s like a heat wave?
Burning right here in my heart.

the one time I had to upgrade router firmware I fucked it up bad and was chastised for basically reading ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS but NOT THE FAQ/TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE because ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS failed to include a warning as to A THING YOU MIGHT DO THAT WILL DESTROY SOMETHING

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 15:48 (nineteen years ago)

the secret is that firmware doesn't like to be transmitted over wireless

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

That isn't true, the instructions did clearly depict a man plugging his laptop back into the router and it said that in the instructions, plug in ethernet connection. It was vague on what to do about updating but you did not read the instructions. I am actually not sure why you are claiming you DID read the instructions because you are notorious for not doing so, and admitted at the time you only grazed them!

maybe help him pick out a bro-bag instead

if I wanna imitate squirrel police there is a whole board to do that on. my line breaks serve a purpose, god dammit.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

My bag got accused of being 'worse than a girls' yesterday. How can man leave the house without: blackberry, iPod, DSLR, post picked up in the hallway and not dealt with, jelly frisbee, bits to connect iPod to any vehicle, CDs for people, old car hire receipts, sunglasses and other detritus, I don't know.

I got a Victorionox for my laptop but my daily (non-laptop) bag was a freebee a sonar festival.

I hate crumpler, timbuktu didn't fit the MacBook Pro, I couldn't find anything else in the short time I had to get a bag.

man-bags are the worst (i loathe mine), yet they're still somehow not as bad as overstuffed pockets syndrome, which A says makes people look "poochy"

got so much $ can't spend it so fast (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

oh dude i agree with a so much - plus i like bags. i like the idea that i could go ANYWHERE right now

S-L-U-G (plsmith), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

my man-bag is a laptop bag with the removable laptop cushion taken out. it's totally falling apart, though, consistent with my general 'lazy chic'. i should get, like, a briefcase.

ILXors are, if not "internet friends," then "music people"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Dudes, I'm thinking of switching from a manbag to a backpack. I just hate carrying the thing across my chest. I'm not going to be one of those douchebags on the Metro or the bus though who bumps into you with his backpack.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

it used to be like that, gabb. but since my best "music person"-friend prohibited me from talking about 60% of my favorite music, ive had to devise a new naming convention. i should call him/her my fucking dumbass friend.

Allyzay knows where the interfacing goes. (allyzay), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

maybe it's a good idea to get a backpack! I had a messenger bag for years (and before that a backpack but worn only on one shoulder) and now I think my ribs are permanently out of alignment. for real!

the secret is that firmware doesn't like to be transmitted over wireless

OK, I knew that from the d/l site instructions, so if I do it via ethernet cable it should NOT destroy something?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

I just got a tiny little black bag that's supposed to be for tourists to hide their traveler's checks in or something, but the plan is to use it as an every day & thus be forced to travel as light as possible. I am sort of depressed by seeing people on the work elevator with a briefcase, a shoulder bag, and a ROLLING SUITCASE for all the gear they carry every day. it's really out of control

but for man bag, something like this isn't bad, is it? $39. you could have it monogrammed with WTF

Post answers here, pretty please?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

I could not use Webbrain just now because I do not have the plug ins required to run it. Search engines that require plug ins or special stuff are auto-bad IMO (what if you are searching FOR the plug in! What if you are on an old computer researching new stuff!)

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, I had the opportunity to use Webbrain, but chose not to after it locked my computer for a few seconds, only reverting when I threatened it with the task manager.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, thanks for checking guys. My Windows-centric professor ordered me to test this--I couldn't even get it to open with my browser--they said they were not ready for Mac yet--but then I think I got to see it with Internet Explorer.

Also, another question is: is it a problem for you that Java needs to be installed?

When I did get some form of the World Brain to open, it returned one hit for a search of "Steven Gerrard" and that was to a Japanese fan site and then the "relational" links that it showed offered only links in Japanese characters to Japanese sites, stuff like Fifa World Cup--Japan.

I'm just not into these relational web searches in general, you know the ones where where they show you all the things are related to what you are searching for, sometimes the farther away they are the less related they are . . . ? Do any of you enjoy such type of seaches?

