There was an interview with Mick Collins in The Age a couple of weeks back, and he explained that the 'bubblegum' album went on the backburner because he thought this would be a pretty good opportunity at having a big-selling record, and an album of bubblegum covers would probably confuse the audience. It's now going to be the next one.

Anyone seen them live? How are they?

I saw them in Bath around the time of Dangerous Magical Noise and they were brilliant, it was one of the best gigs I've been to. Haven't heard anything from them in a long time, that comp was ages ago, have they got anything new coming out?

Yeah, absolutely fucking fantastic live band. Seen 'em about 5 times, and they've never let me down. Sometimes a little disjointed/uptight towards the beginning of the set, but they always loosen up as they go (or maybe that's just me).

Studio records are always a little disappointing, even Electraglide. They miss the rawness that makes the live show such a blast. Dangerous Magical Noise was especially disappointing. Mostly a singles band - check the If You Don't Already Have a Look comp. Also S: Live North of 8-Mile. Versions on that are uniformly better than on the studio LPs.

Wanted to go see 'em in Hoboken a few years ago, but my gf found a kitten in a dumpster on the way, so we had to bail and take it back home. Which was a big mistake, but that's neither here nor there.

Anyway, the new LP is apparently out! Haven't seen or heard it yet, but I'll try and track a copy down for the weekend. From the Midhaven mail-order page: ...the opening track has been acknowledged by Collins as his tribute to Mark E. I think it comes out later this month actually. I was hoping to order it from In the Red because it would probably be cheaper than Midheaven, but they apparently haven't updated their site in a little while. Anyone ordered Media Mail from Midheaven? It says it could take up to 6 weeks, but I can't imagine it taking that long.

Don't get the wrong idea though - it's not "electronic" in the normal sense of the word. It's just a little closer to indie-pop than I would want - I'm more of a fan of the dirtier and more soulful side of In the Red - I love early Black Lips, Gories, Country Teasers, etc. etc.

There are moments that are closer to someone, like, say, TV on the Radio than what you are used to expect from the Dirtbombs. That may be a positive thing for some. For me, definitely not.

i've been waiting like 15 years for someone to do an album like this and while i never imagined it would be a band like the dirtbombs it seems perfect the more i think about it. lcd soundsystem was the first rock band i can think of that tried to capture the feel of "proper" house and techno and while they succeeded in a lot of ways, to me they felt a little bit like they'd fallen between two stools. like mr miyagi says, stay in middle of road, you get squashed like grape. i like the idea that these tracks could be covered as full-on rock songs instead of merely approximated using rock instruments.

have heard a few of the tracks now and they are all amazing. psyched for the release.

This album is good. Maybe a bit minimal and rough-cut for my tastes. Sharevari is particularly good!

I just read a review of this that didn't realize it was a covers album, and am now feeling intense sympathy for the author, because it has always been my great, great fear that I'll wind up doing something similar.

I think this a great idea for exposing people who wouldn't normally listen to techno to hear some great stuff.
But it seems a little unlikely that any of the versions will be better than the originals. Still, doesn't mean that this won't be really cool in its own way.

a decade back, mick & the dirtbombs did a punk-garage covers albums dedicated to the funk/soul/r&b & black rock music they (he) grew up with. his older sister's record collection, as he put it. a lot of people liked it, and no one intimated that they might be treading on sacred ground, iirc. this is a continuation of that project, a band from detroit paying tribute to the house/techno/electro tracks that shaped them.

Ha, I don't want to openly shame the person/publication. It's just funny that I came across the review while, umm, doing research to make sure I had relevant info to maybe write about this. (Every time critics on ILM say they never read about records they're reviewing, I'm like wow, y'all are smart and confident and know way more about music than I do.)

xpost - You might be setting a high bar for "cursory interest" there -- surely there are lots of people who like plenty of dance music without being instantly familiar with Detroit classics? (Leave out obvious lyric reminders, and there are probably only three songs on here that I'd have been able to name if you quizzed me.)

Anyway, this album's really lovable, though I think it could do without a 20-minute "Bug in the Bass Bin" freakout in the middle. Parts of it remind me of how the B-52s were supposedly popular when this stuff was getting started -- like on the little DJ Assault cover in particular, I get some weird, long mental connection being drawn between stuff that came after techno and B-52s type guitar-and-drums dance music.

slant review is similar. not a single word spared for what they're actually doing on the album. strong suggestion that the reviewer thinks these are original songs. weird.

But the PopMatters piece links to the famous "The Scene" YouTube of Sharevari, at least acknowledging that that one is I cover.

The strangest track here is "Good Life," a catchy but incessantly vapid dance number that seems slipped in from an entirely different album

Ha. That person is doing many of Slant's reviews. While I understand Nabisco's point, in this situation the reviewers might have considered doing research since this is a band known for doing covers. The album has not been presented in a complete vacuum.

this, to me, is the weirdest line from the popmatters review. their last proper album was less than two years ago, and they've kept up a relentless singles release & touring schedule in the interim. the new album isn't ghosted by a long absence.

I still need to hear this, but agree with Nabisco that this is why I tend to read EVERY REVIEW OF AN ALBUM before writing my own. Paranoia strikes deep.

I love Sharevari. But too many tracks on here suffer from essentially being the same thing being played over and over again. Fine if it's hypnotic minimal techno, but in a garage rock context, it can sound like a particularly uninventive jam in, well, in a garage. I love the concept, but there aren't enough peaks and troughs to hold my attention much of the time. Sharevari is amazing though.

