Who On ILM Has The Best And Worst Music Taste 2002

Apart from yourself obviously.

Yeah we've done it before but things have changed. I said Alex in NYC back then but he likes loads of pop now. Also I've got a bit of an empty afternoon and need entertaining.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

there'll be tears before bedtime...

zebedee (Jeff W), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Apart from myself, obviously.

Er, probably Tim F. off the top of my head. One of the rockists is worst.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, obvious point - having sucky music taste (or great music taste) IN NO WAY implies that you're stupid or inarticulate or even that you can't write well about it. Well it doesn't in my book.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

honourable mentions to gareth and ronan.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Good taste: Tim H, d k, Jeff W seems pretty OTM, Jess, Mark S, Mike Daddino

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, are you trying to start FITE!s?

That said, the only person I can think of who's posted here repeatedly and exhibited abhorrent musical taste is that one guy who kept posting anti-rap stuff to the "rock vs rap" thread and also started a thread about how horrible Stevie Wonder was. I forget his alias, but it was something preposterous and stupid.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not trying to start FITEs cos I don't think having good or bad music taste is very important, especially not in discussion or writing. One regular contributor to FT would be maybe the 3rd last person on here I'd ask for a recommendation but that doesn't mean I dislike their writing or them.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I might be trying to start a FITE about whether taste is important though...

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

er, thanks Tom

howevah, "I've got a bit of an empty afternoon" = send snotty e-mails to 102 pt.2 defaulters, surely?

Jeff W (Jeff W), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Alas Jeff W as I said on ILE there's a fuck-up with the home email. It tempts me with news of 475 new messages (all porn no doubt) but crashes if I send or receive.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Finney, Kellman, Harvell, Ewing, Hopkins.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

But what if your writing is mediocre and underdeveloped and your exquisite super-hep taste is ALL YOU'VE GOT OH GOD I'M LIVING A LIE *sob*

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

the best taste = the closest to mine(?): Jess H,
but also waiting for recommendations from Tim Finney and Tom E, sometimes looking for tips of Marcello, Andy Kellmann and Bob Zemko.

luke (luke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I would say best taste: Siegbran! (except the trance ; )

But also Gareth, Omar, Michael W and Michael B.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Taste is important - but I think the best writers are aware of their own taste and how it guides them, and don't treat it as a sacrosanct truth (unless they do this for effect, christigau-style).

Maybe taste is like the wind & tide, and the listener is like a castaway clutching to a bit of flotsam - sometimes it'll wash you up on the beach of a gaugin island full of exotic fruits and babes, sometimes it will dash you on the rocks, sometimes it just takes you home, sometimes it takes you further and further out to sea.

it's kind of an external force shaped by random experience and neurological quirks - so if a writer tells me a little bit about why something hits them hard as a person it means more than outlining a series of logical rules about why something must be good. Or if they can at least acknowledge that their logical system is their own, not something immutable.

is this a bunch of hippy crap?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

It should be painfully obvious that the ILMite with the best taste in music is yourself. :D

Actually, in my short time here, I've found that Nate Patrin has rather "good" (as in "similar-to-mine") taste in music...maybe I've still got that TS: Jimi Hendrix/Eddie Hazel thread stuck in my mind though. :D

Of coruse, it should be noted I've been here a rather short amount of time.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know who to say for worst, I think I have no real comprehension of Tom's tastes but that doesn't make them the worst really cos there is some common ground. I don't know, I could say Graham but I do like SEB, so you know it's not all bad!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

would it be facile to say that it's not what you like as much as how you like it?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Not at all. I like all sorts of shmutz, but I realize that the reason I do for the most part is merely that "it sounds good" or "I like the lyrics" and not, say, "I am king of all irony; tremble in the presence of my insincere love for cheesy bullshit" or "this is REAL music and not CRAP BY MACHINES". It's not a crime to like the Beastie Boys, but to like them because "they have nifty merch and I buy into their boho Free Tibet lifestyle" is pretty lame.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Poor Reading Comprehension! I mistook 'facile' for a synonym for 'trivial'. D'oh! It's before 9 AM, forgive me.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't apply the categories best and worst for musical taste. Instead I can list the people who have the closest musical taste to mine. But this often seems to depend on the genre:

In general I often agree with Mark@Pitchfork and David Raposa.
I also like a lot of stuff Josh likes though there is a lot I don't (The Plan e.g.) and a lot I don't know. A lot of the indie Kate is/was into, I am into as well. Especially the droney stuff. Concerning Americana I rather trust bnw. Dan's comments on New Order and The Cure (with exceptions, eg The Top) are often OTM. For the postpunk/new wave years 1977-83 Dr.C is my guide though in general our tastes are rather diametric. And I occasionally agree with you, Tom concerning some UK indie, eg Wedding Present and Jesus and Mary Chain.

Others but I am not 100% sure: Sean Carruthers, Nitsuh, Sundar, Jody Beth.

And I still don't know what Mark S likes except MMM (or is that irony?).

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I said Alex in NYC back then but he likes loads of pop now.

Oooh... okay, I'll take the bait.

Why does liking pop/r'n'b/hip-hop imply having "good taste", and why does liking rock/indie imply "bad taste"?

The person with the best taste is the person who's taste most corresponds to mine - I like virtually all the records in Ronan's singles list and only a few of the records in Tim Finney's list. Does that mean Tim has worse taste? Probably not.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember a friend's brother saying once that he'd heard I had "great musical taste". I think all this meant was that I had loads of records. I don't really think the concept of good or bad musical taste has any validity. All you really mean when you say that someone has bad musical taste is that they like different music than you. And in attempting to imply that something subjective can be turned into something objective you are guilty of rockism.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

All you really mean when you say that someone has bad musical taste is that they like different music than you.
I'd say that they like music I hate or despise. Someone liking music I don't know or don't know enough about doesn't necessarily have a bad taste. But taste discussions are a waste of time anyway...