For example, Arlington Library has an acorn search option like this, where you can see related terms, only it's not showing up on my home computer bc I don't have the proper version of Java installed. I did try to install it but I have another version and it wouldn't let me switch them, or something.

http://www.acornweb.org/

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

Hi all. I'm back from a mtg at the Nat'l Library of da Medicine [BRIAN WE MUST DISCUSS THIS 'ARCHITECTURE' OK?] where they have a nominally interesting forensic medicine exhibit where you can watch video of autopsies and shit.

A "friend" of mine in h.s. once jumped on top of me and started punching me because I wouldn't let him borrow a Husker Du tape for a weekend. (It was Warehouse, and I knew I would never see it again and I had just gotten it. Now I hate Husker Du.)

Um, someone punched you at a Yo La Tengo show and you still like them! The band, I mean. Maybe not the guy who punched you. Who the fuck punches someone at a YO LA TENGO show, anyway?

Hi Mary! I'm glad more hanging is in your future. Hope classes are going OK. I don't really have to do Wednesday, but I will be gone week after next and so I was hoping to do Ethiopia some day next week. Any day would be fine.

But regardless I will be at a workshop at Whitman Walker from 6-8 on Wednesday, so anyone intersted in grabbing a dinner/drink around 14th and S, let me know.

quincie (quincie), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

The YLT thing was a bitchslap not a punch. I hate Husker Du for other reasons not related to the punch, which, yes, was an actual punch.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

A friend of mine got punched in the face at a Church show. She was twelve.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

There's good eatin' to be had around Whitman Walker, not including at my house. I don't think we'd pass even DC's health code.

Anyone tried the new food at Bar Pilar? Mr. Miller?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah Brian! Where have you been? Aside from scrapbooking, I mean.

quincie (quincie), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

(x-post) Q, I haven't seen the National Library of Medicination up close but it's like some weird 60's modestly budgeted Oscar Neimeyer/Frank Lloyd Wright hybrid. Very odd.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:07 (nineteen years ago)

nu-pilar = awesome. Especially the brined chicken.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

Other new awesomeness in town: just about everything at Blue Duck Tavern, the charcuterie pizza and the cocktails at Urbana, De Konick Blonde on tap at Saint-Ex and The Reef.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

Also, new wine list at Pilar has very reasonable prices, but the stemware isn't really up to par. But I guess I'd be sort of disappointed if it was.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

Brian I heard all sorts of Cold War Architecture stuff from my tour guide. The NLM is understandably very protective of their collection, and SUPPOSEDLY that awful late '60s roof was designed to collapse neatly on top of the stacks to protect them from harm in case of nuclear attack? The place is said to be just one big bomb shelter. But I'm not sure if I'm buying that--seems like an easy excuse for an ugly and only semi-functional building.

Ahahaha OK who wants to do the Mormon Temple Tour with me? I mean it--we should totally do this.

quincie (quincie), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost) haha lies! Protecting from harm in case of nuclear attack =/ building above ground. Roof collapse not a big conservation issue compared to BLAZING INFERNO.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

you can tour the temple? is it a log flume ride?

Lmaoborghini (eman), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

You can tour the non-chuchmember part of the temple. I toured the Salt Lake City temple as a young girl (who incidentally integrated her Provo, Utah, public school system as the only non-Mormon in her elementary school). I still carry scars. I need to see the DC temple, preferably while drunk.

quincie (quincie), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:30 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and Brian apparently they dug like five stories down into bedrock? Yeah, no wonder I'm not buying this. But apparently the majority of the square footage is below ground. Not that that would much impact BLAZING INFERNO.

quincie (quincie), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:33 (nineteen years ago)

I highly suggest reading "Secret Ceremonies", if you're at all interested in some of the weirder sides of Mormonism. Its a total beach read rag, but worth it for a slow afternoon.

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

i wanna go to the scientology church free movie/engram test in dupont but i can never get anyone to go with. errrbody scurrred

Lmaoborghini (eman), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

q, how can you go to fort reno tonight when you also have to play drums at the 9:30 club???

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 3 August 2006 04:25 (nineteen years ago)

*Secret Ceremonies is/was an awesome read!

*K. was kicked out of Sleater-Kinney.

*Architecture in libraries=who cares, as long as there is money to maintain the collection.

*Grave Architecture, on the other hand=very important.

FA's, got set times for tonight's brodeo?