Love Sharevari, Strings of Life and Jaguar on first listen but the whole things pretty solid imo

I am looking forward to hearing Good Life especially, I was into Inner City as a kid when it came out and loved that song, while I didn't hear most of the other tracks until much much later.

I think their version of Jaguar is awesome but needs the swooping strings and I'm not sure how they'd do that without use of an AXE SOLO.

yup, me too. i don't find i really get much from it in that 20 minutes. does the original have the same run time? i've never heard it.

aside from that song, the album is a sweaty, dirty, fun record and i love it.

The Dirtbombs, the venerable Detroit garage outfit formed by Mick Collins, will be the next entry in Scion A/V's ongoing remix series. While the project intitally seems at odds with The Dirtbombs' oft-traditional blend of garage, punk, and soul, the new album marks a stylistic departure for the band, paying homage to the diversity of their hometown with a collection of classic Detroit Techno covers. Scion A/V, long proponents of both the garage rock and Detroit techno scenes, are commemorating the effort by releasing an EP of techno remixes of The Dirtbombs' covers, along with a booklet of stories by Collins about his youth in Detroit, his first exposure to Detroit techno at parties in 1982, and, most surprisingly, his forays into making dance records before forming the massively influential garage band The Gories, which his name would soon become synonymous with.

Opening with the classic 1981 A Number of Names single "Sharevari", recontextualized through both the Dirtbombs' and ubiquitous Detroit house DJ Omar S's filters. Then, handclaps and heavily delayed guitar lines signal the intro to techno collective Ectomorph's remix of the band's take on Knights of the Jaguar's classic 1999 single "Jaguar". The third and final remix, of Innerzone Orchestra's "Bug in the Bassbin", is a gritty facelift by Kyle Hall, the 19-year-old prodigy already being praised by the likes of XLR8R and many others as the new face of Detroit techno. Closing out the collection is the original Dirtbombs version of "Sharevari".

yeah, finding those scion freebie records is just dumb luck. hopefully you know the stores that tend to get them, or have a friend who knows someone or whatever. have had pretty good luck so far.

yeah, that's the solution. i mean, i don't hate "bugs", but it's not something i want to listen to every time, either. other than that and the remix that closes the album, it's damn near flawless. can see how "jaguar" might frustrate if you're expecting the strings, but taken on its own terms i think it works just fine.

in my mind, it's seven song mini-album running a little over 32 minutes (with a couple inessential bonus tracks or b-sides thrown in).

I think I DRASTICALLY underrated this when I first listened to it. I thought it was nice enough but right now it's basically the perfect thing to hear.

"Strings of Life" is kind of amazing in that it doesn't sound anything like the original yet manages to capture the same type of euphoric haze.

For about a decade now Mick Collins, front man for the Detroit based Dirtbombs, has been threatening that the “next” record the band would release would be their “bubblegum” album. After a couple of albums of mostly originals, a compilation of singles and an album of Detroit techno covers it would be understandable for someone to think that the bubblegum record either fell to the wayside or was a farce to begin with. Well, at long last here is The Dirtbombs’ bubblegum record – Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey.

It would be understandable to assume that a bubblegum record by the Dirtbombs would be an album of cover versions by bands like the 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Ohio Express and The Archies. After all, the band already has two albums of cover songs under their belt which salute specific genres. That is not the case in this instance. Mick Collins has written ten new original tracks in which he pays homage to the sound and style originally popularized in the late 60’s/early 70’s by producers/exploiters like Kasenetz-Katz and Don Kirschner amongst many others. The results are pretty much spot on to Mick’s intention. While the usual Dirtbombs’ double drums, fuzzy guitars and soulful swagger are definitely present, this album is sugary, sun-shiny pop rock that recalls the albums made by Josie & the Pussycats, the Banana Splits and Lancelot Link & the Evolution Revolution, to name but three. It’s all singalong choruses, childlike themes and a contrived innocence – it’s not the kind of record one would’ve predicted from a guy who once fronted The Gories.

The original bubblegum music was basically a cash-in produced in an assemblyline process usually using studio musicians and hired song-writers who dashed the stuff out as quickly as possible and most likely forgot about it even quicker. While The Dirtbombs adhere to some of this original approach by using a list of guest musicians so long there wasn’t room to credit them on the album cover, this album is actually a carefully crafted work that was almost two years in the making. Also not the sort of thing one would expect from the guy who once fronted The Gories. Still, this is incredibly catchy stuff.

This record really surprised me. You hear that someone's doing a bubblegum album and you think OK, hopefully that will be fun, but there's just so much depth here.

this turned out to be pretty fun, but not as great as I was hoping. they overreach in places - particularly with the more complex harmonies/vocals, they just don't have the vocal chops to pull off the sweeter vocal arrangements required by the material.

The album reminded me how strongly I used to feel about Collins being one of the best songwriters of his generation during the Gories days. (Not that he hasn't also demonstrated that previously with the Dirtbombs, but I haven't always been following them.)

I was at a garage punk festival in 1999 and there was this awesome band I hadn't hear of before but I though one guy looked familiar and I though it was the guy from the Gories, and I went up at the end as he was packing his gear to tell him how great it was, and it was actually Kid Congo. (The band was the Knoxville Girls) (facepalm emoji)