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Best taste: dleone, mark s, Douglas Wolk, hstencil

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Why does liking pop/r'n'b/hip-hop imply having "good taste", and why does liking rock/indie imply "bad taste"?

The person with the best taste is the person who's taste most corresponds to mine

Your second sentence answers your first Matt! ;) I don't think I've ever tried to claim taste is anything other than subjective.

Also back then I singled out Alex in NYC because even within the areas he did like I thought he liked some awful bands. Anyway it's not quite along those lines. Alex in NYC has (crudely) moved from saying "all pop is awful" to "nearly all pop is awful but I appreciate a good pop record when I hear it dammit", which is a shift in taste no matter what the dismissed genre was. All the people I mentioned as having particularly good taste like some indie (except maybe d k) and rock (except Tim).

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

its me! I'm a tweeist.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

(i actually do like MMM alex, i just don't know where my copy has gone to, and i don't want to get it on CD as i think it will be wrecked by the digitalisation)

in the sense of sensible filters, i have terrible taste: i like almost everything, and i like liking things => apart from a tiny number of more or less "token" dislikes (=U2 haha), even ppl I am really quite critical of (=the Clash/the Jam/Van Morrison) have made records I very much like. There are records I am a bit baffled by other's love for — Perfect Teeth and Imperial ffrr — and projects who get what seems to me free-pass approval from weak reasons (Fishbone? but really I only know a couple of their LPs and they seem also to be ones disliked by Fishbone aficionados).

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry that reads like it needs a big but: thus, BUT mainly I get bored when people announce tastes pro and con for reasons that seem to me worn out by overuse

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

''(i actually do like MMM alex, i just don't know where my copy has gone to, and i don't want to get it on CD as i think it will be wrecked by the digitalisation)''

I can confirm this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of the people on my 'good taste' list are there because of the records they do like not because of those they don't. Mark S is the exception.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Just out of curiosity, can you expand on what you consider to be good taste, Tom? Is there a criteria independent of your own taste?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a combination of 'liking the same stuff I like', 'not disliking other stuff i like' and 'sharing the same outlook on music' - both entirely self-centred. I distrust ideas of 'taste' which try to operate using independent criteria.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, that makes sense

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Admittedly, overlap with my own taste is a criterion of whether I consider someone else's taste to be good, but there's more to it than that. If someone has good taste, then when I hear them describe something they like, it makes me want to like it too. Sometimes, it doesn't click for me, but I usually at least get a sense that there is something of value in it that I could appreciate. The people who seem to me to have the best taste are not the ones who simply like what I like. Rather, they are the people who like some of what I like, plus many other things that I'm not familiar with but which they make me curious about.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

best: dave q, s trife, siegbran, and the koritfw!! guy
worst: me

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I vote for Matos cos he's always mentioning things I've never heard of, plus old pop which is always an education.

Worst taste is predictable taste so genre-huggers of all descriptions can go in that bucket...

Jacob, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

But O.Nate isn't that a function of articulacy not taste? Or does taste = articulacy.

I like people with predictable taste. I think the Pinefox has good taste within the area of music he's chosen to listen to, for instance.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone on this board does my sensibilities aesthetic violence.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Others but I am not 100% sure: Sean Carruthers...
99% thanks there, alex. I'm generally not 100% sure of my own tastes either, so that's fair enough.

I haven't really thought about this too much since the last one, and I think most of the people who contribute regularly are great to read, whether I agree or not. In a pinch I'd probably say Andy K and Dan P and def arthur (returning the favour from last go around). Probably markp too. I'd say Ned, because he seems to be most like me from a likes/dislikes perspective, but his stubborn refusal to admit that some of my favourite bands aren't trash sort of scratches that. ;)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom could you explain "outlook on music", it just strikes me that "what's your/other ilxers outlook on music" could be quite interesting. I've no real idea what mine is, nor could I begin to talk about others. Doesn't it just mean tastes aswell?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess my definition of taste is kind of logocentric in that it privileges those who have an ability to articulate their likes and dislikes. I guess for me these two things are kind of bound up together. Perhaps part of having good taste is having the self-awareness to discern what it is in the things one likes that makes one like them. Would it be possible for someone to have good taste without being able to articulate it? In theory, I guess it would, although it might not be possible for anyone else to recognize that they had good taste.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't think of anyone on ilm who has what I'd consider bad taste in musical terms, simply because when it comes to talking about something they like or dislike they usually display evidence of having a discerning, informed palate QED: they have 'good' taste. When it comes to wondering who has closest likes and dislikes to mine own, well, everybody seems so fucking disparate and broad in their musical (de)(a)ppreciation that I can't help but admire. I bet everybody on these boards could get right into it with everybody else here, on some level of common musical ground.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Well O I guess they could articulate it if they were making you a mixtape or DJing. I mean I have no idea how articulate Trevor Jackson is but his Party-Mix CD is a pretty textbook example of "good taste" within the remit he's set himself.

Ronan - "outlook on music" boils down to "what you want from music" I guess. I look for sonic surprise, good times, immediate impact, wit and novelty. I used to look for emotional impact much more than I do now. I've never looked for technical complexity and somebody who did would probably think I had pretty rotten taste. etc etc

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, that's true, a mixtape could be a way of articulating taste. As could starting a band.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i've just skimmed through the best singles of 2002 list and would like to add jess to my previous nominees.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I find that weird, I know it stinks of posturing to say I don't really know what I look for. But I don't.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I can confirm this.
What can you confirm, Julio? That Mark S likes MMM or that the digitalisation didn't do any good to MMM? Is digitalised guitar feedback really discernible from analog guitar feedback? I somehow doubt it. As digitalisation cuts the music into bits I could imagine (in theory only) that the CD version is even better as it should be even more fucked up. You must know that MMM is on my wishlist.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"I said Alex in NYC back then but he likes loads of pop now."