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

they typically go:

First: 7:15 to 7:40-ish
Second: 7:55 to 8:30-ish
Third: 8:45 to 9:30

we're either first or second. it's still unclear. at this point i'd have to guess second, with GJ first.

I don't know if I'm actually up to doing this, esp in this heat, I've had a really long and busy week and I don't think I've gotten sleep. I don't get home til after 6 and it's not like Tom is going to cook up some dinner so we'd end up missing your whole set if you go on first and went, also.

of course!

moira loves scrabble, too. she used to get super-pissed at me and my friend ben, because we were into playing for points and making multiple words and knew a bunch of two-letter words (ben knows them all), instead of just enjoying the words we were playing.

S-L-U-G (plsmith), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Mark has secretly been studying the two letter words. I take more of a moira attitude except I don't get pissed because I don't have much of a competitive streak and don't really get caught up in the points thing. I do hoard 'q's, though.

quincie (quincie), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

scrabble is for indie hobos. disco fiends and techno goth homos favor more advanced modes of getting incredibly frustrated for no justifiable reason such as Mario Kart and Dragon Quest.

Besides the fact that an apparent adult penciled in "Baby Pirate" on that drawing, what about it says "pirates" to you, dude?

Allyzay knows where the interfacing goes. (allyzay), Thursday, 3 August 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

1. They have hats on.

2. "He's broken"=allusion to the fact that most pirates are broken on the inside or outside. Deformed emotionall & physically.

3. The "Bbbu" in the far right corner is a pirate gang sign.

As part of my strategic plan for today, I have a mid-afternoon conference presentation at the Hinckley Hilton, and afterwards have to take my fellow panelmembers out for drinks. They are suburban and timid, and have asked me to show them an "urban adventure".

If I take them to the Childe Harold will one of you volunteer to stop by and mug them?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 4 August 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus, Royal Palace is ideal. I probably won't be able to get them out of there.

It's a droney panel on music-related programs I've been involved in over the past couple of years. It's an archivists' conference, so I expect a lot of latch-hook rug assemblers in the audience.

So, a bit of a paradigm shift -

When a temp agency hiring person says that you're one of the most impressive people she's ever met with at the job, you feel kind of good. Still unemployed, but good.

At least there is plenty of beer in my fridge for the weekend. Awesome.

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Did you get a job?

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:36 (nineteen years ago)

Oh no, sorry. Bummer. Dude you will find a job. It just sucks looking for one. Looking for a job/looking for an apartment=sucks

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

No. It was somewhat of a mismatch - they do general temp hiring, and I've been meeting with temp agencies that hire JDs - I think there was some miscommunication on the phone when we set up the interview.

Ah well...another one this afternoon.

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 4 August 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Especially when you are not currently attached to one already when you are looking for a new one.

There may be times when we are to hung-over to go out and get food and Gatorade and we will need someone responsible to go out and get these things for us- don’t worry we have a 7-11 and McDonalds within 1/2 mile from the house. You should also always offer to pay for the first round when we go out, you want us to like you and have fun right? I know this seems to good to be true, but we are so excited to meet the right person to make our home complete.

Available September 1st.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, so question - I have another interview this afternoon. Do I go?

Pay will prolly not be as good, but it could - not likely, but could - be a better job in the long run.

The question, in essence, is Do I postpone drunkening for 3 hours?

I am leaning towards yes.

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yes I would go. It can't hurt. All it's stopping is the drunkening. PLus, think how confident you'll be in the interview! You got a job.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Friday, 4 August 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

Que, I am officially great at three things:

1) Loyalty to my friends
2) Blues guitar playing
3) Being employed

I never stay w/out a job for very long. This two month bar study period has been the longest w/out a job since my first year of law school.

X-post - TOTALLY. I will be on my A+ game. Alright. The beer bath can wait.

I can drive! I think Sunday we may have babysitting duties, so I'd vote for tomorrow. Maybe pre-lunch (before it gets to hot for our tender pale skin)? And then lunch somewhere fun?

I guess I should check the weather. But the summer thunderstorm thing usually happens later in the day.

Hey Dar1a my better half's list (#5 in particular) means I won't have car Sat.a.m., but can do public transport as necessary and looks like #8 not happening so maybe sunday?

