The Rough Guide to . . .
"This is the thread where we pretend we work for the World Music Network label and have been asked to compile a single-disc [repeat: single-disc] overview of a single genre for their Rough Guide series. "Genre" can mean whatever you want it to. Traditionally the Rough Guide discs have been over 60 minutes and/or at least 15 tracks long, though not always both. (The recent Rough Guide to Ska, for example, is 20 tracks totaling 48 minutes.)"
So . . . let's continue!

Just because we're dancingDoesn't mean that we're romancing tooBoy I hardly know you - so I have to show you
That it's not as easy as it seems to beTo get all what you want from meIt takes more than one nightWait till the time is rightAnd right now I wanna - pump it - pump it - pump it
Hurt me, hurt meI know you wanna take me homeBut Baby, that's not what I wantHurt me, hurt meYou can work my body all night longBut the pants stay on!
My reputation says, I'm not one for hesitationBut when it comes to - sex - I'm very, very patient
Boy it's not as easy as it seems to beTo get into my pants without getting into meNow you know - this girl ain't no hoeThe pants stay on till I say so
Hurt me, hurt meI know you wanna take me homeBut Baby, that's not what I wantHurt me, hurt meYou can work my body all night alongBut the pants stay on!
All I need is time to get to know you betterDancing's all that's on my mind - tonight

Do you know anything about Malcolm McClaren's new Chinese girl band? I think they're called Wild Strawberries. I've heard their version of Kung-Fu Fighting - or, at least, it sampled it heavily - and it raised my dander. They sounded worth investigating at any rate, even if they did sound a bit like Shonen Knife.

a crying shame Ofra Haza didn't make the top ten eh? I've also just remembered Wes 'Alane' (#11), Mory Kante (#25) and Deep Forest(#10) - perhaps Sash! (hits in French, Spanish and Italin tho that's clutching with straws really as they're pretty much just the title of the song yelled in another language) or DJ Quicksilver (Bellisimo!)could've featured, as could Old Pav with 'Nessun Dorma'

honorable mentions to Luigi Russolo (he should probably be track #1, but I don't know any of his recordings myself -- open to suggestions), Nono, Maderna, AMM, MEV, Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Bayle, etc.
Drew's list is a little sexier, though it's more personal 'smash hits' than an attempt at anything comprehensive. Maybe I'll take this list over to a concrete thread for arguing/enhancement.

1. Walter Ruttman - Weekend (excerpt)2. Pierre Schaeffer - Etude aux Chemins de Fer3. Schaeffer / Henry - Symphonie Pour un Homme Seul (excerpt)4. Vladimir Ussachevsky - Sonic Contours5. Hugh Le Caine - Dripsody6. John Cage - Williams Mix7. Edgar Varèse - Poeme Electronique8. Iannis Xenakis - Concret PH9. Karlheinz Stockhausen - Gesang der Jünglinge (excerpt)10. György Ligeti - Artikulation11. Tod Dockstader - Electronic Piece No. 8 (excerpt)12. James Tenney - Collage No. 113. Pierre Henry - Variations pour Une Porte et un Soupir (excerpt)14. Luciano Berio - Visage (excerpt)15. Bernard Parmigiani - Pulsion-Miroir (1st movement of Violostries)16. Beatles - Revolution No. 917. Glenn Gould - The Idea of North (opening)18. Luc Ferrari - Presque Rien No. 1 (conclusion)19. Negativland - A Big 10-8 Place Part One (excerpt)
(I'd argue 'Gesang der Jünglinge' over 'Hymnen' because it's one of the first pieces that fuses concrète with electronic. Stockhausen claims it isn't 'concrète' but he's just talkin' loud, but if we want to be respectful, substitute it with '1st Centre DEUTSCHLAND-Lied' from Hymnen Region II.)

I've only over-ridden a CD burner once: Prince - Sign of the Times onto 1 CD - something like 80.05 long.
I presume the Mission of Burma CD is just a carefully done over-ride by professionals.

Thanks for the suggestions db (what do you think of the rough guide to motorik? i value your opinion in this matter! [recalling some comments you made on a krautrock thread]), I was already thinking about using an alternate take of "H&V" (which is 40 secs shorter) but I'll happily replace it with "All I Wanna Do" if that fits better (I don't know that song, will check it out though).

EIDE was an electronic night I hosted at the East End Cafe in Newark, Delaware. A lot of underground performers from Baltimore, Philly, Harrisburg and New York came out to play, showcasing a range of styles from IDM to breakcore, soundclash, straight techno, ambient, and some things that simply don't fit into categories. I offer the following list for anyone interested in discovering talented unknown artists.

If by "Can't Stop" you mean "Tick, Tick, Bang" then both it and "Joy in Repetition" were in the short list - I just wanted to represent other periods.
I'm mucking around with a Disco boxset for a friend, so I might be able to do Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards best productions Rough Guide if that's an adequate replacement for the Chic Rough Guide.

If you can edit out No Matches No Fire from the end of Dope Fiends and Boozehounds, switch Claire over to the Double Live version. Sadly, no Self Serve Gas Station but the whole thing clocks just seconds under 74 minutes and most importantly it does NOT have Bad Time To Be Poor.

Have to admit, I wouldn't think of putting "Can't Stop This Feeling I've Got" unless the intro was hacked off (same with My Name is Prince but with the ending in that case - the minus Tony M edit).
Now I just have to do Rough Guide to Prince Funk, the Rough Guide to Prince Outtakes, and I will offically be pathetic. Matos, I beg of you, do Rough Guide to Prince Ballads, and/or Rough Guide to Prince Releases/Outtakes/Productions of other peoples work from 1986-87.

This is impossible. Really skewed towards equal representation of his records (as well as I could! But nothing from Arise, Therefore and I love that record, so...) and it also came out as rather "polite" for Oldham. Someone else can get to the side of his work that includes "Riding", "No More Workhorse Blues" and "A Sucker's Evening".

Thanks! Yes, it is very hard to really "represent" Oldham's work without discluding a lot of really vital songs, and hard not to include all the vital songs without presenting a really wild comp as so much of what he does is thematically and lyrically so diverse (I'm sure that could be argued, but it's how I feel). I skewed to the "nicer" or what have you Oldham as that is the stuff that I think is probably easiest for most people to like, and what I tend to show people when I'm introducing them to his work. But to not have "The Way" on there breaks my heart. I'd love to sit down and work on some various thematic Oldham comps. I.e., Sin, Love, Regret, it's all there. You could probably drop a 15 song Oldham collection about adultery for Christ's sake.