It's not that I *SUDDENLY* developed a liking for pop, it's that you all immediately assumed that I *ONLY* liked certain things and didn't credit me with having broader tastes.....you thankless pop fascists!

Beyond that, "taste" is all relative. I might think Julio has indefensibly abysmal tastes, but that's only based on patently ridiculous statements he's made in the past ("I don't care either way because the ramones were shit.") But, ultimately, what's treasure to one person might be sewage to someone else. All's fair (although saying the Ramones are shit immediately robs one of any/all credibility.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say Ned, because he seems to be most like me from a likes/dislikes perspective, but his stubborn refusal to admit that some of my favourite bands aren't trash sort of scratches that. ;)

But they LIKE to live in my dustbin! So clearly they are trash. ;-)

I have no answer to the above question in that just about everybody likes something I like or has mentioned someone I've found of worth. Rah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i like alex because he comes THIS close to subjectivity and then lets his passions blow it all away in the last sentence usually.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

and then wipes the beer from his keyboard;)

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

It's only 11:30 am here, Gareth. I don't need beer to fuel my vitriol this early in the morning.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

But they LIKE to live in my dustbin! So clearly they are trash. ;-)
See, this is why you're not on my Christmas card list, Ned.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

''I might think Julio has indefensibly abysmal tastes, but that's only based on patently ridiculous statements he's made in the past ("I don't care either way because the ramones were shit.") But, ultimately, what's treasure to one person might be sewage to someone else. All's fair (although saying the Ramones are shit immediately robs one of any/all credibility.)''

alex please mend yer killing joke ways.

The ramones were really awful.

''What can you confirm, Julio? That Mark S likes MMM or that the digitalisation didn't do any good to MMM?''

abt digitisation.

''Is digitalised guitar feedback really discernible from analog guitar feedback? I somehow doubt it. As digitalisation cuts the music into bits I could imagine (in theory only) that the CD version is even better as it should be even more fucked up. You must know that MMM is on my wishlist.''

The one thing i'm sure abt is that MMM is a very dense rec. I'm not sure its all feedback tho'. Or just tapes of drones that he sppeds up/slows down: i think there's more to it than just feedback.

Thing is I'd like to get it on vinyl just to see whether I can listen to it more. I've only listened to it three or four times but this is the sort of thing I'd like to listen to a couple of times a week but i think the CD takes something away. its just a hunch in the end.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to retract the faint undercurrent of reason and fairness that ran though my initial post here in terms of Julio's taste. While I originally stated that taste is all relative and to each their own and all that, I'd like to now officially state that while he might indeed be a nice guy, Julio has the worst taste not just on ILM, but in the world.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

not worse than me, surely?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

**For the postpunk/new wave years 1977-83 Dr.C is my guide though in general our tastes are rather diametric**

and if I ever get into Americana, alex, you will be my GURU ;) But don't worry it's not likely to happen, several people are under orders to shoot me first!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:30 (twenty-three years ago)

and best taste (meaning most fun approach o music and unerring bullshit detector) = Norm Phay. If only for his adoration of Altered Images.

The runner up is Mr. Hopkins for his Reggae gurumanship and love of the Stockholm Monstahs!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I seem to often agree with Dan, Sean C, and Ned (though I still can't figure out MBV!) about likes and dislikes, so I suppose they have the best taste. Tom expresses love for a few specific pop bands I also really love (PSB, Madness, Steely Dan).

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

You only have horrid music taste if you have no valid reasons for liking the music you do.

David Allen, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

define: "valid."

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

''Julio has the worst taste not just on ILM, but in the world.''

its OK alex. personally i refuse to ans this question since it comes off as one of tom's 'I'm bored at work' type questions.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

but surely the most valid reason is liking it?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

3 : appropriate to the end in view : EFFECTIVE (every craft has its own valid methods)
4 of a taxon : conforming to accepted principles of sound biological classification

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

well, here's invalid reasons for liking something: bold, new, revolutionary, the FIRST to do it, its authentic, it isn't (group x). Valid reasons: The way she sings gives me shivers, the lyrics are evocative of emotions I understand, it's funny, I like their haircuts.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, that's true, a mixtape could be a way of articulating taste.

Rilly now? (and there isn't even a Beck song on it!)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, despite our differences, Julio's posts aare never boring, and for that, I tip my bloody-tusk-adorned helmet to him.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, that's true, a mixtape could be a way of articulating taste

or the "your own fucking ten" thread

Jeff W (Jeff W), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway, I think I have the most un-ilm taste in music, and I'm in a terrible mood.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

the only way we can settle this is if people post lists of all the music they have. Seriously, don't do it.

g (graysonlane), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway, i have the best taste.

g (graysonlane), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't understand Tom's taste either, really. No offense: I just mean I can't really see a connecting thread in a lot of the things he likes.

I probably feel my taste is closest to Martin Skidmore's, Jess's, and Mark @ Pitchfork, but no one is all that close. I probably don't like a good portion of what they listen to.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah that wasn't half as funny as my definition of "race" on ILE.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably Tracer Hand too. (Did he change his name or something? Haven't seen much activity from.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the worst taste, obv.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

the only way we can settle this is if people post lists of all the music they have. Seriously, don't do it.