I am really, really impressed with Brian's accomplishments thus far. It is 10:30 Fri.p.m. and I have thus far only accomplished a) booze, b) crossword, c) VogueKnitting, and d) one load of laundry. The beloved has gone to bed; I will work on e) NYer backlog before doing likewise!

3. Comfort depressed Lebanese

Mr and Mrs Q, if you need camping gear for trip to Maine we've got plenty of ridiculous items left over from Alaska, including Aqua Sox and comical mosquito-net hats. Never been worn!

Stephen X (Stephen X), Saturday, 5 August 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

I actually accomplished drunk with a vengeance.

Congrats MLS All-Stars in their 1-0 win against Chelsea. John Terry is very crushable, but otherwise the West End boys weren't really doing it for me.

quincie (quincie), Sunday, 6 August 2006 12:19 (nineteen years ago)

I only saw (well, listened to) the first 2/3, but the ESPN people wouldn't shut up about someone (Nowak?)'s new haircut. Americans and their need for personal stories. "He had it on his foot" - we can speak futbol too!

Apparently the Chelseas are just beginning to practice together, which may account for their performance. And they were playing 3 matches in 5 days, though this was the first, I think.

I liked Ferreira.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 6 August 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

Their coach, Jose Mourinho, got a new haircut. Michael Ballack is like Matt Damon on steroids. Michael Owen is a better Matt Damon, and I don't even like Matt Damon.

Ricardo Carvalho got a nice hair cut and looks pretty cute, on the Portuguese tip, Q.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 6 August 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

I already hate my own thread title folks

And today is another Plz 2 Just Bomb Us All monday, courtesy of PG County Exec Jack Johnson and Sgt. Michael Murray of the Capitol Po-Po.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 7 August 2006 10:03 (nineteen years ago)

David M. Valderrama, a former Maryland legislator and longtime friend of Johnson's, has received four contracts to advise the county on school construction and economic issues, totaling $247,666 over four years, records show.

"If you were in Jack's shoes, would you award contracts to your enemies?" asked Valderrama, who said he was instrumental in delivering Johnson the Filipino vote in the 2002 election. "Politics is politics."

Have TOMBOT explain it to you

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

Dry-humping and/or tit-fucking doesn't seem very "abstinent," yet that is what I am getting out of that hot dog.

Allyzay knows where the interfacing goes. (allyzay), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

You're not supposed to put the hot dog in the bun, what's so hard about that?

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Why is it "OK" to rub the hot dog all over the bun? If the hot dog was by itself, or next to the bun, I'd understand their point a bit better. Plus there are two buns, not one, in both photos, which leads me to believe this is some kind of threesome situation as well. Even sketchier.

Allyzay knows where the interfacing goes. (allyzay), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

You don't rub the hot dog "all over" the bun. You set the hot dog gently on top of the bun. You have to be careful when doing so, you don't want to get mustard all over the buns.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Monday, 7 August 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

OK I think I just have to spell it out for you.

Placing the "hot dog" gently on "the bun" is not abstinence except in the really fucked up way having "anal sex" is abstinence cos it's not pee-pee in the hole ie that's how Mormons and Catholics are all full up of stds and babies nowadays. Either ppl have sex or they don't, this gently resting the naked hotdog on multiple buns thing is just twisted and that website should be BURNED.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 7 August 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

S-L-U-G (plsmith), Monday, 7 August 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

Does Queen Makeda have decently sized group tables? We could also do Roha or the Dukem.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 7 August 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

What about Etete? Or that place that starts with an 'S'?

I would be so down for Makeda but I do not want to scare the girlies.

quincie (quincie), Monday, 7 August 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

I Makeda is maybe not everyone's cup of tea. It is my kinda cup, however.

S-L-U-G (plsmith), Monday, 7 August 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost) Q are you talking about Salome? I haven't heard any glowing reviews of it. We could do Etete, but Dukem & Roha are a couple blocks closer. Would be nice to scare the girlies at least a little, no?

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Dukem, then! Or Roha (I've not been but trust you on all things food, duh). I would like raw stuff with crazy good powder, pls.

Darla does 8 at either Dukem or Roha work for you?

Pete and ZR I have been know to drink past 9 on occasion:) Although I will have to be on my best behavior around the girlies because, um, to do otherwise would be UNAUTHORIZED.

quincie (quincie), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

Here's the plan:

• Roha @ 8:15
• yawn and say "my goodness it's so late let's all go home"
• girlies go home
• regroup for drinking!

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

quincie (quincie), Monday, 7 August 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and Darla I would be way down for lotusi on Sat but it would have to be before I head to 2nd Annual Cousin CrabFest in Baltimore. I think we need to be in B'more by 2. Sunday begins K&M LobsterRollFest in Maine. This would be a bad time to develop a shellfish allergy.

quincie (quincie), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

Q you still need flashlights for your lobster-hunting? Turns out we've got scads--I could bring 'em to FAInjera.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

That would be great! We have one (1) headlamp and one (1) handheld torch thingie, but could easily use a couple more light sources (Mark doesn't seem to believe me, but considering we will be in a very dark spot in a completely electricity-free cabin for a week, I maintain that more is better. The brighter the better. The cabin doesn't have a bathroom, BTW).

Do you have a camp chair by chance? I have one, but it would best for marital harmony if we don't have to fight over it.

So long as you limit the amount of alcohol you consume, a very nice meal can be had for well under $50.

This, of course, never happens with the wife and I. Ever.

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 10 August 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

I think people are perhaps referring to prix-fixe $30 restaurant week dinners (alcohol not included).

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 10 August 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, word. Just throwing in my two cents.

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 10 August 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

Guys last night Brian wouldn't stay out late with me ;_;

WHO WILL BE MY LATE NIGHT BRO?

quincie (quincie), Thursday, 10 August 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

i'm gonna be in nyc tomorrow - sunday i hope you all enjoy your weekends love zack

got so much $ can't spend it so fast (teenagequiet), Thursday, 10 August 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

Have fun zack! Come back and be my late night bro.

quincie (quincie), Thursday, 10 August 2006 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

You didn't stay and shake it to DJ night?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 10 August 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Well of course I did! Just not Brian!

quincie (quincie), Thursday, 10 August 2006 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

please to note that I left at 1am

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 10 August 2006 21:39 (nineteen years ago)

Where was the DJ night?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 10 August 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

So at least the Metro'd stopped running.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 10 August 2006 23:55 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I earned my taxi by staying out late. Actually I shared a taxi with the DJs! Also Brian you missed stripey shirt guy wagging his eyebrows in a come-hither way at either me or my fellow Kathyrn--we couldn't tell which. Then his wingman leaned over, motioned at us, and said "man, you got it!"

quincie (quincie), Friday, 11 August 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

Needless to say, he didn't.

quincie (quincie), Friday, 11 August 2006 00:43 (nineteen years ago)

The ladies, they love the brow-waggle.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 11 August 2006 01:45 (nineteen years ago)

It was one of those moments that made me kind of pity all of dude-dom.

So many dudes, so few bros.

quincie (quincie), Friday, 11 August 2006 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

I had to take a taxi from DC to Huntington station Monday night because I missed the metro.

Anyone feel like hitting up Bliss/Sorted this Sat. at the Black Cat?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 11 August 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

In 15 years one of those dudes is going to be The Last Stripey, wandering around hitting on younger chicks like Leisure Suit Dude did before him, using quaint period lines.

"Do I look like Fred Flintstone? 'Cause I can make your bed rock." "Quick, Caitlin, get a picture--I think he's from 2002."

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 11 August 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

I may swing by to check out Mousetrap/Sorted this Saturday, but will probably end up at Oh Snap! at Wonderland.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Friday, 11 August 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

What is Oh Snap like?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 11 August 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

Pete dude I could have used some stats help with some stuff I was working on today.

quincie (quincie), Friday, 11 August 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

Oh Snap is hip hop, dancehall, and other big time party music. It is always jammed and really the only party I go to without seating.

This was after AppleCare dude was trying to set me up with appointments in Washington state.

Seen yesterday evening, on Wisconsin Avenue in front of the Vespa showroom: Henry Rollins.

I've always thought of him as a scooter man.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

And welcome back, j.lu--did Andrew have to take ilx down for two days to beg you to start posting again?

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

Basically. But also spotting Mr. Rollins, and being bored into insanity at work.