DJ Martian to thread!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

That wouldn't be fair anyway since I like so much music I don't have, and expect to like even more of it.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Dammit Jody, I was gonna say ours were the most similar and now I'll look like a schmuck! Now I'll have to pick Matos.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess ours are fairly similar -- I'm remembering that 1980 thing where you picked X, James Brown, Motorhead, and Visage. That sounds like me.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, and in Matos' case he usually mentions things that I haven't heard before but sound cool and then I hear them and they instantly become new favorites. There should be some sort of weird NYC/Twin Cities triumvirative thing going on here.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i like awesomapower, john darnelle, doorag and dave q. jess is closed minded and twee most of the time.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

on point: dleone, siegbran, mark pitchfork, john danielle

worst taste: the guy who hates girls (with guitars)

original bgm, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course, considering I've been here all of a day or so...

original bgm, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

No one has mentioned me because I don't really think I give a good view of the music I like on ILM. I'm a bit of a non-presence here, I suppose. I just don't post enough for people to have much of an idea of what I like.

But to the people who think so, no, Radiohead is not the only band I like, and nor do I really like any of the bands commonly associated with a love of Radiohead.

But I can't really think of anyone here that I ever though, "Wow, s/he has great taste..." about. But there tend to be certain people's opinions that I value. What Tom E, Tim Finney, mark s, Jess, Marcello, John Darnielle, dleone, Julio, Nitsuh/nabisco, Ned Raggett, and Nathalie think tend to matter to me. It rather wounds me when they hate something that I adore.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 14 November 2002 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

*insert comment about me and my 'love' of Jeff Buckley, but I will be kind* In any event, thanks for the compliment! And those other folks who have mentioned me too. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 November 2002 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

g and keithykeith have the best taste

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 November 2002 00:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, forgot Lady Kate St. Claire.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 14 November 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

You're one of my favorites, Melissa -- I just wish you would post more often!

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 14 November 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

When it comes to the attractive qualities of a person, the ability to say interesting things about music trumps music-taste every time. I don't think I've ever read someone's post on ILM and thought how could they possibly say they like THAT?, yet I'm constantly bewildered by my own tastes. I think this means that I must sincerely (and non-self-loathingly) believe I have the worst taste on ILx.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 14 November 2002 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Melissa, considering some of the stuff I saw mentioned on your web-site, I would be interested in seeing you post more often as well.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 14 November 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i feel like the bastard offspring of a hydraheaded finney/ewing/daddino/trife/matos/clover/sinker baby.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 November 2002 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

actually to be honest I wouldn't let any of you anywhere near the stereo at my house

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 November 2002 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I relate to Jess's comments - one of the funny things about relating to so many different aspects of different ILM contributors is that it becomes hard to have an idea of the way your tastes relate to others that isn't a circular definition. That particular hydrahead determines a lot of my taste though, with added shout-outs to Andy Kellman and Marcello, who have inspired a lot of my tastes this year.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 14 November 2002 01:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I own this thread, on account of my comprehensive Chris de Burgh album collection and heat-sensitive Massive Attack singles box set.

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 14 November 2002 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

duane and minna

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 14 November 2002 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, Gareth, Tim F, Andy K and Rebecca have easily the best taste on ILx. Tom, Mike D, Dr C, Mark S and Josh haven't, but I still care a lot about what they say about stuff. Tim H has theoretically got fantastic taste in music, but he doesn't like rock at all and is therefore ruled out on a technicality. As for the worst, I am forced to say Tadeusz, because a Zappa obsession of that size is surely a sign of something very grim indeed lurking in the taste department.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 14 November 2002 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

minna wins cos she's cute

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 14 November 2002 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

oh god how disgusting of me. this must be what graham feels like

bob zemko (bob), Thursday, 14 November 2002 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim Finney's taste is scarily close to mine at times so to me that means he has fantastic taste. As I mentioned before I like Melissa's taste a lot because she's made me look into a couple of things I wouldn't have bothered checking out otherwise. I can say this about a lot of people here, I'm afraid I will be here all day like a weeping actress at an awards ceremony if I name everyone!

Tom Ewing easily wins the award for worst taste in music by a country mile because of his unspeakable passion for Carter USM. But since he is a good writer he is forgiven...

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 14 November 2002 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

As I mentioned before I like Melissa's taste a lot because she's made me look into a couple of things I wouldn't have bothered checking out otherwise.
!! :)
Such as?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 14 November 2002 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Mel, offhand I can think of Lali Puna...I know there was another one though.

Also you have made me re-think Radiohead a bit. I think a lot of my reaction to them has been based on the critical fawning in the wake of OK Computer, and I had been more dismissive of them I probably should have been. But I enjoyed a lot of Amnesiac, which I probably wouldn't have bothered listening to if not for folks like you and Josh hadn't been discussing it. However Thom still annoys me...

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 14 November 2002 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I am somewhat staggered that people would mention me as someone with good taste (particularly since 95% of my posts are juvenile UPA-lite). Aw.

There was a reason why the "Dan and Ned are cosmic twins" jokes started.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 November 2002 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah me and Duane have the same aka good taste. Don't you SEE that yet? I like Ronan too because he has singular obsessions in different genres.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 November 2002 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I've found some common cause w/ Mary's tastes, and I enjoy the way she expresses herself here and on ILE. I also have 'likes' in common w/ Martin Skidmore, Tom E, Mark S, Duane, Marcello, Jody B Rosen, Josh, and the whole avant/free gang - o. nate, stencil, dear old Julio.

I find I have much less sympathy for the 'tough-talking' rock/rap boys and girls, the ppl who only like one kind of thing, and the whole "that's soooo 1992" brigade...

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 14 November 2002 09:08 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a reason why the "Dan and Ned are cosmic twins" jokes started.