Hi everyone. Daria, could I have the contact info for your fabulous French hairstylist? Also, does anyone else do flickr? I need more contacts who are not in London. And I don't count Tom & Ally--who have accounts but don't post pictures.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 18 August 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

Has it gotten that busy at work that you can't even keep the DC board up on the current threads page?

Ok - I have something to actually talk about. After having spent three years working at Metro Center, and making daily trips on foot to the White House area and Judiciary Square, and points in between, I got to be familiar with several of the downtown DC street folks - homeless, panhandlers or otherwise. Once I started school in Brookland, however, I wasn't downtown at all, and had not seen them anymore.

Now that I'm out here in LA, I am taking the Metro every day, and I get off at Pershing Square and walk about a half mile to the office. And I gotta tell you...the street folks here (of which there seem to be many) seem to be A LOT more desparate and strung out than those in DC did.

Anybody notice an increase in the number of or a decrease in the quality of life based on appearances in the DC homeless over the last few years, or is it just that LA homelessness seems to suck worse?

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Monday, 21 August 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

i might need a few more years of everyday downtown commuting to have a good enough sample size to make a fair judgment, but i havent noticed any difference at all in the past few years.

what i DO know for sure is that i was all ready to buy a good roast beef sandwich, and then i saw some BBQ pork, and went for the pork sandwich instead, and then the motherfucker was full of gristle. lame lame lame!

scissor kicks etc. only happen M,W,F to avoid arrrgh arrrgh.
you do them by laying down, face up, arms flat against you sides, then sticking your legs up (knees locked) at about 15-20 degrees. then oscillate legs out of phase with one another about 5 degrees up and down. 2 full oscillations by both legs (count to 4 in yr head for one leg up-down up-down) = 1 rep.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

You can't get more American than naked guys playing baseball. Or cherubs holding light bulbs. Or snapshots of Walt Whitman's boyfriend.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

Plus, some diabolical villain seems to have warped the Flash's tibia.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

So, I have a question...I may be coming back to DC for a long weekend sometime next month. I am feeling somewhat guilty about this - like I'm running away from getting more and more settled out here. Am I lame for feeling this way, or is this at least somewhat valid?

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

portraits of walt whitman's mansex partner are about as American as it gets, this is true

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yo dude as long as your leave your dirty laundry back in LA it's cool

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

EB, you should never feel guilty about that sort of thing. Are there external forces that are making you try to feel guilty? i.e. the wife?

Come party with WW's manhood!

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, the wife was wondering why its taken me so long to plan a trip back. I mean, I guess its just that I've had such a SHITTY summer out here that, now that I'm employed and in a pretty low stress place, I should give SoCal the chance it deserves, instead of just feeling like I'm biding my time until I get back to DC.

I don't know - this is all existential bullshit, I guess. 85%+ of my friends live in DC. Period.

Esquire, Bitch. (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Andy I recognized you!

Three of my very closest friends in the world live in the middle of the country in a small college town (so did I, for seven years) and I had a really hard time when I moved away. It sucks. The first three years after I moved, when I was living in Richmond, really really sucked. That's all I can say. I try to go back at least once a year and we all email and stuff. Nothing against DC, mind you. I'm over it now.

Okay, I'm done crying into my beer over here.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:55 (nineteen years ago)

you have beer over there?

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

Metaphoric beer. Or something.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 24 August 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

Andy, you should come visit as often as you want to--you'll have plenty of time to get to know So Cal this winter when DC's buried in ten feet of dirty slush.

Plus it takes some of the I've-abandoned-my-old-life edge off; it's more like, Hey, look, my favorite taco place is still here whenever I want to come see it.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Thursday, 24 August 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

Word. Well, if I can make it to Hunan/FAP/FAs concert, I will plan accordingly. I was contemplating coming for this weekend, but it was just going to be too much to do at this point.

The hardest thing for me was that I (and then we) had developed such a cohesive and fun group of friends and family in DC during our time there, and now I feel like I'm starting over while she's totally into her work and has her friends here. They're cool, don't get me wrong, but they aren't MY friends - like ones I developed my own relationship with prior to being pigeon-holed as "Her boyfriend/fiance/husband/crazy lawyer-wannabe". I feel like the next few years are going to have less stability than I want, but about as much as I need.

X-post, X. I feel like that's gonna be the over-all best part of it. I just hope I don't get that Sunday-afternoon-going back to college feeling when I go to the airport to return here.

Fuck, am I REALLY this much of a bitch (nongenderific)?

far from being cruel to the flies, you'll be teaching them a new and valuable thing, one that brings us to the virtue of this exercise. For we see that while flies think a lot alike, have a great deal in common, share many of the same hopes and dreams, they never act in concert, as a team, with regard for the worth of other, neighboring flies until forced to by grim circumstance - as, for example, when they are harnessed to fly and either first experience the exhilaration of high-altitude cooperation or die. Redeemed by such a critical choice, they'll soar like a glider, race like a Stealth, and, when overflying a barnyard or kennel, turn into a wicked-awesome dive bomber.

Looking at graffitied cd/lp's at my college radio station, remarks, in-jokes, drawings, etc=one of the greatest pasttimes ever.

Stephen X, will we see you tomorrow? I can return your illumination and you can collect your prize!

quincie (quincie), Friday, 25 August 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

I hope so! But it doesn't look good--I'm trying to engineer an early escape from an awful potluck, and may have to spread food poisoning or something.

No need to schlep floodlights, it's no rush getting those things back since we're out of vacation.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 25 August 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, though--I get a prize?! I hope it's a pony.

Hey everyone. Why is it that we can't bring water on the plane, but my seatmate can bring a yappy chihuaha stuffed in a gym bag?

Andy, I will switch places with you. I forgot about humidity when I was in Cali.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 August 2006 04:46 (nineteen years ago)

ARE YOU GUYS TALKING ABOUT RECORDS?

I LOVE RECORDS.

hahaha "i love records" guy was AWESOME. what was his name again? you dudes ended up talking to him for a while, right?

he was a fuckin beast at galaga, that's for sure.

got so much $ can't spend it so fast (teenagequiet), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

At no point this weekend did I use a sword on anything. It is all boomerang, all the time in my house.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Bro Pete can vouch for the boomerang's genocidal effectiveness

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Also: you guys wanna bitch about the NYT's "Things to do if you're a dickwad who doesn't want to see any minorities ever while visiting DC" article, but have any of you read the current Washingtonian? It has a "Things to do if you're horribly lame in NY" counter article.

Along with a really, really pathetic "Best Places to Shop in DC" article, which includes such hidden gems as Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, the Gap, H&M, and Forever 21.

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (allyzay), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

"The F St H&M tends to be better stocked, and has more unique items, than the Georgetown H&M..."

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (allyzay), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

I'm surprised the 36 hours article didn't suggest reading a copy of Washingtonian by moonlight.

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:53 (nineteen years ago)

"The Tyson's Corner Banana Republic is the best in the area, stocking things that you might not find not only in other Banana Republics, but on their website as well..."

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (allyzay), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

The article about hotels in NYC ("Some of them bargains, some of them high end") was a real eye-opener. I enjoyed their bargain-basement $299 per night suites, and I think next time I just might take them up on their suggestion to stay at the Mandarin Oriental, or any of the other 6 hotels profiled that EVERYONE AND THEIR BROTHER KNOWS EXISTS. The restaurant article was notable for their refusal to leave the Times Square/midtown area for more than one jaunt to the Meatpacking District!

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (allyzay), Monday, 28 August 2006 13:57 (nineteen years ago)

dudes it is new thread time.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

yeah. dc 12 should be largely stricken from the record.

got so much $ can't spend it so fast (teenagequiet), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

I move to revise and extend my remarks in the Congressional Record . Please disregard all references, jokes, pictures of babies in "funny" costumes and addenda.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

fog of war, dude.

got so much $ can't spend it so fast (teenagequiet), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno dude. I enjoy getting so many kudos for my performance on this thread. You should name the new thread GALAGA GREG.

Vanessa Williams Knows Too Much: DC13

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

something to do with "fucking beast at galaga."

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

wtf does that even mean

Allyzay is cool: with Blue n White, with Eli Manning, with NY Giants (allyzay), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry. I thought about it but "A Greg loves records! The party is stunned!" seems premature.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Monday, 28 August 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

GREG LOVES RECORDS; IS A FUCKING BEAST AT GALAGA