Yes, quite right. Together we will defend much to the death and celebrate that which is yet unspeakable. But you'll all be crawling on your knees in obesiance to us when the inevitable Front 242/Skinny Puppy revival happens!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 November 2002 09:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i am amazed that i exist outside my own mind let alone have good taste! i feel like a fraud cos i really stole my taste from you, just stood in the background and said "yeah, that so true" a few times really - so i must return the compliment: honda and boxcubed do have great taste and so do tim f, jess, ethan, matos, gareth, tom more often than not, and lots more who i can't remember right this second.
bob zemko... you smell nice.

minna (minna), Thursday, 14 November 2002 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's ridiculous because one is obv going to pick those that have taste which resembles yours (and vice versa re crap taste). Me? Oh well, I could care less what someone likes (or doesn't like). Writing style/depth and approach matter to me. So I would read an article written by Jess/Ethan/Josh/Marcello/Simon Reynolds and Simon Frith even if it was about Radiohead. (That one's for Mel: My Radiohead hatred is grounded in my failure to get an academic degree. heh!)

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 14 November 2002 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

the notion that x has good taste and y has crap taste is a flawed one.

I like ppl who are open minded, who like more than one specific thing, like dear old andrew L sez.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 14 November 2002 10:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm surprised people are namechecking me. I don't think I have a definable taste in music; I'm more of a dilettante who likes a bit of everything across the board. Part Ewing, part Patrin/Matos, part Sinker, part Dave Q, part Alex in NYC.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 14 November 2002 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I nominate Saul Williams.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I believe I did say "that's sooo 1992" but it was to a troll who was being annoying, it was mostly in jest. Oh well.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I like people who don't have an unidentifiable taste, Jody Beth. Because I think I haven't one neither. Mine is rather eclectic. My attitude towards a record like Sea Change changes daily. Good taste should be unpredictable to a certain degree I feel. If you are a critic and your taste is predictable you could & should be replaced by a computer program I think.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry got it wrong again, I wanted to write "I like people who don't have an identifiable taste..."

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I find this unanswerable, because obviously good taste is defined as what I like. I do know one person who has said that I am the only person he knows with better taste in music than him, which to me is an incomprehensible, impossible statement.

I listen to different people here with interest in different areas - so Andrew on jazz, Tim H on reggae and soul, Dr C on old punk, Tom and Graham on pop, Ronan on dance, and so on. Julio and I hardly agree on anything musically, I have the highest possible opinion of Mark S's intellect, but he likes Level 42 better than the Clash or Coltrane, Jel is all too keen on rubbish rock, etc.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Jel has the most likeable taste of anyone here. If you summarized everyone's taste, laid the summaries out in front of me, and told me I had to pick one of the taste-summaries' owners to spend the rest of my life on a desert island with, and I couldn't work out which ones were likely to be female, then I'd probably wind up chosing Jel's, on the assumption that he'd have to be a fun, friendly guy.

Fights I can win:

"Tom Verlaine is a decent guitarist"
"I'm not a big fan of the Fall but I am willing to learn"
"Daft Punk is great, though I suppose it depends on whether you like house, and even if you do and still don't think they're great, I can merely disagree and not make any assumptions about your sanity"

The Clash are great. The first album at the very least. Who's rippin' into them? They aren't the gods some people imply, but really, I thought this board was called "I Love Music." Who could leave the Clash out? Somebody link some anti-Clash thread and name names.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 23 November 2002 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

use the search. the clash were fucking nonsense.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 23 November 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

y-yeah, well...derek bailey is fucking nonsense! it doesn't even sound like proper music! my kid sister could do it! he's just fucking about!! etc etc...

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 23 November 2002 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

used the search and wait a sec, Julio. The Clash are "fucking nonsense" (now there an unsubstantiated statement), but the MINUTEMEN aren't? So yer problem with the Clash is their songs were thematically consistent and they didn't add enough piddle-jazz for ya?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 23 November 2002 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Well wait wait a second - you ever hear the Minutemen's cover of "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love"? That alone redeems them.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 23 November 2002 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

at least you admit the Minutemen need redemption. In fits and spurts I can tolerate some of the Minutemen I've heard ("This Ain't No Picnic," "Political Michael Jackson Long Name Folderol Whatnot"), but overall it feels like a colossal joke. It'd be facetious for me to say I don't understand the praise; I currently assume it has to do with peoples' obsession with leftist politics and true musical eclecticism. They seem like really nice guys and all, but I really have a hard time listening to any album all the way through. I'd take Watt's "Piss Bottle Man" over all of the Minutemen's shit.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 23 November 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

''y-yeah, well...derek bailey is fucking nonsense! it doesn't even sound like proper music! my kid sister could do it! he's just fucking about!! etc etc...''

the diff between what I said and the above is that I actually believe it and you don't.

anthony- i borrowed 'london calling' off the record library (so i don't have any of their recs with me). at the time I hadn't heard any minutemen either and it was just their sound was just...much ado abt nothing really. I don't care whether they 'meant' anything and whether anyone comes in here saying: 'oh I saw 'em in '78 etc etc. Its kind of like the ramones in that their sound or whatever is not captured on record.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 23 November 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

one note from the minuteman shits all over the fucking clash maaan!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 23 November 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know if they meant anything (and London Calling doesn't sound nearly as gripping as the first album last time I checked) and I sure as fuck don't care if they meant anything (see my posts about Cobain-Stipe-Malkmus as proof), but the first album is a giddy punk masterpiece with strong instrumentation, real personality and great hooks. Minutemen is spazzy wank-off people claim to enjoy because the band were full of blue-collar wanna-be revolutionaries who hung out with Black Flag.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 23 November 2002 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

one note from this band made of ''blue-collar wanna-be revolutionaries who hung out with Black Flag'' still shat on the clash's london calling.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 23 November 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, I do Jess. Note I didn't acclaim them for their diversity or politics.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 23 November 2002 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

though I'll say I think their diversity tends to be more listenable and their political stance on song make a lot more sense than the Minutemen's.

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 23 November 2002 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

as a part-time poster on this board I probably don't have the same insight into people's likes and dislikes as the full-time group. I measure taste in a self-centered manner, if people like bands I do I think they have good taste. The problem with this analysis is that I don't think my taste is really the best, but it's all I've got.

with that in mind I'd vote for Ally due to the songs posted on various lists, ned for his philosophizing, momus for pointing me towards this site, and helltime because he likes king diamond.

for worst taste, I would have to second the guy who thinks girls shouldn't play guitars, that was just too foolish.

Really, though, I appreciate most people's taste on this board, especially those full-time ILMers who constantly post about bands I am unfamiliar with. Sometimes I run two browsers just so I can jump between ILM and winmx at will, harvesting mp3s from groups that sound interesting.

well simon you like ONLY hip hop it seems. just one thing so yes you can be on my worst list but since you are 'funny' abt it I can't really.

anthony and ned on the other hand...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 24 November 2002 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont like only rap!! >: (

s trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth you used to like me, have i gone bad? was it that whole 'fascist' thing?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha! this is what happens when you list people you see! mitch is on the list too. no one else though ok?

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

simon- sorry. I only seem to see you on hip hop threads but there are so many really.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

but i started a cledus t judd thread

s trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 24 November 2002 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Good taste is the enemy of the revolution. Man.

Callum (Callum), Sunday, 24 November 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes but I only look at new ans page so I didn't see yr name. anyway, I recall seeing it (though yr name didn't register) but I must have been speed reading.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 24 November 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i always think gareth's tastes are probably closest to my own. also jess + tim f, obviously. everything that dr c has ever raved about and i've subsequently bought has been fantastic, so him too. probably a load more people too.

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 24 November 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been trying to think about whose tastes are most similar to mine, I guess Ned is closest just coz he buys alot, Sundar has good taste in rock, and Siegbran has good taste in metal, Keith has good taste in twee.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 24 November 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

me jel what about me

s trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 24 November 2002 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

do you like nappy roots simon? if you do then you can have best taste in hip hop.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 24 November 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

TRIFE 4 LIFE NO DOUBT BABY PA!

can i get a napkin with that cookie ta thanks (bob), Sunday, 24 November 2002 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

man what is it with rock people and nappy roots!! theyre ok

s trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 24 November 2002 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Feeling's mutual, Julio. Actually, I don't know about your taste per se. I just know you have the most baffling way of presenting it. I'm waiting for you tell me the problem with gravity is that things keep falling up.

unless you meant that pop-country Anthony guy running around...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 25 November 2002 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

"that pop-country anthony guy"..my god no one knows anyone around here anymore!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 25 November 2002 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I think some of ILM's best writer's have the worst taste. Inevitably I will be convinced by some bastard's blog to download some fucking dance remix which I have no need of whatsoever.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:17 (twenty-three years ago)

er...''pop-country Anthony guy running around...''. Come on man. From the one track I heard in the focus group he's not into Shania twain (he might be, the point is he would prob have his reasons). anyway...no I meant you.

actually I don't know much abt you either, I'm just kidding around (as usual).

''I just know you have the most baffling way of presenting it''

That could apply to yr reasoning for liking the clash actually.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you jel.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Ramosi and Helltime have the greatest taste, also Alex in NYC if just for his dogged insistance on posting pictures of the Misfits and Killing Joke all over the place. Also Otis because I can convince him to listen to everything I listen to but alas he is no longer with us amongst the internet elite. I give props to bnw for doggedly giving props to Bright Eyes despite all opposition.

I feel sacreligious saying it of course but I single out Tom for taste that annoys me most cos it's just never the same, one day he hates this one thing with a passion then next day he likes it, I can't figure out what he's into half the time besides Britney Spears and I'm not even that sure he's into her either, so for lack of long term conviction it is he.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, also Tracer Hand is my best taste list cos he actually likes the Georgia Sattelites, I mean who the fuck likes the Georgia Sattelites? For that, he is a god. Also for the Frenchbloke tracks he gave me, and for dancing to Mambo #5 with me.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

It'd help if I could spell "Satellites"

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

''I can't figure out what he's into half the time besides Britney Spears and I'm not even that sure he's into her either''

jeez I read that all wrong.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Did the Georgia Satellites do "Hippy Hippy Shake"?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.suburbias.com/punk/misfits/images/misfits_mom.jpg

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The best taste is the one nobody else endorses. Only liking Michael Jackson can't be the best taste like only liking the Dead C or MMM. It's the mixture that does it all.

By the way that was bad taste in the classical sense, Alex in YNC.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Did the Georgia Satellites do "Hippy Hippy Shake"?

I don't know! That's my point! No one knows! Who does know? Tracer Hand. He's a great man. Also he knows the version of I Got Erection where they yell about stupid new wave girls who go out with punk rock boys. I only saw that on the Turbonegro video collection!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The Georgia Satellites did "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" (as in "Don't tell me no lies, and..."). I hereby expect to be at least named co-Great Man by Ally.

Matt C., Monday, 25 November 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Y'know, I've been meaning to ask this for some time now....and pardon my ignorance, but who/what is MMM?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

MMM= metal machine music.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt C. lords over this thread with his godlike knowledge. That's a fantastic video, that song. They look like my dad's family.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I never thought I'd actually type the phrase I'm about to type. Take note....this is historic:

Thanks, Julio.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Pshaw. EVERYBODY knows that Georgia Satellites did "Keep Your Hands To Yourself".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

But only I suspected that they did "Hippy Hippy Shake". And they did! I just checked. You can contact me to get my mailing address to send the medal.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Dammit, you guys just wrecked my "godlike knowledge" reputation. Cain't ennyone jus' leave well'nuff alone?

Plus, neither one of you can hit the yodel/falsetto notes on the "Keep Your Hands" chorus like I can. "No hug-GEE no kiss-EE till I get a weddin' rahng" actually is the ruler of this thread. And all threads forever.

Matt C., Monday, 25 November 2002 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark Pitchfork
Melissa W
Julio Desouza
Mark S
O. Nate
Marcello Carlin

Yes, this is a list of people whose music I would steal if given the chance.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 25 November 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

uh that should be "weddin' vow" obviously

Matt C., Monday, 25 November 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

''Thanks, Julio.''

honor the fire alex!

er...thanks dominique you big gurl.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

please stop embarrassing yourselves; the "Hippy Hippy Shake" was indeed covered (perhaps unadvisedly) by the Georgia Satellites for the Tequila soundtrack. and i claim my... wait

jingle-angle-angul (tracerhand), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

"No hug-GEE no kiss-EE till I get a weddin' rahng" actually is the ruler of this thread. And all threads forever.

THAT'S what they are saying? What the fuck?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's the worst thing I've ever done on ILM:

"I got a little change in my pocket going jingle lingle ling
want to call you on the telephone baby I give you a ring
but each time we talk I get the same old thing
always no huggin no kissin until I get a wedding ring
my honey my baby don't put my love upon no shelf
she said don't give no lines and keep your hands to yourself

Cruel baby baby baby why you want to treat me this way
you know I'm still your lover boy I still feel the same way
that's when she told me a story 'bout free milk and a cow
and she said no huggin no kissin until I get a wedding vow
my honey my baby don't put my love upon no shelf
she said don't hand me no lines and keep your hands to yourself

you see I wanted her real bad and I was about to give in
that's when she started talkin' true love started talkin' about sin
I said honey I'll live with you for the rest of my life
she said no huggin no kissin until you make me your wife
my honey my baby don't put my love on no shelf
she don't hand me no lines and keep your hands to yourself."

Matt C., Monday, 25 November 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

OWOWOWOW MY EYES

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry. I should have done a disclaimer or something. As always, send the bill to my people.

Matt C., Monday, 25 November 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow. Tracer really is the coolest person alive, I can't believe he can actually stand to listen to that. Good god, the B52s are one thing but this is a step beyond even that.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 25 November 2002 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking sides: Georgia Satellites' "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" vs. Black Crowes' "Hard to Handle".

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 25 November 2002 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I dont know if I like Britney any more.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 November 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom: SHOCKER.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 25 November 2002 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I like her older stuff fine!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 25 November 2002 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

haha that's because she's rock now!!

mark s (mark s), Monday, 25 November 2002 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt C. has FANTASTIC taste, by the way.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 25 November 2002 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Curt & martin skidmore have pretty similar taste in old rock n roll and r&b to me. duane posted a tape listing on the "who's fucking ten' thread that coulda been mine, dave q shares a canuck's ear with me, and arthur, sean, ronan, anthony, gareth, geeta, cybele among others all write stuff that makes me want to hunt things down.

gotta go, the video for "switch into glide" by the kings is on!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 25 November 2002 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking sides: Georgia Satellites' "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" vs. Black Crowes' "Hard to Handle".

Hm, evisceration versus decapitation, let me think...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

gotta go, the video for "switch into glide" by the kings is on!
Man, I gotta get that album!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned manages to make derrogatory comments about damn near all of my favourite performers on a regular basis, plus he loves my all-time most hated band, Depeche Mode. But he's like one of the three people in the world who still admits to liking The Divine Comedy, so that redeems him.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

And yeah, the DC are ace. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 02:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I TOLD YOU ALL ABOUT TOM. HE'S A CHANGELING!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 29 December 2002 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

No, but you've got spunk.

original bgm, Sunday, 29 December 2002 08:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate spunk.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 December 2002 08:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Just kidding. Anyway, shouldn't we have a thread for the top-whatevers-of-the-year of ILxers? Is there one already?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 December 2002 08:39 (twenty-three years ago)

(Do I get a medal for not running into predictably wrong territory with the sentences "You've got spunk./I hate spunk."?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 29 December 2002 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

(Do I get a medal for not running into predictably wrong territory with the sentences "You've got spunk./I hate spunk."?)

Yes. That kind of willpower takes lots and lots of spunk.

original bgm, Sunday, 29 December 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I gots spunk comin' out of my... oh, never mind.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 29 December 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

it's not your spunk that matters, but your taste. umm.

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 29 December 2002 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

yes. your taste in spunk. or somefink.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 December 2002 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike there's an ILX poll!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 30 December 2002 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

What, like, behind me?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 30 December 2002 01:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, I know, but I've got a top 50 singles list that I'm not entirely sure what to do with and I'd like to give a nice home.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 30 December 2002 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i like someone mostly only passionate about one thing or a small group rather than someone with all ten of their toes dipped in ten different tepid pools. maybe it is why i am so close minded. i like the first stone roses album so apparently i have the worst taste.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 30 December 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

keith: You've inspired me to start a new thread!

original bgm, Monday, 30 December 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

One regular contributor to FT would be maybe the 3rd last person on here I'd ask for a recommendation but that doesn't mean I dislike their writing or them.

Tom - is that me? And, do you dislike me, or my writing?

dwh (dwh), Sunday, 5 January 2003 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha Tom who is it? I know I've given you some real clunkers! (well by clunkers I mean songs you hated)

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 5 January 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually I thought Tom meant me. I would, though. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 January 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It couldn't be me.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 5 January 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

He's a Carter USM fan for crying out loud, he should just say who it is! If it were me I wouldn't be offended, but since I'm in no way an FT contributor I don't have to worry about that.

Nicole (Nicole), Sunday, 5 January 2003 23:23 (twenty-three years ago)

its ronan i am sure! or maybe sundar (only say this becuase i think the tastes have little common ground with tom)

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 5 January 2003 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

we are waiting...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 6 January 2003 08:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not saying! I do like them though and I like their writing too so it doesn't matter. (Also they're higher in the 'rankings' now heh). dwh I've never even met you so how am I supposed to dislike you?? Oh BTW I think I am still sitting on a C90Go! of yours - is it still OK to run it?

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I am about to submit a C-90 too!! Is this OK, Tom?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 6 January 2003 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

It's very OK - planning a big revival for that feature.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Err, re:C90 - I'd rather you didn't publish that without me giving it a total rework, thanks.

dwh (dwh), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I won't publish it then - the point of C90go is that it captures a specific listening moment (74/90/120/whatever minutes long); editing for spelling and readability is encouraged, otherwise no reworking. By all means do a new one though, and I'm sorry for not putting it up.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst = Anyone who posted in this thread

Curtis Stephens, Monday, 6 January 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

how could you hate dance music curtis? you're terrible y'are!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

worst=curtis stephens

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 6 January 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, let me read it again Tom (I've got it here) and I'll see how I feel. If not, I'll do another, with a better tracklisting as well.

dwh (dwh), Monday, 6 January 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I like dance music, but I seldom like dance music with vocals.

Curtis Stephens, Monday, 6 January 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
In the aftermath of me being told that I have the most wrongheaded taste on here, why not bump?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 15 February 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

is miccio worse?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 15 February 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, out of my top20 albums of the year, 3 I got bcuz Patrin liked 'em, 2 coz Tom liked 'em, 1 bcuz of trife, 1 because of Blount, 2 bcuz of Dom. So all of these ppl have great taste. Oh, and Swygart also comes closest to me as far as tastes in chartpop/indiepop go, but he's actually even *less* discriminating than I am, so he can't be trusted.

Worst tastes I've encountered on ILM: Omar, Aquaman, and all you annoying tossers who keep going on about godamn Post Punk (yeah, I know, many of the ppl on my "best taste" list like that stuff too, but they're not as vocal about it.)

xpost no he isn't coz he likes The Clash.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(Ned still gets a free pass for liking the shittiest band that I've ever loved, and continue loving, as described upthread)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ned gets a free pass from too for liking the shittiest band that i have ever hated cuz he listens to so much other groovy stuff and cuz chameleons fans have to stick together. (rhymes with dashing bumpkins)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 15 February 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, it shouldn't RHYME with that band, that would have been a fantastic name for them instead!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, out of my top20 albums of the year, 3 I got bcuz Patrin liked 'em

oh damn! which ones?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Majesticons, The Yeah yeah Yeahs and Killer Mike.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 15 February 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The people who I most seem to identify with musically here are Edward O, Tom and The Lex.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 15 February 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed O does seem to definitely be on point with a lot of his picks, he's like a slightly de-testosteroned version of me in his tastes.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 15 February 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never yet downloaded a Mind Taker recommendation and been disappointed.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 15 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I don't think I've ever encountered anyone here who I think has horrible taste. Actually, maybe taste isn't the right word. I don't see people lauding things that don't fit with the values they hold. There are some critics out there who often feel WRONG, like they calling something orange when its plainly green. I don't get that feeling very often here. There are people who I definitely don't agree with, but they don't seem tasteless WITHIN their value system.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 15 February 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

In addition to Nick H, The Lex, Alex in Doncaster (all of whom have basically the exact same taste as me), Swygart, Dom, Tom and Mind Taker (who hears things nobody else has, genius), the poppier recommendations from Matthew Perpetua, Ned, Anthony Miccio, Tim Finney and Thomas Inskeep tend to be usually correct.

Me, the de-testeroned Dom Passantino. The long search for an epitaph is over!

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 15 February 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Calum has the worst taste.

Sym (shmuel), Sunday, 15 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The only person I really trust tastewise (as far as if he likes it I probably will) is Chuck Eddy. While I don't always like the stuff AS much (he gives Loverboy a 10, I'd give it a 7) I rarely don't get the value in it at all. In fact, he was right enough about the Drive-By Truckers (which at first I just did NOT get) that his approval of Dizzee makes me worry that I'm going to eat some of my recent words about him (not that that should be a big deal anyhow).

and lemme apologize to Julio for being a bit more of a toolbar than necessary back in Nov '02. Actually London Calling and Double Nickels On The Dime are pretty equal in value to me (though the title track and "Lost In The Supermarket" beat anything by the Minutemen ever). The Clash (US Version) still reigns supreme though.

Calum would have pretty good taste if he liked his favourite pop stars for their music.

I'm amazed Geir hasn't been mentioned for worst taste, although he brings so much else to the table.

I suppose I have people who I listen to for different genres; Edward, The Lex and Mind Taker for pop, Stevem, Barima and Ronan for dance, Strongo and Tim Finney for hip hop and garage. Tom is the one who traverses these the best overall for me.

Good Taste: gaz, Nate Patrin, Nordikskillz, Douglas Wolk.
Bad Taste: Geir Hongro. (Only a creature without a soul could literally hate James Browns music with that much intensity.)

Y'know, the P&J threads were a real eye-opener for me, because for a while I had started to second-guess my taste/judgment/whatever for not liking certain things that had been lauded by certain well-respected folks around here.
And then I saw Chuck Eddy praise Amy Grant somewhere and Zwan was on Ned's P&J list, and I was like "half the people here are wrong and everyone else is a nerd."
Myself included.

Note these are not value judgments (though it's hard to imagine how else to take "wrong" but use your imaginations).
